ROSUL NEGORI

1970 ca.. Tiratura: 34/50.

        The Collected Edition

Heinemann/Bodley Head -72, London 1970 - 20 vols. (lacking vols. 11 and , 8vos. Original green boards, lettered in gilt to spines. Spines a little browned, top edges dusty, but a very good set in dustwrappers with some slight wear to spine ends. Dustwrappers of vols. 20 and 21 a little more worn, front flap of vol. 21 detached but present. The Collected Edition, THE FIRST EIGHT VOLUMES ALL INSCRIBED BY GREENE TO THE ACCOUNTANT MICHAEL HENSHAW ON FRONT FREE ENDPAPERS. 20 volumes of 22, lacking vol. 11 (The Quiet American) and vol. 22 (The Human Factor). Each volume carries an introduction especially written by Greene for this edition. Michael Henshaw was a London-based accountant whose client list included many British and American literary names of the late twentieth century, among them Ted Hughes, Allen Ginsberg, Ken Loach, Monty Python (all of them), Alexander Trocchi, Simon Gray and David Hare. Jean Rhys was also a client: according to Diana Athill, Sonia Orwell had recommended Henshaw to her '.on the grounds that he liked good writing and drank a lot.' Henshaw's unorthodox -- some might say inventive -- approach to the finer points of book-keeping ensured frequent run-ins with the Inland Revenue, but his willingness to accept manuscripts and signed books as payment, combined with his generous interpretation of the term 'professional expense', kept his extensive client list loyal. Greene would have had no need of such perks, and it's unclear whether Henshaw ever worked on his behalf. The eight novels inscribed to him here seem all to have been inscribed by Greene on the same occasion: same ink, same wording. The fact that the others in the collection remained unsigned suggests that the relationship between the two men was fleeting, and that the inscriptions were solicited rather than offered. A unique set (lacking two easily-found volumes).

The Crayon, A Journal Devoted To The Graphic Arts, And The Literature Related To Them; Vols.1-8 (1855-July, 1861)

New York: AMS Press, 1970. Hardbound. VG. Blue institutional cloth as published. 4 volumes, each containing reprints of two original volumes. Vol.s 1 & 2 (416 [vi] & 408 [iv] pp.); Vol.s 3 & 4 (380 [vi] & 380 [iv] pp.); Vol.s 5 & 6 (360 [vi] & 384 [iv] pp.); & Vol.s 7 & 8 (358 [vi] & 152 [iv] pp.). All w/Indexes. Complete sets of this periodical are highly uncommon. This reprint edition, put out in 1970, is almost as hard to find now as original issues and volumes. The Crayon is regarded as one of the best art periodicals of the time, and is a reliable source of ontemporary opinion. Contributors included Rembrandt Peale, Asher B. Durand, Daniel Huntington. Correspondents included John Ruskin, James Russell Lowell and W.M. Rossetti. Regular features included domestic art gossip, exhibition reviews, book notices, and some attention to architecture and landscape gardening, "two of the most popular departments of Art of the Day". Limited number of advertisements on the covers indicate diverse art activities. Feature article reveal an inclination towards English, German, French, and Greek art history. (Karpel S112).

Three Gregynog Englynion. (SIGNED PROOF COPY PLUS CORRESPONDENCE)

Privately printed by the author on the Gregynog Albion during his term at first Gregynog Arts Fellow in the University of Wales, August, 1970, No Binding, Book Condition: Good, 1st Edition, Signed by Author(s). A single foolscap sheet, folded to form four leaves. This is a signed proof of an edition which ran to just five copies (several days later he produced a second printing of the three englynion, this time limited to 20 copies). Paperstock a little tanned at margins, and nicked, creased and a little torn at edges, with the upper left corner absent but all text unaffected. Bryan Johnson began his six-month Gregynog Fellowship in February 1970 (a period of his life he later described as 'idyllic' and which permitted him the time and resources to write his novel 'House Mother Normal'). Towards the end of the Fellowship he was unable to withstand the lure of the hallowed Gregynog Albion Press and decided, along with the help (and indeed hindrance) of his friend Philip Pacey to use the Press to attempt to print the three short poems he had composed during that six-month period, each experimenting with the Welsh verse form englyn. The whole process was fraught with problems and in one instance genuine danger: Johnson provided a full account of the misadventures in his essay 'The Gregynog Press and The Gregynog Fellowship' which appeared in a spring 1973 issue of 'The Private Library'. Extremely uncommon - bar the three differing print runs he produced at Gregynog, these poems were never reproduced. Supplied together with a selection of letters from Johnson to fellow poet Jeremy Hooker. The correspondence comprises two postcards and five typewritten letters spanning May 1970 - July 1972 (he committed suicide a little over a year later) and covers a multitude of subjects including his work for 'Transatlantic Review' (he was the poetry editor), discussion of several of his novels and constant encouragement and praise for Hooker's own verse. The letters are insightful and often witty (Jack Russells are several times referred to 'Ken Russells' and the line about house-training them is completely baffling until you recognise the joke), but sadly his tone becomes increasingly downbeat as the depression which was to end his life fully takes hold. Also included is the issue of 'The Private Library' which includes his Gregynog reminiscences, a short handwritten note from Jo McCrindle, founding editor of Transatlantic Review', which briefly references Johnson, and a first edition copy of Jonathan Coe's biography 'Like a Fiery Elephant', fine in dust wrapper.

(Dico Solo, pp.252-254).
