        More Papers Hand Made by John Mason

      Leicester: Twelve by Eight Press and Paper Mill, 1967. Quarto. 35ff., + 36ff. specimens of Mason's paper, some printed with illustrations by Rigby Graham. A special copy, bearing an additional "thread drawing" by Graham. Signed and dated "Leicester 1970" by John Mason on the colophon. A collection of paper made by hand at the Twelve by Eight Paper Mill in Leicester, England, during the end of Mason's long career. Mason wrote, "These papers I had printed by a number of outstanding craftsmen. Commenced in 1958, the first copies were not completed until the end of 1965." The table of contents lists the materials composing the papers (for example, "wallflower and parsley stems" and "some romantic old bed sheets -- we can tell no more") as well as the printers and illustrators. Immaculately bound in vellum boards, with "12x8" gilt stamped in a cinquefoil. First two leaves have a one-inch closed tear to fore-edge, else fine in gilt-stamped chemise, which shows minor soiling to the cover. Printed keepsake with illustrations by Rigby Graham laid in.

      New York: Dial Press, 1967. . First printing. . Near fine in a very near fine dust jacket (slight shelfwear and a bit of fading to the boards, small spot to upper edge of textblock, but overall much better condition than this is usually found - especially the rather fragile dustjacket which is white and unmarked.) . Dubus's first - and only full-length - novel, a story of military life in peacetime, but in essence about the conflict between idealism and expediency. Dubus served for 5 years in the US Marines and knew well the world of which he was writing. In comments quoted on the back cover, Richard Yates described this as a 'fine, tense, wholly absorbing novel. You can read it at one sitting and miss none of its power, but it deserves to be studied for the skill of its construction and the complexity of its interlocking ironies.' SIGNED on the title page and uncommon thus.

        In a Piegan Lodge [Pl. 188]

