        In a Narrow Grave

Austin: Encino. 1968. McMurtry's first book of nonfiction, a collection of essays on Texas. Done by a small press in Austin, the first printing was so rife with typographical errors that it was destroyed; reportedly only about 15 copies survived, although recent estimates have suggested the number might be a bit higher but still very small. This is one of those copies, with "skycrapers" for "skyscrapers" on page 105. Although not called for, this copy is signed by McMurtry. Fine in a fine dust jacket; a flawless copy. Easily the scarcest trade edition in the McMurtry canon -- at least that we know of -- and this is as beautiful copy of it as could be hoped for. Provenance: the Bruce Kahn collection. . First Edition. Hardcover.

Archive of Signed Letters to LOCUS

Sherman Oaks [1968-1975]: Harlan Ellison, 1968 An interesting archive of signed letters from Harlan Ellison addressed to Charles Brown, editor of LOCUS dates from December 31st, 1968 through January 3rd, 1976. A total of 24 pages constituting 17 letters covering a wide range of 'hot' topics. "Dear Charlie: Please publish as written. ITEM IN LOCUS 73: "Ellison's DANGEROUS VISIONS is a major travesty of the words in the title - my own piece, 'The Assination of J.F. Kennedy Considered as a Downhill Motor Race,'was declined on the grounds that 'many millions of Americans might be offended'. In other words, dangerous, but not too dangerous, visions," -- J. G. Ballard / If in fact Jim Ballard said this, it is pure muddle-headed bullshit. I never saw the story." "Charlie: Some news for the excellent LOCUS. My STAR TRECK script that won the Writer's Guild of America award was the original version, not repeat, NOT the aired emasculated version. Forthcoming stories: THE PITLL PAWOB DIVISION (Galaxy), a story I wrote around an unpublished Hannes Bok painting I unearthed in Emil Petaja's files. Books forthcoming: PARTNERS IN WONDER (Belmont), a collection of stories on which I collaborated with Laumer, Asimov, Budrys, Slesar, Hensley, Sheckley, Delaney, Davidson, Zelazny and Sturgeon. Sometime towards the end of this year or first of 1969. . AGAIN DANGEROUS VISIONS, Volume 2" "5 February 69 / Dear Charlie and Marsha: This is URGENT. Double day's traditional practice with hardcover books is to 'retire them', i.e. put them out-of-print, as soon as sales slack off. Philip K. Dick's brilliant "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" went out of print after being available for less than six months". "Harlan also advises that recently-written novella "A Boy And His Dog" has apparently scared off all possible magazine purchasers". "25 February 69 / Dear Charlie & Marsha: Here is some current news. Harlan Ellison Writes: The first draft of my two TV series sold to Paramount. It is called "Man Without Time" - a retelling of the Gilgamesh Legend. Leonard Nimoy has expressed interest". "20 March 69 / Browns: / By the time you get this, I'll be in Rio de Janeiro, where they will be showing my award-winning Outer Limits segment, "Demon With A Glass Hand". (A shock hit me when I realized that Roddenberry's spinoff on "Star Treck", called "Assignment: Earth", was a direct parallel to my "Man Without Time" -- which I had laid on him early in our relationship. Terrific Archive - Rich content throughout. Harlan Jay Ellison (born May 27, 1934) is an American writer. His principal genre is speculative fiction. His published works include over 1,000 short stories, novellas, screenplays, teleplays, essays, and a wide range of criticism covering not only literature, but film, television, and print media. His reputation as an editor and anthologist was cemented with his two ground-breaking science fiction anthologies, Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions. Ellison has won numerous awards, including multiple Hugos, Nebulas and Edgars.. Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters & Documents.

Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?

