        One Hundred Years of Solitude

Harper & Row, 1970. First American Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine in Archival Plastic Cover. A very handsome First American Edition of Marquez' masterpiece with "First Edition" on the copyright page and no number sequence on the last page. A solid beautiful edition in dark green cloth with silver titling on the spine and gold Harper & Row symbol on the front cover. In fine condition but for minor touches of wear including light bubbling on the spine and a very tiny brown speck on one interior page, very minor. The dustjacket is extremely bright and colorful, and complete with the original price ($7.95) with an exclamation point at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap indicating a first issue dustjacket and with "0270" on the lower front flap. The dustjacket shows touches of wear and mild darkening of the white panels; there is a 1 " closed tear on the top edge and another small one but the protective archival plastic cover makes these almost invisible. . A beautiful copy overall. This book is featured in the Parrish Books Premier Collection as one of our most special books.

EAST 100TH STREET: BRUCE DAVIDSON - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER

(DAVIDSON, BRUCE). Davidson, Bruce. EAST 100TH STREET: BRUCE DAVIDSON - SIGNED BY THE PHOTOGRAPHER. Signed by the Photographer. Cambridge, MA: Harvard University Press, 1970. First Edition. Large Square 4to. Cloth in Acetate Dust Jacket. Photography Monograph. Near Fine/Very Good -. np, 105 duotone illustrations. Designed by Elton Robinson. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "What you call a ghetto, I call my home. This was said to me when I first came to Harlem, and during the two years that I photographed the people of East 100th Street, it stayed with me". Bruce Davidson's first book, "East 100th Street" which surveys the harrowing state of life in Harlem in the late sixties is one of the classic volumes of Post-War American photography. An internally most handsome example of the 1970 Harvard University Press first hardbound printing (cited on page 18 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 260-261 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", page 26 of "From Fair to Fine: 20th Century Photography Books That Matter", and pages 196-97 of "The Book of 101 Books") additionally SIGNED "Bruce Davidson" in black ink on the half title page showing a bit of typical light soiling and age-toning to the extremities of the cloth and textblock in a price clipped publisher's printed acetate jacket that has a three inch closed tear at the top of the spine along with some chipping at the spine ends and upper foredge corner of the front cover. Despite these condition issues, it is one of the sharper copies of this exceedingly fragile title we have ever seen.         INSOMNIA: Or, The Devil at Large

Albuquerque, NM: Loujon Press,. 1970.. First edition, limited issue, this one being number 10 of "99" copies in "Edition F" (there were actually 65 at most, see below) with twelve loose watercolor prints, THREE of which are SIGNED AND DATED 10/15/70 BY MILLER, as called for [Shifreen & Jackson A175f]. The three prints SIGNED BY MILLER are "Insomnia No. 1" (8/3/66); "Insomnia No. 2" (8/22/66); and "2nd Insomnia Series, No. 1" (5/8/67). Large, elaborate production; housed in decorative wooden box measuring approximately 24 x 19 x 1.5" with sliding wood cover (actually wood paneling, smooth side up) illustrated with photograph of Miller and wife "Hoki" beneath which is affixed an antiqued copper plate engraved "Ed. F." Each of the TWELVE COLOR PRINTS is printed on heavy artist's paper and measures approximately 22.5 x 17.5". Also includes a large, heavy card stock title sheet and the book itself -- another elaborate production of plain, comb-bound boards with foil paper dust jacket (made from wall paper?); in facsimile manuscript and illustrated with photographs throughout. "Edition F" was initially planned for 192 copies and later reduced to 99, Shifreen & Jackson estimate that NO MORE THAN 65 COPIES WERE ACTUALLY PRODUCED and that ONLY 300 WOODEN BOXES WERE EVER CONSTRUCTED for the total edition (note to Shifreen & Jackson A175a, p.408). The book and prints are best described by Miller's daughter, Valentine, on her tribute website: "In the mid 60s Dad became infatuated by a cabaret singer from Japan named Hoki Tokuda. He would spend hours at the piano bar in the Imperial Gardens Restaurant in Hollywood, listening to Hoki sing. He eventually wooed and married her. In 1965-6 he got insomnia worrying about the relationship and wrote a small book called Insomnia or the Devil at Large and during those sleepless nights painted a dozen watercolors, the Insomnia series." Light finger smudges to half-title sheet, otherwise book, prints, and box are all fine. .

        Igor Stravinsky, 1970

      - Original 1970 photograph capturing the Russian composer, pianist and conductor in a somewhat defensive pose with hands shielding his musical score open before him. 9.5" x 13". Camera Press/Snowdon credit and other stamps on the verso. Small crease to the upper right corner, tiny nick to the lower left; otherwise a crisp image in fine condition. Lord Snowdon was married to Princess Margaret, sister of Queen Elizabeth II, from 1960 to 1978. He is also a world-renowned photographer and documentarian. At first, his photography focused almost exclusively on design, fashion and theater, but he soon managed to establish himself as a successful portraitist through his photos of British royals, including Queen Elizabeth II and the Duke of Edinburgh in 1957. In the 1960s, Lord Snowdon landed a job as the picture editor of The Sunday Times magazine and by the 1970s, his work had placed him among England's most well-respected photographers.

Preliminary cover design for Penny Candy, by Edward Fenton

1970 - Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 8 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches. Archivally matted and framed. Preliminary artwork for the cover design of Fenton's book, a fantasy story based on the English "Tinker Tailor" rhyme. A copy of the trade paperback edition of the book, which was published by Holt in 1970, is included in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. The key differences between this preliminary drawing and the finished work are most discernible in the five children standing in front of the candy counter: in the preliminary artwork, the children's clothing is colored, their arrangement is different, as is their height in relation to the counter. Gorey also used some ink flourishes to make the titling, which lines up vertically on either side of the central image, appear more like pieces of candy. This was not used in the published version. Gorey's watercolor work for published books seldom appears on the market. Very fine in an attractive black acrylic and resin frame. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        The Boo

McClure Press 1970 - Signed by Pat Conroy on the half-title page. Author's first book, reflecting his experience as a graduate of the Citadel, with a photo of Lt. Colonel Courvoisie, former Assistant Commondant of the Cadets at the Citadel, on the jacket cover and other photos throughout. The white jacket is in unusually clean and fine condition, with the slightest sunning to the spine and barely-detectable age toning to this otherwise pristine cover, which has an archival mylar cover applied; Citadel Magazine Campus News clipping laid in. No marks or writing; corners square; hinges sound (probably unread); a very tiny faint blue mark at the head of the spine (see photos) which is likely a printer's smudge. Insurance required for shipping $4,850 US [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