      [Boston: D. Sacilotto for Charles Lauriat's: 1967]. Photogravure by Curtis, finely printed from the original plate, on wove paper watermarked "Tweedweave", by the master printmaker D. Sacilotto. A rare edition, not to be confused with later restrikes. A fine print, the beauty and quality of which rivals that of the original plates.(Small discrete collection stamp outside of plate mark on verso.) Very good condition apart from some mild rippling. 13 5/8 x 17 3/8 inches. 22 1/4 x 16 1/2 inches. A breath- taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on American Indians, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. "Little Plume with his son Yellow Kidney occupies the position of honor, the space at the rear opposite the entrance. The picture is full of suggestion of the various Indian activities. In a prominent place lie the ever-present pipe and its accessories on the tobacco cutting-board. From the lodge- poles hang the buffalo-skin shield, the long medicine- bundle, an eagle- wing fan, and a deerskin articles for accoutering the horse. The upper end of the rope is attached to the intersection of the lodge-poles, and in stormy weather the lower end is made fast to a stake near the centre of the floor space." (Curtis, List of Large Plates Supplementing Volume Six) A subgroup of the Blackfoot tribe, the Piegan are of Algonquin stock and inhabited the Plains and Prairies region of North America. They were the quintessential Plains Indians, and in his notes, Curtis described them as amiable people, who had a propensity for social formalities and were easy to work with. The original edition of Curtis' The North American Indian had 214 subscribers and Curtis himself handled the distribution. After Curtis declared bankruptcy, the booksellers Charles Lauriat's of Boston purchased the outstanding stock, and the edition from which this print comes was commissioned in order to complete a number of incomplete portfolios. According to information supplied by the printers, the edition was strictly limited with only 17 sets being produced. Edward Curtis was fascinated with the story of the American Indian from an early age, honing both his knowledge of them and his skill as a photographer on numerous scientific expeditions in the 1890s. With the enthusiastic backing of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword), Curtis evolved his plan for a comprehensive work that would illustrate his romantic vision of American Indian life before the disastrous impact of European contact. He obtained the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan, whose support (and later, that of his son) enabled the project to go forward. What had originally been projected to take five or six years stretched to twenty-three, consumed $1,200,000 (a third in subsidy from the Morgans), and finally reached a conclusion in 1930, leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Ephemeral pieces documenting the Week of the Angry Arts Against the War in Vietnam (January 29-February 5), which included protest performances by artists, musicians, actors, dancers, filmmakers, writers and poets. Included is the schedule of events; an invitation to the Line Dance for Life, with a call for participants in The Maze; a press release on the "Black Death" Midnight Mass; a rehearsal announcement for the Vietnam Life Project; participant guidelines for the Vietnam Life Project; a broadside solicitation of support for Broadway Dissents; a broadsheet poster listing the Dance Protest events at Hunter Playhouse; a program for Carolee Shneemann's kinetic theater piece "Snows;" a broadside announcement of an unspecified event to take place at midnight, February 3rd at St. Marks and Second Avenue; the full page ad for the Week of Angry Arts in the New York Times; a 2-page handout on the existence of bubonic plague in Vietnam, which may or may not be related to the week's events; and, lastly, a form letter of thanks to those responding to requests for support, the verso of which lists some of the artists involved or sympathetic: among the writers listed are Susan Sontag, Allen Ginsberg, Philip Roth, Galway Kinnell, Denise Levertov, Robert Duncan, Donald Barthelme, Robert Bly, Louise Bogan, Hortense Calisher, David Ignatow, Dwight Macdonald, Grace Paley, and many others. Among the performers listed as participating in events during the week are Meredith Monk, Ruby Dee, Alan Alda, Jules Feiffer, Aldo Tambellini, Saul Gottlieb, The Fugs, and many more. Several of the sheets are folded and/or sunned; the New York Times ad has a tear at the center fold; the lot is near fine. Scarce ephemeral materials for an important event in mobilizing opposition to the Vietnam war, before the antiwar movement had spread out widely to the middle class and beyond. Such early opposition to the war tended to be centered within the communities of artists, the intelligentsia, the Old Left and the New Left, and this week, which includes such headings as "Broadway Dissents," "Off-Broadway Dissents," "Dancers Dissent," "Folk Rock Dissents" and even "Avant Garde Musicians Dissent" shows the political engagement of the artistic community, particularly those at the cutting edge, in mobilizing against the war and rallying their audiences and constituencies against it. Angry Arts continued with events in June and spread as far as Los Angeles in promoting antiwar artistic performances. . First Edition.

Signed and numbered with an engraving needle to the verso lower left by Warhol. Published to commemorate the Fifth New York Film Festival at Lincoln Center, New York. From the estate of Amos Vogel, founder of Cinema 16, the groundbreaking film society founded in 1947, advertising Films You Cannot See Elsewhere, which could include avant-garde shorts next to a documentary about South American ants. When cinema 16 shut it's doors in 1963, Vogel went on to co-found the New York Film Festival with Richard Roud.

      Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1967. Final Script for the 1967 film, "A Lovely Way to Die," directed by David Lowell Rich, written for the screen by A.J. Russell, and starring Kirk Douglas and Eli Wallach. & & An important transitional crime film, borrowing the "hard-boiled cop turns in his badge and does things his way" theme that was introduced during the film noir era (e.g., "Rogue Cop," "The Big Heat") and transitioning it to the color film era, predicting a new kind of film that would come in the early 1970s, the most notable example being "Dirty Harry." In this case, the cop is Kirk Douglas, with Eli Wallach in a typically fascinating role as a disarming but ruthlessly effective private investigator. The titular opening song is delivered by Jackie Wilson, and this was the film debut of Ali McGraw. & & Red studio wrappers, stamped FINAL SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, and dated May 2, 1967. Title page present, noting that the original working title was "The Pineapple Print," with a credit for screenwriter Russell. A "rainbow copy," 135 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with green, blue, pink, and yellow revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

