        The Instant Enemy [Bound Galleys]

NY|~|: Knopf|~|, 1968|~|. NY: Knopf. 1968. An uncorrected proof copy of this Lew Archer novel in the form of comb-bound galleys. A proof with exceptional provenance: it belonged to Anthony Boucher (with "Boucher" in orange pencil on the front cover), one of the seminal figures in the mystery field. Boucher was a co-founder of the Mystery Writers of America and winner of one of the first Edgar Awards that group gave out, for his reviews of mystery fiction. The annual mystery convention, Bouchercon as it is popularly known, is named for him. Some chipping to the top of the plastic binding, and minor creasing and fading to covers; very good. An extremely uncommon proof, and a particularly notable copy of it. . First Edition.

        Manuscript]: Now the Fun Starts

1968 - Twenty-one photocopied pages printed rectos only. Heavily copy edited in different colored pencils with several reasonably substantial changes to the text, including the original title ("The Christmas Spirit"), whether by the author himself or by an editor is not entirely clear. A humorous story about a businessman who commutes to Manhattan, drinks his way through the annual office Christmas party, and forgets that he has invited three Arabs from the U.N. to Christmas dinner at his Red Bank, New Jersey home, where they promptly appear while he endures the resultant hangover. Ham is served. Published in the December 28, 1968 issue of *The Saturday Evening Post*. Nathaniel Benchley, the son of Robert Benchley and the father of Peter Benchley, is known for his comic novel, *The Off-Islanders*, also about unexpected visitors and the basis for the movie *The Russians Are Coming! The Russians Are Coming!* A very funny period piece.

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1968. Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1968. Final Shooting Script for the 1969 film. From the collection of still photographer Bob Willoughby, who worked as the special still photographer for the film.& & Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) studied with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, worked as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar," and as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. & & Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s (this was one of his final films), though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life.& & This second of two film adaptations of James Hilton's masterpiece was an epic interpretation (it casts the story as a widescreen musical, with a 144-minute running time) than its Oscar-winning 1940 predecessor. Nominated for two Academy Awards, one of which was for O'Toole's unforgettable performance as Arthur Chipper, a shy and withdrawn teacher at a boys' school whose life changes radically when he marries a music hall singer (Clark).& & Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as FINAL SHOOTING SCRIPT on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 52, dated June 27, 1968, with credits for producer Jacobs, director Ross, and screenwriter Rattigan.       Macmillan, New York 1968 - "First Printing" stated. Book will close both its own text block and its own black cloth-covered boards. Not price clipped; original $7.95 price showing. Dust jacket has minor chipping only to head and tail of spine. Introduction by Lt. Gen. Adolph Galland. Dated 4 January, 1969, signed in full by both authors, and inscribed in author Toliver's hand "To my friend Ewald Glenn Kruggel, one of the greatest troops of the 20th TFW in the 1955-1959 era. . . ." Col. Kruggel, born 1926 in Beaumont, Calif., was a B-17 gunner in the Philippines in 1945, flew 98 missions with the 67th Recon Wing in Korea (shot down once but successfully E&E), and flew 208 missions (101 North) in an F-4 out of Cam Rhan Bay, Republic of Vietnam. At the time Toliver knew him, he would have been flying F-84Fs and F-100Ds out of RAF Wethersfield, England. Retiring after 33 years, Kruggel moved to Las Vegas, where he spent 10 years building a Vans RV-4 and spent 12 years flying it. By our reckoning , that would have made him about 73 when he "hit some power lines chasing motorcycles over the desert," destroying the plane, at which point (he calmly told his buddies with the Super Sabre Society) "I was able to land at a nearby airport. That was it!!! I sold the wreck. My wife of 55 years grounded me and I took up playing golf again." 348 pp. including index. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Illustrated dust jacket. Signed by the author in black ink on the front fly leaf. The book is tighly and squarely bound, in very good condition showing only mild soiling to the rear board. There is a small stain at the foot of the text block. The dust jacket shows sporadic rubbing and pinholing, with a bit of chipping at its edges; only minor losses. Despite its flaws the dust jacket is still shows as a bright and vivid example of the artwork. Drawings and jacket design by Peter Parnall. The author's fourth book and first work of nonfiction. Five thousand copies of the first edition were printed. It has now gone on to sell over two million copies taking its rightful place alongside Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring as a classic of environmental and wilderness literature.

Guerrilla: Free Newspaper of the Streets, Vol. 2, No. 3, 1968

Detroit: Van Newkirk, 1968. Detroit: Van Newkirk, 1968. 16 x 22.25 inches, folded in quarters but meant to be read as a broadside, chipped at right upper corner and at top fold, tear at midline fold, mildly yellowed, on one side text is poster for Eldridge Cleaver's 1968 run for US President . On the verso is the newspaper containing an endorsement of the Black Panther Party and a reprint of its platform and program, quotes from the writings of Andre Breton, Robert Duncan, Dave Sinclair, Murray Bookchin, and Eldridge Cleaver, and a general promotion of cultural revolution. According to the British Library, Guerrilla was published by Allen Van Newkirk in Detroit from 1967-1968. Van Newkirk, who was connected with the White Panthers, styled his paper after Black Panther publications, and called Guerrilla "a broadside of poetry and revolution." He was known for his anarchic behavior. During a New York City poetry reading by Kenneth Koch, Van Newkirk charged the stage firing a pistol (loaded with blanks) declaring "death to bourgeois poets" while others threw copies of the Guerrilla to the stunned (and fleeing) audience. According to Detroit's Metro Times, he was arrested in a December 2005 robbery in a Toy's R Us near Vancouver, British Columbia. John Sinclair, originally an editor of Guerrilla, remarked, "The surrealists were his big inspiration, and if sticking up Toys "R" Us isn't a surreal act, I don't know what is!
