        [Screenplay]: MASH

Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation and Aspen Productions. 1968. Screenplay. Quarto. 141pp. Brandbound in printed blue studio wrappers marked "Final Screenplay." Title page is present and notes: "Final February 26, 1969." General wear to the extremities, mostly at the yapped foredge which has multiple creases, near fine. The Academy Award-winning screenplay for the black comedy MASH written by Ring Lardner, Jr. and based on Richard Hooker's novel of the same name, which followed a group of doctors stationed with a mobile army hospital during the Korean War. The film was directed by Robert Altman and starred Elliott Gould and Donald Sutherland as surgeons negotiating the absurdities of war, which resonated with audiences during its release at the height of the Vietnam conflict. Though it was a difficult production with apparent friction between Altman, Lardner and many of the actors, the final film was an instant classic and was nominated for an Oscar for Best Picture and awarded the Palme d'Or at Cannes. .

Pop Music Expres: mesícník pro príznivce pop music [Pop Music Express: a monthly for pop music fans]. Vol. I, 1–9; Vol. II, 1–12; as well as the scarce “Foto” supplement (complete run).

Prague: Národní rada Juvena 1968 - Folded newsprint; 6–12 pp. each. About very good, with horizontal folds, some toning and occasional light fraying; most issues with small postal address label to cover. The scarce complete run of this rare monthly journal, which showcases the pop-music tastes of young Czechs with an energy and freedom unparalleled in the Czechoslovak Republic. Its short-lived publication was enabled by the relaxed censorship rules during the Prague Spring, the reform movement of 1968 that was stalled by the Soviet Invasion of Czechoslovakia in August that year. Created jointly by Prague’s music fan clubs and richly photo-illustrated, the magazine focuses on international as well as domestic representatives of Rock ‘n’ roll, British beat and other pop music genres, such as The Matadors (Prague) and The Bluesmen (Olomouc). Among foreign bands extensively covered were The Doors, The Rolling Stones, Jimi Hendrix and The Who. Wide coverage is also given to important Czech music festivals, such as the Second Czech Beat Festival in 1969. The issues of the first volume were largely designed by Kája Saudek (born 1935), a Czech comics artist since the 1960s, who was known for his ostentatious American style, which led the Communist authorities to label his work “bourgeois kitsch” and to prohibit many of his series. The last pages of vol. I feature, in serialized form, his original comic strip “Honza Hrom” (Johnny Thunder). Volume II features color and a more psychedelic style. PME was prominently featured in a recent exhibition on rock music and alternative visual culture in Czechoslovakia, curated by Zdenek Primus (“The Pope Smoked Dope”); see pp. 82: “Honza Hruza and Durdis, who ran the Efko, said they were going to start up a magazine. Saudek drew comics on the back page, large format, that was the beginning of 1968 or roundabout then. In Smíchov, where the Soviet liberation tank 23 used to be, that was where the office was. That mag was called the Pop Music Expres.” KVK, OCLC show only the copies at Olomouc State Library. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

San Francisco / Santa Barbara: Printed by Graham Mackintosh for the author, 1968. 8 poems printed on varicolored packets containing seeds for California Native Flowers, Calendula, Carrots, Lettuce, Sweet Alyssum Royal Carpet, Squash, Shasta Daisy, and Parsley, held in a 6x7 inch photo-decorated folder of which the bottoms have been folded and glued to form pockets - the edges of these pockets have come unglued. Cover features three sweet sepia pix of a little girl in a garden. Although Brautigan printed 6,000 copies of this, his third and final self-published book, copies with all 8 packets are rare. (Our source, who helped put the packets together, tells us she never saw the mythical ninth packet of marijuana seeds).

"The Gift" -- an episode of the TV show 'Steve Canyon'

Universal City, CA: Pegasus Productions Co., Inc, 1968. Front wrapper with upper corner torn and repaired with tape. 4to. 33 pp. Shooting script, clean and unmarked. Original printed front wrapper [no rear wrapper] closed with two contemporary brass clasps. SIDNEY CARROLL'S COPY, signed by him on the front wrapper and the first text leaf, and annotated in ink "Complete / Revised... 10/23/58." The series was written by Ray Bradbury and Sidney Carroll and directed by Don Taylor, which aired originally on Saturday December 20th 1958 at 9pm on NBC. It was never repeated in the United States. When ABC aired summer reruns of Steve Canyon in 1960, for some reason this one (and 13 others) never got shown. Considered a lost series for nearly 50 years, 'Steve Canyon' was made with the cooperation of the US Air Force and based on Milton Caniff's famous newspaper adventure comic strip of the same name that ran nonstop from 1947 to 1988. The Milton Caniff Estate released all 34 episodes on DVD in 2008-2013. A scarce survival from the studio, owned by famed scriptwriter Sidney Carroll.

        The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test

New York: Farrar, Strauss and Giroux, 1968. First edition of the classic account of Ken Kesey and the Merry Pranksters during their bus trip across America in the late 1960's. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Tom Wolfe with his characteristic signature on the title page. Additionally inscribed by prankster Ken Kesey on the front free endpaper. Also signed by 1960's counter-culture figures Larry McMurtry, Ken Babbs, Ralph Metzner, Ed McClanahan, Angela Davis and Leonard Cohen. Dust jacket design by Milton Glaser. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with just a touch of shelfwear. A unique example. The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test was published by Farrar Straus Giroux in 1968 and is considered ideal insight into the hippie movement. The New York Times said the novel is not simply the best book on the hippies, it is the essential book . . . the pushing, ballooning heart of the matter . . . Vibrating dazzle!" Indeed, "[a]mong journalists, Wolfe is a genuine poet; what makes him so good is his ability to get inside, to not merely describe (although he is a superb reporter), but to get under the skin of a phenomenon and transmit its metabolic rhythm" (Newsweek). The journalist himself is considered by Terry Southern "a groove and a gas. Everyone should send him money and other fine things. Hats off to Tom Wolfe!"

TO HEAL AND TO BUILD: The Programs of President Lyndon B. Johnson

New York: McGraw-Hill, 1968. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine/near fine. 8vo. Cloth. Near fine in like jacket. Jacket has touches rubbing, mild wear and toning at edges. SIGNED by Johnson on official Presidential bookplate presented to his lead pollster Fred Panzer. A warm association. Johnson was something of a reluctant signer and books genuinely inscribed by him are uncommon, with many secretarial examples misidentified.

Paris: Georges Visat, 1968. First edition. Arikha, Avigdor (1929-2010). Wrappers, in publisher's chemise and slipcase. One of 154 copies on Rives (total edition). Illustrated with six colored etchings by Avigdor Arikha, each signed. Fine. "The colored etchings for L'Issue reveal the subtle and intuitive feeling with which Arikha approaches Beckett's work," Mitchell, Beyond Illustration: The Livre d'Artist in the Twentieth Century, 53; "The etchings and aquatints in this volume are in Arikha's earlier abstract style. Dark and moody in feeling, they are reminiscent of Abstract Expressionism and visually convey the somber outlook of Beckett's literary vision," Johnson, Artists' Books in the Modern Era 1870-2000, 160.
