np: np [Penny Press?], nd [1967]. First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. Near fine in original stiff printed stapled wraps. Offset printed. Toning to spine, as common. Penned price (.50) to upper right corner of front cover. Else clean, sharp, and sound. Near fine. Carroll's first book, self-published when he was still in high school. The beginning of a remarkably varied career. Though better known for his cult memoir THE BASKETBALL DIARIES and eponymous punk band, poetry was Carroll's most sustained creative endeavor. And this volume served as his introduction to many of the writers and artists of the New York scene who would go on to be close friends and collaborators. Kerouac famously wrote of Carroll, "At 13 years of age [he] writes better prose than 89% of the novelists working today." A somewhat bibliographically murky book. Several sources attribute the book to "Penny Press," but we have been unable to trace this claim to any primary source. Such confusion may be due to the book's scarcity. One of about 500 copies, but according to Carroll’s official website (citing the author himself), many were lost by the printer. We've been able to find only a few at auction or in the trade and OCLC locates just 8 copies. An important debut.

        The Gnadiges Fraulein

New York: Dramatists Play Service, Inc, 1967. Fine. First edition, first issue. Stapled printed wrappers. A small tear on the title page, probably torn when the book was inscribed, else fine in wrappers. One of 1000 copies printed. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To my dearest girl in the USA. Love, Tennessee." In Williams' Memoirs he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association.

Sketchbook with 148 full page drawings of female nudes on one side of the page.

Berkeley: 1967. - 10.5 x 8 inches. Pencil, ink and charcoal drawings of nudes. At the beginning of each series is the name of the model and dates of sitting, including Janet Eiten, Carol Saunders, Marthena Bosch, Jane Kithcell, Virginia Langford. Provenance: Estate of the artist.James Steward - exhibition notes 1996.When Berkeley-based artist Edward Hagedorn died in 1982, few members of the Bay Area art-going public would have known of his work. Although he lived in the Bay Area for eighty years, after much early success the eccentric and idealistic Hagedorn, troubled by personal shyness, ceased to exhibit his work publicly in the late 1930s. Yet he remained obsessed with creating images of primal force. Despite living the last thirty years of his life as a virtual recluse-described by an artist colleague as a "walking question mark with no use for success"-he left behind him a remarkable body of work that is only now coming to be known. This work suggests that it is fair to appraise Hagedorn as the most important Expressionist artist to have come out of California.Born in San Francisco in 1902, Hagedorn enrolled at the San Francisco Art Association by the age of sixteen, and then around 1923 to 1925 at the California School of Fine Arts, where his teachers included artists who had been profoundly influenced by the Armory Show and who had even participated in the Pan-Pacific Exposition.Hagedorn exhibited frequently throughout the late 1920s and '30s with members of the "Society of Six," even winning honors from the Brooklyn Museum and the Pennsylvania Academy, sharing their Fauvist-influenced, Expressionist aesthetic. However he resisted frequent overtures from dealers and curators that might have brought him increased acclaim. Enabled in part by the inheritance of substantial means from his maternal family, Hagedorn abruptly ceased to show his work publicly in the late 1930s. The spirit went out of much of his work from about 1940, and although Hagedorn continued to make art throughout most of his life, it often devolved into trivializing depictions of the female nude.
