The Double Helix: A Personal Account of the Discovery of the Structure of DNA.

New York: Atheneum, 1968. First edition of the author's ground breaking work regarding the discovery of DNA for which the author, Francis Crick and Maurice Wilkins were awarded the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1962. Signed by both James Watson and Francis Crick on the title page. Octavo, original blue cloth. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Exceptionally rare signed by both Watson and Crick. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. "Science seldom proceeds in the straightforward logical manner imagined by outsiders," writes James Watson in The Double Helix, his account of his codiscovery (along with Francis Crick) of the structure of DNA. Watson and Crick won Nobel Prizes for their work, and their names are memorized by biology students around the world. But as in all of history, the real story behind the deceptively simple outcome was messy, intense, and sometimes truly hilarious. To preserve the "real" story for the world, James Watson attempted to record his first impressions as soon after the events of 1951-1953 as possible, with all their unpleasant realities and "spirit of adventure" intact.

Aldona Gustas: Notizen. Konrad Schüler: Radierungen [SIGNED]

Berlin: Edition der Galerie am Abend, 1968. Limited edition. Hardcover. vg. Numbered and signed by Aldona Gustas and Konrad Schüler on colophon. 15/15. Octavo. 20 leaves, handmade paper. Collection of nine etchings by Konrad Schüler paired with poetry by Aldona Gustas, bound in contemporary leather with intricate Schüler motif blind-stamped to cover. "In a period of German literature that has emphasized social relevance and ideological commitment Aldona Gustas has maintained a very personal, lyrical voice. Karl Krolow, prominent critic and fellow poet, has referred to her as and "Einzelgänger" - a "lone wolf" on the German literary scene" Litanus, Lithuanian Literary Magazine, 1981). Aldona Gustas, a Lithuanian born poet, read at the "Galerie am Abend" in 1964 and her title "Notizen" was one of eight volumes published in the Vera Ziegler Edition Galerie am Abend from 1965-970. Konrad Schüler exhibited a number of times at the Galerie and his artwork was paired with poets in four of Ziegler's publications. The "Galerie am Abend" (Evening Gallery) was founded by Vera Ziegler. Exhibitions, readings and meetings were held in Ziegler's apartment in Berlin-Friedenau in the evenings and on weekends. Between 1960-1969 it was the "in-place" to meet for artists in Berlin. In the nine years of its existence artists and poets as, Ekkehard Thieme, Christa Reining, Günter Bruno Fuchs, F. C. Delius and H. C. Artmann were part of the gallery's program. Text in German. Some discoloration and minor staining to binding. Spine sunned. Minor staining to margins of one page not affecting image.         PLEASE PLANT THIS BOOK

San Francisco / Santa Barbara: [White Rabbit Press], 1968. First Edition. Wraps. Very good. Pictorial folder, containing eight seed packets, each printed with a different poem. All packets sealed. Some mild wear to a few of the envelopes. But generally near fine. Folder has some mild toning, soil, and edgewear: very good. One of 6000 unnumbered copies. Cover photographs by Bill Brach; typography by J.S. Brooke; printed by Graham Mackintosh. One of the quintessential publications of the counterculture. Brautigan's letterpressed poems on various seed packets (Carrots, Lettuce, Calendula, Parsley, Shasta Daisy, California Native Flowers, Sweet Alyssum, Royal Carpet, and Squash) were distributed for free in hippie strongholds throughout California, and PLEASE PLANT embodies the spirit of the age perhaps better than any other book of the time, a seemless melding of the communal, political, environmental, and literary. According to the Mackintosh, "...the essential things was that the seeds were real — that is, if you planted Shasta daisies, you got back Shasta daisies and not carrots — and one had only to plant his book" (quoted in Johnston, BIBLIOGRAPHY OF THE WHITE RABBIT PRESS, p. 89). While there are apocryphal claims of a ninth "Marijuana" packet, to our knowledge this has never been seen or documented. "Many copies were doubtless put to the use intended by the author, though perhaps not as many as rare book dealers would have us believe" (ibid 56). [Johnston A43].

        [Photographs]: Large Art Photographs

[New Jersey. circa 1970s]-1980s. A collection of more than 130 gelatin silver photographs taken by David Booker during the 1970s and 1980s. The mostly large format images measure from 5" x 7" to 19" x 23", but with most approximately 11" x 14". Two of the images are matted, one is mounted on cardboard, and with about a half dozen duplicates. Overall near fine with curling at the edges; a scattered few have minor abrasion from adhering to another print or on the back from being previously mounted. The vast majority of the artfully captured images feature African-American woman in some state of undress, possibly for magazine layouts or as glamour shots. There are more than a dozen different models, many captured over a series of photos that range in content and size. None of the images are captioned or stamped on the back, but a note on the box in which they are housed does lists the names of nine women which presumably correspond with some of the images. Additional photos in the collection include portraits, head shots, commercial images (wine, fashion, and job training), and print images of DJ Frankie Crocker and Booker T. Washington's daughter, Portia.Little could be found about Booker aside from a 1968 photo credit for the book, A Mission for Justice: The History of the First African-American Church in Newark, New Jersey by Mary Ward, which corresponds geographically to their purchase in Northern New Jersey. An unusual collection of large format African-American images. .

