        Luristan Bronze Short Sword

[Persia - A classic Luristan bronze short sword with a crescent design from the early first millennium B.C. Measures approximately 15.75" x 2". The blade and handle cast as one piece, with a medial ridge running up the entire blade, and the handle flanged for inlays. Recovered from the Adriatic Sea by James Jones, author of *From Here to Eternity*. In the early 1960s Jones became interested in sea diving and related activities, which he used as the backdrop of his 1967 novel *Go to the Widow-Maker* (a work which, when praised at all, was praised for its underwater scenes). The sword, made by the Indo-Iranian Lurs in south-western Iran, dates from the Iranian Iron age, famous for its bronze artifacts. A particularly fine piece, well preserved with a smooth green patina, perfectly balanced and formed to the palm of one's hand.

12 Photographs from the New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale Concert, with additional related photographs

[San Francisco] 1967 - A collection of snapshots taken at the New Year's Wail concert on January 1, 1967 at the Panhandle near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, with some accompanying images. Various sizes. Condition is overall good with tape remnants or shadows mostly in the margins, but the images mostly pretty clear. Several are captioned. The show, entitled "The New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale" was organized by the Hells Angels as a thank you, and a celebration of the Haight Ashbury community for "crowdfunding" the bail money for their member Chocolate George after a traffic arrest. The Diggers helped to promote the event which featured Big Brother and The Grateful Dead (as well as of Orkustra with Bobby Beausoleil, later of the Manson Family). The bands played on a flatbed truck, and the photographer was clearly very close to the bands, probably on the truck itself. Of the dozen candid photographs of the concert, all but one (the only color image, of some Hells Angels and their bikes in the crowd) feature the bands: Joplin appears in at least eight of them, and Jerry Garcia in three, with other shots of other band members in various combinations. Also accompanied by several other images: two color images of Joplin singing, date stamped in May 1967, have damage to the margins, although the images of Joplin are largely clear. Also with a color photo of a psychedelically-decorated hippie crash pad, as well as another 14 images of several young men, presumably the photographer and his friends: one with a motorcycle, several in military garb sitting on a dock smoking pot, one on a ship's deck, and several overseas in Thailand and the Phillipines.

Very Good./Good -.. np (48pp), 34 b&w photographs (1 die-cut and folded). In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. "Thirtyfour Parking Lots in Los Angeles" is Ed Ruscha's fifth photographically illustrated artist book, and the largest in format of his self-published works of the sixties. A bright, most handsome example of the uncommon 1968 first edition (entry B5 in Siri Engberg's "Edward Ruscha: Editions 1959-1999" which is also cited on page 141 of Martin Parr and Gerry Badger's "The Photobook: A History Volume II", pages 198-201 of The Hasselblad Center's "The Open Book", and page 227 of "From Fair to Fine 3") limited to two thousand, two hundred and thirteen unnumbered copies showing a minute margin of age-toning along the top edge of the front cover.         Planet of the Apes. Final Revised Screenplay

Apjac Productions for Twentieth Century-Fox 1967 - 144 pages, Mimeographed on "eye-rest green" paper, brad-bound in mimeographed orange wrappers. "Final Revised Screenplay", dated on the cover April 18, 1967, with two blue revised pages dated 4/20 and 4/24. The cover is also marked with the legend "Confidential. Please do not reveal the contents of this script." A rare copy of this late revision, complete with the surprise ending, which was kept secret and not included in most copies of the script. Wilson had been been blacklisted in the 1950s for being a communist and was only belatedly credited for some of his most important work (e.g. Friendly Persuasion (1956), and The Bridge on the River Kwai (1957), like Planet of the Apes adapted from a Pierre Boulle novel.         Lovely Grace Kelly TLS to Leonard Lyons on the Grand Prix in Monaco

Monaco: , January 30, 1967. Monaco, January 30, 1967. 6" x 7.5". "Single page TLS, on stationary with Royale letterhead, 6"" x 7.5"". Signed and dated by Princess Grace (Grace Kelly), as ""Grace"", and dated ""January 30, 1967"". Light creasing to one corner, else near fine.A lovely letter by Grace Kelly to Leonard Lyons, an American newspaper columnist who travelled the world and sent back daily columns, sometimes giving his column to New York bound travelers with a request that they contact the paper upon arrival. He avoided writing about scandal in his column, and thus earned the trust of the many figures he met. Grace Kelly's letter to him thanked him for the newspaper clipping and noted she was sending him photos for his newspaper files. She also inquired if he was coming to the ""Grand Prix"" held in Monaco. Their exchanges and her ease to send him photos and information demonstrate the incredible rapport and trust she had in him as a newspaper columnist. Her letter to him is shown in full below:'""Dear Leonard,January 30, 1967Thank you for sending the clippings to us, which we enjoyed reading. I am sending you, however, some new photographs for your newspaper's files, as the one constantly used in your column is rather old and not one of my best! Will you get over for the Grand Prix?Warm regards,GraceMr. Leonard Lyons""The Monaco Grand Prix referred to by Grace Kelly is a Formula One motor race held each year on the Circuit de Monaco. Run since 1929, it is widely considered to be one of the most important and prestigious automobile races in the world, and with the Indianapolis 500, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans forms the Triple Crown of Motorsport. The circuit has been called ""an exceptional location of glamour and prestige"".The race is held on a narrow course laid out in the streets of Monaco, with many elevation changes and tight corners as well as a tunnel, making it one of the most demanding tracks in Formula One. In spite of the relatively low average speeds, it is a dangerous place to race and often involves the intervention of a safety car. It is the only Grand Prix that does not adhere to the FIS's mandated 305 kilometre (190 mile) minimum race distance.Princess Grace Kelly was known for her incredible regal presence and serenity. Her wonderful warm letter to Leonard evokes both. Her tragic accidental passing in 1982, at the young age of 52, leaves little in the way of signed pieces by her, with this example in wonderful highly collectible condition."

Alden & Landis 745/34; Sabin 10234; STCN (1 copy, incomplete); WorldCat (5 copies, incl. same incomplete copy); cf. Hanke, History of Latin American Civilization (1967), p. 529. Rare second issue of the first and only edition of a Dutch translation of A concise history of the Spanish America (1741), by the prolific Scottish author John Campbell (1708-1775). The work is divided into 4 parts, the first on the discovery of America, the second on the Spanish settlement in North America, the third a description of South America, and the fourth on the trade with America. The second and third part contain chapters on Buenos Aires, California, Charcas, Chile, Cuba, Florida, Guatemala, Lima, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Panama, Tucuman Province and Quito."Grub Street provided some indifferent manuals, of which the most informative - despite its author's capacity, if Boswell is to be believed, for drinking thirteen bottles of port at a sitting - was A concise history of the Spanish America , published by Dr. John Campbell in 1741" (Hanke) . It contains 4 maps, not included in the original English editions. With modern bookplate on pastedown and an earlier owner's name covered with opaque white. The sides of the binding were apparently never covered with paper, leaving the roughly cut ends of the sheepskin clearly visible. Binding slightly rubbed, lacking back endpapers and front flyleaf; title-page loosening. Internally in very good condition.
