Unique Photo-Album Presented in Friendship to Ambassador and Mrs. Rolf Pauls by the President of the Weizmann Institute of Science and Mrs. Meyer W. Weisgal [SIGNED]

Weizmann Institute of Science, Rehovot 1968 - Oblong Quarto. 28 plates with 39 silver gelatin photographs (5 x 7"), all tipped onto black card stock with tissue guards, all titled in white ink under the photographs. Original padded black leather album bound with leather strings and mounted, decorative stamped metal plate bolted to cover with turquoise ornamentation at corners. Black leather pocket with signed typed card sewn to inside black silk cover: "Dear Lilo and Rolf, May our bonds remain closely knit despite the distance that will now separate us," signed in two hands "Yours Meyer and Shirley." Dr. Rolf Friedemann Pauls was the first German Ambassador to Israel and served in this capacity from 1965 to 1968.The photo-album is divided into two sections, one documents the campus of the Weizmann Institute of Science, the second documents four dignitaries during visits on the occasion of the bestowal of Honorary Fellowships by the Weizmann Institute of Science. The first part containing 23 of the photographs showing various institutes on campus, e.g. the Ullmann Institute of Life Sciences, the Dannie N. Heineman Accelerator Laboratory and the Tandem van de Graaf Accelerator, the Michael Institute of Nuclear Science, the Daniel Sieff Research Institute, the Wix Auditorium and Central Library, the Wolfson Institute of Experimental Biology, the Final Resting Place of Chaim and Vera Weizmann, and a number of other institutes and residential areas. The second section contains 16 photographs divided into three parts: Konrad Adenauer's visit in 1966 with seven photographs showing the German Chancellor with Mrs. Chaim Weizmann (1), Dr. Nahum Goldmann and Meyer W. Weisgal (2), Meyer W. Weisgal (3), Adenauer at the Weizmann grave (4), Adenauer's response to his honorary Fellowship Award in the Wix Auditorium (5 and 6), and Adenauer with Meyer W. Weisgal and President of the Weizmann Institute Abba Eban (7). German Chancellor Ludwig Erhardt in 1967 with five photographs, two of them with Ambassador Pauls: the greeting by Meyer W. Weisgal (1), Weisgal reading out the Chancellor's Honorary Fellowship Citation (2), Erhardt's response in the Wix Auditorium (3), Erhardt with the head of the Dannie Heineman Laboratory and Ambassador Pauls (4), and Erhardt and Pauls at the grave of Chaim and Vera Weizmann (5). Experimental nuclear physicist Wolfgang Gentner in 1965, prior director of the Synchrocyclotron Department at CERN and the Max Planck Institute of Nuclear Physics at Heidelberg, with four photographs: with Meyer W. Weisgal and Abba Eban (1), with Gentner's response to his Honorary Fellowship (2), Gentner with the incased scroll (3) and Gentner with Ambassador Pauls (4). The Weizmann Institute is a public multidisciplinary research university in Rehovot, Israel. It was founded as the Daniel Sieff Research Institute in 1934. When Chaim Weizmann became President of the State of Israel in 1949, the institute was renamed the Weizmann Institute of Science in his honor. Ambassador Rolf Friedemann Pauls was the son of a Protestant clergyman. Pauls became a career officer in the infantry of the Wehrmacht. Due to a serious injury while the commanding officer of a company in Russia Pauls lost his left arm. In 1944 he was awarded the Knight's Cross. According to General Hans Speidel, who belonged to the inner circle of the conspirators in the raid to assassinate Hitler on July 20, 1944, Pauls was part of the plan but escaped arrest due to the silence of others. At first Pauls appeared to be an inappropriate choice for the post of Ambassador to Israel and his inauguration on August 19, 1965 was met by counter-demonstrations. Paul's tenure was generally judged as successful. From 1968-1973 Pauls was appointed to the post of Ambassador to the United States, after that to China from 1973-1976 and to NATO from 1976-1980.         77 Dream Song [with] His Toy, His Dream, His Rest [Inscribed]

