Anatomy of a Revolutionary Movement: "Students for a Democratic Society"; Speakers' Honoraria at Colleges and Universities; Juvenile Justice and Corrections; Amphetamines; Heroin and Heroin Paraphernalia

Washington: Government Printing Office. (1970-1971). First. First edition. Multiple Special House Reports (91st Congress, 2d Session) bound in one volume. Thick octavo. Complete as issued in the original publisher's cloth. Some toning, near fine. Contains two important investigative reports by the Committee on Internal Security (i.e., the renamed House Un-American Activities Committee): Anatomy of a Revolutionary Movement: "Students for a Democratic Society" (No. 1565: vii, 175, xiii pp., with photographs); and Report of Inquiry Concerning Speakers' Honoraria at Colleges and Universities (No. 1732: xii, 52pp.). Both were conducted under the direction of Richard H. Ichord, the Committee's Chairman, a fervent anti-Communist who crusaded against the Peace Movement during the Vietnam War. The report on Students for a Democratic Society and associated New Left groups, includes an illustration of FBI Wanted Poster for William Charles "Bill" Ayers that was used by House Republicans to discredit President Barack Obama. The report on Speakers' Honoraria, undertaken to investigate the possibility that New Left radical groups and organizations were financing their activities through speaking engagements, includes the Dissenting View of African-American Congressman Louis Stokes of Ohio. Also included in this volume are three timely reports by the Select Committee on Crime on drug use and related criminal activities among urban and counterculture youth: Juvenile Justice and Corrections (No. 1806: v, 85pp.); Amphetamines (No. 1807: v, 44pp.); and Heroin and Heroin Paraphernalia: Second Report by the Select Committee on Crime (No. 1808: v, 83pp.). A nice copy, scarce in the trade. .

Johnny Got His Gun (Original screenplay, inscribed in 1970 by Dalton Trumbo to set decorator George R. Nelson)

Los Angeles: World Entertainment / Robert Rich Productions, 1970. Final Draft Script for the 1971 film, "Johnny Got His Gun," directed and written for the screen by Dalton Trumbo based on his 1939 novel, and starring Timothy Bottoms, Donald Sutherland, and Donald Barry. This is set decorator George R. Nelson's working copy, inscribed to Nelson by Trumbo on the title page during the production of the film: "For Bob Nelson / who made this script have the appearance of life / Gratefully / Dalton Trumbo / Chatsworth / July 24, 1970." Nelson's notes are in holograph blue ink throughout, noting various props needed for various scenes (e.g., "Artillery", "war poster", "machine gun," etc.) Trumbo's classic meditation on the horror of war was first published in 1939 by J.B. Lippincott, winning the National Book Award (then called the American Book Sellers Award), and was subsequently serialized in the leftist newspaper The Daily Worker in 1940. Trumbo's left-leaning views, and ultimately his direct association with the Communist Party in the early 1940s caused him to be called before the House Un-American Activities committee, where, along with 9 other writers and directors, he refused to testify about Communist activity in Hollywood. The group, dubbed The Hollywood Ten, was subsequently blacklisted, and Trumbo spent 11 months in prison. Thirty years after the book's publication, Trumbo himself directed the film adaptation of his novel, which won the Grand Prize of the Jury at Cannes. White production company wrappers; title page present, stated FINAL DRAFT, with a date of June 5, 1970. 134 leaves, mechanically reproduced, rectos only. Pages and wrapper Very Good, well used but completely intact, bound with two tarnished gold brads.

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (Original screenplay for the 1970 film)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1970. Final Script for the 1970 film, produced and directed by Russ Meyer and written for the screen by Roger Ebert, prior to his better-known work as a film critic. After nearly a decade as one of America's most successful independent filmmakers, sexploitation auteur Meyer first reached out for the brass ring of major studio success with this frantic and most entertaining cult favorite, once described by Meyer and screenwriter Roger Ebert as "the first exploitation-horror-camp-musical." Three members of an all-girl rock band called The Kelly Affair pull up stakes for Hollywood in search of stardom. After reaching the promised land, Susan arranges for Kelly and her bandmates to attend a wild party thrown by Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell (John La Zar), a flamboyant and very successful record producer. Z-Man renames the band The Carrie Nations, signs them to a record deal, and they're one of the biggest acts in America practically overnight. The nonstop train of decadence, drugs, and betrayal finally comes off the rails during a drug-fueled orgy at Z-Man's mansion, which erupts into violence when the rock mogul's darkest secret is revealed. Featuring one-hit wonders the Strawberry Alarm Clock, supporting performances by Meyer regulars Charles Napier and Haji, and a bit part from future blaxploitation icon Pam Grier, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" proved to be Meyer's biggest box-office success [The AllMovie Guide]. Orange studio wrappers, stamped "First Draft" on the front wrapper (but crossed through, with the holograph ink notation "Shooting Script" written just above it), and dated September 17, 1969. Stamped as copy number 5073, with the holograph marker notation ".5" just after that. Title page present, with a date of September 17, 1969, and screenwriter credits for Roger Ebert, followed by story and treatment credits for Ebert and Russ Meyer. 183 pages, all but three of which are blue revised pages dated variously between 9/19/1969 and 2/19/1970 (the few unrevised pages being eye-rest green). Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus (bright, with yapped edges), bound with three gold brads. The massive final shooting script from one of the seminal drug exploitation films of the post-Summer of Love era.

