        In the Night Kitchen

1970 - SENDAK, Maurice. In The Night Kitchen. [New York]: Harper and Row, (1970). Tall thin quarto, original white cloth, mounted cover illustration, original dust jacket. $6500.Scarce first edition, advance review copy, of this wonderfully illustrated classic, inscribed for Burt Britton, the avid book collector and co-founder of Books & Co: "For Burt""Mazel-Tov! Maurice Sendak. Dec. '70," with a small self-portrait by Sendak (presumably casting himself as Mickey). With publisher's advance review slip laid in.Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen "spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz." Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is "a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency" (Silvey, 586). It was a Caldecott Honor book in 1971. First-issue dust jacket, without the Caldecott medal affixed. Hanrahan A75. This copy is inscribed to Burt Britton, an avid book collector and eventually the co-founder of Books & Co in New York City. While working as a bartender at Village Vanguard in New York, Burt Britton found himself alone with Norman Mailer. When Mailer asked Britton, "What do you want from me, Kid?" after last call, Britton replied that he wanted Mailed to draw him a self-portrait. Mailer did and so began a lifelong collecting interest. Britton collected hundreds of self-portraits""first while working at Vanguard and later while working at the Strand bookstore. He solicited self-portraits from novelists such as Truman Capote and Jorge Luis Borges, from musicians such as Miles Davis, and even from sports stars such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Before long, he was the owner of an exceptionally valuable collection. Random House eventually bought book rights to a selection of the portraits in 1976 as Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves. In 1978, Britton moved to Books and Co. and continued his collection. This book contains a self-portrait sketch by Maurice Sendak, apparently implying that Mickey from In the Night Kitchen is him (or perhaps that all of his characters are him, as his self-portrait sketch in Where the Wild Things Are portrayed him as a Wild Thing).Book fine, bright, corner-clipped dust jacket with only slightest rubbing to extremities. A very nearly fine inscribed copy with a wonderful provenance. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

The Decision to Go to the Moon.

Cambridge, MASS, and London, England: The MIT Press,, 1970. Project Apollo and the National Interest. Octavo. Original blue cloth. With the dust jacket. Mild fading along board edges, an excellent copy with the jacket nicked at the corners and chipped on the rear bottom corner closest the spine. First edition, first printing, presentation copy inscribed to NASA administrator Dr. Homer E Newell Jr. on the front free endpaper, "8/24/70, To Homer Newell, with Warm Regards, John Logsdon". This book is very scarce inscribed, and superb with such an association. Dr Homer E. Newell Jr. (1915-1983) was a mathematics professor and author who became a powerful US government science administrator, rising eventually to the third in command of NASA. In the early 1960s he controlled or influenced virtually all non-military unmanned space missions for the free world. He played a significant role in the negotiations which led to the creation of NASA, chairing a committee of rocket and satellite experimenters that drafted a consensus plan for a national space establishment which was presented to Eisenhower's science advisor, and advising the Senate preparedness investigating subcommittee... When the legislation establishing NASA was passed in 1958, Newell was given credit by his peers, including Van Allen, who called him "The Spark Plug" for a strong space science element in NASA. Newell joined NASA in 1958 (the year this book was published), and was successively assistant director for space sciences (1958-1960), deputy director of space flight programs (1960-1961), director of space sciences (1961-1963), associate administrator for space science and applications (1963-1967) and finally associate administrator of NASA, the third ranking position, from 1967 until 1974 (and as such overseeing the Moon Landing.) (1967-1974). In 1965, Newell was awarded the President's Award for Distinguished Federal Civilian Service. He was also commemorated in the Goddard Space Flight Center's Homer E. Newell memorial library, and asteroid 2086 Newell.

Three Gregynog Englynion. (SIGNED PROOF COPY PLUS CORRESPONDENCE)

Privately printed by the author on the Gregynog Albion during his term at first Gregynog Arts Fellow in the University of Wales, August, 1970. A single foolscap sheet, folded to form four leaves. This is a signed proof of an edition which ran to just five copies (several days later he produced a second printing of the three englynion, this time limited to 20 copies). Paperstock a little tanned at margins, and nicked, creased and a little torn at edges, with the upper left corner absent but all text unaffected. Bryan Johnson began his six-month Gregynog Fellowship in February 1970 (a period of his life he later described as 'idyllic' and which permitted him the time and resources to write his novel 'House Mother Normal'). Towards the end of the Fellowship he was unable to withstand the lure of the hallowed Gregynog Albion Press and decided, along with the help (and indeed hindrance) of his friend Philip Pacey to use the Press to attempt to print the three short poems he had composed during that six-month period, each experimenting with the Welsh verse form englyn. The whole process was fraught with problems and in one instance genuine danger: Johnson provided a full account of the misadventures in his essay 'The Gregynog Press and The Gregynog Fellowship' which appeared in a spring 1973 issue of 'The Private Library'. Extremely uncommon - bar the three differing print runs he produced at Gregynog, these poems were never reproduced. Supplied together with a selection of letters from Johnson to fellow poet Jeremy Hooker. The correspondence comprises two postcards and five typewritten letters spanning May 1970 - July 1972 (he committed suicide a little over a year later) and covers a multitude of subjects including his work for 'Transatlantic Review' (he was the poetry editor), discussion of several of his novels and constant encouragement and praise for Hooker's own verse. The letters are insightful and often witty (Jack Russells are several times referred to 'Ken Russells' and the line about house-training them is completely baffling until you recognise the joke), but sadly his tone becomes increasingly downbeat as the depression which was to end his life fully takes hold. Also included is the issue of 'The Private Library' which includes his Gregynog reminiscences, a short handwritten note from Jo McCrindle, founding editor of Transatlantic Review', which briefly references Johnson, and a first edition copy of Jonathan Coe's biography 'Like a Fiery Elephant', fine in dust wrapper.. Signed by Author(s). 1st Edition. No Binding. Good.

