        Calling Life's Signals + 42 player & coach signatures 1968 Shriner East West Game + 1968 Street & Smith's Official Yearbook

Michigan: Zondervan(1967). The first part of this 3-part package is 2 sheets of 3-ring binder type lined paper found in the back of the below Sloan book contains 42 signatures of coaches and football players from the 1968 Shriner East West Football game. I've done nothing with the sheets as far as framing; they are currently just protected in an acid-free plastic bag. The sheets are in very good condition, with some aging and 'limpness' to the paper, one tear through one of the 3-ring binder holes, and non-instrusive to the signatures fold lines (one each horizontal and vertical), from where they had been folded and placed in Mr. Sloan's book. My football-fanatic brother and various football fan friends (some of whom I owe a great deal to as they're very familiar with many of the signatures on these sheets and could also give me some background on the players and coaches) have identified all but one of these signatures (a prize to any of you who can identify the one unknown!). They are, for the Western team: (Eugene) Mercury Morris, Al Brenner, Jim Seizemore, Charles H. Rosenfelder, Gene Huey, Roger Wehrli, Bill Earthquake Enyart, Edd Hargett, Terry Brown, Paul Gipson, Jon Kolb, Bill Bradley, John Zook, Jim Anderson, Mike Montler, Al Worley, James Mitchell, Pepper Rodgers, Keith Christensen, Jack O'Malley, Mike Schwier, Joe Paterno (coach, then at Penn State), Malcolm Soveron, Bobby Douglass, Jon Sandstrom and Jerry LeVias. For The Eastern team, they are: C. Rip Engle, Coach Paul Dietzel (then at So. Carolina), Ben Johnson, John Shiners, Charlie Jarvis, Dave Bradley, Bobby Campbell, Vince Dooley (coach, then at Georgia), Coach Jim Root (then at NH), Marti Stewart, Pay Dyer, Dave Foley, Gene Ferguson, Mike Hall, and Jack Rudnay. Plus the unknown is on one of the Eastern sheets: Julian (could I suppose be John, though it has that dotted 'i') Nurcenalson (or Rurcenalson, or something similar; I was unable to find such a name in the 1968 College Football Magazine that is another part of this package). Of course huge scans on request, so you can see the signatures. The second part of this package is an excellent condition Street and Smith's Official Yearbook College Football 1968 magazine (lots about O. J. Simpson in it). The magazine is bright and crisp without any handwriting in it. The spine is uncreased, but very slightly slanted forward. There is one short closed tear upper back binding, the upper back binding corner tip has a small fold crease, and there's just a bit of browning to the white background along the upper and spine edges. Tons of information about that year's college teams and coaches, and the players who have signed the above sheets. The last part of this package consists of a 1st edition/1st printing book by Steve Sloan titled Calling Life's Signals published by Zondervan Publishing House in 1967, containing an Introduction by Paul W. (Bear) Bryant. The book is signed and inscribed "To Marc, Best Regards, Steve Sloan (Phil.1:21)" on the front end page (I believe this may be inscribed to Marc Lyons, another football player). The book is straight, clean and tight with no other handwriting in it, with slight edgewear from shelving. The price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp and bright with some fading to the spine and some small edge chips and tears. Steve Sloan is himself a continuing part of college football history (as are several others who signed the sheets). Mr. Sloan was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Steve Sloan's biography, from an internet page about him: In both 1960 and 1961, Steve Sloan was selected to the All-State football and basketball teams. In 1961, he signed with the University of Alabama, where he enjoyed an outstanding career earning All-American honors in 1965 and guided his team to a national title. That same year, he earned Southeastern Conference MVP honors and was an Academic All-American. His first head coaching position was with Vanderbilt University (1973-74), earning him SEC Coach of the Year honors his second year. He then became head coach of Texas Tech University (1974-77), and was named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1976. He later had head coaching stints at the University of Mississippi and Duke University. Sloan served as athletic director at the University of Alabama from 1987-89, and served in that capacity at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and finally at UT-Chattanoo ga before retiring from football in 2006. A fine package of late 1960s football history and a unique grouping of football player and coach signatures.; Signed by Author, 10, 14, 49, 52, 61, NF/VG

