        2001: A Space Odyssey

New York: New American Library, 1968. First edition of the author's most well-known work. Octavo. Inscribed by the author. An excellent copy in a near fine dust jacket that shows just a touch of wear. Housed in a custom clamshell box. Arthur C. Clarke wrote this novel while Stanley Kubrick created the film, the two collaborating on both projects. The novel is much more detailed and intimate, and definitely easier to comprehend. Even though history has disproved its "predictions," it's still loaded with exciting and awe-inspiring science fiction. --Brooks Peck Dazzling...wrenching...a mind-bender. (Time) By standing the universe on its head, he makes us see the ordinary universe in a different light. (New Yorker)

[Photographie originale signée] Place du Zócalo à Mexico (plaza de la Constitución), 1963. [Longue dédicace autographe de Cartier-Bresson à Jean-Michel Folon]

1968. Photo. Illus. by Henri Cartier-Bresson. Bon. Aucune reliure.

        American Horse-Drawn Vehicles

New York: Bonanza Books, [ca 1968]. Reprint. Quarto (28cm). Cloth boards; dustjacket; 101pp. Very Good. A Christmas gift to Ben Shahn from Walker Evans, with a long and personal gift inscription: "Dear Old Dr. Ben - This book I've just found seems to be just for you. I hear we're about to see you, at last: what a pleasure. I'm a doctor now, too, so it amuses me to name you. You've always been something of a doctor to me, anyway. And old? We're both that, I guess. Let's behave it. Nobody else dares. Merry Christmas / Much love, and to B. too / Walker / Nov 22, 1968."& & Despite opposing temperaments, and excepting brief fallings-out over the termination of Evans's FSA career and, later, over Evans's comparative apathy during the HUAC hearings, Evans and Ben remained close friends for life - a rare feat, as Shahn's long list of alienated ex-associates would attest. Evans's inscription, poking fun at his own and Shahn's honorary doctorates, reveals a sense of humor and affectionate indulgence which were by all accounts prerequesites for anyone who wished to remain close with Shahn for long. By this date Shahn was quite ill; it's not certain whether the visit to which Evans refers ever took place.

Archive of Signed Letters to LOCUS

Sherman Oaks [1968-1975]: Harlan Ellison, 1968 An interesting archive of signed letters from Harlan Ellison addressed to Charles Brown, editor of LOCUS dates from December 31st, 1968 through January 3rd, 1976. A total of 24 pages constituting 17 letters covering a wide range of 'hot' topics. "Dear Charlie: Please publish as written. ITEM IN LOCUS 73: "Ellison's DANGEROUS VISIONS is a major travesty of the words in the title - my own piece, 'The Assination of J.F. Kennedy Considered as a Downhill Motor Race,'was declined on the grounds that 'many millions of Americans might be offended'. In other words, dangerous, but not too dangerous, visions," -- J. G. Ballard / If in fact Jim Ballard said this, it is pure muddle-headed bullshit. I never saw the story." "Charlie: Some news for the excellent LOCUS. My STAR TRECK script that won the Writer's Guild of America award was the original version, not repeat, NOT the aired emasculated version. Forthcoming stories: THE PITLL PAWOB DIVISION (Galaxy), a story I wrote around an unpublished Hannes Bok painting I unearthed in Emil Petaja's files. Books forthcoming: PARTNERS IN WONDER (Belmont), a collection of stories on which I collaborated with Laumer, Asimov, Budrys, Slesar, Hensley, Sheckley, Delaney, Davidson, Zelazny and Sturgeon. Sometime towards the end of this year or first of 1969. . AGAIN DANGEROUS VISIONS, Volume 2" "5 February 69 / Dear Charlie and Marsha: This is URGENT. Double day's traditional practice with hardcover books is to 'retire them', i.e. put them out-of-print, as soon as sales slack off. Philip K. Dick's brilliant "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" went out of print after being available for less than six months". "Harlan also advises that recently-written novella "A Boy And His Dog" has apparently scared off all possible magazine purchasers". "25 February 69 / Dear Charlie & Marsha: Here is some current news. Harlan Ellison Writes: The first draft of my two TV series sold to Paramount. It is called "Man Without Time" - a retelling of the Gilgamesh Legend. Leonard Nimoy has expressed interest". "20 March 69 / Browns: / By the time you get this, I'll be in Rio de Janeiro, where they will be showing my award-winning Outer Limits segment, "Demon With A Glass Hand". (A shock hit me when I realized that Roddenberry's spinoff on "Star Treck", called "Assignment: Earth", was a direct parallel to my "Man Without Time" -- which I had laid on him early in our relationship. Terrific Archive - Rich content throughout. Harlan Jay Ellison (born May 27, 1934) is an American writer. His principal genre is speculative fiction. His published works include over 1,000 short stories, novellas, screenplays, teleplays, essays, and a wide range of criticism covering not only literature, but film, television, and print media. His reputation as an editor and anthologist was cemented with his two ground-breaking science fiction anthologies, Dangerous Visions and Again, Dangerous Visions. Ellison has won numerous awards, including multiple Hugos, Nebulas and Edgars.. Signed by Author. Original Autographed Letters & Documents.

        King Oedipus

Verona: Officina Bodoni, 1968. Folio. (96) (iv) pp. From an edition of 114 copies, this is one of 105 on Magnani paper, signed by the artist, Giacomo Manzù on the colophon page. This copy also bears a contemporary inscription from Manzù on the front endpaper. Illustrated with seven full-page etchings by Manzù. Printed by Martino Mardersteig for the American art publisher, A.E. Racolin. Loose, as issued, in the publisher's binding of green morocco-backed vellum with a relief of the head of Oedipus by Manzù. Martino Mardersteig recounts the "strange pre-history" of this elegant edition: he and A.E. Racolin approached Manzù twice about his illustrating a book for an American audience, and both times the artist rejected the poems under consideration for his illustrations. During the second visit, Mardersteig noticed Manzù's sketches for costumes and decor for Stravinsky's Oedipus Rex, which included "a magnificent metre-high relief of the head of Oedipus". Mardersteig and Manzù reached an agreement on an edition of Sophocles's tragedy, and the magnificent relief became the first etching as well as its cover illustration. This is a very fine copy of one the most elusive Officina Bodoni titles, housed in its original folding case which shows very light bumps to corners.
