Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 Story Window.

(Berkeley / Glendale): (Litmus / Poetry X/Change), (1968). First Edition. Pamphlet Pamphlet. Very Good. [32] pages. Central poem illustration by Bukowski printed in orange ink. Cover image of a bearded man wearing a gas masked by P. David Horton. An early collection, one of approximately 400 copies printed. First edition (first printing). A very good copy in wrappers with some small stains on the covers. This copy has a particularly nice inscription (generic, but one wonders who it was for): 'To make a bold point, thanks for being quite human toward me last night. Yrs. Charles Bukowski, 3-4-72.' Above the inscription, Bukowski has drawn a dog chasing a man chasing a woman. Scarce signed, and especially with such a good inscription.

Tijdschrift voor hedendaagse poëzie/Literair tijdschrift. Jrg. 1 - jrg. 36 [totaal 144 nrs.].

Antwerpen, Gerd Segers, 1968-2009. In afleveringen. Geïll. z/w en kl. Div. formaten.*COMPLETE SET EN NAGENOEG ONVINDBAAR. Themanummers over o.m. - In fraaie conditie.

Selected Poems including the verse play Eli [Signed]

Jonathan Cape, 1968, First edition. An essentially Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing (light pushing to the spine ends, board corners quite mildly bumped), in an essentially Fine dust jacket (light sunning to the spine panel, quite light edge wear), SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS on the title page; a gathering of "Glowing Enigmas I" (as well as II and III), on of the author's most important poem sequences, a selection of poems drawn from six other of her Poetry collections, as well as the verse play "Eli" -- a mystery Play on the sufferings of Israel. Born in Berlin (1891), Nelly Sachs became an unofficial spokeswoman expressing the plight and grief of the Jews. Increasingly frightened by the Nazi's rise, she and her elderly mother fled Germany in 1940, one day before Nelly Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. Her flight was made possible by her friend and frequent correspondent Selma Lagerlof (herself the winner of the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature) who persuaded the Swedish Royal family to intervene and arrange her release from Germany. Nelly Sachs won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her outstanding lyrical and dramatic writing, which interprets Israel's destiny with touching strength" (sharing the prize with Shmuel Yosef Agnon). In presenting the Prize to Nelly Sachs, Anders Österling, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated "Nelly Sachs's writing is today the most intense artistic expression of the reaction of the Jewish spirit to suffering, and thus it can indeed be said to fulfill the humane purpose underlying Alfred Nobel's will." Summarizing the play "Eli", Österling stated: "Let it suffice here to mention the mystery play Eli (1950) about an eight-year-old boy who is beaten to death by a German soldier in Poland when he blows on his shepherd's pipe to call on heaven's help when his parents are taken away. The visionary cobbler Michael manages to trace the culprit to the next village. The soldier has been seized by remorse and, at the encounter in the forest, he collapses without Michael's having to raise his hand against him. This ending denotes a divine justice which has nothing to do with earthly retribution." In our experience, signed copies of Nelly Sachs works are not at all common and signed copies of her works in English translation are as scarce as hens teeth. A very near Fine copy, SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

Gutes Exemplar. Poems Written Before Jumping Out of an 8 Story Window.

(Berkeley / Glendale): (Litmus / Poetry X/Change), (1968). First Edition. Pamphlet Pamphlet. Very Good. [32] pages. Centerfold poem illustration by Bukowski printed in orange ink.

GERALD LAING: PAPER PLATE MULTIPLE - ARCHIVALLY FRAMED IN A PLEXIGLAS BOX

(LAING, GERALD). Laing, Gerald. GERALD LAING: PAPER PLATE MULTIPLE - ARCHIVALLY FRAMED IN A PLEXIGLAS BOX. New York. ND (circa 1968).: On First (Gerald Laing & Bert Stern), First Edition. 4to. Printed Paper Plate in a Box. Artist's Multiple. Fine. One 10 ¼" diameter paper plate screenprinted with lavender ink on white. This is one of four striking paper plate designs conceived by noted British Pop Artist Gerald Laing for the groovy late sixties New York boutique, On First. Located on First Avenue at 61st in Manhattan, the shop was the brainchild of noted fashion and advertising photographer Bert Stern who opened it with the idea of commissioning stylish-yet-inexpensive objects for the home and wardrobe from artists and fashion designers. The store was ultimately short-lived - closing its doors after little more than a year - leaving most of these plates neither distributed, nor seen again. A most handsome example of the lavender biomorphic circle variant of this exceedingly uncommon ephemeral multiple (entry 68 in Lyndsey Ingram and Rupert Halliwell's "Gerald Laing: Prints & Multiples - A Catalogue Raisonné") beautifully presented in a 12 x 12 x 4" archival Artservices sixties-style Plexiglas display box / frame that can be hung on a wall or laid flat on a table.         Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark on the set of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1969)

N.p.: N.p., 1968. Vintage oversize full color double weight photograph of Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark on location for the shooting of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" in Sherborne, England in 1968. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his employment with the Lee Gross Agency in New York), as well as his holograph signature and notation of the film's title in black ink. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 16 x 19.75 inches. Near Fine.
