For the Sake of a Single Verse

New York Atelier Mourlot 1968 - With Twenty-four Lithographs, Each Signed by Shahn SHAHN, Ben, [artist]. RILKE, Rainer Maria. For the Sake of a Single Verse. New York: Atelier Mourlot, 1968. First edition. One of 200 copies, signed by Shahn out of a total edition of 950. This being number eighteen. Complete with twenty-four lithographs, on Richard de Bas hand-made paper, each signed by the artist. Large folio. Lithographs are loose as issued. Housed in a half vellum over cloth clamshell. Clamshell is embossed on the front with an image of a hand with a pen. Spine of the clamshell lettered in gilt. A fine copy. "I had now long ago found in Rilke the passage that came to mean so much to me. He was a writer about the processes of art who was not telling me what to do, what to think, how to paint. No; he was too engrossed in his own discoveries. He was sharing with me the doubts and the hesitations of art, the probings, the slow emergence of forms. His every line of writing was art, and yet such art was inseparable from its life content. No manifesto could ever tell me more clearly than this one paragraph of Rilke's that art is an emanation from a person; that it is shaped and formed out of the shape and form of that person. In being so acutely personal to him it achieves also a rare universality. Rilke is speaking, (is he not?) to the innermost recesses of the consciousness, an area in which we spend so much of our time and expend so much of our feeling, and yet an area that is so remote from communication with our fellow-beings, an area that is, unhappily, increasingly remote from the reaches of art. " (From the Afterward by Ben Shahn). HBS 66038. $13,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Andy Warhol (Moderna Museet)

Sweden: Moderna Musett, 1968. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of the seminal artist book Andy Warhol published by Moderna Musett, Sweden in 1968 as an exhibition catalogue for the show Andy Warhol at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, February - March, 1968. With virtually no text except for some of Warhol\'s famous quotes, the book contains numerous full page black and white illustrations of iconic Warhol images as well as hundreds of black and white photographs by Rudy Burkhardt, Eric Pollitzer, John Schiff, and Stephen Shore that provide incredible insight into the remarkable creativity of Andy Warhol. Writing about the book in their photobook reference work The Photobook: A History, Volume 2, Parr and Badger stated, It is a fine example of the catalogue-as-artist\'s-book, a form that ostensibly began with the Dadaists and Surrealists, and is produced with some of the roughest reproductions ever seen, which are entirely appropriate, and supplemented by a long section of Factory snapshots by Billy Name. The genre was revitalized by the Pop movement, and Warhol in particular, which demonstrates his position as a latter-day Dadaist. The Moderna Museet publication especially had a great influence upon Japanese photography in the late 1960s and 1970s, particularly the photobooks of the Provoke era. Measuring approximately 10.5 inched x 8.25 inches, the book is glue bound in illustrated wrappers of bright Warholian flowers bleeding over both front and back covers. The condition of the book is in FINE condition in Fine- wraps with small professionally repaired tear and very minimal surface wear. This book is a notoriously delicate publication that is very rarely found in such wonderful condition. Cited in both Parr & Badgers The Photobook: A History and the The Open Book by Andrew Roth.

Basis for the marvelous 1999 animated film *The Iron Giant*, the first feature film from writer/director Brad Bird, who went on to great commercial and critical success (and several worthy Oscars) with Disney's *The Incredibles* and *Ratatouille*. Also the basis for a 1989 concept album by rock legend Pete Townshend, was an executive producer of the film.         TRUE GRIT - INSCRIBED ADVANCE READING COPY WITH TLS

Simon & Schuster, New York 1968 - Advance Reading Copy, preceded only by a serialized version of the novel in the Saturday Evening Post. Octavo; plain white wrappers, with titling and text printed in dark green on spine and front panel; 215pp. This copy has been inscribed and dated by Portis on the page following the dedication page: "For John Hooper of Beaverton, Oregon, With Regards, Charles Portis - April 5, 1998." Accompanying this copy is a short typed letter, also signed by Portis with the date corresponding to the inscription. The note reads: "Dear Mr. Hooper, I'm glad to hear you liked the books. I must have seen one of these advance copies but I don't remember it. Best, Charles Portis." Hint of a forward lean, extremities lightly rubbed, with creasing to spine and covers, and some marginal toning to same; Very Good+. While books with signed bookplates by Portis turn up with some frequency, copies inscribed by Portis are uncommon, and particularly rare in any sort of pre-publication format. This is the only signed advance we have seen, and judging by the note from Portis, signed copies must be uncommon since he didn't seem to remember seeing one. Though Portis is widely considered "a writer's writer" by many of his contemporaries, including Larry McMurtry, James Lee Burke, and Walker Percy, he cares little for his own reputation and is content to remain in his home state of Arkansas. He doesn't do publicity events or book signings. True Grit remains Portis' best-known book, and the basis for both the 1969 film starring John Wayne, and the 2010 version directed by the Coen Brothers, starring Jeff Bridges, Matt Damon, and Josh Brolin. An exceptional copy, with the added bonus of a letter which speaks directly to the scarcity of the item.         Provoke 2

Provoke-sha 1968 - 4to.; illustrated throughout in black-and-white with tight clean pages, gray wrappers printed in black with slight rubbing to spine edges, mylar covering. As a seminal platform for a new visual photographic aesthetic, Provoke magazine is considered among the most important periodicals to be published in postwar Japan. Founded in 1968 by Koji Taki, Takuma Nakahira, Takahiko Okada and Yutaka Takanashi (later joined by Daido Moriyama with the 2nd issue), Provoke established a radical photographic language that rejected sentimentality and the subjective documentary style of previous generations in favor of a raw, out-of-focus style influenced by the student riots and political upheaval of the late 1960s in Japan. Provoke 2 marks the introduction of Daido Moriyama as a Provoke member and features many of his best known purposely unpolished are-bure-boke (rough, blurred, out-of-focus) images along with a portfolio by Nakahira. This is a excellent example of a must-have periodical for any serious photobook collector. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]
