Eigenh. Brief mit U.

      O. O., 10. April 1968.. 2 SS. Gr.-4to. Liniertes Papier.. [ ]"e;.

        The Boys in the Band

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux. (1968). First. First edition. A small stain to the bottom of the boards and text block, thus about very good in good dustwrapper with scrapes along the top of the front panel. Full-page Inscription from Crowley to the actress Ruth Ford: "Algonquin NYC 1/12/69, Ruth, I'm so glad that I am lucky enough to have found you. It's such a shame to think that there will be, and are some, who'll miss you and never even know how they've been cheated. With gratitude and with my love, Mart." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98.The first successful play to revolve entirely around the gay lifestyle. Basis for the 1970 William Friedkin film. A book seldom found signed, we've never seen one with a better inscription. A wonderful inscription and nice association. .

        The Woman in White.

      c. 1968 - Sheet size: 138 × 185 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink on wove paper. A white-coated "lollipop lady" sees two children safely across the road. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.

I Never Sang For My Father

Random House, New York 1968 - First edition. Fine in an attractive, very good plus dustwrapper with a number of unobtrusive tears. A touching play, about a grown man faced with caring for his elderly father, which featured Hal Holbrook on stage and was made into the Gil Cates film starring Melvyn Douglas and Gene Hackman. This copy Inscribed by both Cates and Anderson to an investor in the play (Cates also produced the play, and was one of the dedicatees of the book): "9/3/68. Dear William -- Thanks for investing in 'Father.' Best, Gil." And beneath this: "And I thank you too -- Robert Anderson." We hope William enjoyed the book, as the play lost its entire $240,000 investment. Cates is also well known for his many years producing the Academy Awards telecasts. See this book in 3D on our site. A very sharp clean set, with no previous ownership markings, foxing, stains or other defects. ¶ Still the finest of fantasies. "With bookshop racks tottering under tales of polystyrene princesses and battery-powered swordsmen, the tough, clear vision of a Le Guin is the sort of magic the genre needs" - Cawthorn & Moorcock , FANTASY : The 100 Best Books (1988).

Alain Resnais, Or The Theme Of Time

Doubleday, New York 1968 - 8vo, pp. 167. Original illustrated paper wrappers. Edges and spine worn, but a very good copy. Illustrated throughout. First edition. JOSEPH LOSEY'S COPY, WITH HIS OWNERSHIP INSCRIPTION: 'Joseph Losey, Hanover, N. H. '70.' Additional underlinings and highlightings, presumably in Losey's hand, mostly to the opening chapters of the text. The McCarthy/HUAC witch-hunt saw Losey hounded out of the United States in the 1950s and, to his huge regret, never made another film in his home country again. Professionally, though, it was the making of him. In collaboration with Harold Pinter, Losey made three of the key British films of the 1960s: The Servant, Accident and The Go-Between. The two men also worked closely together on an adaptation of Proust's A La Recherche Du Temps Perdu, but although the script was later published the film remained unmade. Losey shared both a political philosophy and a cinema aesthetic with Alain Resnais: Losey's 1978 film Les Routes Du Sud is a sequel to the novel La Guerre Est Finie, filmed by Resnais in 1966. Both starred Yves Montand. A wonderful association copy linking two of the great auteurs of the mid-twentieth century.

Nippon Gekijo Shashincho -- Japan, A Photo Theatre - signed by both Hosoe and Moriyama in 1969

Muromachi-Shobo 1968 - Moriyama's first commercially published work, from 1968. This copy is signed by Moriyama, together with his mentor Hosoe, and dated Jan. 10, 1969. The book itself is in good condition, with some fading to spine, as is typical for this title, but no other major issues. The fragile slipcase has one nick on the obverse, otherwise no major issues. Also includes original postcard insert. Needless to say, a copy with a contemporaneous signature by Moriyama, with Hosoe, is rare and very desirable. Please feel free to contact me with any questions. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Soft Cover]
