        The Blessing Way

London: Macmillan, 1970. First British Edition. Cloth. Near Fine/Near Fine in Plastic Cover. A beautiful First Edition (U.K.) of Tony Hillerman's First Book, signed by Tony Hillerman, one of America's favorite authors. The book is Near Fine blue cloth with the very slightest touches of lightness on the spine ends, and two very faint marks on the page edges, all barely noticeable; otherwise very clean and bright. The Near Fine dustjacket is complete with original price intact and very light touches of soiling at the edges; the front and back panels are coated in light plastic so it is difficult to say if this has yellowed at all (it is cream-colored) but it has certainly protected the dustjacket from tears or scrapes; the interior of the dustjacket (next to the book) is pristine. One of the most desirable "First Books" by an American author, this is a beautiful copy in archival plastic cover by this revered writer who rarely signs any longer.

George Harrison at a press conference for "All Things Must Pass," circa 1970 (Original oversize press photograph)

Gök in Sipahio lu, Paris 1970 - Vintage borderless black-and-white press photograph of George Harrison at press conference for the release of his legendary 1970 album, "All Things Must Pass." Shot by noted Turkish photographer Gök in Sipahio lu, with his Parisian press stamp on the verso.Without question, 1970 was Harrison's shining hour as a solo artist. Less than a year later, he would trim his hair from the length show here (and on the album's cover) to a more reasonable look and helm the Concert for Bangladesh in New York City, featuring Eric Clapton, Badfinger, and other musicians who populated his 1970 album. This photograph was taken by Sipahio lu when he was still working as an independent frontline photojournalist, routinely contributing to Black Star and Gamma. In 1973 he would found the Sipa Press, an agency that would represent the world's best photographers for the next 30 years.7.75 x 12 inches (19.5 x 30.5 cm). Very Good plus, with some light creasing at the corners.

Original oil painting, "Paysage méditerranéen, port avec barques".

Paris,, 1970. Oil on board. 74 × 51 cm. Framed. Signed as Epfs and dated. Some minor warping to the board but in excellent condition. One of the forty or so paintings exhibited in Paris at the Librairie Marthe Nochy in 1970. Durrell mounted this exhibition as a vehicle for one of his many alter egos, Oscar Epfs. In terms of pure commerce it was something of a failure: a mere handful of the works were sold. But Durrell apparently revelled in the failure. He was however quite serious about his painting, following Miller in the pursuit, and continued making pictures until his death. This present example is one of very few large-scale oils by him and certainly one of the most accomplished of the paintings we have seen.

        Adventures Among the Toroids

Okemos, Michigan: Published by the author 1970 - Tall perfectbound paperback (13" x 5"); 206 pp. A bizarre, nearly impenetrable book for the layperson (or at least for this cataloguer) written, illustrated and hand-lettered by the author in Chancery Script with Osmiroid pens. Sub-titled, "A study of quasi-convex, aplanar, tunneled orientable polyhedra of positive genus having regular faces with disjoint interiors, being an elaborate description and instructions for the construction of an enormous number of new and fascinating mathematical models of interest to students of euclidean geometry and topology, both secondary and collegiate, to designers, engineers and architects, to the scientific audience concerned with molecular and other structural problems, and to mathematicians, both professional and dilettante, with hundreds of exercises and search projects many completely outlined for self-instruction." A second edition was published in 1980, although both are scarce in the trade. Bonnie Stewart was a professor of mathematics at Michigan State University from 1940-1980 and the author of Theory of Numbers (1952). Covers are rubbed and a bit scratched; one small tear at crown; corners bumped; some very minor soiling along top edge (not affecting margins or text block at all); owner's name to front free endpaper, else clean and bright throughout. A Very Good copy of this influential and idiosyncratic book. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Gimme Shelter (Original maquette, proof, and final print of a variant poster for the 1970 film)

Maysles Films, New York 1970 - Archive including the paste-up maquette, proof, and final print of a photo-montage variant poster for the 1970 film, made for its premiere in New York City, and posted strictly on walls around the city. A poster design that, unlike the final one used, conveys the chaos, bleakness, and ultimately depressive air of the documentary, and one that arguably influenced Robert Frank's montage design for the cover of the band's next record, the seminal "Exile on Main Street."A legendary documentary, chronicling the final weeks of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour behind "Let It Bleed," culminating in the disastrous free concert at Altamont Speedway. A film associated with the Direct Cinema movement of the 1950s and 1960s, of which the Maysles were an important part, but just as much the beginning of a new style of "reactionary" documentary filmmaking, wherein the events being documented lead the film rather than the film being led by a preconceived idea.Maquette: 18 x 25.5 (46 x 65 cm), executed on art board with tape, with its original tissue overlay, with some browning to the tape, but not the maquette itself, Very Good to Near Fine overall. Proof: 9 x 15.5 inches (23 x 40 cm), glossy stock, rolled, with a few tiny stains at the top margin, easily Near Fine. Poster: 29.75 x 44.5 (75.5 x 114 cm), rolled, on archival linen, Fine.Criterion Collection 99. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Rainbow Bridge

[Los Angeles, 1970. Title and ornaments printed in yellow; text printed in purple. Text in two columns. 1 vols. 17-1/2 x 11-1/2. A couple of light folds. Near fine. Title and ornaments printed in yellow; text printed in purple. Text in two columns. 1 vols. 17-1/2 x 11-1/2. Jimi Hendrix and the 'Higher Self'. Fascinating and visionary artistic statement by director Chuck Wein on the eve of his travel to Maui to film Rainbow Bridge, "a journey into consciousness … a microcosm of what's happening on the planet right now". The film is notable for including a long segment filmed at a Jimi Hendrix concert on Maui, one of his last performances before his untimely death. The broadside was transcribed from a tape recording by editor David, whose introductory note says "I could just give him the mike and he would rap and rap and ask his own questions and answer them, and I could just sit and listen with Barry and Hartley and Daniel and Theresa and Leslie while Chuck did his thing until the tape ran out …" Wein graduated magna cum laude from Harvard and spent several years in the orbit of Andy Warhol's Factory. He was closely involved with the 1965 films My Hustler, Poor Little Rich Girl, and Beauty #2, that made his friend Edie Sedgwick into a star, but Wein later broke with Warhol. In 1970, Wein and his Antahkarana production outfit filmed Rainbow Bridge on location in Maui. In this self-interview, Wein says he is "trying to portray the journey into consciousness most of us have been going through in the past five to ten years. Call it the dawn of the Aquarian Age or whatever … doing away with the artificial line between 'film reality' and 'real reality'". The involvement of Jimi Hendrix was key in the production of Rainbow Bridge. Wein says that people "seem to be interested a lot in the fact that Jimi Hendrix will be doing the soundtrack. Hendrix is somebody who has tapped a very high energy source and is right now trying to find a way to channel that high energy that he's tapped; and it's a struggle between his Lower and Higher Self to manifest that energy in a way that will help out his fellow man. Maybe this will be the vehicle through which he'll be able to do that - we certainly hope so." Wein talks about "people who are in contact with the space brothers", the lost continents of Atlantis and Lemuria, communal living, and "thoughtforms". A proto-New Age manifesto. UNRECORDED.

An apposite association copy: for two years in the 1960s Bruce Davidson photographed the people living on one city block in East Harlem, New York, using a large-format view camera.
