        House at Silverton, Signed & Titled Limited Edition Print by Lloyd Foltz

      Foltz, Lloyd, Wichita, KS 1968 - This is an original pencil signed blockprint selected by the Friends of Art at KSU to be their annual gift print in 1968 (a tradition continued by Friends of Art following the demise of the Prairie Print Makers organization in 1965). It is an unframed, woodcut on paper by Prairie Print Maker Lloyd Foltz with a 7-1/2" x 10" image on a 10-1/4" x 14" sheet, Signed in pencil LR, Titled in pencil LL, with artist's chop in Block. Lloyd C Foltz (1897-1990) is an American artist whose work focused on topics popularized by Regionalists and American scene imagists, incl small town views, Western mountain and prairie landscapes, vernacular architecture, locomotives and railroad yards. The artist made sketches on site as a starting point then finished his works based on the ideal that art, in its final form, should incorporate elements of memory and imagination. He created more than 100 lithographs, graphite sketches, ink drawings, aquatints, etchings, watercolors and block prints. Critics say Foltz came closest to matching the technical versatility of his mentor and lithographic master of the period, C. A. Seward. The popularity of Foltz, and fellow Prairie Print Makers, paralleled the growth of America's Arts & Crafts movement where attributes of hand-craftsmanship and fine yet simple detail were highly regarded.       Small collection of documents related to the squatters movement in New York and Boston in the 1960s, including a 36 pp. booklet "Use or Abuse: How to Turn Vacant Storefronts, Buildings, and Lots into Community Assets", prepared by students in the East Harlem Studio of the Division of Urban Planning at the School of Architecture, Columbia University, with a map and listing of vacant properties in East Harlem as of April 1968; a 4-pp. newspaper with the headline "No Rent Increases, No Evictions: Build Low-Rent Housing - Tax the Exploiters" and a pamphlet for an anti-war rally, both printed by the Cambridge Tenants' Organizing Committee; a double-sided pamphlet titled "The Squatters' Movement Must Grow", distributed by the Boston Area Congress for Tenants Rights; and two copies of a pamphlet for a rally at Blackstone Park in Boston's South End. Scattered illustrations from photographs and drawings. Various sizes, mostly 4to. Booklet printed wrpps., rest of documents loose. Boston, Cambridge and New York, n.d. (circa 1968-1970). The late 1960s and early 1970s were a time of much political upheaval, highlighted by the Vietnam War and the rise of student movements around the world. The squatters movement was related to these changes in the political landscape. In Boston, after a successful battle for rent control, the Cambridge Tenants Organizing Committee was founded in April 1970 by former members of the Cambridge Peace and Freedom Party to campaign for decent and affordable housing, and to help tenants document problems with landlords and fight evictions. Their membership was comprised mostly of welfare recipients, workers, and "victims of oppression"

        Computer Art and Human Response

      Charlottesville, Virginia: Paul B. Victorius, 1968. First Edition. Very good antiquarian condition. Oblong octavo, very good in publisher's black cloth, original dust-wrapper (frayed along edges but perfectly sound), preserved in mylar sleeve. 96 pp, illustrations of computer generated art throughout, some in colour. First edition, one of 250 signed copies (this one being No. 73), now very rare in private ownership. This collection of Sumner's computer artwork and lyrical descriptive prose is the first book on computer art, according to Jeremy Norman at historyofinformation.com who states that the book "appears to be the first monograph by a computer artist, and because it explains techniques, it is probably the first book on how to produce computer art" and notes that William Fetter's 1965 book on 'Computer Graphics in Communication' was focused on computer graphics used in engineering). As we learn from COMAPART (Center of Excellence Digital Art): "Lloyd Sumner (1943-1996) was an early computer artist in the USA, the first, perhaps, to try and make a living from the graphic works he made the computer to realise. He was represented at the Cybernetic Serendipity show (London 1968) as well as the Tendencies 5 (Zagreb 1969). His booklet 'Computer Art and Human Response' appeared as a private publication in 1968. It was another step in his decision to commercialise his art. In that book, he calls computers he was working with [the Burroughs B5500 and the Calcomp 565] 'his friends.' His works are characterized by smooth curves, moiré patterns, symmetry and evenly spaced lines. Randomness does not play an important role, most works are carefully calculated, nothing is left to chance. Comparing his oeuvre of geometric and, at times, figurative line-based shapes with other productions of the time, it stands out for a simple, searching, at times almost childishly naive style. He had access to computer hardware while working at the Computer Science Center at the University of Virginia. There he found a plotting machine of which no one seemed to know how to use. So he acquainted himself with it, and was soon producing computer art. Sumner said about computer art in general: "The computer artist is a reactor, not an innovator. He is an artist with a tool not a programmer with luck." Ours is the only copy of the first edition on the market, signed or unsigned.

