[Broadside]: Chicago Aug. 68 A Closed Convention in a Closed City S.D.S

[Student for a Democratic Society]. 1968. Broadside measuring 15.5" x 25" tipped on 16.75" x 25.75" art board. Moderate chips and tears to the margins with two long creases affecting the broadside and some dampstaining, very good. A poster for the 1968 Democratic Convention designed by A. J. Epstein for the progressive Sixties organization, Students for a Democratic Society, depicting the Sears Tower and Mayor Daly looming above protesters and National Guard soldiers. The student group founded in 1959 with origins in the student branch of the League for Industrial Democracy was headed by Tom Hayden who had organized a series of marches in major cities and universities across the county. The group became increasingly militant, eventually splintering into several organizations, most notorious of them the terrorist group, the Weather Underground, before disbanding in the early 1970s. This poster was made for the convention and handed out to protesters but few survived the ensuing citywide rioting, culminating with the circus-like trial of the Chicago Eight conspirators of which Hayden was one. OCLC locates only two copies: one in the Terry Southern Collection at The New York Public Library and another found at the Chicago History Museum. .

Archive of Anthony Hecht Materials [Signed 10X and Initialed 5X]

Anthony Hecht, Various publication dates, Book Condition: Very Good, First editionA quite scarce, and rare-to-the-market Anthony Hecht Archive, with each item being in Very Good or better condition, containing many items signed by Anthony Hecht, illustrating the inner workings of book publishing and providing an interesting insight into the business side of the great Poet's life. Anthony Hecht's poetry is noted for confronting the Twentieth Century's horrors, particularly those of World War II (in which Hecht fought) and the Holocaust, both of which were recurring themes in his work. Although his parents opposed his becoming a Poet, even going so far as to have family friend Theodor Geisel (Dr. Seuss) try to dissuade Hecht from his chosen career, Hecht, having been inspired by the works of Wallace Stevens, W. H. Auden, and T. S. Eliot, persevered, ultimately becoming one of the greatest Poets of his era and winning the 1968 Pulitzer Prize for Poetry for his second collection of verse, "The Hard Hours". Hecht also won the 1983 Bollingen Prize, the 1988 Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, the 1989 Aiken Taylor Award for Modern American Poetry, the 1997 Wallace Stevens Award, the 1999/2000 Frost Medal, the Tanning Prize, and The National Medal of Arts, as well as a number of other Awards and Fellowships. From 1982 - 1984, he served as the twenty-seventh United States Poet Laureate (officially Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry to the Library of Congress), placing him in the company of America's greatest Poets such as Robert Frost, Robert Penn Warren, William Carlos Williams, Stephen Spender, and others. The "Anthony Hecht Poetry Prize" is given annually in his honor. In spite of his stellar reputation as a Poet and the recognition he received for his work, this Archive reveals that revenues from his work were not sufficient to support Hecht and his young family. In consequence, Hecht derived most of his income from teaching at the University of Rochester and Hecht's signed letters contained herein are on University Letterhead. The Archive, from the file of Hecht's Literary Agent, Joan Daves, contains four checks (in rather low amounts) made payable to Hecht and representing revenue from his literary work, one of which is endorsed by Hecht, two of which are endorsed by Hecht and his wife Helen, and the fourth of which was deposited without endorsement; five typed letters signed (by Hecht), each dated 1972 or 1973, five contracts signed by Anthony Hecht and other parties; as well as copies of relevant letters, bios, and publicity information provided by Hecht. In the letters, Hecht discusses publishing efforts and plans for "Seven Against Thebes", including plans for a special edition of the work to be produced by Leonard Baskin at Ghenna Press, the birth of his son, the provision of publicity information, and retrieving the original manuscript and the master galleys of one of his works from Oxford University Press (the publication of which had been canceled as noted below). The original signed contracts are as follows: (i) contract with Atheneum dated "9/24/70" for the translation by Hecht and Helen Bacon of Aeschylus' "Seven Against Thebes" signed by Hecht, Bacon, and Atheneum; (ii) contract with Oxford University Press (OUP) dated October 20, 1972 signed by Hecht, Bacon, and OUP and initialed by Hecht and by Bacon at the bottom of 5 pages (all but the signature page where no initials were called for) -- stapled to which is an original letter on Atheneum letterhead from Alfred Knopf, Jr. reverting all rights granted Atheneum under the above-described 9/24/70 contract to Hecht and Bacon, signed by Alfred Knopf, Jr. and by Joan Daves, entered into so that Hecht and Bacon could enter a contract for the same work with "another publisher" (leading, of course to the foregoing OUP contract; (iii) contract with OUP dated July 17, 1973 for Oedipus At Colonus (a translation of Sophocles' work) signed by Hecht and by George Dimock as "Authors" and signed by OUP; (iv) Letter Agreement dated December 15, 1975 by and among Hecht, Dimock, and OUP mutually releasing each other from all obligations under the July 17, 1973 contract for Oedipus At Colonus together with an original letter signed from OUP to Joan Daves' Agency returning the original mutual release as well as copies of other relevant correspondence, and further including an additional original signed letter from OUP explaining that the project was canceled because Hecht, having found it impossible to work with Dimock given Dimock's interpretation of the Play, had requested the release ; (v) contract with OUP for Oedipus At Kolonus (a second try at the translation of the Sophocles Play) dated February 26, 1980 signed by Hecht and by William Arrowsmith as Author and signed by OUP. Thus we have a quite scarce Archive of Anthony Hecht materials including ten items signed by him, one of which also is initialed by him five times, yielding a total of 15 original Hecht evidences of his Agreement to, or statement of, various matters. The Archive provides an excellent look at Hecht's attempts to get his work published, some successful, some not, and illustrating both the low level of monetary reward won for such work and Hecht's persistence at it. A RARE ARCHIVE OF MATERIALS, MANY OF WHICH ARE SIGNED, RELATED TO ONE OF THE TWENTIETH CENTURY'S MOST NOTABLE POETS.

