        In a Narrow Grave

Austin: The Encino Press, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition, first printing. Rare first issue with "skycrapers" for "skyscrapers" on page 105, line 12, among other typographical errors. The book was so rife with errors that McMurtry insisted it be withdrawn and reprinted. Only an estimated 12-50 copies are thought to have survived. Tidemarks to cloth and jacket, light lean to spine. Old price sticker to rear panel of jacket. An extremely rare first issue of McMurtry's first non-fiction book.

To Paint is to Love Again Including the text of Semblance of a Devoted Past

New York: Grossman Publishers, 1968. First Edition. Slipcased. Near Fine/Near Fine. Henry Miller. Presentation with Self Portrait by the Author-Artist in black ink: Signed & with "Selbst Bildnis" [Self Portrait] written; 4to (8 3/4" by 11 1/4"), color frontispiece by the author plus 19 of his illustrations in full color; khaki cloth boards with white and orange lettering; photographic endpapers of Miller painting; dust jacket (unclipped); navy blue woven cloth-covered slipcase (9 1/8" by 12"); 117 pages + [2] List of Exhibitions & Colophon. Very Fine copy of this personally inscribed and embellished volume summarizing the author-artist's "lifelong experience in painting." Henry Miller (1891-1980) was an American writer well known for his innovations and departures from existing literary forms. His semi-autobiographical novels blended character study, social criticism, philosophical reflection, explicit language, sex, surrealist free association and mysticism. His most significant works are Tropic of Cancer (1934), Tropic of Capricorn (1939), and The Rosy Crucifixion trilogy (1949?-59), all based on his artistic life in New York and Paris. Due to charges of being pornographic, Miller's novels were banned in the United States until 1961. Dedication in ink on the fly leaf: "To Pierre / from his 'some times' painter / friend / Henry Miller 27/1/72." Full page Self-Portrait by Henry Miller on the same fly-leaf in black ink and signed. In addition to his literary abilities, Miller created or copied many watercolor paintings--often of an avant garde nature-- and wrote books on this field. He was a close friend of the French painter Grégoire Michonze. This volume also contains a suite of letters Miller wrote to Emil Schnellock, preiously published privately in 1944. It is estimated that Miller painted 2,000 watercolors during his life, and that 50 or more major collections of Miller?'s paintings exist.[ The Harry Ransom Center at the University of Texas at Austin holds a selection of Miller's watercolors,[ as did the Henry Miller Museum of Art in machi City in Nagano, Japan, before closing in 2001.[ Miller's daughter Valentine placed some of her father's art for sale in 2005. Open and closed ends of slipcase have slight sunning. Dust jacket has a transparent protective sleeve and is Near Fine, except for a minor stain to the rear and penciled notation to price.

Lee Marvin and Jean Seberg on the set of "Paint Your Wagon" (1968)

Los Angeles: Paramount Pictures, 1968. Vintage oversize double weight candid photograph of Lee Marvin singing "Wanderin' Star" to Jean Seberg on the set of the Western musical "Paint Your Wagon" in 1968. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. Willoughby has written on the verso in holograph pencil: "Lee Marvin & Jean Seberg / 'Paint Your Wagon.'" With two of Willoughby's ASMP rubber stamps (Pacific Palisades and New York addresses) on the verso. Full provenance available. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. 9 x 13.25 inches. Near Fine. Pitt 3009.

Candy (Original screenplay for the 1968 film, copy belonging to director Frank Perry)

New York: Francis Productions, Inc, 1968. First Draft script for the 1968 film. Copy belonging to Frank Perry, with his name in red holograph ink on the title page. Perry considered making the film, but it was ultimately directed by Christian Marquand. This draft is credited solely to Southern, though Buck Henry was ultimately given full credit for the adaptation from the novel by Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. In her memoir, "Trippin' with Terry Southern: What I Think I Remember," Gail Gerber details at some length the tangle of legal problems over the publication of "Candy" in the US and abroad. Publication was poorly controlled, resulting in numerous pirated editions and lawsuits involving Maurice Girodias (Olympia Press), Putnam, and small US paperback publishers such as Lancer, Greenleaf, and Brandon House. She notes, "Despite the popularity of the novel, Hollywood was always leery about getting involved with properties that have 'clouded title,' so it was no surprise that Frank Perry gave up on the idea of directing the film version of 'Candy,' much to Terry's disappointment." Black studio wrappers, with title (CANDY) and Studio Duplicating Service address in yellow. Title page present, undated, noted as First Draft, with credits for screenwriters Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. 136 leaves, mechanincally reproduced,. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads.