THE EIGHTH DAY INSCRIBED TO AARON COPLAND

New York: Harper & Row((1967)). First Edition, Copy #5 of 500 numbered and SIGNED copies of this National Book Award winner. In addition to being signed on the limitation page, the author has INSCRIBED this copy on both the title page and the blank page facing it to composer Aaron Copland: "Presented to Aaron Copland on/the occasion of the tribute paid/to him on his 70th birthday by/the friends of the MacDowell/Colony/T.N.W." On the title page: "For Aaron/from/Thornton/with a long admiration and/indebtedness and affection./October 1970." Wilder has drawn a red box around "Aaron" and a blue box around "Thornton" with colored pencils. Copland, one of America's greatest composers and celebrators of the American spirit, had much in common with Wilder regarding themes and subjects. Copland composed the music for the 1940 film adaptation of OUR TOWN, for which he was nominated for two Academy Awards. The film itself was nominated for six Oscars, including Best Picture, but did not win any. After first meeting with Copland to discuss the project, Wilder said of him, "He's a very likeable fella." Wilder wrote most of OUR TOWN at the MacDowell Colony where Copland also wrote much of his masterwork, APPALACHIAN SPRING. An Association Copy of the first magnitude., Hardcover, Mild sunning to the spine. Still Fine in glassine and slipcase, as issued

BEHIND THE WHEEL [C MAGAZINE ISSUE 14] [final draft and mock-up, signed]

[New York: Cambridge University Press, 1967]. First Edition. Softcover. Near fine. 11 inches. 26 leaves, numbered 0-25. Leaves 1-25 printed (Multilith) recto only. In contemporary brown pressboard binder, front cover titled in manuscript. Recto of leaf 0 in manuscript (in two hands), verso in typescript (smaller sheet pasted to leaf). Notes and corrections throughout in Brownstein's and Padgett's hands. Signed once by Brownstein, twice by Padgett. Near fine. The final draft and mock-up of Michael Brownstein's first book, BEHIND THE WHEEL, which was published in 1967 as both "another C poetry booklet" and issue number fourteen of C MAGAZINE. The draft includes a number of changes and corrections in Brownstein's hand, all of which appear to have been maintained in the published version: phrases are reversed in the last line of "Sunny Barn, Special Guests"; in "News," "A nymphomaniac" becomes "A fine Chinese"; a full first stanza is removed from "Against the Grain"; etc. The title page, which includes information for the colophon, is inscribed and signed by Ron Padgett, who is credited with "production" of the book in the colophon; Padgett makes a few notes elsewhere and also signs the last page. Michael Brownstein (born 1943) is associated with Beat poetry and the second generation of the New York School - in the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF THE NEW YORK SCHOOL POETS, Terence Diggory describes Brownstein as 'convey[ing] Beat vision with New York School speed." After moving to New York in 1965, Brownstein quickly became involved with the Lower East Side poetry scene, becoming a founding participant of the Poetry Project at St. Mark's Church in-the-Bowery in 1966.

        The Hairy Who Sideshow

Unpag. (32 pp.) offset lithographed comic book-style artists' book, published in conjunction with an exhibition by the Hairy Who artist group, containing brightly colored drawings and cartoons. Profusely illustrated. Some pages loose, minor scattered pencil notations. 4to. Staple-bound illustrated wrpps., some minor soiling to cover. N.p. (Chicago/Hyde Park Art Center) n.d. (1967). The Hairy Who was one of three groups making up part of the Chicago Imagists art movement, a group of artists associated with the School of the Art Institute of Chicago who exhibited at the Hyde Park Art Center in the late 1960s. They were known for their grotesque and surrealist art and their complete uninvolvement with contemporary art trends taking place in New York City. Six artists in particular made up the Hairy Who: Jim Nutt, Gladys Nilsson, James Falconer, Art Green, Suellen Rocca, and Karl Wirsum. They held three exhibitions from 1966 to 1968, esoterically naming the shows "Hairy Who?", after a member of the group was heard asking "Harry who?" about the artist and art critic Harry Bouras. Through visual puns and an incredible use of color, they crafted new ways of thinking about figurative art. The publications they created for their exhibitions were formatted like comic books and are among the first full-color self-published artists' books.

        ANDY WARHOL'S INDEX (BOOK)

New York: Random House, 1967. 4to. 11" x 8.25". pp. [68] plus pictorial endpapers. Cloth-backed boards with holographic cover. A solid example of this notoriously fragile production. Boards are bright and sharp, with only trace rubbing; pages clean; Main faults are typical: balloon perished with attendant offsetting and adhesion of surrounding pages, as in all copies; one signature starting, but still intact; lacking uncommon original plastic sleeve. Else all remaining elements present and functional. All pop-ups work, including the accordion (which retains its squeak!). Interview disk detached, but laid in. Dodecahedron unfolded with string still attached , but lacking original rubber band. "Chelsea Girls" disk still attached to original spring. Retaining six of the eight tabs on the "Big Surprise" page. A much nicer copy than typically encountered. Warhol's famed "pop-up book for hipsters" and one of the best documents to emerge from The Factory. A Roth 101 selection. "[O]ne of the most important and exuberant Pop art objects ever published [...] it is also one of the ultimate photobooks-as-objects" (Parr & Badger 144-5). Additional images available upon request.
