        We Have Ways Of Making You Laugh: Episodes 5, 6, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12

Np [London Weekend Television], London 1968 - One rehearsal script (Episode 5) and six camera scripts, secured either with staples or split pins at top left. Title page missing from Episode 8, all a little dusty and edgeworn. Very good copies. First editions. We Have Ways Of Making You Laugh was the first programme to be broadcast by London Weekend Television -- except it wasn't. Industrial action taken by technical staff during what should have been its live broadcast meant that it has the unique distinction of being the only television show ever to be watched by literally no-one. The cast were only told that the plug had been pulled once they'd finished performing the show: producer Humphrey Barclay explained to Eric Idle that '.we didn't want you to stop in case they put the plugs back in.' The industrial action also wiped out the next two weeks. This, coupled with the fact that the boast of the show's title was not backed up by the content of the show's scripts, ensured that We Have Ways Of Making You Laugh was stillborn. Today, if it's remembered at all it's for the animation sequences by Terry Gilliam who, the following year, would give Monty Python's Flying Circus its house style. These scripts, seven of the nine broadcast, contain occasional markings and scribbles (the rehearsal script, predictably, is annotated more extensively), but are for the most part 'clean'. Very scarce.

        Seven Letters

1968 - A collection of early correspondence from Nobel Prize-winning playwright Harold Pinter to noted British theatre director James Roose-Evans. The letters consist of four TLS, two ALS and one TPcS, dated between 1960-1968 and all boldly signed, "Harold." All but the postcard are folded from mailing with scattered light wear, overall near fine. Also laid in is a program for, *Two Plays by Harold Pinter: The Dumb Waiter and The Room*. Roose-Evans directed the debut performance of Pinter's *The Dumb Waiter* as part of a double bill with *The Room* on March 8, 1960 at The Hampstead Theatre Club, which he had founded the previous year. He and Pinter remained friends after the production and these letters correspond with Pinter's early success and growing popularity. They are light and collegial, with several references to Pinter's breakout play, *The Caretaker*, which, according to one letter, Roose-Evans was one of the first to read. A charming collection of early letters from one of the most important playwrights of the 20th Century at the start of his career. Further details available upon request.

        Slouching Towards Bethlehem

New York: Farrar, Straus and Giroux, 1968. First edition of what many consider her magnum opus. Octav, original half cloth. Some light toning to the boards, else a fine copy in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear to the spine. Signed by the author on the title page. Upon its publication in 1968, Slouching Towards Bethlehem confirmed Joan Didion as one of the most prominent writers on the literary scene. "In her portraits of people," The New York Times Book Review wrote, "Didion is not out to expose but to understand, and she shows us actors and millionaires, doomed brides and naïve acid-trippers, left-wing ideologues and snobs of the Hawaiian aristocracy in a way that makes them neither villainous nor glamorous, but alive and botched and often mournfully beautiful. . . . A rare display of some of the best prose written today in this country.

'the best movie [never] made': two typed letters by Stanley Kubrick

Borehamwood: Unpublished, 1968 Book. Very Good. No Binding. Signed by Author(s). 2 typed letters by Stanley Kubrick, 5th August, 1968 and 3rd September 1968 on Kubrick's headed notepaper, sent from 'MGM Studios Borehamwood Herts.' to Andrew Birkin, 19 Rue August Vacquerie in Paris. Both letters date from the period a few months after the release of 2001 when Kubrick immersed himself in research and preparation for an unrealised large scale film based on the life of Napoleon Bonaparte. Kubrick writes to Andrew Birkin, brother of Jane Birkin, and his assistant director on 2001 who was then acting as location scout and also assistant director on the Napoleon project. In the first letter of 5th August Kubrick references Lucien Rousselot's 'Series of paintings of the French Army'. In typically precise Kubrick fashion he indicates nearly 50 individual paintings requesting that Birkin 'check and let me know whether there are any other numbers in this Series which pertain to the Napoleonic Period.' In answer to this request Birkin has annotated the letter in pencil with a further fifty numbers of paintings that fulfil Kubrick's criteria. The letter is signed 'Stanley' in black ink. In the second letter of 3rd September Kubrick requests that Andrew 'purchase and mark a map of Paris and its environs' showing the location of key landmarks that played as role in Napoleon's story 'and anywhere else that you are shooting.' This appears to be urgent as Kubrick urges him to 'Send this to me as soon as you do this. This letter is signed simply 'S.' Both letters have old folds and a little foxing - about very good in condition. The prohibitive cost of location filming and the failure of similar films in the early 1970s meant that Kubrick's Napoleon project remained unfulfilled although the director claimed that he would have created 'the best movie ever made'. Kubrick's letters are scarce on the open market..

TO HEAL AND TO BUILD: The Programs of President Lyndon B. Johnson

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. 8vo. Cloth. Fine in near fine jacket. Jacket has touches rubbing, wear at edges. Small crease to front flap. Unclipped. INSCRIBED by Lady Bird Johnson and to Barbara and Harold Saunders: "For Barbara and Harold Saunders / with our appreciation and / warm wishes - / Lady Bird Johnson / Christmas 1968." Additionally SIGNED by President Johnson. Some smudging to LBJ's signature. Harold Saunders was a member of the National Security Council staff from 1961 through Johnson's tenure as President. He subsequently served as Assistant Secretary of State for Near East Affairs from 1978 to 1981 and was intrumental in both the Camp David Accords as well as the Iranian hostage crisis. Johnson was something of a reluctant signer and books genuinely inscribed by him are uncommon, with many secretarial examples misidentified. A warm association.

The Journals of Captain James Cook on his Voyages of Discovery Edited from the Original Manuscripts by J.C. Beaglehole

Beaglehole's classic edition of Cook's original manuscript journals, originally published by the Hakluyt Society, has for too long been out of print. The text of the journals provides the reliable and authoritative narrative of Cook's three voyages, and its republication has been as warmly welcomed as was the original edition when it appeared in 1968. Journals of Captain James Cook. Four volumes, large octavo (234 x 156 mm.), and portfolio (377 x 248 mm.), over 4000 pages, maps and illustrations; 68 charts and views in a separate portfolio; bound in cloth. The substantial volumes contain Cook's own day-by-day descriptions of his three great voyages of discovery; introductions and detailed notes accompany the texts, providing necessary identifications and references, and giving additional information from other sources supplementing Cook's account. More extended extracts from the journals of Cook's shipmates are printed as appendices. A separate portfolio contains the manuscript charts and views drawn by Cook and his officers, which he regarded as an essential complement to his Journals. This is an essential source for the historian or voyage-enthusiast: Beaglehole's monumental work of scholarship stands as one of the greatest achievements in voyage history.
