        Angry Arts

NY: Angry Arts. 1967. Ephemeral pieces documenting the Week of the Angry Arts Against the War in Vietnam (January 29-February 5), which included protest performances by artists, musicians, actors, dancers, filmmakers, writers and poets. Included is the schedule of events; an invitation to the Line Dance for Life, with a call for participants in The Maze; a press release on the "Black Death" Midnight Mass; a rehearsal announcement for the Vietnam Life Project; participant guidelines for the Vietnam Life Project; a broadside solicitation of support for Broadway Dissents; a broadsheet poster listing the Dance Protest events at Hunter Playhouse; a program for Carolee Shneemann's kinetic theater piece "Snows;" a broadside announcement of an unspecified event to take place at midnight, February 3rd at St. Marks and Second Avenue; the full page ad for the Week of Angry Arts in the New York Times; a 2-page handout on the existence of bubonic plague in Vietnam, which may or may not be related to the week's events; and, lastly, a form letter of thanks to those responding to requests for support, the verso of which lists some of the artists involved or sympathetic: among the writers listed are Susan Sontag, Allen Ginsberg, Philip Roth, Galway Kinnell, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, Donald Barthelme, Robert Bly, Louise Bogan, Hortense Calisher, David Ignatow, Dwight Macdonald, Grace Paley, and many others. Among the performers listed as participating in events during the week are Meredith Monk, Ruby Dee, Alan Alda, Jules Feiffer, Aldo Tambellini, Saul Gottlieb, The Fugs, and many more. Several of the sheets are folded and/or sunned; the New York Times ad has a tear at the center fold; the lot is near fine. Scarce ephemeral materials for an important event in mobilizing opposition to the Vietnam war, before the antiwar movement had spread out widely to the middle class and beyond. Such early opposition to the war tended to be centered within the communities of artists, the intelligentsia, the Old Left and the New Left, and this week, which includes such headings as "Broadway Dissents," "Off-Broadway Dissents," "Dancers Dissent," "Folk Rock Dissents" and even "Avant Garde Musicians Dissent" shows the political engagement of the artistic community, particularly those at the cutting edge, in mobilizing against the war and rallying their audiences and constituencies against it. Angry Arts continued with events in June and spread as far as Los Angeles in promoting antiwar artistic performances. . First Edition.

A Lovely Way to Die (Original screenplay for the 1967 film)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1967. Final Script for the 1967 film, "A Lovely Way to Die," directed by David Lowell Rich, written for the screen by A.J. Russell, and starring Kirk Douglas and Eli Wallach. & & An important transitional crime film, borrowing the "hard-boiled cop turns in his badge and does things his way" theme that was introduced during the film noir era (e.g., "Rogue Cop," "The Big Heat") and transitioning it to the color film era, predicting a new kind of film that would come in the early 1970s, the most notable example being "Dirty Harry." In this case, the cop is Kirk Douglas, with Eli Wallach in a typically fascinating role as a disarming but ruthlessly effective private investigator. The titular opening song is delivered by Jackie Wilson, and this was the film debut of Ali McGraw. & & Red studio wrappers, stamped FINAL SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, and dated May 2, 1967. Title page present, noting that the original working title was "The Pineapple Print," with a credit for screenwriter Russell. A "rainbow copy," 135 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with green, blue, pink, and yellow revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

        Do it yourself

München: Galerie Stangl, 1967. Livre. Illus. by Horst Antes. Très bon. reliure en spirale. Edition originale. In-plano.

Exceptionnel.

DIARY OF A MAD HOUSEWIFE. Signed

New York: Random House, 1967 A significant presentation. First Edition. 8vo., 313pp. Very good or better in a near fine, fresh dustwrapper. This outstanding copy inscribed on the front free endpaper to the woman who inspired this work: "To Mabel Frohlich / who is the model / for my heroine. / Sue Kaufman". As there is no formal printed dedicatee, this particular presentation comes about as close to the mark as we're going to get. An important 60's title, which shared the morphing cultural & cinematic stage & screen with "The Graduate".. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Ritual --- Murder, Witchcraft and Paganism in a Cornish Village ---- Filmed as The Wicker Man

London: Hutchinson / New Authors Limited, 1967, 1st Edition, 1st Printing -----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket with a tiny bit of rubbing to the edges, a beautiful clean bright example of the Peter Edwards designed dustjacket, very scarce book, later filmed and released as The Wicker Man which was novelized by Robin Hardy, and Anthony Shaffer, however, this is not the novelization ---this is the book from which the film was created, from the cover of the later paperback edition, "A child lies dead in the Cornish village of Thorn, the circumstances point to a ritual killing. But when detective Inspector david Hanlin is sent from London to investigate the matter, he discovers that Thorn has sinister and erotic undertones; murmurs of witchcraft and whispers of occult happenings; as well as a Midsummer Eve ritual that stems from a pagan past.", ---a strange book with episodes of blatant sexuality, paranoia, witchcraft, murder, etc., extremely well written although the climax, ultimately is not very surprising, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo . First Edition. Hard Cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Illus. by Peter Edwards Cover Art.

