Levertov, Denise
New Directions, [ Norfolk] 1968 - Paper over boards, printed spine label. Fine in dust jacket with small closed tear at one fold mended on verso. First edition. From a total edition of one hundred press numbered copies printed by Carolyn Hammer in Emerson type on Shogun paper and signed by the author, this is copy #46 and has the variant title-page setting conforming to the bibliographer's "deluxe" edition, but the colophon is set in the form of the regular issue. The binding is the normal configuration. As the publisher asserted that there was no "deluxe edition," it would seem likely that the variations are a consequence only of stop-press alterations by the printer and were not intended as a mark of distinction between "editions." New Directions, [ Norfolk] 1968 - Paper over boards, printed spine label. Fine in dust jacket. First edition. From a total edition of one hundred press numbered copies printed by Carolyn Hammer in Emerson type on Shogun paper and signed by the author, this is one of an unknown number of copies with the variant setting of the title-page and the limitation page (with one very minor difference) which Wilson denotes as the "deluxe edition," but with endsheets and binding identical to that appearing on the ordinary copies. This is copy #14 and bears the ownership signature of poet/printer/publisher Walter Hamady. All of the copies we have previously had with these variant settings have been numbered ten or lower. As the publisher asserted that there was no "deluxe edition," it would seem likely that the variations are a consequence only of stop-press alterations by the printer and were not intended as a mark of distinction between "editions." [Kerouac] William Malliol
New York: Atheneum, 1968. First Edition. Inscribed by Jack Kerouac for his brother in law, John Sampas: "Happy Birthday to my Brother-in-law John | Jack Kerouac." With a signed letter of provenance from Jeffrey Weinberg (bookseller), dated 1983, where he states that this copy of A Sense of Dark was given to Kerouac by the publisher's agent for a possible review. John, brother to Stella, Kerouac's third wife, became the executor of the Kerouac estate after Stella and Jan's deaths in the 90s. An interesting association copy. Book presents just about Fine overall in a Very Good+ dust jacket with some wear at chipping at the spine ends and slight bend at the top of the front panel. William McIenly writing under the pseudonym of William Malliol used his writing as an outlet for his pain and PTSD, after his war experiences in Korea. "By his estimates he had killed more than 100 enemy soldiers...with a samurai sword...it was the love of a young woman and four years at Oxford University that changed William and helped him see the futility of his violence" (Zerega). A Sense of Dark graphically and honestly sets out the experiences of a soldier not so unlike Malliol himself. Such a book would have added fuel to Kerouac's own anti-war sentiments, as the Vietnam War continued into its second decade. Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. . Fine in Very Good + dust jacket. PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY
[London],: Port of London Authority, Trinity Square, E.C.3, 1968. [London],: Port of London Authority, Trinity Square, E.C.3,, 1968.. Based upon the Ordnance Survey Maps with the sanction of the Controller of HM Stationery Office. Lithographed map, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original blue covers, title in gilt. There were docks on the site of the Surrey Commercial Docks for over three centuries. The first dock was built there in 1696. a product of an astute political marriage between Elizabeth Howland and Wriothesley Russell, later 2nd Duke of Bedford. The couple were only 11 and 14 at the time, but their families combined their land and interest in the East India Company to push an act through Parliament sanctioning the construction of the Howland Wet Dock. It was particularly popular in the eighteenth century for traders from the Arctic and Eastern Europe, reflected on the map in the names of the docks and yards: Greenland Dock, Norway Dock, and Russia Dock. “Cuckold's Point”, visible at the upper left, was supposedly named after the land there was given by King John to a local miller, who had come home to find the king in a compromising position with his wife. A combination of serious damage from bombing during the Second World War and a move to container shipping forced the docks to close in 1969. The area has now been redeveloped and is known as Surrey Quays. The Port of London Authority was formed in 1909. It was prompted by a series of industrial actions by dock workers, including their demand for the ‘Docker's Tanner', a wage of 6d. an hour, in 1 … [Click Below for Full Description]

PORT OF LONDON AUTHORITY
Cook & Hammond, London, 1968. The Surrey docks Lithographed map, extensively annotated in red and pink ink, dissected and mounted on linen, folding into original blue covers, title and "Estate Officer" in silver. There were docks on the site of the Surrey Commercial Docks for over three centuries. It was particularly popular in the eighteenth century for traders from the Arctic and Eastern Europe, reflected in the names of some of the docks: Greenland Dock, Norway Dock, and Russia Dock. A combination of serious damage from bombing during the Second World War and a move to container shipping forced the docks to close in 1969. The area has now been redeveloped and is known as Surrey Quays. This copy was owned by the Estate Officer for the docks, and is extensively annotated, with red and pink lines denoting docks that had been filled in or land sold, along with the dates. The Port of London Authority was formed in 1909. It was prompted by a series of industrial actions by dock workers, including their demand for the 'Docker's Tanner', a wage of 6d. an hour, in 1889. The Port was a vital part of the British economy: refining and processing industries grew up around goods brought in to the docks and it was the centre of British shipbuilding and repair. The PLA continues to supervise and manage the Port of London, the docks, and the London stretch of the River Thames. This map was issued from the former PLA headquarters in Trinity Square.

New York: Atheneum, 1968. First edition, sixth printing, published a few months after the first of the Watson's ground-breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by James D. Watson on the title page. Near fine in a very good price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and tears. Jacket design by Jeanyee Wong. Foreword by Sir Lawrence Bragg. "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.
