Harper & Row 1970 - First Edition, First printing SIGNED and dated by Sendak with a LARGE ORIGINAL DRAWING OF THE BAKER! Near fine with a near fine First state dust jacket. A very near fine crisp book, with clean oatmeal cloth with Mickey on the front. The book has sharp corners and no edgewear. The binding is tight and square. The end papers are in perfect condition being clean and bright with no owner names, no bookplates and no bookstore stamps. The internal pages are clean, bright and flat, being crisp and sharp with no writing, no handling marks, no bent pages, no stains and no foxing. A beautiful book appearing as unread. Signed and dated by Sendak in full signature, ¿Maurice Sendak/ July ¿73¿ and in addition, Maurice Sendak sketched a large drawing of one of the Bakers with a speech bubble saying ¿hi!¿. Please see detailed images. The original first state unrestored dust jacket is in near fine condition. The dust jacket has vibrant colors, with only a touch of rubbing to the spine tips, otherwise no edgewear, no chips, no rips, no fading and no foxing. No mention of the caldecott award and the $4.95 price on the dust jacket flap as required for the first printing status. 1070 is listed on the front flap and 7 titles are listed on the rear jacket flap. A striking jacket presenting the book well on the shelf. One of Sendaks more controversial titles due to the main characters pervasive nudity. A handsome clean, crisp example presenting well on the shelf. Scarce signed with an early signature and a stunning large drawing. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Sacramento: By the author, [1970]. 4 typescript poems on 8.5" x 11" stock. The group includes "Gargoyle of the Century" (2pp.); "Progress Report on Mankind for Inclusion in History Texts of Hilarity" (1p.); "The Torn Silent Monster" (1p.); "Purification Shock" (1p.). Old folds from mailing, impression from a slightly oxidized paper-clip to upper left corners, with one small holograph correction to "Gargoyle." Together with a 1-page autograph letter from Blazek to Gail Chiarello (ca.105 words), dated 7-9-70 and mailed from Blazek's Sacramento address; old folds, else well-preserved, in the roughly-opened original mailing envelope. Interesting group of items from the native Chicago poet and one of the principal figures of the mimeo revolution. Chiarrello was a poet, editor, and secretary to Lawrence Ferlinghetti; in his letter Blazek mentions the inclusion of the aforementioned poems for "the basement mimeo caper." He goes on to express his appreciation for Ferlinghetti's 1970 work Back Roads to Far Towns After Basho, mentioning he owns just about everything Ferlinghetti has written. "Gargolye of the Century" and "Progress Report on Mankind" were published in New Directions 24: An International Anthology of Prose and Poetry (1972), though we remain unclear as to whether the Basement Lights "mimeo caper" was ever pulled off.

ALCHERINGA: Ethnopoetics Vol. 1 No. 1 [through] Vol. 4 No. 2 [Thirteen Issues, Complete Run]

New York / Boston: Jerome Rothenberg and Dennis Tedlock / Boston University, 1970-1980. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. 8vo. Thirteen issues in perfect-bound wraps. Altogether, issues about very good to very good plus. Wraps show some modest toning, handling wear, and rubbing here and there; several mild corner creases, small tears to covers. Interiors remain bright, crisp, and clean throughout; binding good and sound. Several include flexi-disc records. Overall an impressive set. Full run of this literary magazine which served as central organ for the ethnopoetics movement (whose primary theorists were both Rothenberg and Tedlock). As described in Issue #1, the movement's objectives were manifold, but ethnopoetics sought above all to promote attention toward poetic practices outside the Western tradition, with the ethical aim of "combat[ting] cultural genocide in all its manifestations." A typical issue featured translated from various third-world societies, along with anthropological remarks on local poetic practices, but also often included original work by Western poets and artists including Diane di Prima, Gary Snyder, Charles Olson, and Pauline Oliveros (for example). Several issues include flexi-disc recordings of readings and performances, and one includes theoretical essays by Edouard Glissant, Fredric Jameson, and others. A nicely preserved run of this unique publication.

Los Angeles, California: Ed Ruscha, 1970. Second Printing. SOFTCOVER ORIGINAL. NEAR FINE. 8vo. Leporello wrappers in slipcase. Second printing (1/5000) of Ruscha's famous , self-published, accordion-fold artist book, which unfolds to a length of 27 feet. The first edition of 1000, printed in 1966, is characterized by a binding error resulting in a small, ftwo-inch folded flap at end. Ruscha mounted a motorized 35mm Nikon camera in the back of a pickup truck and drove down one side of The Boulevard and up the other, taking photographs of, well, every building on a mile and a half of the Sunset Strip. Measures approximately 5 1/4" by 7 1/4". At the top of each page is one side of the street; turn the book upside down and there's the other side! Soft cover original in white matte wrappers in the original, unrepaired silver mylar-covered slipcase. Three small glue spots (as freqently found) to inside of rear panel, and some toning/minor creasing to spine. Some rubbing and soiling to extremities, and a 3/4" separation, unrepaired,to front of slipcase, at edge. Andrew Roth, in his critical reference work THE BOOK OF 101 BOOKS: SEMINAL PHOTOGRAPHIC BOOKS OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY (pp. 182-185), writes: "...Ruscha's photographs are quite deliberately uninteresting and matter-of-fact; they have the mute quality of evidence or commercial raw material with no aspiration to art. (Ruscha has said he wants 'absolutely neutral material'...'my pictures are not that interesting...[the books] are simply a collection of facts...). '...and I let photography be a second medium, an excuse to make a book. That's what I wanted to do most of all, really, to make a book, not necessarily to take photographs.'"

Facsimile of All Religions are One.

Clairvaux, Jura, France: for The Trianon Press for The William Blake Trust, London,, 1970. Quarto. Original green full morocco, titles to spine gilt. With the original marbled slipcase. Facsimile plates thoughout achieved by collotype, some with watercolour washes applied by hand. Slight darkening to spine, otherwise a fine copy. First edition thus, publisher Arnold Fawcus's copy, copy A of 26 lettered copies reserved for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust and the Publishers, in full morocco with a set of proofs showing the progressive states of the collotype process, from a total edition of 662 copies on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake. This copy derives from the Trianon Press Archive, from the estate of Trianon publisher and founder Arnold Fawcus. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the brother of John Maynard, provides a commentary and bibliographical history. He summarises the gnomic intent of Blake's early tractate thus: "Blake identifies the Poetic Genius, that is God, with 'Divine Humanity'. Man is therefore uniform, yet with infinite variety in the individuals. All men, thus derived from a universal Poetic Genius, have but one religion, though each nation has its difference beliefs according to its needs.
