Human Cardiac Transplantation. An Evaluation of the First Two Operations Performed at the Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town. [In: The American Journal of Cardiology, vol. 22, nr. 4, pp. 584-596].

New York, 1968. Lex 8vo. Entire issue present, in the original printed wrappers. A bit of wear to extremities, but overall a fine copy. Pp. (584)-596. [Entire issue: 44 pp. + pp. 449-608 + pp. (45)-(70)]. First printing of Barnard's second publication (here under the heading "Historical Milestones") on the seminal performance of the world's first human heart transplantations, one of the most important medical performances in the course of history - "the most publicised event in world medical history". This medical breakthrough introduced to the world a way to prolong life that would become of seminal importance to modern man. Barnard famously carried out the world's first human-to-human heart transplant on December 3 1967, which he described in a paper three weeks later. The patent, Louis Washkansky, a 54-year-old grocer suffering from diabetes and incurable heart disease, died of double pneumonia on December 21 that same year. But nonetheless, the operation became a worldrenowned success. Merely a month later, on January 2 1968, Barnard conducted the world's second human heart transplant, inscribing himself into history once again. This time, the patient, Philip Blaiberg, survived for 19 months. The present paper is the first to describe these two seminal performances together."Christiaan (Chris) Barnard was born in 1922 and qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1946. Following surgical training in South Africa and the USA, Barnard established a successful open-heart surgery programme at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 1958. In 1967, he led the team that performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant. The article describing this remarkable achievement was published in the South African Medical Journal just three weeks after the event and is one of the most cited articles in the cardiovascular field. In the lay media as well, this first transplant remains the most publicised event in world medical history. Although the first heart transplant patient survived only 18 days, four of Groote Schuur Hospital's first 10 patients survived for more than one year, two living for 13 and 23 years, respectively. This relative success amid many failures worldwide did much to generate guarded optimism that heart transplantation would eventually become a viable therapeutic option. This first heart transplant and subsequent ongoing research in cardiac transplantation at the University of Cape Town and in a few other dedicated centres over the subsequent 15 years laid the foundation for heart transplantation to become a well-established form of therapy for end-stage cardiac disease. During this period from 1968 to 1983, Chris Barnard and his team continued to make major contributions to organ transplantation, notably the development of the heterotopic ( 'piggy-back') heart transplants; advancing the concept of brain death, organ donation and other related ethical issues; better preservation and protection of the donor heart (including hypothermic perfusion storage of the heart; studies on the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of brain death; and even early attempts at xenotransplantation."         Candy (Original screenplay for the 1968 film, copy belonging to director Frank Perry)

Francis Productions, Inc, New York 1968 - First Draft script for the 1968 film. Copy belonging to Frank Perry, with his name in red holograph ink on the title page. Perry considered making the film, but it was ultimately directed by Christian Marquand. This draft is credited solely to Southern, though Buck Henry was ultimately given full credit for the adaptation from the novel by Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. In her memoir, "Trippin' with Terry Southern: What I Think I Remember," Gail Gerber details at some length the tangle of legal problems over the publication of "Candy" in the US and abroad. Publication was poorly controlled, resulting in numerous pirated editions and lawsuits involving Maurice Girodias (Olympia Press), Putnam, and small US paperback publishers such as Lancer, Greenleaf, and Brandon House. She notes, "Despite the popularity of the novel, Hollywood was always leery about getting involved with properties that have 'clouded title,' so it was no surprise that Frank Perry gave up on the idea of directing the film version of 'Candy,' much to Terry's disappointment." Black titled wrappers, with title (CANDY) and Studio Duplicating Service address in yellow. Title page present, undated, noted as First Draft, with credits for screenwriters Southern and Mason Hoffenberg. 136 leaves, mechanincally reproduced, Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, bound with two gold brads.         True Grit (Inscribed by Charles Portis in 1969)

Simon and Schuster, New York 1968 - Third printing. INSCRIBED by the author on the front endpaper in the year after publication: "For Sissi Brandon / with warmest regards / Charles Portis / March 18, 1969." We have handled a number of signed and inscribed titles by Portis over time, but this is only the second copy we have seen dated prior to the 1980s, making this a significant example. The film rights to Portis' book were sold in a rather heated bidding war after its 1968 serial publication in the Saturday Evening Post. This was followed by the book publication in the fall, then by the shooting of the film between September and December in Colorado, where the reclusive Portis was on location. The author's second novel, basis for the now-classic film starring John Wayne, Glen Campbell and Kim Darby, and the equally classic remake--far more faithful to the text--by Joel and Ethan Coen, starring Jeff Bridges and Matt Damon.Very Good or better in a like dust jacket. Slight lean, some rubbing to the cloth. Jacket shows some shallow creasing, with chipping and short closed tears at the spine corners. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Take the Money and Run (Original screenplay for the 1969 film)

San Francisco: Heywood-Hillary Productions, 1968. Draft script for the 1969 film. Woody Allen's first film as a director, and the film that set the template for his 1970s comedies, as well as later films by Christopher Guest ("Waiting for Guffman," "Best in Show"). Allen initially asked Val Guest to direct, then Jerry Lewis, but both men were denied by the production company, and Allen would eventually direct the film, with less than a million-dollar budget from the new film company, Palomar Pictures International.  Virgil Starkwell (Allen) stars as a terribly inept bank robber. His life is told documentary-style, with an FBI voiceover as well as interviews with his family and friends. Set and shot in San Francisco and inside the walls of San Quentin State Prison. White titled wrappers. Title page present, dated 1968, noted as Script No. 140, with credits for screenwriters Allen and Rose. 127 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 122.