        Typed Letter Signed on personalized stationery with holograph corrections in pencil and text encircled and signed in pencil, 4to on personalized stationery, Rapallo, July 23, n.y. [ca 1932-33]

      Pound begins this brief letter with a reference about his opera and makes a significant comment on two notorious trials, the Scottsboro Boys trial and on the Mooney case. The newspaper he references is "The Chicago Tribune." Pound writes, "Private" at the top of the page and continues. "Thanks for boost of the Villon. I enc/ a few words re/ this a/m editorial. The Mooney case is different...Mooney probably very tiresome character but still.....not a case primarily against capital. About the black boys // are"unt [holograph apostrophe] it knowd that the two ladies were [holograph cross out] boxcar whores who declined to accuse the black boys until they had been talked to by the POlice [sic] ??? I don't [holograph apostrophe] think I have got any prejudice either way; but have an interest in facts...." Signed in large initials, "EP." The letter shows a rust stain from a paper clip, center fold crease and mild soiling from normal aging. It is possible that Pound writes to Wambly Bald. Bald was the literary columnist of the Paris edition during this time. In Pound/Joyce: The Letters of Ezra Pound to James Joyce, by Ezra Pound [1968], mention is given to the paper being "one of Pound's forums for letters to the editor." This suggests that perhaps the editor to whom Pound writes is Wambly Bald. In addition, Bald had promoted Pound's opera, Le Testament de Villon, in an earlier issue of the paper, as he thanks his correspondent here for the "boost of the Villon." Pound wrote his first opera, Le Testament de Villon, in 1919, but it was not performed until 1931 when it was transmitted as a radio opera. The first complete premier was on BBC Radio in 1933. According to slippeddisccom, the opera was written as a "revolt against musical impressionism." Based on this information, the reference to the opera suggests Pound wrote the letter circa 1932-33. Pound refers to the trial of Thomas Mooney (1882 -1942), an American political activist and labor leader, who was convicted with Warren K. Billings for the San Francisco Preparedness Day Bombing of 1916. It was widely believed that he was wrongly convicted of a crime he did not commit and condemned to death. In 1918 Pres. Wilson commuted his death sentence to life in prison. Mooney served 22 years in before finally being pardoned in 1939. Pound's remarks about the Scottsboro Boys and his interest in the truth makes this brief letter particularly interesting. Protests and fundraising efforts on behalf of the Scottsboro Boys took place in the early 1930s. Writers and intellectuals signed an appeal in the spring of 1933 and included signatures of Ezra and Dorothy Pound with a note by Ezra Pound, "I not only protest, but if this sort of judicial sanction of murder and frame-up continues I shd. Be disposed to advocate direct action. We have had enough criminals in high office already. A state even a state sanely founded can not indefinitely continue if it condones and sanctions legal murder of innocent men." Pound contributed many letters and articles to the Paris edition (formally, the European Edition) of "The Chicago Tribune." The paper was one the American expatriates read. It ran from 1917 when it began, started by the editor and publisher Col. Robert R. McCormick, as an Army Edition and after the war continued until 1934. McCormick decided to continue it after the war because it was fostering new art and literary movements and the numbers of Americans in Paris began to increase. In the '20s there were three American papers, but according to the National Journal of Literature and Discussion (vqronline.org), The Tribune's" Paris edition was "the liveliest of the three.".