Farrar, Straus / Farrar, Straus and Giroux, New York 1968 - First Printings of Berryman's Dream Songs sequence, winner of the Pulitzer Prize (77 Dream Songs) and the National Book Award and the Bollingen Prize for poetry (His Toy, His Dream, His Rest). Complete in two octavo volumes: xii,84; xxii,317,[1]pp. 77 Dream Songs: Publisher's navy blue calico cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained pink, pale yellow end papers; white illustrated dust jacket dust jacket printed in black, yellowish-brown, and deep pink, and priced $3.95. About Fine (one tip bumped), in about Fine jacket. His Toy: Publisher's navy blue calico cloth, spine lettered in gilt, top edge stained pink, pale yellow laid end papers, typographic dust jacket printed in green, yellow and purplish pink on black background, priced $6.50. Signed by Berryman on front flyleaf and inscribed: "To Joseph Hass / John Berryman [underscored]." (Haas was the Chicago Daily News reporter who interviewed Berryman on several occasions, as well as, perhaps, more famously, Bob Dylan.) About Fine (slight fading to topstain); About Fine jacket (slight toning and wrinkling to rear panel's upper edge, trivial spots lower edge). Stefanik A11.1.a and A16.1.a. In the mid-1950s, Berryman began an intensive written analysis of his dreams that "led him toward a new sort of poem, a short, jazzy lyric spoken by a persona, or sometimes by a number of voices. The new poems, which would eventually become The Dream Songs, explored deep recesses of the unconscious, Oedipal tendencies, intense feelings of loss, . . . By the early 1960s he had a suitcase of these new poems, written primarily in eight-line stanzas and spoken by a character named Henry, whom Berryman later described as a white middle-aged man who has suffered an 'irreversible loss.' . . . Berryman put a substantial group of the poems together and published them in 1964 as 77 Dream Songs. . . . Four years later, he published a larger collection of Dream Songs titled His Toy, His Dream, His Rest, bringing the total number published to 385. . . . The themes of The Dream Songs are many, including: love, death, fame, history, politics, and the individual in relation to society. The sequence includes a number of memorable elegies for fellow poets, and remarkable individual poems brooding over the death of a father. However, it is the voice and character of Henry, and the unique style of the poems, driven by Henry's humour, depression, and strange associations, which continue to fascinate readers."         Hand-painted sign commemorating the first commercial transpolar flight

1968. (DUSTIN, Frederick G.). Airport sign: “Dustin Transpolar Flight.” [Rio de Janeiro: 1968]. Original narrow metal hand-painted sign, white lettering on a red ground, measuring 5 inches by 4-1/2 feet. $1500.Unique artifact, documenting the historic first commercial round-the-world flight, tracking longitudinally across the two poles and touching down on all seven continents, including Antarctica.“Frederick G. Dustin was employed as a fuel engineer on the second Byrd Antarctic expedition (1933-35). As with many of the men involved with this expedition, Dustin went on to participate in other important explorations. In 1968 Modern Air Transport chartered a Convair 990A jet aircraft called Polar Byrd I to fly round-the-world on an exotic world tour. The flight carried 60 passengers and eight crew, and [while it] set no speed records, [it] did land on November 22, 1968 on the 10,000-foot ice runway at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (U.S. Navy) for refueling” (WingNet). Dustin was the president of the Byrd Polar Center in Boston at the time, and encouraged the Center to sponsor the flight. The CenterÂ’s letter of solicitation touted this as “the first commercial flight ever to cross both poles and touch down on all continents,” and warned that “frankly, you will endure some discomfort, and may even face some danger.” “Polar Byrd I” was captained by Hal Neff, former pilot of “Air Force One.” Among the passengers was a man named Bellafontaine, who along with 59 others, paid $10,000 to participate in this historic transpolar flight. One stop on the return itinerary was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the reception committee had erected a hand-painted welcoming sign, reading “Dustin Transpolar Flight.” Bellafontaine became the custodian of this sign.Only a few minor paint-chips. Fine condition.