Parmi 145 exemplaires numérotés sur vergé de Fabriano, L'un des 120 ex. numérotés et nominatifs ? à M. Sandoz, serait-ce Maurice ? Chacun des trois recueils de poèmes de cette édition collective, la première illustrée, est imprimé sur un papier de différente teinte (gris, beige et bistre). Exemplaire bien complet de l'affiche multicolore pliée en quatre et qui habille les étuis, enrichi de 4 plaques des cuivres originaux. Ces dernières correspondent aux planches des pages 18, 20, 39 ainsi que la double page 82-83. Chacun de ces cuivres contient les remarques ( il n'en a été tiré que 10 exemplaires de suites), dont on retiendra plus particulièrement un portrait de Cendrars et un de Charlot. Curieusement, les remarques de la double planche sont insérées dans le trou qui "relie" l'illustration de la page de gauche à celle de droite. Exceptionnel.

      [Boston]: [Hillside Press], [1967]. First Edition. Hardcover. About Fine. Chapters 2 & 3 of Genesis from the Old Testament. Folio (13- 1/8" x 16-1/8") bound in quarter blue patterned cloth and light blue-gray Fabriano paper boards. Designed, illustrated with original wood engravings, and hand-printed on double-fold Japanese Masa paper by Michael McCurdy, his first commercially produced book. The colophon states that the book was produced in 1965-1966, but there is a small engraved Hillside Press logo with the 1967 date pasted below that. The entire edition consisted of only 20 copies, of which 15 were for sale. This copy has a Penmaen Press envelope containing a typed description of the book: "This book is without label on front panel. Colophon says HILLSIDE PRESS, pasted over PENDEL PRESS imprint. 1965-6." Also noted in pencil on this paper is that this copy is one of four in McCurdy's possession. With the bookplate of noted press collector Carl Sutton on the front pastedown.

But when detective Inspector david Hanlin is sent from London to investigate the matter, he discovers that Thorn has sinister and erotic undertones; murmurs of witchcraft and whispers of occult happenings; as well as a Midsummer Eve ritual that stems from a pagan past.", ---a strange book with episodes of blatant sexuality, paranoia, witchcraft, murder, etc., extremely well written although the climax, ultimately is not very surprising, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo . Professionally framed; possibly laid down (not examined out of frame); sight condition Fine (A). & & Anti-church propaganda poster, with the dramatic image of a Soviet woman ripping a crucifix from her neck, thus "lighting her way" to real knowledge. A commentary not only upon the tension between Orthodox religion and State Communism, but also on the limited recognition of women's autonomy in the traditional Church structure. A stylized Sputnik glides past in the background.& & Alfred Saldre (1923-2008) was a noted Estonian graphic artist, illustrator, and set designer. He was the winner of the 1962 All-Soviet Poster Competition as well as a number of other major awards from the 1950s-80s; his work is held by several Russian and Estonian institutions. An uncommon poster, never intended for export; this a beautifully-preserved example.

      Paris, 1967. Dessin. Illus. by Roland Topor. Très bon. Aucune reliure. In-8. 19,8 x 14,8 cm. Encre et lavis d'encre sur papier à carreaux. Au verso, une annotation de la main de Jean-Michel Folon attribuant le dessin à Topor, le datant (1967) et le situant rue de l'Echaudé (le domicile parisien de Folon à l'époque). Topor et Folon étaient des amis très proches. Aucun doute n'est possible sur l'authenticité du dessin : si son style est quelque peu surprenant, notamment en raison de l'usage du lavis, le trait et l'humour sont caractéristiques. De même l'écriture de Folon est typique et inimitable. On notera que Folon écrit le nom de Topor exactement comme ce dernier signe et nous avons cru un moment que le dessin était signé de lui, mais nous avons pu depuis vérifier ce phénomène sur un manuscrit de Folon consacré à son ami. Bel état. (Sur la photo nous avons déplacé l'annotation du verso au recto. Voir notre référence n° 3506 pour une belle collaboration entre Topor et Folon.).
