Budme Pevni! Socialismus ano Okupace Ne!! [We Are United! Socialism Yes - Occupation No!]

[Prague: 1968]. An iconic image from the 1968 Soviet invasion of of Czechoslovakia. The producers of such works, operating in haste and secrecy, intended them for immediate wheat-pasting onto walls (whereafter the occupying Soviet forces would have done their best to ensure an extremely ephemeral survival time), and thus paid scant attention to paper quality or production values. As a result they are now exceptionally uncommon. This example well-preserved, albeit printed on what appears to have been a stray piece of newsprint. Original silk-screened poster, 33-1/2" x 27-1/2" (at largest dimension). Printed in black ink on newsprint. Borders irregular; archivally conserved on tissue-paper backing; archivally hinged to acid-free backer and framed. Slight browning; few mended tears at edges; Very Good / B+.

In Die Festo Natalis, Et Circuncisionis Christi, Sapphicum Alphabeticum.

(Milan) Officina Bodoni 1968 - Oblong 12mo. (14)ff. From an edition of 80 copies, this is one of forty printed for André Jammes, the French antiquarian bookseller. With a New Year's greeting inscribed on the first free endpaper from Jammes and his family. A beautifully-printed Christmas alphabet book with red calligraphic initials on each page. These elaborate initials were derived from a 1523 writing book by Ludovico Vicentino Degli Arrighi, an influential Italian bookseller, papal scribe, and later, typographer. Vicentino admired italic script and wrote an entire work about it; fittingly, this book is set entirely in Arrighi-Vicenza italic. The text is derived from a Christmas hymn and is represented in the original Latin. Extremely fine in paper-covered boards that look like vellum, in original brown card slipcase.         The Booster. September 1937–Easter 1939.

New York and London: Johnson Reprint Corporation, 1968 - Octavo. Original oatmeal cloth, titles to upper board in brown and to spine gilt on a brown ground, brown endpapers. With the plain paper dust jacket. A fine copy in the unprinted dust jacket with the title written in ink on the spine. First edition in book form. From a total edition of 500 copies this is one of 100 copies signed by Miller, Durrell, and Perles. The story of The Booster is a great one. Originally the in-house organ of a golf club based near Paris the unsuspecting members were initially delighted to have three more or less established writers take over its editorship. Early issues retain many of the adverts for waterproof clothing etc. However the three tyros couldn't help themselves with the content and the members revolted. Consequently the final three issues were released under the name Delta. This signed issue of the facsimile is scarce and most desirable. It is also one of the very few chances to see Miller's and Durrell's signatures in such close proximity. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

For the Sake of a Single Verse

New York Atelier Mourlot 1968 - With Twenty-four Lithographs, Each Signed by Shahn SHAHN, Ben, [artist]. RILKE, Rainer Maria. For the Sake of a Single Verse. New York: Atelier Mourlot, 1968. First edition. One of 200 copies, signed by Shahn out of a total edition of 950. This being number eighteen. Complete with twenty-four lithographs, on Richard de Bas hand-made paper, each signed by the artist. Large folio. Lithographs are loose as issued. Housed in a half vellum over cloth clamshell. Clamshell is embossed on the front with an image of a hand with a pen. Spine of the clamshell lettered in gilt. A fine copy. "I had now long ago found in Rilke the passage that came to mean so much to me. He was a writer about the processes of art who was not telling me what to do, what to think, how to paint. No; he was too engrossed in his own discoveries. He was sharing with me the doubts and the hesitations of art, the probings, the slow emergence of forms. His every line of writing was art, and yet such art was inseparable from its life content. No manifesto could ever tell me more clearly than this one paragraph of Rilke's that art is an emanation from a person; that it is shaped and formed out of the shape and form of that person. In being so acutely personal to him it achieves also a rare universality. Rilke is speaking, (is he not?) to the innermost recesses of the consciousness, an area in which we spend so much of our time and expend so much of our feeling, and yet an area that is so remote from communication with our fellow-beings, an area that is, unhappily, increasingly remote from the reaches of art. " (From the Afterward by Ben Shahn). HBS 66038. $13,500 [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
