Bookplates in the News, A Run of the First Eighty-Six Issues, 1970-1991, with 243 Tipped-In Bookplates [American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers]

Pasadena, Alhambra, CA: American Society of Bookplate Collectors and Designers/Audrey Spencer Arellanes, July 1970 October 1991. Paperback. Near Fine. Straight run of 86 issues. Loose leaf, 21.6 by 27.9 cm, 936 pp. (cumulative pagination), illus. The first three issues have staples or staple-holes and a few pencil marks, the last sheet (p. 935/6) has some creases and yellowing; the remaining issues are fine or near fine. The official newsletter of the ASBC&D, BIN provided information about bookplates, their artists and illustrators, bookplate owners, and bookplate exhibits, as well as including reviews of the literature on bookplates and annotated bibliographical references. Issues were apparently printed as needed, and since there were at times not enough plates to tip-in to the entire run especially in later issues when membership was in the 200s the tipped-in examples may differ from copy to copy. This set, from the collection of Frederick Ruffner, the publisher behind Detroits Gale Research Group, and whose original bookplate is tipped-in on p. 246, is presumably the original from which Gales edition of Bookplates in the News was assembled (see item no. XXXX). Individual copies of this newsletter are quite scarce, and this set includes twenty-six issues not found in the Gale edition. Dated material, such as exchange lists and Society events, are kept to a minimum, making BIN a wonderful bibliographic resource for bookplate collectors especially the artist and collector bios. Issue one, a modest one-page affair, is stapled to a short typed, signed letter from Arellanes to Mr. Ruffner and a mimeographed letter to the ASBC&D membership. BIN quickly grew to ten to sixteen pages per issue. Included in its pages are 243 original tipped-in bookplates (16 are pencil signed), as well as several tipped-in reproductions. Most of the plates were designed by member artists or are personal or institutional plates belonging to members or member libraries or universities. The artists who designed the tipped-in plates include Sara Eugenia Blake, Fred Thompson, Anthony F. Kroll, Philip Reed, Enrico Vannaccini, Kirk Martin, Wojchech Jakubowski, James Hayes, Robert Hill, Pall Bohne, Fridolf Johnson, Werner R. Eilers, Leo Sarkadi, Vytautas Virkau, William Cheney, Ryozo Hirakata, Mitsuomi Furutate, Bela Petry, Paul McPharlin, Henrietta Vepstas, Sarah Chamberlain, Wang Hui-Ming, Marshall Glasier, Maxwell Hamilton Noll, Joy Weygand, Hilda Wiseman, Jurgen Dost, Anatolij Kalashnikow, Simon Brett, Hewitt R. Also included is an index for issues 31-34. NOTE: Due to the weight of this collection, additional postage will be required for orders outside of the Unites States. (os)

Les aventures d' Antoine Doinel [The Adventures of Antoine Doinel] (First French Edition, Inscribed to Maurice Bessy)

Mercure de France, Paris 1970 - First French Edition, preceding all others. Warmly INSCRIBED by Truffaut to French cinema historian and writer Maurice Bessy on the half-title page. Bessy is best known for various associations with Orson Welles, most notably his work with the director on "Mr. Arkadin." Truffaut's second book, containing his screenplays for the first four Antoine Doinel films. The Doinel character, realized onscreen over a number of years by Jean-Pierre Leaud, was Truffaut's autobiographical double, and the films compiled here begin in Doinel's childhood with "The 400 Blows" (1959) and continue through adolescence and early manhood with "Antoine and Colette" (1962), "Stolen Kisses" (1968), and "Bed and Board" (1970). Quite uncommon in dust jacket, and a wonderful association with Bessy, a major figure in French and world cinema of the 1950s and 1960s.Near Fine in card wrappers in a Near Fine dust jacket.

5 original renderings of the construction of the World Trade Center

New York and New Jersey, 1970. Watercolor paintings on paper, each about 13 x 20 inches. Matted, with minor wear, numbered on verso. Watercolor paintings on paper, each about 13 x 20 inches. Nicholas Solovioff (1927-1994) was the artist in residence of the Port of New York Authority. He made the most of this opportunity and completed a series of paintings of the early construction of the World Trade Center towers. No doubt these drawings of the early stages of construction -- all from Feb. 1970, were commissioned by the Port Authority and are of unquestionable documentary and artistic value to a legendary architectural project. One depicts the exposed girders of one of the towers under construction, and another appears to depict the antenna. The other three document an unusual obstacle faced by the construction crew in February of 1970. A tugboat strike halted the usual system of bringing girders to the site by boat. After efforts to use helicopters failed, the massive girders were trucked through the Lincoln Tunnel.

Vol.s 1 & 2 (416 [vi] & 408 [iv] pp.); Vol.s 3 & 4 (380 [vi] & 380 [iv] pp.); Vol.s 5 & 6 (360 [vi] & 384 [iv] pp.); & Vol.s 7 & 8 (358 [vi] & 152 [iv] pp.). All w/Indexes. The Crayon is regarded as one of the best art periodicals of the time, and is a reliable source of ontemporary opinion. Contributors included Rembrandt Peale, Asher B. Durand, Daniel Huntington. Correspondents included John Ruskin, James Russell Lowell and W.M. Rossetti. Regular features included domestic art gossip, exhibition reviews, book notices, and some attention to architecture and landscape gardening, "two of the most popular departments of Art of the Day". Limited number of advertisements on the covers indicate diverse art activities. Feature article reveal an inclination towards English, German, French, and Greek art history. (Karpel S112).

        Berlin Suite

6 original silkscreens, 30 11/16 x 40 3/16 in., by the German printmaker and graphic designer Gerd Winner, depicting the polarized urban landscape of West Berlin in 1970 through architectural and monumental icons of West German industrial wealth and political ambitions (the Victory column; Hotel Metro, modeled on the famous Berliner Dom; and the façade of a metal foundry) and the working-class, proletariat "monuments" of a Kreuzberg backyard, a public urinal, and the Hallesches Tor subway station, each rendered with the photo-based, color-block graphic treatment characteristic of German Pop Art. Prints loose as issued, a few with pinholes at corners, otherwise fine condition. London (Kelpra) 1970. Limited to an edition of 100, signed and numbered by the artist in pencil. The sizable prints offer stylized and affective testimony to the social and cultural conflicts that emerged in West Berlin during the late 1960s and early 1970s. Winner's achievements in the graphic arts are well-known, particularly through his persistent engagement with urbanism in extensive print cycles documenting Berlin, London, and New York. In July 2014 OCLC is unable to locate a North American institutional holding, though the suite appears in the collection of Tate Modern, London.
