        OUTER DARK

New York: Random House, 1968. First edition. Fine/Fine. A Fine copy of the book in like dust jacket. The book has a small owner's name on the front endpaper, otherwise clean, sharp and unread. In a Fine, price-clipped dust jacket with just a few spots where the black jacket is rubbed at the spine ends. A lovely copy of the book. Cormac McCarthy's second novel, published in 1968, "Outer Dark" follows the story of a brother and sister who commit incest - and their subsequent wanderings. His first book, "The Orchard Keeper," had won the 1966 William Faulkner Foundation for notable first novel and McCarthy is currently considered by critic Harold Bloom as one of the four greatest American novel writers working today. "There is not a page of this novel which does not depict swift and significant action. Nor does Mr. McCarthy waste a single word on his character's thoughts. With total objectivity he describes what they do and records their speech. Such discipline comes not only from mastery over words but from an understanding wise enough and compassionate enough to dare tell so abysmally dark a story." (Contemporary New York Times review). Fine in Fine. dust jacket.

        The American Cinema (First Edition)

E.P. Dutton, New York 1968 - First Edition, one of 1500 copies printed. "The American Cinema" introduced auteur theory to America when it was published in 1968, and sparked a long and famous debate between Sarris and Pauline Kael. Auteur theory sees a film director (rather than the producer, studio, screenwriters, or actors) as the author of a film, and was one of the founding principles used by the directors in the French New Wave (Truffaut, Godard, Chabrol, Rohmer, et al). Using the new thinking in this book, Sarris re-evaluated the pantheon of important American directors who had made films between 1929 and 1968. Fine in an about Fine dust jacket. A touch of offsetting to the front endpapers, owner initials on the front endpaper, and only the most minute wear to the jacket. Extremely uncommon in this condition.         The Instant Enemy

NY: Alfred A. Knopf, Inc., 1968. "...the finest series of detective novels ever written by an American." - NY Times. "'The Instant Enemy' is the quintessential Ross Macdonald novel. Why? Because it incorporates so many of the elements Macdonald held near and dear to his heart. These include: Family tragedies that repeat themselves over the generations. Unexpected familial relationships between characters. A young person's journey to claim a birthright unfairly denied. The notion that one's destiny is largely determined at birth, if not before. The book starts out with Lew Archer being summoned to the Woodland Hills home of Keith Sebastian and his wife Bernice. Their 17 year old daughter has run away and they want Archer to find her without involving the police. Archer soon learns that the girl is traveling in the company of a 19 year old delinquent named Davy Spanner. What's more, it appears that they are planning to commit a very serious crime against Sebastian's boss, the fabulously wealthy oilman Stephen Hackett.         La Campagne Electorale Commence / Notre Lutte Continue

[Paris: May, 1968]. Unique, hand-lettered poster calling on workers to boycott the 1968 General Elections, which the artist characterizes as a Gaullist plot to "Shatter the May Workers' Movement". The poster goes on to say, "...the factory workers are not fooled by the crumbs thrown them by the bosses, nor by the masquerade of the elections...the workers have experienced Democracy [...] free speech in the factory [...] they know that it's possible to create a national list of demands, they know that it's possible to unite under this list the entire population [...] the Electoral battle is not the people's struggle, it's the bourgeoisie's attempt to suffocate the voice of the people in the voting booth!" Unattributed to a specific hand, but signed at base "Mouvement de Soutien des Luttes du Peuple" [Movement in Support of the People's Struggle], a short-lived offshoot of the Marxist student organization Union des Jeunesses Communistes Marxistes-Léninistes, organized in May, 1968 by the leftist intellectual, philosopher and novelist Guy Lardreau. A remarkable survival. Original hand-lettered poster, ca 39" x 27". Lettered in red and black on white paper. Removed from a wall, with layers of paper and wheatpaste adhered to verso; overall wrinkling, a few closed tears, but overall in a remarkable state of preservation, with no losses or major flaws. Archivally hinged to acid-free backing, in gallery frame.

Charles Bukowski & Tom Russell Archive

[1968-2011]. This collection of fifty items contains the correspondence between the two outsiders, as well as Bukowski ephemera, photographs, art and a recording. The center of this archive are the letters back and forth between the two, that Russell originally intended to be a published interview. These unpublished interviews contain classic Bukowski. Complete inventory available upon request. Tom Russell on meeting Charles Bukowski: ?"In 1966 or so I was hanging out in McCarthur Park in Los Angeles and ran into a journalist [Bob Garcia] who wrote for the underground newspaper "Open City." He told me of this wild, drunk writer they had who worked at the Post Office - Bukowski. He started to send me all the issues of the paper with Buk's column "Notes of a Dirty Old Man." I loved them. Kept them all. After the newspaper closed down nobody could find the originals and no one had all the copies….except me. Somehow Bukowski reached out to me, through a friend, and I sent him all the columns….which became a book published by City Lights…."Notes of a Dirty Old Man." Buk and I struck up a correspondence which lasted twenty years almost….he wrote me letters with little drawings on them and I interviewed him for a Norwegian newspaper: Beat. All the is included in the papers….and more. I later ran into him on Hollywood and Vine in 1975. He was buying a porno newspaper on the street. His girlfriend Linda was with him but he did not introduce her…I gave him my first LP "Ring of Bone." Ten minutes later he raced up to us in a VW bug, on the Hollywood Freeway, rolled down his window, and yelled, pointing at her…"This is Linda!" Evidently she'd given him hell for not introducing her….that's some of the story! Tom Russell 2013?"

No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories

New York: Harper and Row. (1968). First. First American edition. Fine in fine, first issue dustwrapper with virtually no rubbing. The Nobel Prize-winning author's first book published in the United States. Excessive rubbing seems endemic to this title -- this is a superior copy. The title story was the basis for a 1999 film starring Salma Hayek. .

IN A NARROW GRAVE ESSAYS ON TEXAS

The Encino Press, 1968., 1968. First edition, first (suppressed) printing. 8vo. Cloth, titles on a paper label on spine, xviii, 177 pp., preface, introduction, bibliography. The quite elusive "skycrapers" edition, with the ripe harvest of typos throughout the text. Whaley 38 says, "Examples of errors: p. 56, line 2 - 'in in'; p. 105, paragraph 2, sixth line reads 'skycrapers' instead of 'skyscrapers'; p. 134, paragraph 2, sixth line is a repeat of third line." There are also other errors including line one of last paragraph of front flap which reads "head" instead of "heard." Except for review copies, copies sent to bookshops before the errors were discovered (chiefly to local bookshops), and a handful retained by the publisher to sell towards his retirement, the bulk of the edition was buried in a well behind the old Encino offices. It has been established that the totality of copies which eluded destruction, through one device or another, numbered somewhat less than 100. Those copies which were sent out as review copies are by far the least common. Fine in dust jacket.

IN A NARROW GRAVE: Essays on Texas.

Encino Press,, Austin: 1968 - First edition, second issue with "skyscrapers" p.105:12 versus "skycrapers" in the first issue. Reportedly all but 15 of the first issue were destroyed, although we think a higher number, maybe 30 to 50 actually exist. Essays on Texas, mainly west Texas where the author grew up. We've always liked this first book of essays which starts with "Here's HUD in Your Eye." We think the author is a very good essayist and would like to see more. Fine in dust jacket with tiny chips on corners and bottom spine edge, spine just barely rubbed and a few faint creases, otherwise close to fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