Garden City, NY: Doubleday and Company, Inc., 1968. First edition / First printing.. Hardcover.. A near fine copy in a near fine dust jacket.. Octavo. Arguably, the author's most famous and influential book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" is one of the seminal works in all of science fiction, and particularly in the pantheon of modern science fiction. This post-apocalyptic near future tale which pits humans against androids was a 1968 Nebula Award nominee. Basis for the 1982 film, "Blade Runner," directed by Ridley Scott and starring Harrison Ford, Rutger Hauer and Sean Young. ~Publisher's gray cloth with gilt titles to spine. Stated "First Edition" on copyright page, $3.95 price intact on inside flap, and printing code "J5" in gutter on page 210. A near fine copy, ex-library, with residue of library pouch previously glued to recto of front free endpaper evident (with associated crimping), along with two small areas of age-related spots (from either tape or some other material laid over the top and bottom edge of the page), and "withdrawn" stamp in black. Verso of front free endpaper has a small age spot toward top of page and a single age-related spot at base (in the same place that it occurs on the recto of the page). This side of the page is also crimped, likely from the removal of the library card pouch on front side. Very slight age-related spots at the top and bottom edge of both sides of the rear flyleaf, also apparently residue from either tape or some other material laid over the top and bottom edge of the page as was the case with the front flyleaf. Single age-spot on each of front and rear pastedown, as well. Library stamp at top of dedication page, along with two handwritten notations above it, and two other handwritten notations in the gutter of the page (each a library notation of some sort), all in pencil. The volume is otherwise very clean internally with no other marks of any kind, and also barely appears to have been read, which is curious, as this is an ex-library copy. The boards are clean, with the exception of some very faint tape residue, in each instance a small area, one at the top and one at the base of both the front and rear boards (hardly noticeable). Gilt tiles to spine legible and spine is solid and tight, although it does have the very slightest of lean toward the top end. ~The dust jacket is near fine, with some slight tape residue at each of the four corners of the flaps, with some light rubbing and wear at head and tail of spine and at corners and creasing of front flap. The title as printed on the spine appears to have some age-toning and there is a library category sticker ["Science Fiction"] taped toward the base, otherwise the jacket is in remarkable shape, particularly given that this is an ex-library copy. It almost appears as if this copy was held as a reserve copy and then forgotten about for decades. ~Overall, it is in excellent condition and with the exception of the front free endpaper, this copy would likely receive a condition grading of fine/fine by many sellers. Iconic jacket design by Harry Sehring.

A clean, fine and bright copy virtually without blemish, London, The Tryon Gallery in association with George Rainbird, [1968]. * FURTHER PHOTOGRAPHS ON REQUEST.* A superb production with most attractive plates, including nine of orchids and six of bromeliads, each plate with a descriptive leaf. Margaret Mee travelled to the Amazon area 15 times over a 32 year period, by canoe, on foot and often alone. Her paintings and sketches "could stand without shame in the high company of such masters as Georg Dionysius Ehret and Redoute" (Wilfred Blunt). Sitwell in Great Flower Books describes her work as: 'exceptional and quite in the tradition of the great eighteenth-century books '. 'Mee's work is of an unusually high order of excellence and in the best tradition of flower painting' [Taylor, director of Royal Botanic Garden of Kew]. One of the plants illustrated was discovered by Mee herself. * "Margaret Ursula Mee, MBE (1909 - 1988) British botanical artist who specialized in plants from the Brazilian Amazon rainforest. She was also one of the first environmentalists to draw attention to the impact of large-scale mining and deforestation on the Amazon Basin. After the war, Mee studied art at St. Martin's School of Art, London. In 1950 she attended the Camberwell School of Arts and Crafts, where she learnt her style of illustration, and received a national diploma in painting and design in 1950. She moved to Brazil with Greville Mee, in 1952 to teach art in the British school of São Paulo. Her first expedition was in 1956 to Belém in the Amazon Basin. She then became a botanical artist for São Paulo's Instituto de Botanica in 1958, exploring the rainforest and more specifically Amazonas state from 1964, painting the plants she saw, some new to science, as well as collecting some for later illustration. She created 400 folios of gouache illustrations, 40 sketchbooks, and 15 diaries. Mee travelled briefly to England in 1968 for the exhibition and publication of her book, Flowers of the Brazilian Forests. She returned to Brazil and joined protests to draw international attention to the deforestation of the Amazon region. In 1976 Mee was awarded the MBE for services to Brazilian botany and a fellowship of the Linnean Society in 1986. She also received recognition in Brazil including an honorary citizenship of Rio in 1975, the Brazilian order of Cruzeiro do Sul in 1979. In her honour, the Margaret Mee Amazon Trust was founded to further education and research in Amazonian plant life and conservation. In 1990 Mee was recognised for her environmental achievements by The United Nations Environment Programme and added to its Global 500 Roll of Honour. The Diaries of Margaret Mee, which she wrote between 1956 and 1988, were published posthumously in 2004 and included an illustrated account of her expeditions to the Amazonian rainforest. Most of her illustrations are now part of the Kew Gardens collection. - Wikipedia

In Die Festo Natalis, Et Circuncisionis Christi, Sapphicum Alphabeticum

(Milan): Officina Bodoni, 1968. Oblong 12mo. (14)ff. From an edition of 80 copies, this is one of forty printed for André Jammes, the French antiquarian bookseller. With a New Year's greeting inscribed on the first free endpaper from Jammes and his family. A beautifully-printed Christmas alphabet book with red calligraphic initials on each page. These elaborate initials were derived from a 1523 writing book by Ludovico Vicentino Degli Arrighi, an influential Italian bookseller, papal scribe, and later, typographer. Vicentino admired italic script and wrote an entire work about it; fittingly, this book is set entirely in Arrighi-Vicenza italic. The text is derived from a Christmas hymn and is represented in the original Latin. Extremely fine in paper-covered boards that look like vellum, in original brown card slipcase.
