Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark on the set of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" (1969)

N.p.: N.p., 1968. Vintage oversize full color double weight photograph of Peter O'Toole and Petula Clark on location for the shooting of "Goodbye, Mr. Chips" in Sherborne, England in 1968. Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby, with his rubber stamp on the verso (noting his employment with the Lee Gross Agency in New York), as well as his holograph signature and notation of the film's title in black ink. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009. Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?" Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern. In a custom museum-quality frame, archivally mounted, with UV glass. 16 x 19.75 inches. Near Fine.

Selected Poems including the verse play Eli [Signed]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1968. First edition. An essentially Fine copy of the first UK edition, first printing (light pushing to the spine ends, board corners quite mildly bumped), in an essentially Fine dust jacket (light sunning to the spine panel, quite light edge wear), SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS on the title page; a gathering of "Glowing Enigmas I" (as well as II and III), on of the author's most important poem sequences, a selection of poems drawn from six other of her Poetry collections, as well as the verse play "Eli" -- a mystery Play on the sufferings of Israel. Born in Berlin (1891), Nelly Sachs became an unofficial spokeswoman expressing the plight and grief of the Jews. Increasingly frightened by the Nazi's rise, she and her elderly mother fled Germany in 1940, one day before Nelly Sachs was scheduled to report to a concentration camp. Her flight was made possible by her friend and frequent correspondent Selma Lagerlof (herself the winner of the 1909 Nobel Prize in Literature) who persuaded the Swedish Royal family to intervene and arrange her release from Germany. Nelly Sachs won the 1966 Nobel Prize in Literature "for her outstanding lyrical and dramatic writing, which interprets Israel's destiny with touching strength" (sharing the prize with Shmuel Yosef Agnon). In presenting the Prize to Nelly Sachs, Anders Österling, Member of the Swedish Academy, stated "Nelly Sachs's writing is today the most intense artistic expression of the reaction of the Jewish spirit to suffering, and thus it can indeed be said to fulfill the humane purpose underlying Alfred Nobel's will." Summarizing the play "Eli", Österling stated: "Let it suffice here to mention the mystery play Eli (1950) about an eight-year-old boy who is beaten to death by a German soldier in Poland when he blows on his shepherd's pipe to call on heaven's help when his parents are taken away. The visionary cobbler Michael manages to trace the culprit to the next village. The soldier has been seized by remorse and, at the encounter in the forest, he collapses without Michael's having to raise his hand against him. This ending denotes a divine justice which has nothing to do with earthly retribution." In our experience, signed copies of Nelly Sachs works are not at all common and signed copies of her works in English translation are as scarce as hens teeth. A very near Fine copy, SIGNED BY NELLY SACHS. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

2001: A Space Odyssey (Signed first edition)

Hutchinson, London 1968 - A Near Fine copy in like dust jacket. Spine of book just slightly cocked a few small spots on the closed text block, otherwise in excellent condition. Near Fine dust jacket without chips or tears. Inscribed by the author on the title page: "For Chris [Hicks] from Arthur C. Clarke." Inscribed for Chris Hicks of the Leaning Chimney Press, with his ex libris plate on the front paste-down. Clarke's "2001: A Space Odyssey" was quite ahead of its time. As a young boy growing up in Somerset, England, Clarke read American pulp sci-fi novels and was fascinated by the concept of space travel. Following these interests, Clarke was spurred into a writing career that launched a generational fascination with space within a rapidly modernizing world. "2001: A Space Odyssey" is a monumental novel that struggles with complex themes, such as the perils of technology, nuclear warfare, and the concepts of evolution and artificial intelligence, that were quickly becoming very real concepts to twentieth-century readers. The famous Stanley Kubrick film release preceded the novel, which explains the use of movie images on the dust jacket. The movie Very shortly after its publication, "2001" was made into a film by Stanley Kubrick, grossing millions worldwide. The film and book have picked up numerous awards within their fields for their imaginative and groundbreaking content, and contribution to contemporary scientific thought."Two possibilities exist: either we are alone in the Universe or we are not. Both are equally terrifying." Arthur C. Clarke. Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Gabriel Garcia Marquez Collection. 16 First editions all INSCRIBED: No One Writes to the Colonel; One Hundred Years of Solitude; Innocent Erendira; In Evil Hour; Chronicle of a Death Foretold; The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor; Clandestine in Chile; Love in the Time of Cholera. . .

