London: Faber & Faber, 1967. First Edition. Stiff Wraps. Fine-. First Paperbound Printing (issued the same day as the hardcover edition) of Stoppard's first published play, elaborating the lives of two characters from Shakespeare's "Tragedy of Hamlet," in which Rosencrantz and Guildenstern wait behind the scenes, whiling away their time on the fringes of the play. Slim 8vo: 96pp. Publisher's French blue and pink card wrappers (priced 6s/6d) printed in black, with French flaps over stiff card covers. Signed by Stoppard on title page. "The action of Stoppard's play takes place mainly 'in the wings' of Shakespeare's, with brief appearances of major characters from Hamlet who enact fragments of the original's scenes. Between these episodes the two protagonists voice their confusion at the progress of events of which-occurring onstage without them in Hamlet-they have no direct knowledge." (Wikipedia) Rosencrantz and Guildenstern had its first incarnation, in 1964, as a one-act, "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Meet King Lear." The expanded version under the current title was first staged at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe on 24 August 1966, by the Oxford Theatre Group. It debuted in London with a National Theatre production at the Old Vic. Awarded the New York Drama Critics Circle winner for Best Play, in 1968. Stoppard adapted the play for the 1990 movie of the same name, directed by Stoppard and starring Gary Oldman, Richard Dreyfuss, Joanna Roth, and Ian Richardson. N. B.         The journals of Captain James Cook on his voyages of discovery. [I. The voyage of the Endeavour, 1768-1771; II. The voyage of the Resolution and Discovery, 1776-1780; III. pt 1-2. The voyage of the Resolution and Discovery , 1776-1780; IV. The life of Captain James Cook].

Cambridge Hakluyt Society C.U.P. 1968 19691974 1967 - 4 volumes in 5, royal 8vo, 1 volume portfolio atlas, with 2 addenda and corigenda booklets, numerous maps and illustrations throughout, original blue cloth gilt, light soiling and chipping to wrappers, an excellent set. Hakluyt Society extra series 34a, 34b, 35, 36a, 36b, 37. This publication represents the first time that Cook's journals were comprehensively and accurately presented to the public, and to do so required enormous research since copies and fragments of the journals and related material were scattered in various archives in London, Australia and New Zealand. For his edition, Beaglehole sought out the various surviving holographs in Cook's own hand in preference to copies by his clerks on board ship, and others. As well as Cook's own journals Beaglehole also printed, either entire or in lengthy extracts, the journals of several of Cook's colleagues on the voyages. The introductions themselves, together with copious footnotes, reveal the breadth of his erudition. They cover many topics, ranging from the structure of Polynesian society to oceanography, navigation, cartography, and much else. Hill 86 (Life) & 367. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton on the set of "The Lion in Winter" (1967)

N.p.: N.p., 1967. Vintage oversize double weight photograph of Peter O'Toole, Katharine Hepburn, Anthony Hopkins, and Timothy Dalton hosting a feast in a scene from "The Lion in Winter". Shot, struck, and mounted by the film's still photographer, Bob Willoughby. The photographer has written at the top of the verso, in holograph pencil: "B.W.-16." Also with Willoughby's ASMP rubber stamp showing his New York address, a reference number, and a 1967 copyright date. Full provenance available.Winner of three Academy Awards, including Best Screenplay, and nominated for four others, including Best Picture, Best Actor (O'Toole), and Best Director. Shot on location in France, Ireland, and Wales. After studying with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, Willoughby began working as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar" in the late 1940s. It was while on assignment covering Judy Garland in a "A Star is Born" that Willoughby's ability to capture his subjects' spontaneity, humor, and vulnerability, resulting in images that were far different from more traditional film stills, came to Hollywood's attention and earned him his first "Life" magazine cover. Willoughby spent the next 20-plus years working as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Technically and stylistically innovative, Willoughby built the first remote radio-controlled cameras used on film sets, pioneered the use of the "silent blimp" for 35mm cameras, and created brackets to mount his cameras directly over the movie cameras to capture the same images.Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s, though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. The stills in this collection were given by Willoughby to friends in Kilbrittain, Ireland just prior to his move to Vence, France in 1989, where he would remain until his death in 2009.Perhaps more than any other photographer, Willoughby is responsible for creating the the look of mid-century celebrity and moviemaking in the popular imagination, with his images printed in magazines literally every week of his career. But beyond being prolific, Willoughby's legacy rests with his ability capture the essence of the actors he photographed, as well as the films with which those photographs were associated. As Sydney Pollack said in his introduction to Willoughby's autobiography, "Sometimes a filmmaker gets a look at a photograph taken on his own set and sees the 'soul' of his film in one still photograph. It's rare, but it happens. It happened to me in 1969, the first time I looked at the work of Bob Willoughby during the filming of "They Shoot Horses, Don't They?"Willoughby's photographs are in the permanent collections of ten museums, including The National Portrait Galleries in Washington, DC and London, the Bibliotheque Nationale de France, The Museum of Modern Art, and The Tate Modern.14 x 9 inches (36 x 23 cm). Near Fine.

np: np [Penny Press?], nd [1967]. First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. Near fine in original stiff printed stapled wraps. Offset printed. Toning to spine, as common. Penned price (.50) to upper right corner of front cover. Else clean, sharp, and sound. Near fine. Carroll's first book, self-published when he was still in high school. The beginning of a remarkably varied career. Though better known for his cult memoir THE BASKETBALL DIARIES and eponymous punk band, poetry was Carroll's most sustained creative endeavor. And this volume served as his introduction to many of the writers and artists of the New York scene who would go on to be close friends and collaborators. Kerouac famously wrote of Carroll, "At 13 years of age [he] writes better prose than 89% of the novelists working today." A somewhat bibliographically murky book. Several sources attribute the book to "Penny Press," but we have been unable to trace this claim to any primary source. Such confusion may be due to the book's scarcity. One of about 500 copies, but according to Carroll’s official website (citing the author himself), many were lost by the printer. We've been able to find only a few at auction or in the trade and OCLC locates just 8 copies. An important debut.

        The Gnadiges Fraulein

New York: Dramatists Play Service, Inc, 1967. Fine. First edition, first issue. Stapled printed wrappers. A small tear on the title page, probably torn when the book was inscribed, else fine in wrappers. One of 1000 copies printed. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To my dearest girl in the USA. Love, Tennessee." In Williams' Memoirs he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association.
