        2001: A Space Odyssey

New American Library - Arthur C. Clarke (1968) ‘2001: A Space Odyssey’, signed US first edition, first printing published by New American Library. This is Arthur’s copy, from his personal library. The half title page bears a stamp with his address in Sri Lanka, as well as a relief stamp stating ‘From the Library of Sir Arthur C. Clarke’ with a monolith as well as an Arthur C Clarke Foundation relief stamp. Signed without further inscription to the title page. The book comes with additional ephemera: Arthur’s personal business card; a book plate; photographs as well as a hand signed letter. Condition: very good with a slight lean, mild page block edge toning, and slight soiling to the board edges. The dust jacket is very good, not price clipped and has some creasing, wrinkling and short tears. Clearly Arthur was not too concerned about condition of his own book, but the provenance more than compensates for this. A landmark book of science fiction written in conjunction with Stanley Kubrick as a screenplay who filmed this as one of the best science fiction movies of all time. Colour frontis of H R H Shaikh Al Sabah. 8vo. 627pp. Frontispiece. 46 illus. on plates, 1 in rear pocket. 15 text-illus. 20 tables & maps, 6 in rear pocket.Dickson served as British Political Agent in Bahrain from 1919-1920.[4] He also served in Persia (present-day Iran). In 1929 he was appointed British Political Agent to Kuwait, and served in this role until 1936. He briefly held this role again in 1941.[5] Some of his reports have been published in Political Diaries of the Arab World: Persian Gulf 1904-1965. The publishers' description of this volume reads in part: "Perhaps the most idiosyncratic [contributor to the volume] was Lt. Col. H. R. P. Dickson who wrote voluminously in the 1920s and 1930s on his trips into the Saudi hinterland, his meetings with rulers and all the machinations and gossip that sometimes go into political intelligence-gathering."[6] After retiring from his political career he worked for the Kuwait Oil Company,[3] for which company he had been the first Chief Local Representative in Kuwait.[7] Dickson had a detailed knowledge of bedouin life and customs, and produced two books which are considered valuable chronicles of a now-threatened way of life. These books, The Arab of the Desert: A Glimpse into Badawin Life in Kuwait and Sa'udi Arabia, first published in 1949, and Kuwait and her Neighbours, first published in 1956, have been described as 'monumental',[8] and are now sought-after collector's items. Dickson had a son Saud (who died in May 2005), and a daughter (died in May 20, 2015 after a short illness) Zahra Freeth (née Dickson), who is also an author on Middle Eastern topics and who co-edited and abridged the third edition of The Arab of the Desert.

Top edge of text block foxed, some tanning to endpapers, else a fine. copy in near fine dust jacket with touch of rubbing at edges,. primarily to corners and spine ends and along folds. (#125932). First edition. A collection of eight novella-length ghost stories -- or "strange stories," to use the author's preferred term -- "concentrating on ambiguity, unease and stark terror ... Aickman's was not a malign universe, or even a retributive tragic order that automatically punished transgressions and oversights. His watercolors and tempera paintings capture the essence of the two regions, while conveying a sense of loneliness and nostalgia.       New York: Bread + Puppet Theater, 1968. Original wraps. Very Good +. Very scarce offshoot of New York's Bread + Puppet Theater, this issue (#3) of Bread and Puppet News Paper sets its sites on The New York Times and selects a random day (Thursday January 25th, 1968) to focus on. Here are several of the stories from The Times Bread + Puppet reprints in condensed form -- and with accompanying childlike illustrations and a wicked sense of irony: Fragments of at least one Hydrogen Bomb found at the crash site of a B-52 Bomber off Greenland; a NY Commission recommending legislation to give police the power to use deadly force in apprehending suspects; a wedding announcement; ads for American Express and Reader's Digest; Lady Bird Johnson being heckled walking past a group of young protesters, etc. Clean and well-preserved in its printed stapled wrappers, with just a bit of wear along the edges. 64mo, 32 pgs., illustrated thruout in crude lline drawings. A highly-effective --even ingenious-- piece of late 60s political protest,

Prose: On Poetry in the Wholesale Education and Cultural System [One of 300 Copies]

(Gunrunner Press), (Milwaukee) 1968 - Poetry by the legendary figure of the Cleveland underground and counterculture, author of The North American Book of the Dead, among others. Levy was a writer and, with bookseller Jim Lowell of the Asphodel Bookshop, a publisher and distributor of his own and others' writings. An outspoken anti-establishment writer, he committed suicide at the age of 26. This is the uncommon first edition of this title, one of 300 copies printed, although it appears scarcer than that: most of Levy's books were printed in Cleveland, and this one seems to have not survived in the quantities that some of the others, even with smaller limitations, did. It was later reprinted in 1974 and again in 1988 and in a bilingual French-English edition in 2011, with all of the later editions being more readily available than this first edition. Mild edge sunning, else fine in stapled wrappers. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

ukanhavyrfuckincitibak [wrapper title] D. A. LEVY: A TRIBUTE TO THE MAN AN ANTHOLOGY OF HIS POETRY

Cleveland: Ghost Press, 1968. First edition. Thick 4to., stab-stapled and tape bound into wraps (cover illustrated with a photograph of levy by rjs). Mimeographed, with six silkscreens by rjs tipped on. One of 1000 copies. With a postcard ALS concerning levy's suicide laid in. A mammoth collection of levy's work, here collected and edited by rjs and published to raise money for levy's legal defense fund during his ongoing battle with the censors; levy would commit suicide later in the year of publication. This copy significant for the inclusion of a mimeographed postcard laid in, illustrated with a drawing of three pigs entitled "We Like It Here!" signed "in plate" by Ferguson - likely Steve Ferguson. The verso contains a brief handwritten note addressed to "Steve" which states "d. a. shot himself with a 22 caliber rifle thru the forehead. Suicide. Continuation later." the note is signed "rj", likely by rjs. rjs was the editor of this fundraiser for levy, and, along with Steve Ferguson, discovered levy's body after his suicide. We don't know who the "Steve" of the inscription is, but this copy came to light in Canada.

        The Double Helix

New York: Atheneum,, 1968. A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA. Octavo. Original blue cloth, titles to spine gilt, red endpapers, top edge yellow. With the dust jacket. An excellent copy in the price-clipped jacket, spine panel just slightly faded, a little rubbing to extremities, short closed tear to head of front panel. The Double Helix is one of the most important first-hand accounts of the practice of science during the 20th century, written "with a Pepys-like frankness" and chronicling not only the wonder and beauty of a major breakthrough, but also the politics and turf wars of researchers battling for scientific glory.