NY and Bogota: Harper & Row, Knopf, LEC, Grupo Editorial Norma (1968-2005)., 1968. An outstanding collection of 16 first editions of the Nobel Laureate all variously INSCRIBED to the collector, Richard Mattie by Garcia Marquez. No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories; One Hundred Years of Solitude; Innocent Erendira; In Evil Hour; Chronicle of a Death Foretold; The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor; Clandestine in Chile; Love in the Time of Cholera; The General in His Labyrinth; Strange Pilgrims; Love and Other Demons; News of a Kidnapping; Living to Tell the Tale; Memories of My Melancholy Whores; Vivir para contarla; One Hundred Years of Solitude LEC. This collection was put together by the highly resourceful Richard Mattie between the years of 1997 and 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had close connection with Garcia Marquez. All 16 books are personally inscribed to Mattie by Garcia Marquez, and, noteworthy, the copy of the LEC of One Hundred Years of Solitude is inscribed in English, "To Richard, from his Friend." and is signed and dated 1998. Garcia Marquez rarely inscribed in English. Mattie said that Garcia Marquez commented that this was the first time he signed this book. All the books are first American editions with the exception of Vivir para cotarla which is the true first in Spanish, the Columbian edition published by Grupo Editorial Norma, Bogota, 2002. As every serious Garcia Marquez collectors fully knows, there are a great many highly suspect "signed" Garcia Marquez books on the internet and purchasing any without impeccable, serious provenance is a risky venture at best. Mattie was so diligent in his documentation that he kept every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire, and email (all printed out fully) from this close to 9 year difficult collecting venture. This 1" thick folder, entitled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005" is included with this collection. Never have I seen such minutely detailed provenance. As a collection of inscribed Garcia Marquez titles in English translation, this is as close to a sine qua non statement as a contemporary collector might hope to come. All the books From Chronicle of a Death Foretold forward through Memories of My Melancholy Whores are tight, fine books in bright, fine DJs with the exception of Strange Pilgrims which has slight cloth discoloration at the base of the book. No One Writes to the Colonel has a partial name erasure top of the front free endpaper and some top edge foxing, else very good plus in a bright first issue DJ with a minuscule closed tear bottom of front panel else fine. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first edition book in the second issue DJ with a period end of the first front flap paragraph. There is a small contemporary inscription dated 1970 top of the half-title page in Spanish. The book has light cloth wear at the extremities else tight, near fine in a bright, price intact ($7.95) DJ with small fold tears top of front panel near the spinal gutter and at the base of spine (given the floral pattern, these are not very noticeable) with some clear tape reinforcements verso.  Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.

die Reihe 1-8 [Complete]. A Periodical Devoted to Developments in Contemporary Music

Theodore Presser in Association with Universal Edition, Bryn Mawr 1968 - 8vo, each volume an 8vo bound in printed wraps of varying colors, by the Austrian designer Willi Bahner. All issues published of the first English language edition of one of the most important new music periodicals of its time, which began publication in German in 1954 out of the circle of composers which coalesced around the Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (NWDR). The covers are brilliantly and minimally designed in a variety of hues by the unheralded but important Austrian designer Willi Bahner. The contributors are largely European, though John Cage offers several important texts. The periodical was the most important English language source of information for European experimental and serial music, though this English language version was often contentiously received by English language readers. The periodical came to an end after a falling out between the two editors, with the epic issue no. 8. To the credit of the periodical, one of the most bitter attacks on the magazine was published in die Reihe itself, an attack on work by Stockhausen by the Dutch physicist Adriaan Fokker - a fitting coda to a provocative and contentious periodical. Each issue was devoted to articles on a particular theme. No. 1 - Electronic Music, No. 2 - Anton Webern, No. 3 - Musical Craftmanship, 4. Young Composers, 5. Reports Analyses, 6. » (Pascale Casanova in Beckett l'abstracteur).

