DALI (Boldly signed with a drawing of an Angel). Edited and arranged by Max Gérard. Translated by Eleanor R. Morse.

Harry N. Abrams, New York 1968 - Handsomely bound in heavy, roughly textured cloth printed with Dali's art work on the front and rear boards. Clean and tight throughout, and illustrated with a multitude of color plates, numerous black and white ones, several folding plates and leaves as well. There are 271 illustrations, including 80 plates in full color and 23 in toned gravure. With two light creases at the bottom right-hand corner of the title page. In the original, heavy gilded colorful dust jacket with the striking painting "The Persistence of Memory" by Dali on the front panel. "The book is sumptuously covered with gold foil, usually reserved for candy boxes; that is why you will soon be tasing sweets in the form of soft watches; thus it is that the imagintion of our ingenious friend satisfied with one stroke two passions dear to his heart: art and gastronony." The jacket is complete with some light edge rubbing, especially along the top and bottom edges of the rear panel and at the corners. A lovely copy with a charming drawing of a petite angel holding a flower. Signing this copy at the Rive Gauche restarant in Georgetown, near Washington, D.C. the artist apparently used a blot of mustard to color in the body of the winged angel who is holding a delicate flower. The book is inscribed boldly in black ink to: HERB and signed with élan by Dali, with the multi-circled ball over the i and dated 1978, with the drawing of the angel holding a flower on the verso of the front endpaper. Included is a letter of provenance with this signed presentation copy explaining that Dali was a patron of the Rive Gauche restaurant in Georgetown, and that the manager Jeannine Fletcher asked him to inscribe this book to her husband Herb.         Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness

New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Peter Parnall. 269pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Brown cloth. Illustrated. Fine/Near fine. Subtle rubbing to corners of jacket. Small bookstore sticker at head of front flap. Blind ownership embossment in lower right corner of title page. & & Signed holographic letter from Abbey laid in. Eight lines of text in blue ink and signed Ed A. Mailing envelope also present. The author's fourth book and his first work of nonfiction. This collection of meditations by then park ranger Abbey in what was Arches National Monument of the 1950s was quietly published in the raucous sixties in a first edition of 5,000 copies, and has now gone on to sell almost two million copies taking its rightful place alongside Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, as an environmental and wilderness classic. The late author's reflections transcend the mere genre of the environmental essay. The individual pieces part of a fully realized whole that defined a whole new style of environmental and wilderness writing, inspiring new generations of writers (Barry Lopez and Terry Tempest Williams come to mind) while becoming the author's best known and best loved work in the process, and yes, becoming what Abbey always feared, "a classic".

Typed Letter Signed to Leon Uris and 12-page outline for the film "Topaz

Universal City, 1968. unbound. Historically important typed letter signed, 2 pages, 4to, 11 x 8.5 inches, on "Alfred J. Hitchcock Productions, Inc." letterhead. Universal City, June 20, 1968. Signed with his iconic self-caricature drawing to acclaimed author and screenwriter Leon Uris. Written just weeks before Hitchcock fired Uris as the screenwriter for the motion picture "Topaz," in part: "...I have been having further thoughts about the latter bit of our yarn. I still feel we are missing an element which I think is most important for us to incorporate. This is the menace to the life of Andre Devereaux. As we have it at present, we have Jarre talking to Granville concerning the mistrust of Devereaux, and Granville in return telling Jarre that Devereaux will be taken care of. Now somehow we never follow through with this threat...I'm not at the moment positive about this, but it would seem to me that we ought to consider the possibility that when Andre is interviewed by the police (after the death of Jarre), he convinces them that his son-in-law could not be responsible...with the warmest and fondest wishes to you in the purpose that you are able to achieve in writing the most perfect, sophisticated, witty, apt and characterful dialogue for this picture..." Much more exceptional content. Also included is a 12-page carbon typed narrative outline of "Topaz," 4to, each page measuring 11 x 8.5 inches and heavily annotated by Uris who has put a personal comment after each of Alfred Hitchcocks suggestions, i.e. "later," "now," "Someone has gotten to my editor," "yes," "no," "subtle," "O.K.," etc. In essence, Uris's comments showed his lack of flexibility in broadening his manuscript of "Topaz" -- a decision that forced Hitchcock to fire him. Excellent condition.

The condition of the book is FINE- with a very small bookstore sticker on the first free endpaper. The dust jacket is in FINE- condition with very minimal surface wear. As Kotaro Iizawo explains in "The History of Japanese Photography", the aim of the enormously influential Provoke movement was to "rethink the rigidified relation between word and image, and to create 'new language, in short, new thought.'" Founded by Koji Taki and Nakahira Takuma in late 1968 (Daido Moriyama joined the group for their second issue), the group produced "fragmented images that completely demolished the established aesthetic and grammar of photography." In keeping with the tumultuous events of that year, the artists of Provoke were fierce in their desire to do away with received ideas and meanings ("the world of pseudo-certainty"). And, in true avant-garde spirit, theirs was a frontal assault on the medium and the institutions in which they were working. As individuals, however, they were constantly at odds with one another; Provoke, their house organ, ceased publication in August 1969 after only three issues. Provoke 4&5, published a year after the dissolution of the group, represents their final statement and contains five portfolios, Provoke 1-5, and six texts, Predict 1-6.         Desert Solitaire: A Season in the Wilderness

McGraw-Hill Book Company New York: McGraw-Hill Book Company, 1968. First edition. Hardcover. Peter Parnall. 269pp. Octavo [21.5 cm] Brown cloth. Illustrated. Fine/Near fine. Subtle rubbing to corners of jacket. Small bookstore sticker at head of front flap. Blind ownership embossment in lower right corner of title page. Signed holographic letter from Abbey laid in.

        The Instant Enemy [Bound Galleys]

NY: Knopf. 1968. An uncorrected proof copy of this Lew Archer novel in the form of comb-bound galleys. A proof with exceptional provenance: it belonged to Anthony Boucher (with "Boucher" in orange pencil on the front cover), one of the seminal figures in the mystery field. Boucher was a co-founder of the Mystery Writers of America and winner of one of the first Edgar Awards that group gave out, for his reviews of mystery fiction. The annual mystery convention, Bouchercon as it is popularly known, is named for him. Some chipping to the top of the plastic binding, and minor creasing and fading to covers; very good. An extremely uncommon proof, and a particularly notable copy of it. . First Edition.
