Preliminary cover design for Penny Candy, by Edward Fenton.

      c. 1970. Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 8 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches. Archivally matted and framed. Preliminary artwork for the cover design of Fenton's book, a fantasy story based on the English "Tinker Tailor" rhyme. A copy of the trade paperback edition of the book, which was published by Holt in 1970, is included in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. The key differences between this preliminary drawing and the finished work are most discernible in the five children standing in front of the candy counter: in the preliminary artwork, the children's clothing is colored, their arrangement is different, as is their height in relation to the counter. Gorey also used some ink flourishes to make the titling, which lines up vertically on either side of the central image, appear more like pieces of candy. This was not used in the published version. Gorey's watercolor work for published books seldom appears on the market. Very fine in an attractive black acrylic and resin frame.

Crow. From the Life and Songs of The Crow.

London: Faber and Faber, 1970. FIRST EDITION, with ORIGINAL ARTWORK. Slim octavo, pp. 80. Bound in publisher's black cloth, in a pictorial jacket designed by the illustrator. Original watercolour painting by Baskin to the flyleaf - a large, bold, colour depiction of the crow. Book is in fine condition, dustjacket in like; jacket is also signed by the illustrator. Born in 1922, Leonard Baskin was an accomplished sculptor, book illustrator, printmaker, graphic artist, writer and teacher. He was commissioned to produce a bronze statue of a seated figure for the Holocaust Memorial in Ann Arbor, Michigan, which was erected in 1994. Baskin lived in the U.S. for most of his life, but spent nine years in Devon at Lurley Manor, close to his friend Ted Hughes - for whom he illustrated Crow. Hughes' collection fits into the children's genre rather loosely; his poetry is certainly accessible to all ages, but explores dark and macabre themes that are, at times, fairly horrifying. A dazzling volume.

Place the chosen tautology. Opus 48. - Papierkleber mit maschinengeschriebenem Text auf starkem Karton, rückseitig mit Stempeldruck "Present".

(ca. ) 1970 - 20 x 15 cm. Fondazione Bonotto FX1364. - Eric Andersen’s pieces are so involved with the simple concept that it is sometimes impossible to discover if a piece is taking place at all. He not only takes blank structures to their logical extreme, but minimal art as well, which results in his establishing interesting new orders of boredom. For example, there is the following piece: Opus 48: which turns anonymous when the instruction is followed out It comes through the mail with a piece of cardboard that reads: place the chosen tautology So one chooses a tautology and hides it and has a secret. Only the sender and those he tells know what became of it, so it really does become both anonymous and private, making the title observation true. The public performance of a piece like this is unnecessary, however, by its nature. Still, the act is somehow boring and, through this, interesting. But we have now reached the point where performance art merges into nonperformance art, which brings us to the visual arts, among other things. (Larry Austin + Douglas Kahn, Source, Berkeley 2011).

[Photographs]: Vietnam Era Air Force Maintenance Technician Stationed in Thailand

Thailand. 1970-1971. 18 oversize original black and white photographs used as postcards measuring 5" x 7" to 5" x 8". All photos are near fine with occasional creasing and some edgewear from mailing. A collection of 18 black and white photographs taken by American Air Force Maintenance tech, H.E. Lyndes, while he was stationed in Thailand between 1970 and 1971 during the Vietnam conflict. On the verso of each he has written to his family using the prints as homemade postcards, explaining each photo in detail and inquiring about home. The photographs depict life in Thailand from basket weaving to open air markets to little children playing, each with commentary. In a letter to his daughter in October of 1970 on the back of a photo of a young girl carving wood, Lyndes writes, "in Chiang Mai some of the best wood carvers are young girls. This girl can't be more than 20 or so yet she is one of their most skilled carvers. I might add that she has been at this occupation since she was seven years old... I know it doesn't sound like much fun, but these girls take a great deal of pride in their work. They are real experts at something and they know it!" In November he wrote to his family on the back of a photo of a man making a reed bowl, "There is just so much to learn about this new operation. Relatively speaking it is a little operation but having never sat in this "seat" before and having never had much to do with this type of aircraft it does indeed take a while to get the hang of things." The postcards offer a glimpse at life abroad during the Vietnam conflict, by focusing on amateur photography he was able to capture the Thai people in their daily activities. .
