        [Photographs]: Large Art Photographs

[New Jersey. circa 1970s]-1980s. A collection of more than 130 gelatin silver photographs taken by David Booker during the 1970s and 1980s. The mostly large format images measure from 5" x 7" to 19" x 23", but with most approximately 11" x 14". Two of the images are matted, one is mounted on cardboard, and with about a half dozen duplicates. Overall near fine with curling at the edges; a scattered few have minor abrasion from adhering to another print or on the back from being previously mounted. The vast majority of the artfully captured images feature African-American woman in some state of undress, possibly for magazine layouts or as glamour shots. There are more than a dozen different models, many captured over a series of photos that range in content and size. None of the images are captioned or stamped on the back, but a note on the box in which they are housed does lists the names of nine women which presumably correspond with some of the images. Additional photos in the collection include portraits, head shots, commercial images (wine, fashion, and job training), and print images of DJ Frankie Crocker and Booker T. Washington's daughter, Portia.Little could be found about Booker aside from a 1968 photo credit for the book, A Mission for Justice: The History of the First African-American Church in Newark, New Jersey by Mary Ward, which corresponds geographically to their purchase in Northern New Jersey. An unusual collection of large format African-American images. .

Poster]: Michael McClure's The Beard. Directed by Robert Gist. Warner Playhouse

Warner Playhouse, [Los Angeles] 1968 - Poster. Photographically illustrated on thin card stock printed in red, black, and gray. Approximately 8.5" x 14.5". A bit skinned on the verso where tape has been removed, else very near fine. Poster for the 1968 Los Angeles premiere of the play, where it had migrated after the productions had been shut down in both New York and San Francisco for the simulated oral sex scene in the play. The cast of the L.A. production were arrested 14 nights in a row. In a letter to Stan Brakhage in September 1968, McClure complained, "I'll have to return to L.A. for the opening of the trial of Beard, which starts September 16." The poster was designed by Wallace Berman, publisher of *Semina* and considered by some as the "Father of Assemblage Art," who also provided the photograph of his bare-breasted wife Shirley seen holding a worn pair of boots which graces the poster. Jim Morrison of The Doors attended the L.A. performance and apparently expressed interest in playing the lead in a film version, but alas that contribution to film history went unfulfilled.

Both the issues of 100 de luxe copies and of six copies reserved for the artist contain an original gouache painting by Mee mounted as a frontispiece. Mee's early expeditions into the Amazon region culminated in this, the first major publication of her Brazilian flower paintings and a botanical book of the greatest importance. Not only are the images the result of painstaking observation and meticulous attention to detail, the descriptions -- supplemented by notes from Mee's own travel diaries -- were written by the noted Brazilian, American, and British taxonomists Luiz Emygdio de Mello, Bassett Maguire, Andrà Robyns, Richard S. Cowan, Lyman B. Smith, John J. Wurdack, B.L. Burtt, David R. Hunt, Guido F.J. Pabst, and Raulino Reitz. The text, which is prefaced by an introduction by Mee's friend Roberto Burle Marx (1909-1994), the famed Brazilian artist and landscape gardener, has an authoritative rigour that supports the magnificent illustrations. As George Taylor (the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew) remarked in his preface, 'special scientific interest and importance attaches to certain of the plates, which portray species new to science, or are illustrated for the first time, and the consummate quality of all the paintings is enhanced by botanical accuracy in the observation of detail [.] Mee's work is of an unusually high order of excellence, and in the best tradition of flower painting'. The three new species described and illustrated are the Catasetum meeae (no. 16, 'collected by Margaret Mee in the State of Amazonas, at the Içana River [in December 1964], and brought into cultivation at São Paolo where it flowered in July 1965', and named for Mee by Pabst); the Spathiphyllum grazielae (no. 31, collected in Paranapiacaba, São Paolo, in February 1967); the Neoregelia margaretae (no. 25, collected by Mee by the Rio Içana in January 1965 and named for her by Smith). Ruth Stiff and Simon Mayo state that, 'during her journeys, Margaret Mee collected four of the five species of Neoregalia known from Amazonian Brazil, and is credited with first discovering three of them herself -- N. margaretae, N. leviana, and N. meeana. Margaret's significant contribution to the knowledge of this genus helped establish her reputation as both a scientist and a botanical explorer. As Neoregalia margaretae has not yet been recollected, it is known only from Margaret's collections' (M. Mee Margaret Mee's Amazon (Woodbridge and Kew: 2004), p. 302). Flowers of the Brazilian Forests was conceived when Mee's work attracted the attention of Sir George Taylor, the Director of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, after she had won the Royal Horticultural Society's Grenfell Medal in 1960.         Les Enfants Trouvés de Magritte

Paris: A.C Mazo et Cie, 1968. EXTREMELY RARE LIMITED EDITION OF Surrealist master RENÉ MAGRITTE'S Les Enfants Trouvés, number 89 of only 350 issues printed on Velin d'Arches. COMPLETE WITH TWELVE BREATHTAKING LITHOGRAPHS. "The art of René Magritte has had an influence far exceeding the confines of the art world. Imagery adapted from his paintings has been widely disseminated for more than half a century through advertising, cartoons, film, book jackets, and popular music... His work has continued to appeal to modern audiences hungry for the puzzling conjunctions of the everyday and the fantastic... The inscrutable nature of Magritte's work--coded, self-referential, and incongruous--has [moreover] intrigued several generations of artists," (Stephanie Barron). The first four illustrations (numbered recto) are magnificently unique, conceived by Magritte specifically for this production. While certainly distinctive, these images--as well as the final eight--represent a summary of his favorite ideas and symbols, many taken from recent pictures: the clouds, female torsos, and birds, to name a few.Eight following illustrations were originally created by Magritte for his mural "The Enchanted Domain". An awing 360-degree eight-panel mural, the masterpiece was painted to fulfill a commission by Gustave J. Nellens, owner of the Casino Communal at Knokke-Le-Zoute in Belgium. A massive undertaking for a famously reclusive artist, Magritte commented:"When asked to devise a series of pictures for the walls of a Casino gaming room, I did not think along the lines expected of me... My intention is to offer an artistic spectacle of some significance, and convey a hitherto unknown feeling, a feeling in keeping with the attitude appropriate to a person living in the universe," (Elle, 1953).Nellens himself amassed quite a significant amount of Magritte art; his collection of paintings and lithographs is, even today, unparalleled.Accompanying poem (in French) by Louis Scutenaire, a poet, close confidant of Magritte, and central figure of the Belgian Surrealist movement.  A.C Mazo et Cie: Paris, 1968. Complete set of twelve color lithographs on Velin d'Arches, each initialed in pencil by the printer Fernand Mourlot, signed on the stone "Magritte" lower right. Oversize folio (46x62 cm). Encased in original illustrated cloth-covered folding box; loose (as issued). Numbered 89/350 on the colophon. COMPLETE PORTFOLIO AND IN FINE CONDITION: INCREDIBLY RARE. Fine.
