Touching Autograph letter signed by David Ben-Gurion about Bar Mitzvah celebrations for orphans of soldiers killed in the recent Six-Day War

Autograph letter signed "David Ben-Gurion", in Hebrew, one page, 8vo, February 28, 1968, addressed to Shifra Golombian (a war widow). Ben-Gurion praises the Habad Youth initiative to make a Bar Mitzvah ceremony to orphans of soldiers who were killed in the Six-Days war only a year earlier. He regretfully rejects her invitation to take part in the ceremony due to previous engagements and acknowledges her pain and grief. A full translation is included. As tensions loomed before the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967, Be

Black Sparrow Press, Los Angeles 1968 - A Very Good plus copy of this 2nd state of the paperback issue where the misspelling on the front cover has been corrected with a white label. As Kotaro Iizawo explains in \"The History of Japanese Photography\", the aim of the enormously influential Provoke movement was to \"rethink the rigidified relation between word and image, and to create \'new language, in short, new thought.\'\" Founded by Koji Taki and Nakahira Takuma in late 1968 (Daido Moriyama joined the group for their second issue), the group produced \"fragmented images that completely demolished the established aesthetic and grammar of photography.\" In keeping with the tumultuous events of that year, the artists of Provoke were fierce in their desire to do away with received ideas and meanings (\"the world of pseudo-certainty\"). And, in true avant-garde spirit, theirs was a frontal assault on the medium and the institutions in which they were working. As individuals, however, they were constantly at odds with one another; Provoke, their house organ, ceased publication in August 1969 after only three issues. Provoke 4&5, published a year after the dissolution of the group, represents their final statement and contains five portfolios, Provoke 1-5, and six texts, Predict 1-6.

ARPOCRATE SEDUTO SUL LOTO ( Signed )

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

Extremely rare autograph document in Semmelweis' hand, from his time at the St. Rochus Hospital in Pest were he eliminated childbed fever, medical testimony regarding a female patient, signed and dated 24. December 1854.

Despite the wide interest there has been for more than a century in Semmelweis' work and personality there are still today extremely few examples of autograph material by him. In their 1968 article on Semmelweis manuscripts the three authors Antall, Harko, and Vida note: "Researchers always attach great importance to the manuscripts of great personalities. Not only the contents of these manuscripts are of great value, but they are very valuable historical documents and museum pieces too. For this reason and on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Semmelweis' birth we considered necessary to summarize what survived him in manuscript form. He left only few manuscripts; the first drafts of his published works are irretrievably lost. In 1940 György Korbuly summarized the number of the discovered Semmelweis manuscripts and he stated in his article: 'if we inquire, how many manuscripts of Semmelweis we know today, the reply is expressively depressing. We know today only 5 original letters of him". (J.Antall, V.Harko u T.Vida, Semmelweis Ignac összegyütött keziratai, Budapest 1968). The authors continue to mention that since 1940 some new Semmelweis manuscripts had come to light in London and Budapest, but that still in 1966 when Ákos Palla described a newly discovered document he estimated a total number of documents known worldwide to be 20-30. We cannot locate any other autograph material in the auction records.

The large and impressive document (380 x 240 mm) is a medical testimony done by Semmelweis when he was primary obstetrician at the St. Rochus Hospital in Pest. The patient, Anna Petermann, claimed when she was hospitalized for birth, the 9th October 1854, that she was 19 years of age. Due to two obstetric surgeries Semmelweis however realized that the patient must be at least thirty. The document is signed with a large and bold signature by Semmelweis "Ig. Philipp Semmelweis, Med Doctor & Primar-Geburtsarzt zu St. Rochus" and dated "Pest den 24 December 1854".

