        Stockton Silver Hammer - 1-15

Stockton, California: [no publisher]. 1970. A run of the first 15 issues of the biweekly alternative newspaper Stockton Silver Hammer. Each is a tabloid sized issue. Overall near fine with some toning to the cheap newsprint, waviness to later issues and all folded once as issued. The newspaper covered everything you would expect from an alternative newspaper in the early 1970s: the Vietnam War, unfair police enforcement, drug laws, entrenched politicians and (what they saw as) rigged elections. They also offered readers advice on drugs, abortion counseling, various protest efforts, woman's liberation, the struggle for Native American rights, the Kent State shootings, and the trial of the Soledad Brothers, to name a few. Most issues also included a plethora of spot illustration and full page cartoons by Gary Ratto and Carlos Lopez in the style of underground comixs of the day. The newspaper charged 15-cents per issue (unlike many of the other free underground newspapers across the country), possibly realizing it could not survive on advertising revenue in the mostly conservative Stockton area. If that was the case, they were unfortunately proved correct finally succumbing to printing costs after only 20 issues. OCLC locates five records, a mix of single issues and partial runs. .

After the Fall (Original screenplay for an unproduced film, circa 1970s)

N.p.: N.p., 1970. Original typescript screenplay for an unproduced film called "After the Fall," based on Arthur Miller's 1964 play about a Jewish intellectual living in New York. Miller's play opened on Broadway in 1964, at the ANTA Washington Square Theatre, ran for 208 performances, and closed on May 29, 1965. A TV movie of the play was released in 1974, but Mann appears to have not been involved in the project. Abby Mann (1927-2008) wrote screenplays for "Judgment at Nuremberg" (1961), earning him an Academy Award, "A Child Is Waiting" (1963), "Ship of Fools" (1965), "The Detective" (1968), "Report to the Commissioner" (1975), and "War and Love (1985). His work also extended into television, for series like "Medical Story" (1975-1976) and "Kojak" (1973-1978), a show he helped create, and several "Kojak" TV movies. Black wrappers. Title page present, undated, with credits for playwright Miller and screenwriter Mann. 195 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 194. Typescript on white stock. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound in a black spring binder.

        The Blessing Way

London: Macmillan, 1970. First British Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine in Plastic Cover. A beautiful First Edition (U.K.) of Tony Hillerman's First Book, signed by Tony Hillerman, one of America's favorite authors. The book is Near Fine blue cloth with the very slightest touches of lightness on the spine ends, and two very faint marks on the page edges, all barely noticeable; otherwise very clean and bright. The Near Fine dustjacket is complete with original price intact and very light touches of soiling at the edges; the front and back panels are coated in light plastic so it is difficult to say if this has yellowed at all (it is cream-colored) but it has certainly protected the dustjacket from tears or scrapes; the interior of the dustjacket (next to the book) is pristine. One of the most desirable "First Books" by an American author, this is a beautiful copy in archival plastic cover by this revered writer who rarely signs any longer.

George Harrison at a press conference for "All Things Must Pass," circa 1970 (Original oversize press photograph)

Gök in Sipahio lu, Paris 1970 - Vintage borderless black-and-white press photograph of George Harrison at press conference for the release of his legendary 1970 album, "All Things Must Pass." Shot by noted Turkish photographer Gök in Sipahio lu, with his Parisian press stamp on the verso.Without question, 1970 was Harrison's shining hour as a solo artist. Less than a year later, he would trim his hair from the length show here (and on the album's cover) to a more reasonable look and helm the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City, featuring Eric Clapton, Badfinger, and other musicians who populated his 1970 album. This photograph was taken by Sipahio lu when he was still working as an independent frontline photojournalist, routinely contributing to Black Star and Gamma. In 1973 he would found the Sipa Press, an agency that would represent the world's best photographers for the next 30 years.7.75 x 12 inches (19.5 x 30.5 cm). Very Good plus, with some light creasing at the corners.

Original oil painting, "Paysage méditerranéen, port avec barques".

Paris,, 1970. Oil on board. 74 × 51 cm. Framed. Signed as Epfs and dated. Some minor warping to the board but in excellent condition. One of the forty or so paintings exhibited in Paris at the Librairie Marthe Nochy in 1970. Durrell mounted this exhibition as a vehicle for one of his many alter egos, Oscar Epfs. In terms of pure commerce it was something of a failure: a mere handful of the works were sold. But Durrell apparently revelled in the failure. He was however quite serious about his painting, following Miller in the pursuit, and continued making pictures until his death. This present example is one of very few large-scale oils by him and certainly one of the most accomplished of the paintings we have seen.