Stolen Kisses [Baisers voles] (Original photograph from the set of the 1968 film)

Paris: Les Films du Carrosse, 1968. Vintage borderless black-and-white double weight photograph from the set of the 1968 French film noir. With a rubber stamped date of March 12, 1970 on the verso, along with numerous press notations and markings. A wonderful candid shot of Truffaut, Jade, and Léaud sitting on a park bench during principal shooting of the film. Raymond Cauchetier began his career as a set photographer in 1956, on Marcel Camus' 1957 film, "Fugitive in Saigon." Cauchetier's film career is closely linked to the French New Wave, for whose founders he became a favorite still photographer. Between "Breathless" in 1960, and "Stolen Kisses in 1968 (his final film), Cauchetier worked with most of the emblematic directors of that movement, including Truffaut, Jean-Luc Godard, Claude Chabrol, Jacques Demy, Agnes Varda, and Jacques Rozier. He was honored with a monograph "Photos de cinéma: Autour de la Nouvelle Vague (1958-1968)" (Image France Éditions, 2007), in which several of his most evocative images can be seen. The third of Truffaut's series of five films wherein Léaud portrays Truffaut's semi-autobiographical character Antoine Doinel. 9.75 x 8 inches.         1968 Original FRANK SINATRA - SIGNED - SCREENPLAY / SCRIPT "THE LADY IN CEMENT" Rare Early Sinatra Signature

TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX / ARCOLA-MILLFIELD 1968. TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX / ARCOLA-MILLFIELD : , 1968. ORIGINAL FINAL SHOOTING SCRIPT / SCREENPLAY of the TWENTIETH CENTURY FOX / ARCOLA-MILLFIELD PRODUCTION of "THE LADY IN CEMENT". The film Starred FRANK SINATRA as Tony Rome, and Raquel Welch. This Original Screenplay is SIGNED by FRANK SINATRA on the Title Page. The screenplay is dated FEBRUARY 21, 1968. It was Written by Marvin Albert and Jack Guss, (based on the novel by Marvin Albert). Though the title-page states "Final", this was clearly still a work-in-progress. There are numerous blue colored sheets dated 3/4/68 and 3/5/68 that are mixed in with the white sheets, obviously with changes, corrections and/or additions. Also, the film was released on November 20, 1968, nine months after this "final" draft screenplay, meaning there was time for many other changes. Printed blue-paper covers, bound with 3 brass brads, mimeographed inner pages, 8.5x11", white paper mixed with blue paper, 133 pages plus the title page, pages printed on one side only. LADY IN CEMENT is a 1968 Detective Film, Directed by Gordon Douglas and starring FRANK SINATRA as TONY ROME and Raquel Welch as Kit Forrester. A sequel to the 1967 film "TONY ROME" that also Starred Frank Sinatra. Based on the novel by Marvin H. Albert, Lady In Cement was released on November 20, 1968. Condition: The front cover has staining and shorelining from what looks to be an old coffee spill that was quickly wiped up, there is also a bit on the back cover; the covers are creased and worn where they overhang the inner pages; the front page edges (edges of the closed screenplay) have some foxing; the title page has a splattering of old coffee drops to its blank upper front margin and a vertical crease where the page may have once been folded, but the printing remains clear and clean, and Frank Sinatra's signature is bold and bright; the last page has a small amount of very light old staining; the rest of the inner pages are very nice - complete, tight, bright, clean and unmarked. Though coffee (perhaps from Sinatra's cup?) was spilled on the front cover, this screenplay remains solid and nice, with its Original Covers, and the Wonderful EARLY SIGNATURE of the Great FRANK SINATRA. VERY RARE FRANK SINATRA - TONY ROME SCREENPLAY, SIGNED BY SINATRA. Good