Vixen! [Vixen! ......the female fox] (Original screenplay, Erica Gavin's working copy)

Corona, CA: Eve Productions, 1968. Actress Erica Gavin's shooting script for her 1968 feature film debut, "Vixen!" (here titled "Vixen! ......the female fox), with her annotations throughout. Directed by Russ Meyer, written for the screen by Meyer, Robert Rudelson, and Anthony James Ryan, and starring Gavin, Garth Pillsbury, and Harrison Page. Ms. Gavin's notes and corrections are present on virtually every page in black marker and blue ink, with her name ("Erika") in bold black marker on the front wrapper, which has been separately preserved. Script is complete, with title page showing credits for Meyer and all the screenwriters. "Vixen!" was one of Russ Meyer's best, sleaziest, and most commercially successful films, made at pretty much the peak of his independent productions (after "Faster Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" in 1965 and before "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls" in 1970). What is less well known is that this film, by way of Ms. Gavin, marked a breakthrough in the onscreen portrayal of women in terms of sexual aggression, using the then-new platform of late-1960s American independent cinema and the aftermath of the Summer of Love as a canvas. Gavin's titular character is a married woman whose sexual boundaries are pretty much non-existent, but instead of being a typical sex romp, the film heads off into areas that can be reasonably described as unexplored by sexploitation films, including communism, race relations, political debate, and terrorist activity. But also present in the film are many of the genre's more familiar themes (breast size, incest, non-stop sexual activity) and a generous dose of humor. 127 leaves, mimeograph, rectos only. Front wrapper separated from the script, mounted with cellotape to an old scrapbook page, with the Gavin's name ("Erika") in bold black holograph marker at the top right corner, phone number in faded green ink at the top left corner, moderate staining and soil; rear wrapper missing. Pages Very Good overall, with some chipping to the right and left edge of the title page (first leaf). In a custom quater-leather clamshell box.

The Tiger Who Came To Tea

The First UK printing published by Collins in 1968.The BOOK is in VERY GOOD++ or better condition.Light spotting to the text block but the pages remain clean.Penned gift inscription to the upper front pastedown.Light bumping to the upper corners and lower spine end.Very light toning to the board covers. The very scarce WRAPPER is price-clipped but retains the publisher's price sticker to the lower front flap.It is in Very Good + condition. The wrapper is lightly toned with a creased top edge and minor spotting to the verso. There is a vertical crease to the rear cover. The wraparound artwork looks very attractive in the removable Brodart archival cover. This is the first edition of the story of Sophie's tea-party where a tiger arrives unannounced, inspired by visits of the author to the zoo with her daughter.Kerr wrote and illustrated the story and went on to produce the hugely successful 'Mog' series. One of the best selling children;s titles of all time and the author's first book.Listed in Martin Salisbury's '100 Great Children's Books' as '.This successful classic is one of those books whose properties somehow defy analysis. Perhaps its compelling nature must simply be put down to a magical coupling of words and pictures that describe the arrival and departure of a mysterious and magnificent stranger.Kerr's illustrations are mostly loose-edged on the white of the page and are beautifully composed'.Extremely scarce to find with such attributes - only the second copy we have handled to date.         A SMALL TOWN IN GERMANY.

Coward - McCann, Inc., [1968]., 1968. First U.S. edition. One of 500 numbered copies, specially bound and signed by the author. Gilt spine lettering somewhat tarnished (as is virtually inevitable with this title), else fine in the original glassine dust jacket with the publisher's presentation slip laid-in. Harting is missing and with him are forty-three files --- all of them Confidential or higher. It is vital that the Germans not learn of Harting's disappearance. With critical negotiations underway in Brussels, the timing couldn't be worse! Scarce title thus.
