L'Issue : Six gravures originales de Arikha

Georges Visat, Paris 1968 - Wrappers, in publisher's chemise and slipcase. One of 154 copies on Rives (total edition). Illustrated with six colored etchings by Avigdor Arikha, each signed. Fine. "The colored etchings for L'Issue reveal the subtle and intuitive feeling with which Arikha approaches Beckett's work," Mitchell, Beyond Illustration: The Livre d'Artist in the Twentieth Century, 53; "The etchings and aquatints in this volume are in Arikha's earlier abstract style. Dark and moody in feeling, they are reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism and visually convey the somber outlook of Beckett's literary vision," Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, 160. Photo of Paul Morrissey and Joe Dallesandro on the set of "Flesh" (Original photographs from 1968

New York: Factory Films, 1968. Vintage black-and-white double weight still photograph of director Paul Morrissey and actor Joe Dallesandro, shot during the making of Andy Warhol's 1968 film "Flesh." Photographer Werner Bokelberg's rubber stamp and holograph pencil notations to the verso. Morrissey's first production for Warhol, Dallesandro's second leading role, and an intentionally envelope-pushing film, Dallesandro plays a bisexual prostitute who tricks in order to fund his wife's lover's abortion. "Flesh" was considered so explicit that it was confiscated by the police in 1970 during one of its early screenings, and features an overabundance of scenes that depict our main character's genitalia. The two would work together on five more Warhol films following "Flesh," including "Lonesome Cowboys," and "Heat."9.5 x 11.75 inches (24 x 25 cm). About Near Fine.

Typed Letter Signed about the Freuds and childhood blindness

London 1968 - World acclaimed child psychoanalyst and lifelong partner of Anna Freud, with whom she collaborated on several ground-breaking studies on the analysis of children. Her work with blind children is still considered to be a landmark of empathic scientific observation. She was the daughter of artist Louis Comfort Tiffany and the granddaughter of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co. Two pages each measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, Maresfield Gardens, London, Jan. 7, 1968, concerning British psychoanalyst Ernest Jones and his relationship with Anna and Sigmund Freud, with additional recollections concerning Dr. Melanie Klein. Written to New York book editor and writer Robert Sussman Stewart, in part: ".Dr. Jones came to Vienna a few days after the Anschluss. I was there at the time. I do not think he tried to rescue Professor Freud so much as to try and make arrangements for the family to come to England as well as for some of Professor's chosen co-workers. This he did in his most helpful and competent manner. Dr. Jones's greatest wish was that Professor and his family should come to England, but above all that they should not go anywhere else.I have always understood that Dr. Jones invited Melanie Klein to come to London to start Child Analysis there. From then on he supported her point of view rather than Anna Freud's in her teaching of child analysis. What is interesting is that Melanie Klein in her later years had the feeling that Dr. Jones was not supporting her sufficiently and felt bitterly about it." With additional content pertaining to the congenitally totally blind child who she believes "should be considered quite apart from 'the blind' who have in the present, or have had in the past some degree of sight." Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope. Two horizontal folds; boldly signed and in near fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Honor King: End Racism. PLACARD

      - Placard, 14 x 19.75 inches. Memphis, 1968. Large black letters printed on white posterboard stating "HONOR KING: END RACISM!" Poster designed for a march on April 8, 1968, 4 days after Martin Luther King's Jr.'s assassination. Printed by Allied Printing. Corners and top are trimmed, creasing throughout, staining and a pair of less than two inch tears on left side and another at top affecting the first "O" in "Honor". Despite the obvious condition issues this piece displays as a worn relic of one of the most turbulent moments in recent American history and a defining moment of the civil rights movement. Rare.An assassin took Dr. King's life on April 4, 1968, while he was in Memphis to support a strike of 1,300 black sanitation workers - the working poor of their day - to demand the right to have a union. In an atmosphere of extreme tension, Mrs. King and three of her children led some 20,000 marchers through the streets of Memphis on April 8, holding signs that read, "Honor King: End Racism," "Union Justice Now," and the placard from earlier in the week, that stated simply "I Am A Man." National Guardsmen lined the streets, perched on M-48 tanks, bayonets mounted, as helicopters circled overhead. She led another 150,000 in a funeral procession through the streets of Atlanta the next day.

        2001: A Space Odyssey

1968 - "CLARKE, Arthur C. 2001: A Space Odyssey. (New York): New American Library, (1968). Octavo, original blue and black paper-covered boards, photographic endpapers, original dust jacket. $1500.First edition of Clarke's novel of the "proverbial good science fiction movie" he and Stanley Kubrick created."Kubrick wrote to me in the spring of 1964, asking if I had any ideas that would enable him to make the 'proverbial good science fiction movie' I had already given Stanley a list of my shorter pieces, and we had decided that one—'The Sentinel'—contained a basic idea on which we could build Stanley suggested that before we embarked on the drudgery of the script, we let our imaginations soar freely by writing a complete novel, from which we could devise the script. This is more or less the way it worked out, though toward the end, novel and screenplay were being written simultaneously, with feedback in both directions. Thus, I rewrote some sections after seeing the movie rushes—a rather expensive method of literary creation, which few other authors have enjoyed" (Clarke). With the success of both film and book, Clarke "became perhaps the best-known science fiction writer in the world" (Clute & Nicholls, 231). His novel—the first in an eventual tetraology—is "about the two things Clarke seems to think we mortals would most like to know in a universe in which we can only hope that the odds are in favor of the race's survival: that we are not alone and that we have not lived in vain" (John Hollow). Barron, Anatomy of Wonder II-254. Currey, 92. Book with slightest rubbing to edges, minor discoloration to lower edge of rear board. Dust jacket lightly rubbed with short closed tears to front panel, small chip to rear panel. A near-fine copy." [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

