        The Promise of Space

New York: Harper & Row. (1968). Early reprint. Tiny check mark on the front fly, else fine in fine dustwrapper. Inscribed Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian - my second Book-of-the-Month Clubber! (This is where I came in in 1952...) All the best, Arthur. 24 Nov '68". Despite the inscription, this isn't the book club edition. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this book in which Clarke reviews the advances in space travel that he discussed in his previous book, The Exploration of Space. .

Touching Autograph letter signed by David Ben-Gurion about Bar Mitzvah celebrations for orphans of soldiers killed in the recent Six-Day War

"Autograph letter signed ""David Ben-Gurion"", in Hebrew, one page, 8vo, February 28, 1968, addressed to Shifra Golombian (a war widow). Ben-Gurion praises the Habad Youth initiative to make a Bar Mitzvah ceremony to orphans of soldiers who were killed in the Six-Days war only a year earlier. He regretfully rejects her invitation to take part in the ceremony due to previous engagements and acknowledges her pain and grief. A full translation is included. Ben-Gurion was among the founders of Mapai which governed Israel during the first three decades of its existence. He stepped down as Prime Minister, on personal grounds (as he explained) in 1963, and, in fact, nominated Levi Eshkol to be his successor. One year later a rivalry developed between the two on the issue of the Lavon Affair. Ben-Gurion broke with the party in June 1965 over Eshkol's handling of the Lavon affair and formed a new party, Rafi which won ten seats in the Knesset. As tensions loomed before the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967, Ben-Gurion strongly urged that Israel must have a Great Power on its side. After the war ended with large Israeli territorial gains, Ben-Gurion argued that Israel should not keep any territorial gains of the Six-Day War, other than a united Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. In 1968, when Rafi merged with Mapai to form the Alignment, Ben-Gurion refused to reconcile with his old party due to it postponing plans to reform the electoral system (Ben-Gurion wanted to see a constituency-based system introduced to replace the chaotic proportional representation method). He formed another new party, the National List, which won four seats in the 1969 election. Small paper loss at the blank top edge, handling marks, still about fine."

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 separate large 8vo sheets, in pencil, n.p. n.d., but ca 1968

Very Good. To Harry Kevis, VP of United States Automotive, Inc., Baker writes that his phone is disconnected and he hardly works due to, "fear on the part of would be brokers or club owners...." He continues in relation to Kevis's letter to him included. "I was sort of shocked to learn of your having resigned your commission...You don't say too much about this battery chemical but it sounds very interesting. I don't suppose you could use a West Coast Distributorship (naturally with ole chet as chief in command)...I'd really like to have something else to fall back on...I'm still playing...at Donte's in N. Hollywood...you can take Nick's spot as yet I haven't let him in on it...." He encourages Kevis to think about a distributorship run by Baker, sends regards from his family and signs, "Ciao, Chet." The letter is accompanied by the original TLS by Harry Kevis dated March 26, 1968 and a copy of a TLS from Harry Kevis indicating he wil be in Los Angeles on April 4, won't be able to play but will visit Donte's. A heroin addict, Baker was severely beaten later in 1968, the year of this letter, stopped playing until he could rehabilitate his mouth, eventually moved to New York, then played in Europe until his death. He remains a jazz legend.

        OUTER DARK

New York: Random House, 1968. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. The book has a small owner's name on the front endpaper, otherwise clean, sharp and unread. In a Fine, price-clipped dust jacket with just a few spots where the black jacket is rubbed at the spine ends. A lovely copy of the book. Cormac McCarthy's second novel, published in 1968, "Outer Dark" follows the story of a brother and sister who commit incest - and their subsequent wanderings. His first book, "The Orchard Keeper," had won the 1966 William Faulkner Foundation for notable first novel and McCarthy is currently considered by critic Harold Bloom as one of the four greatest American novel writers working today. "There is not a page of this novel which does not depict swift and significant action. Nor does Mr. McCarthy waste a single word on his character's thoughts. With total objectivity he describes what they do and records their speech. Such discipline comes not only from mastery over words but from an understanding wise enough and compassionate enough to dare tell so abysmally dark a story." (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        The American Cinema (First Edition)

E.P. Dutton, New York 1968 - First Edition, one of 1500 copies printed. "The American Cinema" introduced auteur theory to America when it was published in 1968, and sparked a long and famous debate between Sarris and Pauline Kael. Auteur theory sees a film director (rather than the producer, studio, screenwriters, or actors) as the author of a film, and was one of the founding principles used by the directors in the French New Wave (Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rohmer, et al). Using the new thinking in this book, Sarris re-evaluated the pantheon of important American directors who had made films between 1929 and 1968. Fine in an about Fine dust jacket. A touch of offsetting to the front endpapers, owner initials on the front endpaper, and only the most minute wear to the jacket. Extremely uncommon in this condition.         The Instant Enemy

NY: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1968. "...the finest series of detective novels ever written by an American." - NY Times. "'The Instant Enemy' is the quintessential Ross Macdonald novel. Why? Because it incorporates so many of the elements Macdonald held near and dear to his heart. These include: Family tragedies that repeat themselves over the generations. Unexpected familial relationships between characters. A young person's journey to claim a birthright unfairly denied. The notion that one's destiny is largely determined at birth, if not before. The book starts out with Lew Archer being summoned to the Woodland Hills home of Keith Sebastian and his wife Bernice. Their 17 year old daughter has run away and they want Archer to find her without involving the police. Archer soon learns that the girl is traveling in the company of a 19 year old delinquent named Davy Spanner. What's more, it appears that they are planning to commit a very serious crime against Sebastian's boss, the fabulously wealthy oilman Stephen Hackett.