      1968 - FIRST EDITION OF SAKHAROV'S PATHBREAKING THEORY, THE FIRST QUANTIZATION OF SPACE. Full volume with original wraps bound in. In this paper, Sakharov suggests that quantum fluctuations of the vacuum induce the geometry of spacetime. His work gave rise to new research areas in physics, work that continues to this day. Soviet Physics Doklady is published by the American Institute of Physics and is an English translation of the physics sections of the Proceedings of the Academy of Sciences of the USSR. Andrei Dmitrievich Sakharov was a "Russian nuclear physicist, Soviet dissident, an activist for disarmament, peace and human rights" (Sakharov Human Rights Prize, 15 January 2014). In 1968 he sought address a number of physics 'oddities', particularly that gravity seems to operate among complex aggregates of interacting particles but does not seem to impact interactions between elementary particles. As well, Sakharov wanted" to derive Einstein's general relativity formulas from a more basic set of assumptions" (Laszio, Connectivity Hypothesis, 57). "Physicists had known for a long time that there is a superficial similarity between Einstein's equation of how the momentum-energy tensor affects the curvature of space-time and Maxwell's equation of the electromagnetic field, but the connection between gravitation and electromagnetism was made only in 1968, and it had to do with the vacuum" (Scaruffi, Gravity as the Vacuum). In this paper, Sakharov proposes a simple explanation: "that gravitation might be not a fundamental interaction but a by-product of the electromagnetic interaction, precisely an electromagnetic phenomenon induced by the presence of matter in the quantum vacuum (the quantum field that is present even in "empty" space). Thus, according to Sakharov, matter is not just "there" but is "in" the quantum vacuum, and therefore interacts with it, causing some kind of quantum-fluctuation energy. That fluctuation is gravitation. "In a sense, Sakharov moved to Quantum Theory the same objection that Mach had moved to Newton's Physics: you can't assume that a body is isolated, because a body is always "interacting" with something. Except that Sakharov updated this idea to the terminology of Quantum Theory. A body, any body, is immersed in quantum fields, and thus interacts with them. One such field is the quantum vacuum. Sakharov [argues] that this was not negligible at all, in fact that it was the origin of the gravitational interaction itself" (ibid). CONDITION & DETAILS: Full volume with original wraps bound in. Good !" - CAMPBELL SOUP ADVERTISEMENTScreenprint in colors on a disposable A-line dress made of screen-printed tissue, wood pulp and rayon mesh with binding tape, circa 1965, labeled 'The Souper Dress' at the neck, from the edition of unknown size, vertical and horizontal folds (as issued), wear/losses along parts of several of the folds, but this example, unlike most, does not have the bottom 3-inch hem cut off, and is thus complete. 36½ x 21½ in. (927 x 546 mm.). Beautifully framed in conservation-grade materials under UV-plexi. The  Souper Dress  is a classic example where fashion, art and industry intersect into one image, capturing the vibrant, youthful, optimistic and consumerist zeitgeist of the 1960s in America to perfection.  As art historian Marco Livingstone has stressed, Pop Art was never a circumscribed movement with membership and manifestos. Rather, it was a sensibility emergent in the 1950s and rampant in the 1960s. Andy Warhol (who began his career as a fashion illustrator) had been painting Campbell's soup cans since 1962. Such advertising icons, along with cartoons and billboards, yielded a synthesis of word and image, of art and the everyday and fashion quickly embraced the spirit of Pop, playing an important role in its dissemination. The Souper Dress inspired by the iconic Campbell Soup Cans series,  flame-resistant unless previously washed or cleaned, was imagined and produced by the Campbell Soup Company as a mail order offer and as an effective advertising campaign when paper dresses were all the rage in the 60s. Two labels from any different kinds of Campbell's Vegetable Soups and $1.00 got you the dress.

In 1960, Shomei Tomatsu (1930-2012) was offered the assignment of documenting the aftereffects of the atomic bomb which leveled Nagasaki in 1945 and the city's reconstruction. He knew little about Nagasaki and like many Japanese had chosen not to confront the trauma of the bombing. But on exploring the city, he was shocked by the depth of the scars and the lingering effect on the survivors. That initial assignment resulted in Hiroshima-Nagasaki Document 1961, a collaboration with Ken Domon, and a lifelong interest in the city. Further visits in the early 1960s resulted in the 1966 publication, 11:02 Nagasaki, arguably one of the most significant books of modern Japanese photography. Despite the title reference to the moment the bomb exploded and froze the iconic watch pictured on the cover, the book is as much a Klein-like tour of a city or a Strand-like record of a "place." However, in Tomatsu's editing, that fateful moment in 1945 echoes throughout--either literally in images of the victims and objects left behind or in more symbolic ways such as the presence of the U.S. military and the spread of American pop culture. As with so much of Tomatsu's work, a major theme of 11:02 Nagasaki is the collision of east and west, and the cultural and moral repercussions that followed. The second edition is actually unsold copies of the first edition with a new printed paper label glued to the spine and a new colophon page tipped in at the rear. Photographs by Shomei Tomatsu; texts by Tamaki Motoi; quotes by survivors. Unpaginated [168 pages]; 119 full-page b&w gravure-printed plates; 7.75 x 9 inches. Text in Japanese. Jean GOURMELIN (Paris 1920 - Meudon 2011) s'initie au dessin dés son plus jeune âge, puis travaille avec l'artiste Charles Portel qui lui enseigne la technique du papier-peint, de la gravure sur bois et du pochoir, avec Nobilis. Il complète sa formation à l'Ecole des Arts Décoratifs et a pour maître Othon Friesz. Avec Max Ingrand, maître verrier, il se passionne pour cet art des vitraux et réalise ceux des Châteaux d'Amboise, de Blois, de la Cathédrale de Saint-Malo ... Grâce à Maximilien Vox il revient à l'édition et l'illustation. Sa rencontre avec l'écrivain de science-fiction Jacques Sternberg détermine le début d'une amitié forte avec Louis Pauwels et sa collaboration à la Revue Planète. Ils lançent le mouvement du "Réalisme fantastique" et, selon l'expression de Sternberg, "Où les compositions de Jean Gourmelin brillaient comme des soleils noirs ... Son inspiration, il la puise dans ses terreurs, ses vertiges, ses gouffres métaphysiques, ses fantasmes, son théâtre d'épouvante et ses décors de rêve". Il anime les "Chroniques" de France-Soir. Des affiches pour le cinéma et le théâtre sortent de ses crayons. De nombreuses expositions saluent son talent dans des galeries et musées ( Centre Culturel de Meudon, Musée Georges Pompidou ...).
