        Original Portrait of Ringo

      - Enormous original ink and watercolor portrait of Ringo by Heinz Edelmann, 31 x 47 inches, showing him in a Yellow Submarine-esque striped suit jacket against a psychedelic background. Framed and in very good condition, with scattered staining and soiling. Edelmann, a German illustrator and designer, is best known for his art direction and character designs for the Beatles' 1968 animated film Yellow Submarine. This work is unsigned and was presumably intended for some sort of display, possibly a performance set or event promotion. It may have been a preliminary draft for one of those things  - we have puzzled over the name spelling and frankly don't know what to make it of it. We acquired this from a French collector, who likewise didn't know what to make of that feature. But the piece is certainly contemporary to the period and based on the confidence and style of the line and overall impression, we feel confident in ascribing this to Edelman himself. However, as the work is unsigned, we must allow for the possibility it may have been executed by another hand, possibly an assistant or imitator. In any event, impressive in size and style, this is an extraordinary Beatles piece.

Typed Letter Signed about the Freuds and childhood blindness

London, 1968. unbound. Two pages each measuring 11 x 8.5 inches, Maresfield Gardens, London, Jan. 7, 1968, concerning British psychoanalyst Ernest Jones and his relationship with Anna and Sigmund Freud, with additional recollections concerning Dr. Melanie Klein. Written to New York book editor and writer Robert Sussman Stewart, in part: "...Dr. Jones came to Vienna a few days after the Anschluss. I was there at the time. I do not think he tried to rescue Professor Freud so much as to try and make arrangements for the family to come to England as well as for some of Professor's chosen co-workers. This he did in his most helpful and competent manner. Dr. Jones's greatest wish was that Professor and his family should come to England, but above all that they should not go anywhere else...I have always understood that Dr. Jones invited Melanie Klein to come to London to start Child Analysis there. From then on he supported her point of view rather than Anna Freud's in her teaching of child analysis. What is interesting is that Melanie Klein in her later years had the feeling that Dr. Jones was not supporting her sufficiently and felt bitterly about it." With additional content pertaining to the congenitally totally blind child who she believes "should be considered quite apart from 'the blind' who have in the present, or have had in the past some degree of sight." Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope. Two horizontal folds; boldly signed and in near fine condition. World acclaimed child psychoanalyst and lifelong partner of Anna Freud, with whom she collaborated on several ground-breaking studies on the analysis of children. Her work with blind children is still considered to be a landmark of empathic scientific observation. She was the daughter of artist Louis Comfort Tiffany and the granddaughter of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co.

        [Screenplay]: MASH

Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation and Aspen Productions. 1968. Screenplay. Quarto. 141pp. Brandbound in printed blue studio wrappers marked "Final Screenplay." Title page is present and notes: "Final February 26, 1969." General wear to the extremities, mostly at the yapped foredge which has multiple creases, near fine. The Academy Award-winning screenplay for the black comedy MASH written by Ring Lardner, Jr. and based on Richard Hooker's novel of the same name, which followed a group of doctors stationed with a mobile army hospital during the Korean War. The film was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland as surgeons negotiating the absurdities of war, which resonated with audiences during its release at the height of the Vietnam conflict. Though it was a difficult production with apparent friction between Altman, Lardner and many of the actors, the final film was an instant classic and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes. .

Pop Music Expres: mesícník pro príznivce pop music [Pop Music Express: a monthly for pop music fans]. Vol. I, 1–9; Vol. II, 1–12; as well as the scarce “Foto” supplement (complete run).

Prague: Národní rada Juvena 1968 - Folded newsprint; 6–12 pp. each. About very good, with horizontal folds, some toning and occasional light fraying; most issues with small postal address label to cover. The scarce complete run of this rare monthly journal, which showcases the pop-music tastes of young Czechs with an energy and freedom unparalleled in the Czechoslovak Republic. Its short-lived publication was enabled by the relaxed censorship rules during the Prague Spring, the reform movement of 1968 that was stalled by the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in August that year. Created jointly by Prague’s music fan clubs and richly photo-illustrated, the magazine focuses on international as well as domestic representatives of Rock ‘n’ roll, British beat and other pop music genres, such as The Matadors (Prague) and The Bluesmen (Olomouc). Among foreign bands extensively covered were The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Who. Wide coverage is also given to important Czech music festivals, such as the Second Czech Beat Festival in 1969. The issues of the first volume were largely designed by Kája Saudek (born 1935), a Czech comics artist since the 1960s, who was known for his ostentatious American style, which led the Communist authorities to label his work “bourgeois kitsch” and to prohibit many of his series. The last pages of vol. I feature, in serialized form, his original comic strip “Honza Hrom” (Johnny Thunder). Volume II features color and a more psychedelic style. PME was prominently featured in a recent exhibition on rock music and alternative visual culture in Czechoslovakia, curated by Zdenek Primus (“The Pope Smoked Dope”); see pp. 82: “Honza Hruza and Durdis, who ran the Efko, said they were going to start up a magazine. Saudek drew comics on the back page, large format, that was the beginning of 1968 or roundabout then. In Smíchov, where the Soviet liberation tank 23 used to be, that was where the office was. That mag was called the Pop Music Expres.” KVK, OCLC show only the copies at Olomouc State Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Please plant this book

San Francisco / Santa Barbara: Printed by Graham Mackintosh for the author, 1968. 8 poems printed on varicolored packets containing seeds for California Native Flowers, Calendula, Carrots, Lettuce, Sweet Alyssum Royal Carpet, Squash, Shasta Daisy, and Parsley, held in a 6x7 inch photo-decorated folder of which the bottoms have been folded and glued to form pockets - the edges of these pockets have come unglued. Cover features three sweet sepia pix of a little girl in a garden. Although Brautigan printed 6,000 copies of this, his third and final self-published book, copies with all 8 packets are rare. (Our source, who helped put the packets together, tells us she never saw the mythical ninth packet of marijuana seeds).