Cabaret (Original screenplay for the 1972 film, screenwriter's annotated working copy)

Los Angeles: Allied Artists, 1970. Revised First Draft script for the 1972 film. Composite working script belonging to screenwriter Hugh Wheeler, profusely annotated in holograph pencil and ink by him on virtually every page. Included here are three unpublished, candid photographs of Minnelli, Wheeler, and other members of the "Cabaret" crew while on the Rome shoot of the film. From the library of Hugh Wheeler. Screenwriter Jay Presson Allen worked on multiple drafts of the screenplay, none of which pleased director Fosse. After months of rewrites, Presson finally turned the script over to her colleague and friend Wheeler, with whom she had collaborated two years before on the screenplay of Graham Greene's "Travels with My Aunt" (for which they were both nominated for a WGA Award). Under WGA rules, Presson alone was credited as screenwriter in the film's credits, and was nominated for an Academy Award (losing to "The Godfather"). Wheeler is listed in the extended credits as a research consultant. Wheeler is best known as the winner of multiple of Tony Awards for Stephen Sondheim musicals "Sweeney Todd" and "A Little Night Music," and not as well known as the author of dozens of murder mysteries under the nom de plume Patrick Quentin. A milestone of the New Hollywood Cinema. Winner of eight Academy Awards, including Best Director, Best Cinematography; nominated for two others, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. No wrapper as issued. Title page present, noted as "(First Draft) - REVISED," with a credit for screenwriter Allen. 129 leaves, composite of typescript, mimeograph, photographic and mechanically reproduced leaves, with tan and blue revision pages throughout, with various dates in holograph ink, all from October and November 1970. Near Fine, in Wheeler's original spring binder.

        Andy Warhol (Stockholm Catalogue)

Stockholm: Moderna Museet, 1970. Fine copy in the distinctive silkscreened flower wrapper; rare in this pristine condition.. Third printing. Quarto. Warhol's famous 'Stockholm Catalogue', published on the occasion of his first European museum show at the Moderna Museet, Stockholm, February - March, 1968. The concept for the catalogue was developed by Kasper König, who commissioned Factory stalwart Billy Name, and a teenage Stephen Store, to photograph how Warhol and his coconspirators lived and worked. But it was König's use of the xerox machine to reproduce Warhol's own work that gives this catalogue its signature feel. By some estimates over 200,000 copies were printed in three editions. (Parr / Badger, v2, 144-145; Open Book 238-239).

        The Bluest Eye.

New York: Holt Rinehart & Winston, 1970. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Toni Morrison on the title page. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket that shows a single tear. Set in Lorain, Ohio, in 1941, The Bluest Eye is something of an ensemble piece. The point of view is passed like a baton from one character to the next, with Morrison's own voice functioning as a kind of gold standard throughout. The focus, though, is on an 11-year-old black girl named Pecola Breedlove, whose entire family has been given a cosmetic cross to bear: You looked at them and wondered why they were so ugly; you looked closely and could not find the source. Then you realized that it came from conviction, their conviction. It was as though some mysterious all-knowing master had given each one a cloak of ugliness to wear, and they had each accepted it without question.... And they took the ugliness in their hands, threw it as a mantle over them, and went about the world with it. There are far uglier things in the world than, well, ugliness, and poor Pecola is subjected to most of them. She's spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. No wonder she yearns to be the very opposite of what she is--yearns, in other words, to be a white child, possessed of the blondest hair and the bluest eye.

The Devils (Original screenplay for the 1971 film)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1970. Revised Final draft script for the 1971 film. Studio File Copy, rubber-stamped on the front wrapper. Based on Aldous Huxley's 1952 novel, "The Devils of Loudon," and John Whiting's 1965 play. A power-hungry Cardinal in seventeenth-century France seeks control over the city of Loudun, but first needs to destroy Father Grandier (Reed), the priest protecting the city. The Cardinal and his entourage then frame the priest as a warlock in control of a satanic nunnery, including the sexually repressed Sister Jeanne (Redgrave).         Gimme Shelter (Original maquette, proof, and final print of a variant poster for the 1970 film)

New York: Maysles Films, 1970. Archive including the paste-up maquette, proof, and final print of a photo-montage variant poster for the 1970 film, made for its premiere in New York City, and posted strictly on walls around the city. A poster design that, unlike the final one used, conveys the chaos, bleakness, and ultimately depressive air of the documentary, and one that arguably influenced Robert Frank's montage design for the cover of the band's next record, the seminal "Exile on Main Street." A legendary documentary, chronicling the final weeks of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour behind "Let It Bleed," culminating in the disastrous free concert at Altamont Speedway. A film associated with the Direct Cinema movement of the 1950s and 1960s, of which the Maysles were an important part, but just as much the beginning of a new style of "reactionary" documentary filmmaking, wherein the events being documented lead the film rather than the film being led by a preconceived idea. Maquette: 18 x 25.5 (46 x 65 cm), executed on art board with tape, with its original tissue overlay, with some browning to the tape, but not the maquette itself, Very Good to Near Fine overall. Proof: 9 x 15.5 inches (23 x 40 cm), glossy stock, rolled, with a few tiny stains at the top margin, easily Near Fine. Poster: 29.75 x 44.5 (75.5 x 114 cm), rolled, on archival linen, Fine.         Raging Bull. My Story.

Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, Inc., , 1970. With Joseph Carter and Peter Savage. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to spine, yellow ochre endpapers. In the dust jacket. 16 plates. A little bumped head and tail of the spine, pastedowns typically mottled red, but very good in slightly rubbed jacket, chafed at the folds, and with a few minor edge-splits and chips. First edition, later impression, letter code "T". This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "My Pal Russ, Keep punching. Jake La Motta". Colourful and controversial autobiography filmed to critical acclaim by Martin Scorsese, deservedly winning Robert de Niro his Best Actor Oscar in 1980. Arguably the most convincing fight film ever made. The film's dramatic and gore-splattered fight scenes did little to enhance La Motta's reputation as a pugilist, he was always thought to "fight with his face" despite his victory over Sugar Ray Robinson, and it certainly didn't present him as a fine human being - famously after the premiere he apologised to his long-since divorced wife Vikki, saying that he couldn't believe he'd been that bad, only to be told that "Honey, you were much worse." - but it did provide him with a post-fight career that most pugs would envy.

        [Two Country Music Photograph Albums]

Poughkeepsie, NY, [ca. 1970]. Near fine. Two albums, each oblong 4to. Measuring approximately 10.25?" x 7?" with 155 color photographs, loosely mounted rectos only in corners. Album 1: Green faux-leather covers, gilt title decoration to front, sting bound, 59 black paper leaves, each with two photographs recto mounted, 118 prints total; well preserved, near fine. Album 2: Ivory faux-leather covers, gilt title decoration to front 20 black paper leaves, 19 with recto mounted photographs, most two to a page, final leaf blank; crease through center of front cover, otherwise clean, contents near fine. A fantastic pair of albums capturing 1970 Poughkeepsie, NY area regional country music acts, venues and patrons. Prints almost entirely uniform in size, measuring approximately 3.5?" square, many date stamped outside the image area. The first album shows spots in and around Poughkeepsie, primarily the Brand X Corral bar on Rt. 94 in Vails Gate, NY. Acts include Gil Rogers (whose albums we suspect these were based on internal evidence), The Country Cousins, and Country Skyline. The second album follows Rogers down to West Virginia for his performance during the 1970 Eastern States Country Music Convention on the famed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling?'s Capitol Theater. Rogers recorded a handful of honky-tonk singles in the early 1970?'s on the Stop label and enjoyed regional success as a performer for decades. These amateur images show the elaborate stage dress, music gear and social settings of Woodstock-era country music. That famed festival was held less than a year earlier and some 35 miles from where most of the images shown here were snapped, though one could be forgiven for guessing they were taken years and miles apart. An album that demonstrates how this blue collar form adhered to traditions and fans throughout the cultural sea changes of the late 1960s and early 70s, and a colorful portrait of a working regional musician.

Persepolis 3: The royal tombs and other monuments. University of Chicago. Oriental institute publications Volume LXX.

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1970. XXIV, 174, 105 S. Tafeln. Mit Faltblättern. Großformat. Mit zahlr. Abb. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Ecken bestossen, Umschlag defekt. - The third and final volume is linked with the preceding volumes mainly by the graphic and descriptive documentation of the tombs of the Achaemenid monarchs at Naqsh-i Rustam and Per-sepolis, by a study of the excavated Achaemenid Tower (\"Kacbah-i Zardusht\") at Naqsh-i Rustam, and by an appended review of tribute-bearers and throne-bearers depicted in the Persepolis reliefs. In Volume III, Naqsh-i Rustam rather than Persepolis is the focal site. In addition to the Achaemenid monu-ments, the volume records reliefs of pre-Achaemenid and Sasanian origin and the newly uncovered important inscriptions which Shapur I and the priest Kartir engraved on the Achaemenid Tower about eight hundred years after its construction. The third site referred to in Volume III is Naqsh-i Rajab, in the Persepolis plain. It is a natural recess at the foot of the Mountain of Mercy, adorned with Sasanian reliefs. Rock reliefs of the same era in other parts of Iran and in eastern Anatolia are also described. Our investigations in the Persepolis area included excavations and tests in two prehistoric mounds (Tall-i Bakun A and B), which had previously been examined by Herz-feld, and in the extensive city mound of Istakhr. Most of the objects uncovered by us at Istakhr represent the early centuries of Islam and are to be published apart from the earlier, mainly Achaemenid, remains presented in the Persepolis volumes. So far, only the coins have been published in final form. Versandkostenfreie Lieferung
