The Gospel Singer - SIGNED

Morrow, New York 1968 - Very good or better in a like jacket. Inscribed and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "Keep your hat on and stay in a crouch. It's the only way to beat the world. Harry Crews. 2/28/68 ( date of publication), Ft Lauderdale, Fla.". Both the jacket and volume have evidence of limited water damage. On the book itself, the blue from the endpapers has bled a bit to the adjoining white endpapers, and the first couple of pages are slightly warped. Both boards are slightly discolored and warped, and there are small ink smudges at the top of both boards. On the jacket the water mark is primarily only visible from the verso, although the rear panel has an area of tone. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

London: Victor Gollancz Ltd,. 1968. Octavo,. boards.. A fine copy in fine dust jacket with just a touch of dust soiling and. clipped price. This book is rarely found signed or inscribed by. Harness. (#106922). First edition. Brief signed inscription by Harness to one of his editors. "A fine space opera ..." - Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-495. "His first two novels, FLIGHT INTO YESTERDAY (1953) and THE RING OF RITORNEL (1968), feature cycles in time and Heroes who undergo transcendental metamorphoses in order to manipulate their own destinies and that of the human race; both novels are shamelessly melodramatic, and have an obvious kinship with the work of A E van Vogt." - SFE (online). "This 'comeback' novel (its author's first book in fifteen years) is a rather old-fashioned but none the less impressive galactic empire story -- complexly plotted, with Harness's characteristic time themes thrown in." - Pringle, The Ultimate Guide to Science Fiction, second edition (1995), pp. 305-6. "Among the most stylish modern space operas." - Brian Stableford.

Oh, What a Lovely War, Screenplay from the original stageplay.

Accord Productions Ltd., 1968. - Folio. 1st and only edition. Large format, foolscap, wrappers. Wrappers a little creased and with two old staple marks. Loosely inserted are two signed typed letters and one signed autograph letter from Len Deighton to Liz and Derek Jewell. Jewell [1927 - 1985] was a writer, broadcaster, critic and publishing director of Time Newspapers. Deighton was a friend and they socialised regularly. The autograph letter relates to an advert that Deighton was proposing to write for American Express. The script is, in my experience, the rarest item in Deighton's canon. He asked for his name to be removed from the final screen credits for Richard Attenborough's film, a decision he later described as childish. I also have a number of inscribed books from Deighton to Liz and Derek Jewell - please enquire. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

        Berliner Goldschmiede. Daten-Werke-Zeichen.

3 ms. Briefe mit eigenh. U.

Locarno-Monti, 1966-1968. - Zusammen 3 SS. 4to. An Gerhard Bormann, Oberstaatsanwalt i. Briefkopf.

A touching play, about a grown man faced with caring for his elderly father, which featured Hal Holbrook on stage and was made into the Gil Cates film starring Melvyn Douglas and Gene Hackman. This copy Inscribed by both Cates and Anderson to an investor in the play (Cates also produced the play, and was one of the dedicatees of the book): "9/3/68. O. O., 10. April 1968.. 2 SS. Gr.-4to. Liniertes Papier.. [ ]"e;.

        The Boys in the Band

New York: Farrar Straus Giroux. (1968). First. First edition. A small stain to the bottom of the boards and text block, thus about very good in good dustwrapper with scrapes along the top of the front panel. Full-page Inscription from Crowley to the actress Ruth Ford: "Algonquin NYC 1/12/69, Ruth, I'm so glad that I am lucky enough to have found you. It's such a shame to think that there will be, and are some, who'll miss you and never even know how they've been cheated. With gratitude and with my love, Mart." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98.The first successful play to revolve entirely around the gay lifestyle. Basis for the 1970 William Friedkin film. A book seldom found signed, we've never seen one with a better inscription. A wonderful inscription and nice association. .

        The Woman in White.

      c. 1968 - Sheet size: 138 × 185 mm. Stamped on verso for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Pen and ink on wove paper. A white-coated "lollipop lady" sees two children safely across the road. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
