        The American Cinema (First Edition)

E.P. Dutton New York: E.P. Dutton, 1968. First Edition. First Edition, one of 1500 copies printed. "The American Cinema" introduced auteur theory to America when it was published in 1968, and sparked a long and famous debate between Sarris and Pauline Kael. Auteur theory sees a film director (rather than the producer, studio, screenwriters, or actors) as the author of a film, and was one of the founding principles used by the directors in the French New Wave (Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rohmer, et al). Using the new thinking in this book, Sarris re-evaluated the pantheon of important American directors who had made films between 1929 and 1968. Fine in an about Fine dust jacket. A touch of offsetting to the front endpapers, owner initials on the front endpaper, and only the most minute wear to the jacket. Extremely uncommon in this condition.

        The Instant Enemy

NY: Knopf. 1968. A review copy of the sixteenth Lew Archer novel. Macdonald's Lew Archer novels frequently turned on a plot twist involving the distant past of one or more of the characters, and in doing so he brought questions of character and character development to the forefront of his mysteries in a way that was uncommon at the time but has since become standard in the genre. Macdonald's novels updated Chandler's by presenting as context and background the Los Angeles of the 1950s and 1960s, where Chandler's had painted a rich verbal portrait of the L.A. of the Thirties and Forties. This copy is inscribed by Macdonald to Brian Kirby, a noted southern California bookman. Kirby was the editor of the avant garde publishing house Essex House in the 1960s, and is a well-known expert on filmscripts and film history. A fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with a short, closed edge tear at the upper front panel. Review slip laid in. Note: the signature and the inscription seem to be written with two different pens: it's possible Kirby had a signed copy, which he asked Macdonald to inscribe to him. . First Edition. Hardcover.

        American Horse-Drawn Vehicles

Bonanza Books New York: Bonanza Books, [ca 1968]. Reprint. Quarto (28cm). Cloth boards; dustjacket; 101pp. Very Good. A Christmas gift to Ben Shahn from Walker Evans, with a long and personal gift inscription: "Dear Old Dr. Ben - This book I've just found seems to be just for you. I hear we're about to see you, at last: what a pleasure. I'm a doctor now, too, so it amuses me to name you. You've always been something of a doctor to me, anyway. And old? We're both that, I guess. Let's behave it. Nobody else dares. Merry Christmas / Much love, and to B. too / Walker / Nov 22, 1968." Despite opposing temperaments, and excepting brief fallings-out over the termination of Evans's FSA career and, later, over Evans's comparative apathy during the HUAC hearings, Evans and Ben remained close friends for life - a rare feat, as Shahn's long list of alienated ex-associates would attest. Evans's inscription, poking fun at his own and Shahn's honorary doctorates, reveals a sense of humor and affectionate indulgence which were by all accounts prerequesites for anyone who wished to remain close with Shahn for long. By this date Shahn was quite ill; it's not certain whether the visit to which Evans refers ever took place.

From Reihe A: volumes V/17, VI/23 and VII/28. From Reihe B is volume IV/14,2 missing. Some volumes with name (Jan Maegaard) on front endpaper.. From the library of the Danish composer and music professor Jan Maegaard (1926-2012), internationally recognized as a leading expert on Arnold Schönberg. His dissertation, Studien zur Entwicklung des dodekaphonen Satzes bei Arnold Schönberg (1972), were based on 15 years of intense studies.** Arnold Schönberg (1874-1951) was one of the most influential and important classical composers in the 20th century, in the field of modern classical composition. In his early carreer as a composer, he published Gurre-Lieder, inspired by the Danish author I.P. Jacobsen, and was recognized by both Richard Strauss and Gustav Mahler because of that work, but by Mahler also for his earlier works. In the follwing years his musical foundation moved further away from the more broadly accepted scope, and in 1910 he published the book "Harmonienlehre", which still today is a ground-breaking introduction to modern classical music. After World War I, he developed the dodecaphonic (also known as twelve-tone) music, where the total abscense of tonality, harmony and tonal uniformity struck the audiences and musicians of the time, as strongly provoking. This line of composition would establish Arnold Schönberg's ideas of innovative classical music, as the new, leading interpretation of modernity and musical renewall. In attempt to understand Schönberg's music, the name dodecaphonic, or twelve-tone music, have been replaced by the label "atonal music" or "serial music". Schönberg allways detested the label "atonal" since helt felt that those who named his works by that label, didn't understand the core of his musical ideas, but the label "serial music" became him better.Arnold Schönberg inspired numerous composers, where the most important is Anton Webern, Alban Berg, Hanns Eisler and Pierre Boulez. His music has been played around the globe, and is still considered as the centerpiece of modern composition. Schönberg's music reached as far as to Hollywwod, where his music has been frequently used in horror movies, like composers as Claude Debussy and Pierre Boulez.Arnold Schönberg was in strong opposition to the Nazi regime in Germany, and fled to USA in 1933, where he continued with composing new music, as well as teaching music. His most prominent students from that time was among others John Cage, H. Owen Reed and Lou Hamilton.*** This monumental and authoritative publication consists of 2 series. The series A contain all completed works, whereas series B contains early versions, ideas and fragments

