        Apocalypsis cum Figuris

Warsaw: 1968-1972. Original poster for the play from the collection of Alma Law. 95.5 x 54.5 cm Plakat spektaklu "Apocalypsis cum figuris", 1968. Projekt: Waldemar Krygier | Jerzy Grotowski. This legendary performance at the Laboratorium Theatre directed by Jerzy Grotowski was the artist's last work and is considered to be his most radical. The show took four years to prepare, and premiered in 1969, causing political and moral scandal. The director used unconventional methods of working with actors, and strove to destroy the illusion of a theatre performance, replacing convention with authentic experience. However, this is not the only reason why the legend of Jerzy Grotowski as an artist anathematised by the Church has remained alive for over a quarter of a century.

The Demand and Supply of Public Goods.

Rand McNally, Chicago 1968 - First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author in the year of publication (with a two page inscription) on the front free endpaper and onto the verso, "Betty, This will have to substitute for a more formal dedication to you, which, as I said, should have been included here. This is because this book, more than any other stuff of mine, reflects the outcome of the efforts of so many around the center and, all of whom are and remain in a real sense (over) thanks for all that you have done through those "good" years, which like all good things must pass along, hopefully, to be replaced by others that are different, and also exciting. With my compliments and my love Jim Buchanan." The recipient, Betty H. Tillman, was his assistant for 46 years and was the second person Buchanan phoned on October 16, 1986 (after his wife, Ann) when he learned he had been awarded the Nobel Prize in Economics (see Buchanan, 'Notes on Nobelity,' in Better than Plowing: And Other Personal Essays, University of Chicago Press 1992). In near fine condition, with some underlining from the recipient. This work by David Reisman is a survey of the political economy of James Buchanan seeking to explain his theories in detail and evaluate them in depth, covering topics such as the constitution and its failure, democracy, operational rules for the constitution and economics.         "The Gift" -- an episode of the TV show 'Steve Canyon'

Universal City, CA: Pegasus Productions Co., Inc. 26 September 1968. 4to. 33 pp. Shooting script, clean and unmarked. Original printed front wrapper [no rear wrapper] closed with two contemporary brass clasps. SIDNEY CARROLL'S COPY, signed by him on the front wrapper and the first text leaf, and annotated in ink "Complete / Revised... 10/23/58." The series was written by Ray Bradbury and Sidney Carroll and directed by Don Taylor, which aired originally on Saturday December 20th 1958 at 9pm on NBC. It was never repeated in the United States. When ABC aired summer reruns of Steve Canyon in 1960, for some reason this one (and 13 others) never got shown. Considered a lost series for nearly 50 years, 'Steve Canyon' was made with the cooperation of the US Air Force and based on Milton Caniff's famous newspaper adventure comic strip of the same name that ran nonstop from 1947 to 1988. The Milton Caniff Estate released all 34 episodes on DVD in 2008-2013. A scarce survival from the studio, owned by famed scriptwriter Sidney Carroll. Front wrapper with upper corner torn and repaired with tape.

        The Green House.

Harper & Row, New York 1968 - First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original green cloth. Fine in a very near fine dust jacket that shows just a touch of wear to the crown. Signed by the author on the title page. A very sharp copy. The Green House draws on Vargas Llosa's experiences growing up near a brothel in the northwestern Peruvian town of Piura. The novel, which juggles multiple plots, locations, shifting points of view, and more than 30 characters, reflects Peruvian society's vast inequalities. Critics considered it a classic "total" novel--a fusion of style, subject, and form that convinces readers that an illusory reality may be even "truer" than reality. "Mario Vargas Llosa's message seems to be that man, like the jungle, has a mysterious energy which cannot in the end be explained or subdued. His characters may be saints, villains, victims, or nothing in particular, but they break out of the pages of this magnificent novel with the stubborn uncontainability of life itself" (V.S. Pritchett, The New Statesman). [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

So Many Rooms Has A House But One Roof.

Mexico City: , 1968. 16 pp. carbon typescript, stapled. 3 leaves extracted from The Minnesota Review, stapled. Six typed letters (one of which two leaves). Housed in two grey card folders. Good condition. Pre-publication carbon-copy typescript of this important American feminist and revolutionary's early poetry collection. Randall's author's note, included here, states: "So many rooms has a house but one roof came out of a death and a rebirth in revolutionary cuba, january – february, 1967. i was there to participate in the 'encuentro con ruban dario', along with some eighty other poets from all over the world . . . now the 12 sections are a year old, things have happened, but the change is in one direction only. el che is dead, and with him fear died. this, then, is a piece of the whole – eight years from the triumph of the revolution that produced – and is producing – the first free territory of america. margaret randall, mexico city – 12.67". There is also a notice observing "four sections of this manuscript were first published by Poetry Magazine (Chicago) in their february, 1968 issue. a limited, deluxe edition of the entire series will be brought out by c. w. truesdale's press in nyack, new york, and a popular edition will be done by Guerrilla Press in new york city". From the collection of British writer Arnold Wesker (1936–2016), to whom it was evidently sent. The typescript is accompanied by Randall's poem "The Black, Market" (five pages extracted from The Minnesota Review and stapled) inscribed, "for Arnold Wesker w/ all best, Margaret 6.68", and six piece of typewritten correspondence between the two writers, four typed letters signed from Randall to Wesker, and two copies of his replies. The correspondence, between Mexico and London, dates May–October 1968, and reveals Wesker's financial support for the poet struggling at the time with both political oppression and pregnancy. This period coincided with the Mexico Olympics, of which Randall remarks in one of the letters, "olympics & 'splendor' over now, and we wait for the inevitable strengthening of repression now the tourists have all gone home". One of the letters advertises the work of, and begs for funding to help, the revolutionary Mexican magazine Randall co-founded, El Corno Emplumado.

        Soma, divine mushroom of immortality.

      - The Hague, Mouton, 1968. 4to (29.8 x 20.5 cm). xiii., 381, [i] pp., two full colour plates (illustrations), 17 tipped-in full colour photographic plates (I-XV, XXII; plate VIII with two photos tipped in, the second not counted), and six black and white photos (XVI-XX, and one not numbered), 10 numbered text figures, including one unnumbered text figure - possibly number 8 - tinted with red, three maps (labelled A, B, C), one folded chart. Original blue half calf with gilt border and gilt title on the spine. Fore edge uncut.l True first, being number 32 of the limited edition, described in the book as follows: "Of this book 680 copies have been made, designed by Giovanni Mardersteig and set in Dante type, of which two are designed A & B and the others are numbered from 1 to 678. The text and the illustrations have been printed by the Stamperia Valdonegga in Verona, except for the two plates in pochoir, which were executed in Paris by Daniel Jacomet et Cie. The paper was made by hand by Fratelli Magnani, Pescia, and the printing was finished in October 1968". This edition was published in the Hague, and is not a New York, NY Harcourt Brace edition, which is the simpler trade edition published after 1969. Oddly, there are New York copies on the market that supposedly belong to the same limited edition, but in their internet descriptions the number of illustrations (lower in the New York trade edition) is "wisely" not mentioned. This is Ethno-Mycological Studies I (sometimes erroneously listed as "Ethno-Mythological Studies"). In this work the writer, ethnomycologist and banker Robert Gordon Wasson (1898-1986), provides ample evidence for the important role that hallucinogenic mushrooms - in particular the ubiquitous mushroom Amanita muscaria (fly agaric) - play in various ancient and modern cultures. Slipcase wanting, otherwise a fine, unmarked, spotless copy. Volbracht, 2230. [Attributes: Hard Cover]