The Wrapper is complete and also is in Fine condition. The Stanley Chapman designed wrapper looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. A very sharp copy. Translated by Bernard Guilbert Guerney with an introduction and Bibliographical note by Michael Glenny. 'Over a half-century since its appearance, the novel WE remains one of the most exciting and influential works of science fiction. Its basic plot, whereby a true believer comes to question the validity of a totalitarian state and thus to transform it from a utopia into an anti-utopia, has been repeated by Aldous Huxley in BRAVE NEW WORLD (1932), George Orwell in NINETEEN EIGHTY-FOUR (1949) and by any number of epigones; yet its artistry, prophetic power, and underlying philosophy have not been surpassed.' - Survey of Science Fiction Literature V, pp. 2433-41.       ca 1970. Legatura in tela verde.

Between Two Ages - America's Role in the Technetronic Era

Viking, 1970. 334 pages including index. "The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "technetronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems. Part 1 describes the impact of the scientific revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminators, the US. Part 2 examines how this has effected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. Part 3 assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. Part 4 focuses upon the US, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition - as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. Part 5 outlines in broad terms the general direction the US might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas." - from dust jacket (not included). "This is one of the most original books on political and social thought to appear in recent years. The author projects the impact of technology and electronics on the political and social values of the United States, the Soviet Union and other 'post - industrial' states. As a study of global society in transition, this seminal work is bound to elicit major controversy and will be difficult to ignore." - Foreign Affairs. Bit of soiling to fore - edge else clean and unmarked with light wear. A quality copy.

        I Remember

Angel Hair. First American editions 1970-1973, New York - Four volumes: I Remember, I Remember More (this copy inscribed to Burt Britten, of the Strand Bookstore, by the author), More I Remember More and I Remember Christmas. The complete original sequence of the author’s masterpiece. The first three vols. published by Anne Waldman, poet and Brainard collaborator, in editions of 700, 800 and 700 copies respectively. The final, subject specific volume, with illustrations by the author, published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1973. The artist and writer’s first solo books. I Remember was popular from publication, no less than three sequels in three years, and now, 40+ years on, after absorbing imitations by individuals and appropriation by writing courses, is maintaining a modest publishing momentum – Brainard collected, rearranged, and added to these initial versions for a one volume edition published by Full Court Press (1975), Penguin reprinted this edition (1995), so did Granary (2001), it was included in the Library of America’s Collected Joe Brainard and Notting Hill Editions published the first English edition (both 2012) – while the appeal of what Joe Brainard did with his combination of ingredients remains as seductive and mysterious as ever.         Sentinel Rock and Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point Trail, Yosemite [1923] Printed by Alan Ross from Ansel Adams' original negative under his supervision

Yosemite National Park, California: the Ansel Adams Gallery, circa 1970s. - Silver gelatin print, printed later, stamped 'Special Edition / Photographs of Yosemite by Ansel Adams / Sentinel Rock and Yosemite Valley from Glacier Point Trail, Yosemite [National Park, California', 'Printed by Alan Ross from Ansel Adams' original negative' verso with pencil initial , 7-1/2 x 91/8 inches on board 16.5 x 13.5 inches."Ansel's intent was to present photography as an affordable art and to showcase the environmental grandeur of Yosemite National Park. Never much a fan of the "curios" that were the staple of most Park concessioners at the time, he also wanted to offer visitors a quality memento of their time in Yosemite. The 8 10 prints would be made from the original negatives by an assistant under Ansel's precise direction and be printed in sufficiently large batches to make them affordable. This collection, entitled the Yosemite Special Edition Photographs, proved immensely popular, and over the years, Ansel added more images to the set until the total was capped at 30 at the time of his passing in 1984.Today, Best's Studio is known as the Ansel Adams Gallery, and continues as a family-run business. Ansel's Special Edition Photographs of Yosemite are a mainstay of the Gallery's offerings and heritage. Each print is still made by hand directly from Ansel's original negatives, using his approach and methodology to ensure strict adherence to his standards and aesthetic."Provenance: Peter Howard, Serendipity Books, Berkeley.

London: Jonathan Cape,, 1970. Translated from the Spanish by Gregory Rabassa. Octavo. Original blue boards, title to spine gilt, top edge pink. With the pictorial dust jacket. An excellent, bright copy with the occasional faint spot to contents, in the jacket with a little rubbing to spine ends. First UK edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author on the half-title, "Gabriel. '85." together with an original ink drawing of a fish. It was first published in the US earlier the same year, and originally published in Argentina in 1967 under the title Cien años de soledad. From the library of the Irish book collector Dr Philip Murray. In his book, The Adventures of a Book Collector (2011), Murray writes: "I had heard that the Mexican postal system is one of the most unreliable anywhere in the world, but I decided to chance it and sent eleven books ? nearly a year went by without any further word. I was certain my luck had run out and I would never see my copies again ... the return package had burst open and had had to be repacked. All the books were inscribed and the author had drawn various images in some of them, so it was worth the wait".