[Geographic Maps of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia].

[Washington & Jiddah, 1968-1982].. 21 sheets in full colour, each 101 x 103 to 88 x 63 cm approx., folded in original printed envelopes with individual titles. English and Arabic. Scale 1:500,000; relief shown by hachures and spot heights.. Complete collection of the detailed geographical maps ("B" series) of Saudi Arabia (but also covering Bahrain and Qatar) prepared by the U.S. Geological Survey and the Arabian American Oil Company under the joint sponsorship of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the U.S. Department of State. "Although the search for oil, gas and minerals was ultimately to drive geological survey work across the region [...], in its early years it was the need for water that was the catalyst for Saudi Arabia 's resource exploration. In 1944 King 'Abd al-'Aziz approached the United States for a technical expert who could assist with the identification and plotting of the kingdom's natural resources, particularly its groundwater reserves [...] By 1954 the Saudi Ministry of Finance, USGS and Aramco were working together to produce the first full series of geographic and geologic maps of the country. The first of their type in the Peninsula, these were published between 1960 and 1963 in both Arabic and English versions, and the information they contained formed the basis of subsequent Saudi national development plans. To this day, all modern maps of the kingdom trace their roots back to these first publications" (Parry). The surveyors divided the Peninsula into 21 quadrangular sections, numbered 200 through 220. Mixed copy conflated from both the U.S. and the Saudi-Arabian series, prefixed "I" and "GM", respectively. Well preserved. - James V. Parry, "Mapping Arabia", in: Saudi Aramco World 2004/1, p. 20ff.

ELECTRIC LADYLAND. The original album cover artwork for the U.S. issue of Jimi Hendrix's 1968 masterpiece

Los Angeles: Warner Brothers. 1968. The original album cover artwork for the U.S. issue of Jimi Hendrix's 1968 masterpiece, Electric Ladyland. Photo collage on board, ink on paper. Including the "mechanical" for an unreleased alternate version; two original type designs, hand drawn in ink; and a front & back cover slick and an inner gatefold stat of the released version. All of these were created by the Warner Bros. Records art department prior to the album release in 1968. Unique. The original artwork for the hand-lettered type is believed to have been drawn by Los Angeles designer John Van Hamersveld, and the mechanical laid out by the album's art director, Ed Thrasher. In the design and print process "mechanicals" were sent to the label's colour separator, and used to make film for the album cover printer. Provenance: In the mid 1970s the Warner Bros. art department hired a freelance art director to go through their archives and dispose of old files, to create space for newer projects. He was given permission to keep a number of pieces, and gifted these to a friend. Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request.         Night of January 16th. A Play. (Inscribed First Edition)

The World Publishing Company, New York and Cleveland 1968 - This copy inscribed by the author: "Carlton Smith - Cordially - Ayn Rand 11/9/69." Additionally, signed by her husband, Frank O'Connor, who appeared in one of the stage productions of this work. A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Book appears unread, but with the boards slightly flared. In a price-clipped, dust jacket with slight toning to the flap edges. Originally published in softcover in 1936, Rand was unhappy with several of the editorial changes. She produced this hardcover version, which she called the "final, definitive version."Ayn Rand's thrilling courtroom drama - where the audience members themselves are chosen to serve on the jury and deliver a verdict. The accused is secretary Karen Andre - who is supposed to have murdered her boss and lover, Bjorn Faulkner. After she witnessed The Trial of Mary Dugan, Rand decided she wanted to write a play based around a trial. The death of Swedish businessman Ivan Kreuger, who shot himself after a major Ponzi scheme of his was exposed, served as Rand's direct inspiration. "?well constructed, well enough written, admirably directed . and excellently acted." (Contemporary Commonweal review). Near Fine in Near Fine. dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]
