        Autograph letter signed

1968. Signed. HEPBURN, Katharine. Autograph letter signed. [France]: June 7th [1968]. One page of cream ""Katherine Houghton Hepburn"" letterhead, measuring 8-1/4 by 10-1/4 inches. $5000.Fine autograph letter signed from Katharine Hepburn to her friend Meta Stern, penned just two days after Robert Kennedy's assassination, anguishing over the tragedy, and mentioning Spencer Tracy.Autograph letter signed ""K–"", dated June 7th [1968], no place but while filming ""Madwoman of Chaillot"" in France, on ""Katharine Houghton Hepburn"" personal stationery. The letter is written to ""Meta,"" her friend Meta Stern, a script supervisor who worked with Hepburn while making ""Mary of Scotland"" in 1936. The letter reads in full: ""Dear Meta – No mail since May 17th. What a ghastly incredible mess – one's brain trembles at enormity of it – you & Sam must have been torn apart – such a ghastly waste – so full of hope & vision – one feels that all the catering to the wayward & the slothful & the squeaking wheels in our present philosophy is showing itself a sad mistake. We are working again – will go to Paris for a few days Thurs Fri Sat Sun – then back here & finish God willing. Mrs. T. (Spencer Tracy's wife) turned down me in the T.V. said she'd like to do it but without me narrating – just in it briefly as his costar – writing soon – K – Love to Sam & Murph."" Although Hepburn and Spencer Tracy were well known as both a professional and romantic couple, Tracy never divorced his wife because of their Catholic faith; after his death in 1967 (a year before this letter), Hepburn famously was not present at his funeral. Fine condition.

The Vernal Equinox is Your Equinox. .

17 1/2 x 23", offset printed in two colors. Large format color poster for a celebration of the Vernal Equinox in Golden Gate Park on March 20, 1968. The poster bears the legend Free City, and is likely the work of the Free City Collective, the name the Diggers assumed when they ceased calling themselves The Diggers the year prior. Mysteriously, we can find almost no references to this event, occuring just 5 days after the My Lai Massacre and on the same day as the Yippie Be-In in Grand Central Station on the other side of the United States. McKenna & Hollander note that the Free City Collective held a conference in late March to explore the concept of a "Free City", but we're unsure whether or not this event had any connection to that. The Free City Collective would disband after their Summer Solstice celebration in June of 1968. Some light creasing, a few short closed marginal tears and some faint staining, but otherwise a bright example. Scarce.

Seven Talismans: 7 Gravures En Coul. Sur Zinc.

[S.l.]:: Chez l'artiste, , 1968. . Limited edition of 50. Loose prints in a paper folder and laid into a stiff backed, string tied folder. . Fine/Fine. A suite of seven intaglio prints signed and dated by the artist in a folder/title page printed on Arches Velin paper. Images are approx. 3 x 4 inches on paper measuring approx. 10 x 12 inches. From the limitation page: "Printed in Paris in the autumn of 1968 by Leacouriere Frelaut, under the artist's supervision from his original intaglio-colograph zinc plates. The edition consists of 50 suites of seven prints numbered from 1/50 to 50/50, printed on Velin Arches paper." It goes on to mention an additional edition of 12 suites. This copy is signed by the artist below this declaration and numbered 29/50 in his hand. Each print is also signed and numbered by the artist just under each image. Finally, the Title folder is additionally inscribed: "For Sylvan Cole, who inspired Bernard to do this suite. Love, Judith. New York 4.xii.2001." Sylvan Cole was an art dealer in New York city during the era around WWII who is credited with virtually single handedly creating a market for prints at a time when they were considered not worthy of serious consideration. A great association. Contained in a string-tied folder of rust colored cloth over boards. Condition of the prints and folder containing them is Fine. Condition of the cloth outer folder is Very Good+ with a few faint scuffs and a sticker ghost on the upper right corner. Bernard Childs' paintings and prints have exhibited widely and reside in many institutional collections including the New York Public Library, the Fogg Art museum, Museum of Fine Arts Boston and numerous others.

Title page is present and notes: "Final February 26, 1969." General wear to the extremities, mostly at the yapped foredge which has multiple creases, near fine. The Academy Award-winning screenplay for the black comedy MASH written by Ring Lardner, Jr. and based on Richard Hooker's novel of the same name, which followed a group of doctors stationed with a mobile army hospital during the Korean War. The film was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland as surgeons negotiating the absurdities of war, which resonated with audiences during its release at the height of the Vietnam conflict. Though it was a difficult production with apparent friction between Altman, Lardner and many of the actors, the final film was an instant classic and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes. .

One Hundred Years of Solitude; Innocent Erendira; In Evil Hour; Chronicle of a Death Foretold; The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor; Clandestine in Chile; Love in the Time of Cholera. . .

NY and Bogota: Harper & Row, Knopf, LEC, Grupo Editorial Norma (1968-2005)., 1968. Gabriel Garcia Marquez Collection. 16 First editions all INSCRIBED: No One Writes to the An outstanding collection of 16 first editions of the Nobel Laureate all variously INSCRIBED to the collector, Richard Mattie by Garcia Marquez. No One Writes to the Colonel and Other Stories; One Hundred Years of Solitude; Innocent Erendira; In Evil Hour; Chronicle of a Death Foretold; The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor; Clandestine in Chile; Love in the Time of Cholera; The General in His Labyrinth; Strange Pilgrims; Love and Other Demons; News of a Kidnapping; Living to Tell the Tale; Memories of My Melancholy Whores; Vivir para contarla; One Hundred Years of Solitude LEC. This collection was put together by the highly resourceful Richard Mattie between the years of 1997 and 2005 with the assistance of a number of contacts in Mexico who had close connection with Garcia Marquez. All 16 books are personally inscribed to Mattie by Garcia Marquez, and, noteworthy, the copy of the LEC of One Hundred Years of Solitude is inscribed in English, "To Richard, from his Friend." and is signed and dated 1998. Garcia Marquez rarely inscribed in English. Mattie said that Garcia Marquez commented that this was the first time he signed this book. All the books are first American editions with the exception of Vivir para cotarla which is the true first in Spanish, the Columbian edition published by Grupo Editorial Norma, Bogota, 2002. As every serious Garcia Marquez collectors fully knows, there are a great many highly suspect "signed" Garcia Marquez books on the internet and purchasing any without impeccable, serious provenance is a risky venture at best. Mattie was so diligent in his documentation that he kept every letter, fax, postal receipt, wire, and email (all printed out fully) from this close to 9 year difficult collecting venture. This 1" thick folder, entitled by Mattie "The Gabriel Garcia Marquez File 1997-2005" is included with this collection. Never have I seen such minutely detailed provenance. As a collection of inscribed Garcia Marquez titles in English translation, this is as close to a sine qua non statement as a contemporary collector might hope to come. All the books From Chronicle of a Death Foretold forward through Memories of My Melancholy Whores are tight, fine books in bright, fine DJs with the exception of Strange Pilgrims which has slight cloth discoloration at the base of the book. No One Writes to the Colonel has a partial name erasure top of the front free endpaper and some top edge foxing, else very good plus in a bright first issue DJ with a minuscule closed tear bottom of front panel else fine. One Hundred Years of Solitude is the first edition book in the second issue DJ with a period end of the first front flap paragraph. There is a small contemporary inscription dated 1970 top of the half-title page in Spanish. The book has light cloth wear at the extremities else tight, near fine in a bright, price intact ($7.95) DJ with small fold tears top of front panel near the spinal gutter and at the base of spine (given the floral pattern, these are not very noticeable) with some clear tape reinforcements verso.. Inscribed by Author(s). 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
