        1,2,3 To The Zoo.

The World Publishing Company, Cleveland and New York 1968 - First edition. Thin quarto, original cloth. Signed by Eric Carle on the title page. Fine in near fine price-clipped dust jacket with a small chip on the front panel, and wear at the spine ends. The artist's first solely authored and original picture book. 1,2,3 To the Zoo features a band of animals traveling to the zoo by train. Children can count out the members of each group as they pass by, car by car. Carle's colorful trademark collage art makes this wordless counting book a fun and educational way to put children on the right track to numerical comprehension. Without any words at all, Carle is able to relate a masterful tale that captures the essences of zoology and mathematics in such a way where even a child can grasp the importance of these disciplines.         Just 3 1/2 weeks after marrying Aristotle Onassis, from the Island of Scorpios, Greece, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis writes to Nicholas Katzenbach who had been Deputy Attorney General while JFK was President

[Scorpios, Greece] "Autograph Letter Signed ?love Jackie,? 1 page, 8? x 8?. [Scorpios Island, Greece, November 14, 1968]. On rare pictorial ?On Board S/Y Christina? stationery. To Nick [Nicholas deB. Katzenbach, Under Secretary of State ]. Flaws at edges. Photocopy of original postmarked envelope is present. In full, ?Dear Nick ?" I do thank you so much for your letter ?" You don?t know how much it touched me to hear from you ?" thank you dear Nick.? On October 20, 1968, just 3 1/2 weeks earlier, Jacqueline Kennedy had married Aristotle Onassis, a wealthy Greek shipping magnate, who was able to provide the privacy and security she sought for herself and her children. The wedding took place on Skorpios, Onassis?s private Greek island in the Ionian Sea. Katzenbach?s Washington Post obituary described him as ?an unflappable lawyer who served as the Kennedy brothers? emissary to the South during the violent confrontations over racial segregation in the early 1960s and who later was an architect of landmark civil rights laws under President Johnson ... He wrote a key midnight brief during the Cuban missile crisis, challenged FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover over the wiretapping of civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., conceived of the Warren Commission to investigate President John F. Kennedy?s assassination, and argued with some of the most powerful federal officials over how to extricate the country from the Vietnam War ...? When Robert F. Kennedy resigned as Attorney General to run for the U.S. Senate in 1964, he was succeeded by his Deputy Attorney General, Nicholas Katzenbach (1922-2012). In 1966, Katzenbach was appointed Under Secretary of State (1966-1969)."

        The Promise of Space

New York: Harper & Row. (1968). Early reprint. Tiny check mark on the front fly, else fine in fine dustwrapper. Inscribed Arthur C. Clarke to his protege, one-time secretary, and longtime friend Ian Macauley; "To Ian - my second Book-of-the-Month Clubber! (This is where I came in in 1952...) All the best, Arthur. 24 Nov '68". Despite the inscription, this isn't the book club edition. Macauley was the dedicatee of Clarke's first published hardcover novel, Islands in the Sky, and was an award-winning New York Times journalist. He also edited Clarke's book of collected essays, Greetings, Carbon-Based Bipeds! (2000). Clarke wrote the last chapter of Childhood End, while visiting Macauley in Atlanta, where he was reportedly greatly influenced by their discussions. A nice association copy of this book in which Clarke reviews the advances in space travel that he discussed in his previous book, The Exploration of Space. .

Touching Autograph letter signed by David Ben-Gurion about Bar Mitzvah celebrations for orphans of soldiers killed in the recent Six-Day War

"Autograph letter signed ""David Ben-Gurion"", in Hebrew, one page, 8vo, February 28, 1968, addressed to Shifra Golombian (a war widow). Ben-Gurion praises the Habad Youth initiative to make a Bar Mitzvah ceremony to orphans of soldiers who were killed in the Six-Days war only a year earlier. He regretfully rejects her invitation to take part in the ceremony due to previous engagements and acknowledges her pain and grief. A full translation is included. Ben-Gurion was among the founders of Mapai which governed Israel during the first three decades of its existence. He stepped down as Prime Minister, on personal grounds (as he explained) in 1963, and, in fact, nominated Levi Eshkol to be his successor. One year later a rivalry developed between the two on the issue of the Lavon Affair. Ben-Gurion broke with the party in June 1965 over Eshkol's handling of the Lavon affair and formed a new party, Rafi which won ten seats in the Knesset. As tensions loomed before the outbreak of the Six-Day War in 1967, Ben-Gurion strongly urged that Israel must have a Great Power on its side. After the war ended with large Israeli territorial gains, Ben-Gurion argued that Israel should not keep any territorial gains of the Six-Day War, other than a united Jerusalem and the Golan Heights. In 1968, when Rafi merged with Mapai to form the Alignment, Ben-Gurion refused to reconcile with his old party due to it postponing plans to reform the electoral system (Ben-Gurion wanted to see a constituency-based system introduced to replace the chaotic proportional representation method). He formed another new party, the National List, which won four seats in the 1969 election. Small paper loss at the blank top edge, handling marks, still about fine."

Autograph Letter Signed, 2 separate large 8vo sheets, in pencil, n.p. n.d., but ca 1968

Very Good. To Harry Kevis, VP of United States Automotive, Inc., Baker writes that his phone is disconnected and he hardly works due to, "fear on the part of would be brokers or club owners...." He continues in relation to Kevis's letter to him included. "I was sort of shocked to learn of your having resigned your commission...You don't say too much about this battery chemical but it sounds very interesting. I don't suppose you could use a West Coast Distributorship (naturally with ole chet as chief in command)...I'd really like to have something else to fall back on...I'm still playing...at Donte's in N. Hollywood...you can take Nick's spot as yet I haven't let him in on it...." He encourages Kevis to think about a distributorship run by Baker, sends regards from his family and signs, "Ciao, Chet." The letter is accompanied by the original TLS by Harry Kevis dated March 26, 1968 and a copy of a TLS from Harry Kevis indicating he wil be in Los Angeles on April 4, won't be able to play but will visit Donte's. A heroin addict, Baker was severely beaten later in 1968, the year of this letter, stopped playing until he could rehabilitate his mouth, eventually moved to New York, then played in Europe until his death. He remains a jazz legend.