In a Narrow Grave: Essays on Texas

The Encino Press 1968 - Austin: The Encino Press, 1968. First Edition, Second Printing, in First State dustjacket. Mustard-colored cloth boards with title card on spine. 177pp. Conforms to all points: no edition statement or letter on copyright page, "skycrapers" misprint corrected on line 12 of page 105, dustjacket showing no price and with the "wtih" and "head" misprints in the fifth and final paragraphs, respectively. Unclipped dustjacket is clean and crisp with just some light rubbing to the top edges, but no chips, tears, or marks. Jacket also shows some light rubbing to top corner of front flap and a thin crease down spine, but is very nice overall. Boards are clean and square with some very light scuffs. Previous owner's brief gift inscription on front free endpaper, obscured by flap. Thin crease showing down the very edge of page 105/106. Binding is solid and pages are unmarked. The author's first collection of non-fiction, the actual First Printing was apparently so plagued with typesetting errors that almost all copies were recalled and destroyed--various sources claiming that only around 15 or so copies survived--making this edition, (apart from the signed/slipcased edition, itself limited to 250 copies), as near a First Edition as most are likely ever to find, and of which this copy is a quite attractive example. OPERATION LEONTINE ou FAUT PAS PRENDRE LES ENFANTS DU BON DIEU POUR DES CANARDS SAUVAGES Gaumont International, 41 avenue Georges V, Paris 8e, BAL 44-04

[Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Honor King: End Racism. PLACARD

1968. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. Placard, 14 x 19.75 inches.

Archive of production photographs and ephemera from "2001: A Space Odyssey," from the collection of scientific advisor Frederick I. Ordway III

Beverly Hills, CA: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer [MGM], 1968. Archive including 20 vintage linen-backed production photographs, a trade advertisement, a film program, and a souvenir booklet from the 1968 film "2001: A Space Odyssey." From the collection of NASA scientific consultant Frederick I. Ordway III, with images prominently featuring Ordway, production designer Harry Lange, Arthur C. Clarke, Stanley Kubrick, and others. One photograph is SIGNED by Ordway in white marker. All photographs mounted on matte board, as issued.Kubrick's sprawling, science fiction epic traces the evolution of human intelligence under the influence of an unspecified alien force. Along with "Blade Runner," Kubrick's masterpiece forever altered the standard for visual and conceptual sophistication in science fiction and genre films. The pre-production for the film set standards as well, as Kubrick hired one of the greatest science fiction authors of the 1960s, Arthur C. Clarke, to be his screenwriter, and hired over 20 scientists like Ordway to consult on every detail of the film. The film's high degree of scientific accuracy, coupled with bleeding-edge special effects and minimal use of dialogue, make "2001" universally recognized as one of the most influential films ever made. The development of the film was kept strictly under wraps, and behind-the-scenes material of any kind is rare. Winner of an Academy Award for Best Special Effects, and nominated for three others including Best Director. Set in space, shot on location in Scotland, England, Arizona, and Utah. Photographs 8 x 10 inches (20.5 x 25.5 cm), mounted on 11 x 14 inch matte board (30 x 35.5 cm). Trade advertisement 9 x 12 inches (23 x 30.5 cm), full color, creased. Souvenir booklet 7.25 x 16 inches (18 x 40.5 cm), full color, 12 leaves, saddle stitched, folded. Program 5.5 x 8.5 inches (14 x 21.5 cm), black and white, saddle stitched single leaf. Very Good to Near Fine. Complete collation details available on request.

The two would work together on five more Warhol films following "Flesh," including "Lonesome Cowboys," and "Heat." 9.5 x 11.75 inches (24 x 25 cm). About Near Fine.

        Soma, divine mushroom of immortality.

The Hague, Mouton, 1968. 4to (29.8 x 20.5 cm). xiii., 381, [i] pp., two full colour plates (illustrations), 17 tipped in full colour photographic plates (I-XV, XXII; plate VIII with two photos tipped in, the second not counted), and six black and white photos (XVI-XX, and one not numbered), 10 numbered text figures, including one unnumbered text figure - possibly number 8 - tinted with red, three maps (labelled A, B, C), one folded chart. Original blue half calf with gilt border and gilt title on the spine. Fore-edge uncut.l True first, being number 32 of the limited edition, described in the book as follows: "Of this book 680 copies have been made, designed by Giovanni Mardersteig and set in Dante type, of which two are designed A & B and the others are numbered from 1 to 678. The text and the illustrations have been printed by the Stamperia Valdonegga in Verona, except for the two plates in pochoir, which were executed in Paris by Daniel Jacomet et Cie. The paper was made by hand by Fratelli Magnani, Pescia, and the printing was finished in October 1968". This edition was published in the Hague, and is not a New York, NY Harcourt Brace edition, which is the simpler trade edition published after 1969. Oddly, there are New York copies on the market that are supposed to belong to the same limited edition, but in those on the internet the number of illustrations (lower in the New York trade edition), is "wisely" not mentioned. This is Ethno-Mycological Studies I (sometimes, erroneously listed as "Ethno-Mythological Studies"). In this work the writer, ethnomycologist and banker Robert Gordon Wasson (1898-1986), provides ample evidence for the important role that hallucinogenic mushrooms, in particular the ubiquitous mushroom Amanita muscaria (fly agaric), play in various ancient and modern cultures. Slipcase wanting, otherwise a fine, unmarked, spotless copy. Volbracht, 2230.