Paris, 1967. Dessin. Illus. by Roland Topor. Très bon. Aucune reliure. In-8. 19,8 x 14,8 cm.

        Lord of Light

Doubleday, 1967. First Edition (first printing). The third novel by the author of THE DREAM MASTER and DAMNATION ALLEY, the story of a band of men who have gained control of the technology to make themselves immortal -- and rule their world as gods of the Hindu religion. Winner of the Hugo Award and nominated for the Nebula Award. Near Fine/Fine. A nice copy of the book but for four very light "tape" ghosts -- hard to see, but two to the front board and two to the rear and one lightly bumped corner. A little "waviness" to two pages (pp. 237-240) but no signs of moisture or staining. The dust jacket is bright and clean with one very thin short tape shadow to the obverse side. Makes a brilliant outward appearance. From the Larry Owens collection. . 1st Edition. Hardcover. Near Fine/Fine.

        V. & H. V. Rolland's Illustrations To The Armorial General (3 Volumes)

London, UK.: Heraldry Today. Good. 1967. Hardcover. Quarto - 28 x 21.5 cm.; Unpaginated. Blue cloth with gilt lettering on spine. Reproduced from the 1903 -1926 edition, this is the reprint (1000 copies) from 1967. The work took all of 23 years to complete with over 85,000 shields of Arms illustrating every Arms mentioned in the "Armorial General". 500 copies were printed in 1954 (Lyons) of which very few remain. In addition to the actual Arms illustrations, Volume I contains a preface, key to English, German, Spanish and Italian texts with a 7 page illustrated guide to the vocabulary of armorial design and layout with a one page Table of Abbreviations. In Volume 1, (I & II, A-F) there are 376 plates with 48 Arms per plate with the exception of the plates that are at the end or beginning of a particular letter sequence . Volume 2, (III & IV, G-O) has 331 plates with 48 Arms per plate with the same exception as noted above. Volume 3, (V & VI, P-Z) has 217 plates with 48 Arms per plate with the same exception. The working text is in French. The externals of all 3 volumes are scuffed and rubbed with bumped corners. The books are quite heavy and all exhibit slight play in the front and rear hinges with a repair having been made to the front hinge of volume 1. The binding is not strong enough to support the text block in its case as there is no mull cloth connecting spine to boards with the hinge being dependant solely on the end papers. A massive amount of work and then to be not properly bound, ah well, such is life. .

A Near Fine copy of the first American edition, first printing (quite slightly askew, light edge wear), in a Very Good + to Near Fine dust jacket [spine lightly darkened, minor soiling to panels, minor age toning as is common to this jacket, light edge wear, and a touch of pushing at the spine head and top of front flap, quite short tears where each panel meets the spine head, the rear flap lacks laminate at the edge --- a presumed production defect as every jacket we have seen for this book is alike in this respect); three short stories of Mikhail Sholokhov, winner of the 1965 Nobel Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY MIKHAIL SHOLOKHOV on the title page. Signed copies of Sholokhov's work in English translation are quite scarce. The book itself is rather scarce in collectable condition and this dust jacket is easily the nicest we ever have seen.         Nihon

Tokyo: Shaken, 1967. Very close to fine in silver boards and the complete publisher's acetate jacket, which has slightly lifted on the rear panel. Nice copy of a book that deserves more attention than it gets.. First Edition. Square quarto. A bleak assessment of sixties Japan by one of its foremost photographers. More understated than his Provoke counterparts, Tomatsu nonetheless offers a searing indictment of modern Japan gone awry: from the aftermath of a typhoon, to scarred walls and distressed roads, with an end section of protest and Okinawa images which are paradoxically the most optimistic images in the book, though I doubt this was Tomatsu's intent. Although not stated in the book, this copy comes from the library of noted Japanese photographer Kishin Shinoyama. (Aperture 94-101).