Optical filtering of electron micrographs + Reconstruction of three dimensional structures from electron micrographs

1966-1968. Three-Dimensional Digital Image Processing Rosier, D. J. de and Klug, Aaron (1926- ). (1) Optical filtering of electron micrographs: Reconstruction of one-sided images. Offprint from Nature 212 (1966). 8, [1]pp. 212 x 141 mm. Without wrappers as issued. (2) Reconstruction of three dimensional structures from electron micrographs. Offprint from Nature 217 (1968). 4, [1]pp. 277 x 205 mm. Without wrappers as issued. Together 2 offprints. Light toning, otherwise fine. First Separate Editions. Klug and de Rosier invented methods for two-dimensional and three-dimensional digital image processing of electron microscope images. The latter method provided the theory behind the development of computed tomography (CT) by Hounsfield in the early 1970s. Hounsfield's invention of CT in the early 1970s benefited from several discussions with Klug about digital imaging (personal communication from Klug to J. Norman). Hounsfield received a share of the 1979 Nobel Prize in physiology/medicine for his invention of CT, which provided the first means for visualizing, in three dimensions, virtually all types of tissue within the body (see G-M 2700.4 and Grolier Medical Hundred 100). Klug received the Nobel Prize for chemistry in 1982 "for his development of crystallographic electron microscopy and his structural elucidation of biologically important nucleic acid-protein complexes." A press release written at the time refers to Klug's two- and three-dimensional imaging methods as an important part of his work: Electron microscopy has long been used to obtain a two-dimensional picture of biological objects. The power of the method to give a clear picture of the structure is, however, limited by several factors. The molecules of life consist mainly of light atoms, which makes the picture lacking in contrast. Increased contrast can be achieved with long exposure times, but this entails the danger that the structure is destroyed by radiation damage. Instead the contrast is generally improved by "staining" with heavy metals, which can also lead to a distortion of the structure. Klug has shown that pictures of biological objects seemingly lacking in contrast often contain a large amount of structural information, which can be made available by a mathematical manipulation of the original picture. His method allows electron microscope pictures of high quality to be obtained with very low radiation doses and without the use of heavy metal stains. In this way changes in the sample are minimized, so that the electron microscope picture at high resolution is a true representation of the original biological structure. The method gives a two-dimensional projection of the sample only, but Klug has shown that a three-dimensional reconstruction of the object can be obtained by collecting pictures in several different directions of projection (Nobel e-museum). 38691

An obscure American popular music autobiography, wherein Otis relates his integration as a Greek-American musician into the Watts Negro community of the 1930s and 40's, as well as his adventurous life beyond that time.         In a Narrow Grave

Austin: Encino. 1968. McMurtry's first book of nonfiction, a collection of essays on Texas. Done by a small press in Austin, the first printing was so rife with typographical errors that it was destroyed; reportedly only about 15 copies survived, although recent estimates have suggested the number might be a bit higher but still very small. This is one of those copies, with "skycrapers" for "skyscrapers" on page 105. Although not called for, this copy is signed by McMurtry. Fine in a fine dust jacket; a flawless copy. Easily the scarcest trade edition in the McMurtry canon -- at least that we know of -- and this is as beautiful copy of it as could be hoped for. Provenance: the Bruce Kahn collection. . First Edition. Hardcover.
