Rank Xerox [1970], N.p. - Quarto (29.5cm); black and white illustrated wrappers; [52]pp; illus. Text is entirely in Italian. Neat rubber-stamp of Austrian painter and professor Anton J. Storch-Alberti (1892-1976) to lower left corner of front wrapper, with a brief inked notation and date to same; mild toning and wear to spine and wrapper extremities, else a Very Good+ to Near Fine copy. Attractive copy of Munari's important monograph on the use of the photocopier in art, and its democratic potential for usage by individuals without artistic training. Bruno Munari (1907-1998) was an Italian artist, designer, and inventor, and one of the first artists to experiment with the Xerox machine as a medium. Xerografia contains wonderfully-rendered images of his experiments with the Rank Xerox machines capabilities, including examples of his demonstrations at the Museum of Modern Art in Tokyo and the 35th Venice Biennale. Scarce; OCLC shows 12 holdings, of these, only 4 in U.S. institutions (MOMA, Smithsonian, Cleveland Museum of Art, U.Washington). [Attributes: First Edition]

        Future Shock

NY: Random House. (1970). Two volumes: both a review copy of the first edition and the uncorrected proof copy of Toffler's massively successful book naming the disorientation caused by the accelerated pace of cultural and technological change. The first edition has some mild edge-foxing and is near fine in a very near fine dust jacket with a shallow crease to the rear panel. Folded in fourths and laid in are three different 2-legal-page press releases: "Future Shock May Be Key Disease of Tomorrow," "Movement for 'Responsible Technology' Needed to Combat Future Shock," and "To Prevent Future Shock, Schools Must Teach About Tomorrow." From the first: "When people complain they can't cope, what is it they can't cope with?" From the second: "... technological questions can no longer be answered in technological terms alone. 'They are political questions...we need a machinery for screening machines.'" From the third: "Today events are moving so swiftly that only another [post-John Dewey] radical shift in our 'time-bias' can save our children. The schools must develop future-consciousness." Together with the uncorrected proof copy, which is a tall, fragile, pad-bound proof, the text block of which seems perfectly fine, but the covers and spine have some staining and insect damage, and the covers are likely to detach in time. Because of the fragile nature of the proof, only a cursory search was made for textual variations from the published version, which revealed only that the Acknowledgements were moved from front to rear (and the spelling changed) and a change was made to the book's dedication. Uncommon advance states of one of the bestselling books of its time, and a book whose title became a part of the vernacular. First Edition. Hardcover.

        Adventures Among the Toroids

Okemos, Michigan: Published by the author, 1970 Tall perfectbound paperback (13" x 5"); 206 pp. A bizarre, nearly impenetrable book for the layperson (or at least for this cataloguer) written, illustrated and hand-lettered by the author in Chancery Script with Osmiroid pens. Sub-titled, "A study of quasi-convex, aplanar, tunneled orientable polyhedra of positive genus having regular faces with disjoint interiors, being an elaborate description and instructions for the construction of an enormous number of new and fascinating mathematical models of interest to students of euclidean geometry and topology, both secondary and collegiate, to designers, engineers and architects, to the scientific audience concerned with molecular and other structural problems, and to mathematicians, both professional and dilettante, with hundreds of exercises and search projects many completely outlined for self-instruction." A second edition was published in 1980, although both are scarce in the trade. Bonnie Stewart was a professor of mathematics at Michigan State University from 1940-1980 and the author of Theory of Numbers (1952). Covers are rubbed and a bit scratched; one small tear at crown; corners bumped; some very minor soiling along top edge (not affecting margins or text block at all); owner's name to front free endpaper, else clean and bright throughout. A Very Good copy of this influential and idiosyncratic book.

Insomnia, or the Devil at Large

Loujon Press, Albuquerque 1970 - 1970 ('First edition book & portfolio' . . . 'Edition F'). A portfolio comprising 12 large loose plates after watercolours and drawings by Miller; a book (quarto; comb-bound in plain stiff boards, with a decorative wrap-around dustwrapper); and a title-plate mounted on a sheet of thick card, in a large foam-lined decorated wooden box, with a plate (from a photograph of the author and his wife) and the original purchaser's engraved metal name-plate (noting the edition) mounted on the sliding lid. The plates are uniformly in fine or near-fine condition (three plates have a few very light fingermarks to the blank margins). The plain boards of the book are a little offset, and there is trifling surface adhesion damage to the dustwrapper; an excellent copy. The wooden box is a little rubbed, with one tiny mark to the plate mounted on the lid. Overall, an excellent example of this deluxe production from the Loujon Press. The book is a facsimile of Miller's manuscript reflection, agonising about his relationship with his wife Hiroko 'Hoki' Tokuda. Number 12 of 99 copies of Edition F (the limitation is stamped and hand-numbered at the rear of the book), with three of the plates dated ('10/15/70') and signed by the author in pencil beneath the printed signatures, as called for in this edition. Salzburg, AUSTRIA: Residenz Verlag, 1970. First Edition Thus 1/200 Deluxe. 4to. Decorated Cloth in Jacket. Artist Monograph. Fine/Fine. 212pp, 106 illustrations in b&w. Text in English. Designed by Walter Pichler. "Architectura Caelestis" - subtitled "Images of the Hidden Prime of Styles" is Viennese School of Fantastic Realism member Ernst Fuchs' treatise on the significance and influence of arcane mathematics in Architectural form over the centuries. A striking production, it is illustrated by the author in black and white and bears a similarity to the self-published works of Stanislav Szukalski.