Typed statement signed, published in The New York Times Book Review, Volume 73

[c. 1968]. One page quarto (297 x 210 mm). Closed tear at foot and head (partly through Vidal's holograph note), nick at top right corner, lightly creased where folded, general light creasing; minor emendations in another hand. In excellent condition. Brief typed statement that captures Vidal's insouciant tone and encapsulates his "trademark brand of prodigious pessimism delivered with high wit" (Jonathan Raban in The New York Review of Books, discussing Vidal's Selected Essays, 2008). Inscribed by Vidal at the head: "Hope this will be useful - Gore Vidal", this 17-line summary of Vidal's "world view" was a response to a request from The New York Times for comments from public figures. In full: "It is now plain that none of the world's existing political and economic systems is able to deal with any of the great problems we face today. From over-population to the mindless destruction of natural resource our society has neither the means nor the will to take action. And so [crossed through], brooding in Rome, I am more and more convinced that some sort of absolute Authority must be created to insure human survival. I am a curiously unpolemical novelist, considering my political interests. Yet even a comic fantasy like 'Myra Breckenridge' tends to reflect the common predicament. Meanwhile [crossed through and changed to:] And so, while pondering whether or not to plunge directly into political action this fall, I am making a film of 'Myra', as well as assembling a new volume of essays to be called 'Reflections upon a Sinking Ship,' written - needless to say - in the hope that with bold planning, the ship may yet proceed upon its way, adequately victualled and not over-manned". Vidal first visited Rome in 1939 and "George Armstrong, a journalist and close friend of Gore's from his decades in Italy, later recalled: 'Rome lay at the center of Gore's literary imagination. He read all the major books about the republic and empire'" (cited in Jay Parini, Every Time a Friend Succeeds Something Inside Me Dies: The Life of Gore Vidal). "And so, brooding in Rome, I am more and more convinced that some sort of absolute Authority must be created to ensure human survival" may be a wish for the return of a Pax Romana or a knowingly provocative tongue-in-cheek reference to Mussolini. His satirical novel Myra Breckenridge (1969), described by Anthony Burgess as a "scurrilous satire" (99 Novels p. 129), offended many of the era's more conservative critics because of its perceived pornographic content and eponymous transgender hero(ine). It was made into a film of the same name (1970) starring Raquel Welch; Vidal disowned the film, describing it as "an awful joke", but described "Myra" as his favourite among his books. Reflections Upon a Sinking Ship (1969) – also mentioned here - was a collection of reviews of works by such contemporaries as Susan Sontag and J. K. Galbraith and essays on subjects from pornography to the Kennedys.

Offprint]: The Origin of the Yellow Submarine

1968 - One page photocopied from a scholarly journal. Two vertical creases else about fine. A work of facetious scholarship delineating the origins of the yellow submarine "myth," created by Erich Segal, who wrote the screenplay for the film. In addition to writing novels such as *Love Story*, Segal was a professor of Greek and Latin literature at Harvard University and other universities. Inscribed by Erich Segal in red felt tip pen: "Regards -- T. Quid." Apparently this was published in 1968 as an appendix to the novelization of the film. We have only seen one other example of this literary hoax, similarly copied, folded, and inscribed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Photo Album]: Family of an African-American Man working in Photography at a Department Store. Mostly 1960-1968

New York City and Newark, other locations 1968 - One oblong folio photo album, measuring 14" x 12.5", plus additional unbound album leaves. Album is screw bound leather with stiff leaves with adhesive backing and mylar over-leaves. The loose leaves are identical to those in the album, but unbound. One screw lacking from the binding, a few leaves lack the mylar over-leaves, the images are firmly mounted on the adhesive leaves and are mostly bright and near fine. Together a total of 439 images mostly chromogenic or Polaroid snapshots, with a modest number of earlier gelatin silver black and white prints. Most are some variant of 3.5" x 3.5". Only a few have captions. A number have ink or stamped dates ranging from 1951-1968, but most are probably from 1960-1968. Most images are from New York City or Newark, New Jersey, and outlying suburban locations. Many of the loose album leaves have old price stickers from the S. Klein department store, probably in Newark. The images appeared to be either taken by or of an African-American man who worked either as a photographer or in the photography section of a department store (possibly Klein's or McCrory's) and of his wife. Many of the images are of the handsome young man with pencil thin mustache dressed in a suit, handling various types of camera equipment or posed either singly or with co-workers in the photography department. There is also an image of a blonde woman wearing a sash with the words "The Polaroaid Camera Girl" on it.There are many images of the woman we believe to be his wife, posed in fashionable clothes. The earliest image of the woman is dated in 1951 and labeled "Me," and there are a few images of her cheerleading at a high school football game. The earliest images of the young man are of him graduating, probably from high school in 1955, another image is of him in an Army uniform. Most of the rest of the images are from the 1960s and show the young couple fashionably dressed, he in neat suits or tuxedos and she in various ball gowns or party dresses. They are shown dancing in night clubs, at Easter or Halloween parades, with new sports cars, or at the beach in Atlantic City, often in studied poses.Despite their sophisticated style, the couple were not immune to the fads or excesses of the 1960s. In a few images the man is seen in a black leather motorcycle jacket and black beret a la the Black Panthers; in a puffy shirt with beret and neckerchief; in another he is seen with bellbottoms, psychedelic headband and vest, while brandishing a bow and arrow in the outdoors. The young woman occasionally exhibits a fondness for cat's eye glasses. While the images are not strictly chronological, the later portions of the album young children, presumably belonging to the couple, are in evidence.A interesting window into the fashionable life of an African-American coupe during the heyday of the 1960s.

An unusual collection of large format African-American images. .