"During 1848-1849 some 70.000 troops from the Habsburg-ruled Austrian Empire thwarted the Hungarian independence movement, executed or imprisoned its leaders and in the process destroyed parts of Pest. Semmelweis, upon arriving from the Habsburg Vienna in 1850, likely was not warmly welcomed in Pest. On May 20, 1851. Semmelweis took the relatively insignificant, unpaid, honorary head-physician position of the obstetric ward of Pest's small St. Rochus Hospital. He held that position for six years, until June 1857. Childbed fever was rampant at the clinic; at a visit in 1850, just after returning to Pest, Semmelweis found one fresh corpse, another patient in severe agony, and four others seriously ill with the disease. After taking over in 1851, Semmelweis virtually eliminated the disease. During 1851-1855, only eight patients died from childbed fever out of 933 births (0.85%). Despite the impressive results, Semmelweis's ideas were not accepted by the other obstetricians in Budapest. The professor of obstetrics at the University of Pest, Ede Flórián Birly, never adopted Semmelweis's methods. He continued to believe that puerperal fever was due to uncleanliness of the bowel. Therefore, extensive purging was the preferred treatment. After Birly died in 1854, Semmelweis applied for the position. So did Carl Braun - Semmelweis's nemesis and successor as Johann Klein's assistant in Vienna - and Braun received more votes from his Hungarian colleagues than Semmelweis did. Semmelweis was eventually appointed in 1855, but only because the Viennese authorities overruled the wishes of the Hungarians, as Braun did not speak Hungarian. As professor of obstetrics, Semmelweis instituted chlorine washings at the University of Pest maternity clinic. Once again, the results were impressive." (Wikipedia).. One folio leaf (380 x 240 mm) brown paper, very light folding crease to middle (no damage), some creasing to lower part of the leaf but far from and not effecting any writing, slight crease to outer right margin, again with no damage to the writing

Irving's scarce first book, this the issue in red cloth-backed boards. There was also an issue in full red cloth with the text bulking slightly smaller. o.O., 1968 - o.O., 1968. o. Pag. OPp. im Orig. Schuber. Nr. 33 von 61 Expl. Eighd. signiert. Jede Abb. monogrammiert RH 31. In franz. Sprache. - Leichte Gbrsp. Schuber leicht berieben. Postcard/Letter Signed (ALS) [The Grapes of Wrath, East of Eden, Tortilla Flat, Of Mice and Men]

New York, 1968. First edition. None. Fine. A Near Fine Postcard (expected age toning, minor evidence of handling, small hole punched in the margin for insertion into a binder) with the address typed and having on the message side an intriguing letter (ALS) WHOLLY IN JOHN STEINBECK'S HAND and SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK. The postcard bears a New York Post Office cancellation dated October 2, 1967 (less than a year before Steinbeck's death on 10/20/68) and reads as follows: "Dear Friend: I am gratified at your / interest in my work. Right now I am / deep in a project, and you will understand / that to break concentration to answer the / many questions and requests that come / in every day would destroy any continuity / Thank you for your letter. I am / sorry to have to take this unsatisfactory / means of acknowledging it. / yours, / John Steinbeck". A very nice and intriguing letter from John Steinbeck mentioning an unspecified "project" that seemingly was occupying virtually all of his time and energy, as well as a copy of the letter to Steinbeck from his adoring fan. During the last years of his life (after the publication of "The Winter of Our Discontent" in 1961, and his reception of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1962) Steinbeck had ceased publishing Fiction and the note does not reveal the nature of the all-consuming project then occupying Steinbeck's time and energy. A very nice AUTOGRAPH (POSTCARD) LETTER SIGNED BY JOHN STEINBECK, TOGETHER WITH the addressee's carbon copy of her adoring fan letter to Steinbeck which generated the above-described post card, the text of which letter expresses sentiments held my many Steinbeck fans. [We see such notes from Steinbeck once in a while, but never have we seen one with the text of the letter to which Steinbeck responded.] An excellent Steinbeck ephemeral item, WRITTEN IN STEINBECK'S HAND AND SIGNED BY HIM.
