Very Good. np (circa 650pp), profusely illustrated in b&w. Text in English and Swedish. Designed by John Melin, Gosta Svensson and Stig Arbman. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the innovatively designed catalogue published on the occasion of the Andy Warhol exhibition at Moderna Museet in Stockholm from February to March 1968. Schiff, Billy Name, and a young Stephen (Eric) Shore. An internally most handsome example of the exceedingly uncommon first edition of this brilliant Pop Art gem (cited on pages 144-145 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II") showing some typical light patination to its newsprint pages along with a diagonal soft crease to the upper foredge corner of the front cover.         Typed Letter Signed to Leon Uris and 12-page outline for the film "Topaz

Universal City, 1968. unbound. Historically important typed letter signed, 2 pages, 4to, 11 x 8.5 inches, on "Alfred J. Hitchcock Productions, Inc." letterhead. Universal City, June 20, 1968. Signed with his iconic self-caricature drawing to acclaimed author and screenwriter Leon Uris. Written just weeks before Hitchcock fired Uris as the screenwriter for the motion picture "Topaz," in part: "...I have been having further thoughts about the latter bit of our yarn. I still feel we are missing an element which I think is most important for us to incorporate. This is the menace to the life of Andre Devereaux. As we have it at present, we have Jarre talking to Granville concerning the mistrust of Devereaux, and Granville in return telling Jarre that Devereaux will be taken care of. Now somehow we never follow through with this threat...I'm not at the moment positive about this, but it would seem to me that we ought to consider the possibility that when Andre is interviewed by the police (after the death of Jarre), he convinces them that his son-in-law could not be responsible...with the warmest and fondest wishes to you in the purpose that you are able to achieve in writing the most perfect, sophisticated, witty, apt and characterful dialogue for this picture..." Much more exceptional content. Also included is a 12-page carbon typed narrative outline of "Topaz," 4to, each page measuring 11 x 8.5 inches and heavily annotated by Uris who has put a personal comment after each of Alfred Hitchcocks suggestions, i.e. "later," "now," "Someone has gotten to my editor," "yes," "no," "subtle," "O.K.," etc. In essence, Uris's comments showed his lack of flexibility in broadening his manuscript of "Topaz" -- a decision that forced Hitchcock to fire him. Excellent condition.

La Police A L’Orte C’Est La Police Chez Vous" [Police at the ORTF Means Police in Your Home - Original Protest Poster from 1968 Paris Student Uprising]

[Paris], [1968]. Very good. 44cm x 70cm, screen-printed in blue on heavy stock.  Stamped Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Arts Atelier Populaire at bottom right. Very good overall with a few large closed tears and some small spots of loss to the edges. Else bright and clean. Original and iconic poster from the 1968 May student uprising in Paris. Produced at the Ecole Nationale Superieure des Beaux Art, the poster criticizes media manipulation by French state television, the ORTF or Office de Radiodiffusion-Télévision Française. A week before this poster was produced, a May 16th communiqué published by the Occupation Committee of the Autonomous and Popular Sorbonne University entitled “Watch out for Manipulators! Watch Out For Bureaucrats!” (translation quoted from The Situationist International Anthology) explains the antagonism towards the ORTF: “Why is the press committee -- which dares to censor the communiqués that it is charged to transmit to the agencies -- composed of apprentice journalists who are careful not to disappoint the ORTF bosses or jeopardize their future job possibilities?” The ORTF, subject to constant government interference, did not reference any student unrest at all in the months of March and April. In response, on May 25th a limited strike was held at the station followed by a full strike on June 3rd. However, the ORTF gave only limited and highly partisan coverage to the strikes. Nonetheless, the image from this poster [Kugelberg and Vermes #195 p. 172) - featuring barbed wire woven between the letters of the station (a la an atom) - remains one of the more iconic images from the 1968 protests and has been reproduced on several occasions. Even though these posters were produced sometimes in the hundreds for each design, they were posted on walls and placards and never meant to be saved, so their ephemeral nature contributes to their rarity. Evidence of a small price sticker removal on the front endpaper, else book is bright and clean; jacket is lightly rubbed at the extremities and spine ends. An obscure American popular music autobiography, wherein Otis relates his integration as a Greek-American musician into the Watts Negro community of the 1930s and 40's, as well as his adventurous life beyond that time. Otis was one of the most successful bandleaders of his era, a rhythm and blues pianist, vibraphonist, drummer, singer, bandleader, and impresario, who wrote and popularized "Harlem Nocturne," then went on to discover The Coasters, Etta James, Big Jay MacNeely, Jackie Wilson, Hank Ballard, and Little Willie John. In the 1950s, he wrote "Willie and the Hand Jive" and "Every Beat of My Heart." His son is the multi-talented Shuggie Otis, a cult figure in American soul and pop music, who is best known for writing the 1970s hit, "Strawberry Letter 23." Otis was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994. A rare book, chronicling an extraordinary life in jazz, blues and rhythm and blues. An attractive copy of an extremely scarce title.

        The Pleasure Seekers

Bloomsbury, 2010. 1st printing 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. As New Unread UK first/first SIGNED in fine dw. Synopsis: ys securely packed with plenty of bubblewrap in professional boxes and promptly dispatched (within 2-3 days) - 'This is a captivating, delightful novel. I was totally engaged by Tishani Doshi's people and by their world, and the language often rises - when speaking of the great matters, life, death, and above all love - to powerful metaphorical heights' Salman Rushdie 'I read this book almost in one sitting, and became completely engaged by the characters. I suffered those horrible familiar pangs of literary envy' Louis de Bernieres - It all started in August 1968 when Babo, with curly hair and jhill mill teeth, became the first member of the Patel family to leave Madras and fly on a plane all the way to London to further his education. His father should have known there would be trouble: on the morning of the departure he had his first and only dream, in which strange ghosts threw poison-tipped arrows and all his family was lost. But off Babo went, and now here he is, in a flat off the Finchley Road, untraditionally making love to a cream-skinned girl from Wales, Sian Jones, who he fell head over heels for as soon as he saw the twirl of red ribbon in her hair. Ba-ba-boom, ba-ba-boom, ba-ba-boom-boom-boom. Theirs is a mixed-up love in a topsy-turvy world, and their two families will never be the same again. Meet the Patel-Joneses: Babo, Sian, Mayuri and Bean, in their little house with orange and black gates next-door to the Punjab Women's Association. As the twentieth century creaks and croaks its way along - somewhere out there Charles and Diana get hitched; Indira Gandhi is assassinated by her own bodyguards; cable TV arrives in India - these four navigate their way through the uncharted territory of a 'hybrid' family: the hustle and bustle of Babo's relatives, the faraway phone-line crackle of Sian's, the eternal wisdom and soft bosom of great-grandmother Ba, the perils of first love, lost innocence and old age, and the big question: what do you do with the space your loved ones leave behind? In this tender, lyrical and uplifting debut, Tishani Doshi, a prizewinning poet, effortlessly captures the quirks and calamities of one unusual clan in a story of identity, family, belonging and all-transcending love