        Autograph letter signed

One page of cream ""Katherine Houghton Hepburn"" letterhead, measuring 8-1/4 by 10-1/4 inches. $5000.Fine autograph letter signed from Katharine Hepburn to her friend Meta Stern, penned just two days after Robert Kennedy's assassination, anguishing over the tragedy, and mentioning Spencer Tracy.Autograph letter signed ""K–"", dated June 7th [1968], no place but while filming ""Madwoman of Chaillot"" in France, on ""Katharine Houghton Hepburn"" personal stationery. The letter is written to ""Meta,"" her friend Meta Stern, a script supervisor who worked with Hepburn while making ""Mary of Scotland"" in 1936. The letter reads in full: ""Dear Meta – No mail since May 17th. What a ghastly incredible mess – one's brain trembles at enormity of it – you & Sam must have been torn apart – such a ghastly waste – so full of hope & vision – one feels that all the catering to the wayward & the slothful & the squeaking wheels in our present philosophy is showing itself a sad mistake. We are working again – will go to Paris for a few days Thurs Fri Sat Sun – then back here & finish God willing. Mrs. T. (Spencer Tracy's wife) turned down me in the T.V. said she'd like to do it but without me narrating – just in it briefly as his costar – writing soon – K – Love to Sam & Murph."" Although Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were well known as both a professional and romantic couple, Tracy never divorced his wife because of their Catholic faith; after his death in 1967 (a year before this letter), Hepburn famously was not present at his funeral.         The Vernal Equinox is Your Equinox. .

17 1/2 x 23", offset printed in two colors. Large format color poster for a celebration of the Vernal Equinox in Golden Gate Park on March 20, 1968. The poster bears the legend Free City, and is likely the work of the Free City Collective, the name the Diggers assumed when they ceased calling themselves The Diggers the year prior. Mysteriously, we can find almost no references to this event, occuring just 5 days after the My Lai Massacre and on the same day as the Yippie Be-In in Grand Central Station on the other side of the United States. McKenna & Hollander note that the Free City Collective held a conference in late March to explore the concept of a "Free City", but we're unsure whether or not this event had any connection to that. The Free City Collective would disband after their Summer Solstice celebration in June of 1968. Some light creasing, a few short closed marginal tears and some faint staining, but otherwise a bright example. Scarce.

Seven Talismans: 7 Gravures En Coul. Sur Zinc.

[S.l.]:: Chez l'artiste, , 1968. . Limited edition of 50. Loose prints in a paper folder and laid into a stiff backed, string tied folder. . Fine/Fine. A suite of seven intaglio prints signed and dated by the artist in a folder/title page printed on Arches Velin paper. Images are approx. 3 x 4 inches on paper measuring approx. 10 x 12 inches. From the limitation page: "Printed in Paris in the autumn of 1968 by Leacouriere Frelaut, under the artist's supervision from his original intaglio-colograph zinc plates. The edition consists of 50 suites of seven prints numbered from 1/50 to 50/50, printed on Velin Arches paper." It goes on to mention an additional edition of 12 suites. This copy is signed by the artist below this declaration and numbered 29/50 in his hand. Each print is also signed and numbered by the artist just under each image. Finally, the Title folder is additionally inscribed: "For Sylvan Cole, who inspired Bernard to do this suite. Love, Judith. New York 4.xii.2001." Sylvan Cole was an art dealer in New York city during the era around WWII who is credited with virtually single handedly creating a market for prints at a time when they were considered not worthy of serious consideration. A great association. Contained in a string-tied folder of rust colored cloth over boards. Condition of the prints and folder containing them is Fine. Condition of the cloth outer folder is Very Good+ with a few faint scuffs and a sticker ghost on the upper right corner. Bernard Childs' paintings and prints have exhibited widely and reside in many institutional collections including the New York Public Library, the Fogg Art museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and numerous others.
