Hand-painted sign commemorating the first commercial transpolar flight

1968 - (DUSTIN, Frederick G.). Airport sign: “Dustin Transpolar Flight.” [Rio de Janeiro: 1968]. Original narrow metal hand-painted sign, white lettering on a red ground, measuring 5 inches by 4-1/2 feet. $1500.Unique artifact, documenting the historic first commercial round-the-world flight, tracking longitudinally across the two poles and touching down on all seven continents, including Antarctica.“Frederick G. Dustin was employed as a fuel engineer on the second Byrd Antarctic expedition (1933-35). As with many of the men involved with this expedition, Dustin went on to participate in other important explorations. In 1968 Modern Air Transport chartered a Convair 990A jet aircraft called Polar Byrd I to fly round-the-world on an exotic world tour. The flight carried 60 passengers and eight crew, and [while it] set no speed records, [it] did land on November 22, 1968 on the 10,000-foot ice runway at McMurdo Sound, Antarctica (U.S. Navy) for refueling” (WingNet). Dustin was the president of the Byrd Polar Center in Boston at the time, and encouraged the Center to sponsor the flight. The Center’s letter of solicitation touted this as “the first commercial flight ever to cross both poles and touch down on all continents,” and warned that “frankly, you will endure some discomfort, and may even face some danger.” “Polar Byrd I” was captained by Hal Neff, former pilot of “Air Force One.” Among the passengers was a man named Bellafontaine, who along with 59 others, paid $10,000 to participate in this historic transpolar flight. One stop on the return itinerary was Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, where the reception committee had erected a hand-painted welcoming sign, reading “Dustin Transpolar Flight.” Bellafontaine became the custodian of this sign.Only a few minor paint-chips. Fine condition.

Carl Andre - Robert Barry - Douglas Huebler - Joseph Kosuth - Sol Lewitt - Robert Morris - Lawrence Weiner. December 1968.

New York. Siegelaub / Wendler. 1968. First edition 1000 copies. 28 x 22 cm. 185 Blatt. OKarton. The \"Xerox book\" - I now would prefer to call it the \"Photocopy book\", so that no one gets the mistaken impression that the project has something to do with XEROX - was perhaps one of the most interesting because it was the first where I proposed a series of \"requirements\" for the project, concerning the use of a standard size paper and the amount of pages the \"container\" within wich the artist was asked to work\". [Vgl.         The Mountains. Illustrated with ten drawings by John Piper, engraved on the wood by Reynolds Stone, with a descriptive note by John Piper.

New York: Chilmark Press 1968. 4to, (ii), 42, (6) pages. Original quarter cloth, morocco backstrip with title in gilt, paper-covered boards illustrated with a wood engraving, top edge gilt, slipcase. As new. Limited to 110 special copies in a total edition of 350, signed by the author, artist and engraver, with an extra set of the 10 engravings tipped in and bound thus. (Carter, The Rampant Lions Press: 34). Handset in 18pt Zapf Palatino on mould made paper from Wookey Hole Mill. The third Clover Hill Edition. “Just after the second world war, John Piper and Reynolds Stone, both enthusiasts of nineteenth-century topographical guide-books, decided to produce a modern equivalent, to illustrate the mountains of Snowdonia. They used wood-engraving both as a reproductive process, so that the pictures could be printed together with the text, and as creative interpretations of the drawings, which in several cases Piper did directly on the blocks. We were eager to print these magnificent engravings, and as the Carters and the Stones are close cousins, negotiations were simplified. Douglas Cleverdon persuaded the Welsh poet R.S. Thomas to write some rich poetic prose to accompany them.” (Rampant Lions Press). The collaboration of three remarkably talented artists, Thomas (poet), Piper (artist) and Stone (engraver and calligrapher), designed and printed by two of Englands finest printers, Will and Sebastian Carter.

Cybernetic Serendipity. The computer and the arts

London - New York: Studio International, , 1968. Brossura, custodia (wrappers, slip-case). Molto Buono (Very Good). Studio International special issue. It was first published to coincide with an exhibition entitled "Cybernetic Serendipity" dealing broadly with the demonstration of how man can use the computer and new technology to extend his creativity and inventiveness, held at the Institute of Contemporary Arts, Nash House, The Mall, London, August 2-October 20, 1968. The exhibition was organized by Jasia Reichardt in collaboration with Mark Dowson (technological adviser) and Peter Schmidt (musical adviser). The exhibition and the cover of the catalogue were designed by Franciszka Themerson. With 7 original posters in cardboard box (cm 51x76; 76x51). 4to. pp. 104 + posters. Molto Buono (Very Good). .

Accompanied by a stamped envelope also addressed to Professor James Nagel of Northeastern University, Boston, Mass, postmarked "June 2{5?}, 1968, Smithtown, N.Y.," and typed [presumably by Heller]. "Joe" Heller writes "Jim" Nagel to to inquire about his new collection of critical essays about Heller's famous novel Catch-22. The author asks for a set of bound galleys of those essays. Evidently, one of the essayists got his facts wrong. In response, Heller relates what actually occurred during his last days in the Army Air Force. He was employeed in PR but couldn't recall doing anything. Letter has Excellent Content about Heller's life and novels. It is in Near Fine condition without discoloration; bearing evidence of the author's attention to detail with blue ink corrections of typos. Heller summarizes his actual duties during the waning days of service in the Army Air Force and corrects a serious misinterpretation about those activities and their supposed relationship to his celebrated novel. Quoting in part: "Dear Jim:...I insist you send me a copy of the [Critical] essays. To answer your questions: After my last mission, I waited around for a couple of months to be sent to the U.S. in January, then, from Atlantic City, I was shipped to the air base at San Angelo, Texas, where I waited around to be discharged, along with thousands of others who'd completed their missions and for whom there was no longer need elsewhere. Technically, I was employed in the Public Relations office, but I can't remember doing any work at all. Armorer's school took only about three or four months; again, after a month or two of waiting after qualifiying, I was sent to the Santa Ana Army Air Base as an aviation cadet, then to training school as a bombardier. The mission you ask about never happened, and I've never heard of it--not the incident you mention....The timing for the essays should be good. The new novel will be out in early October. Best, Joe [signed clearly in ink]"

True Grit (Inscribed by Charles Portis in 1969)

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1968. Third printing. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in the year after publication: "For Sissi Brandon / with warmest regards / Charles Portis / March 18, 1969." We have handled a number of signed and inscribed titles by Portis over time, but this is only the second copy we have seen dated prior to the 1980s, making this a significant example. The film rights to Portis' book were sold in a rather heated bidding war after its 1968 serial publication in the Saturday Evening Post. This was followed by the book publication in the fall, then by the shooting of the film between September and December in Colorado, where the reclusive Portis was on location. The author's second novel, basis for the now-classic film starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby, and the equally classic remake--far more faithful to the text--by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon. Very Good or better in a like dust jacket. Slight lean, some rubbing to the cloth. Jacket shows some shallow creasing, with chipping and short closed tears at the spine corners.
