Finian's Rainbow (Original screenplay for the 1947 film)

Burbank: Warner Brothers / Seven Arts, 1967. Final Script for the 1968 film, based on the 1947 musical by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy (and written for the screen by them). Working copy, with occasional holograph markings throughout the text in pencil and colored pencil, though the original use of the script is not known. & & Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947, but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands, holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct, with his realistic, New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material, and the results were decidedly mixed, despite a widely-loved performance by Clark. & & The original Broadway production opened at the 46th Street Theater on January 10, 1947, ran for 725 performances and won the 1947 Tony Awards for the Best Actor (David Wayne) as well as Music Direction and Choreography. The film was nominated for Best Sound and Best Score. & & Yellow studio wrappers, stamped FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 59 and dated June 21, 1967. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters-playwrights Harburg and Saidy and composer Burton Lane. 130 leaves, mimeograph, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 3/10/67 and 9/15/67. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with yapping and closed tears, bound with two gold brads.

This faithful facsimile contains all the original maps, plans and in-text drawings, and many of the maps are reproduced in colour. Blaeu's atlas was a monumental production and was intended to be part of a larger work containing maps of ocean and the heavens. A beautiful facsimile in a simulated period binding..

Signet.       Garden City: Doubleday & Company, Inc., 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. The dustwrapper is complete including the price with some abrasion to the spine and wrinkling and rubbing to the rear. Very Good or better in a near Very Good dustwrapper. INSCRIBED and SIGNED with a felt-tip pen on the half-title page by the author "For ----/With thanks and best wishes/Robert Kennedy." Books authentically signed by Robert Kennedy are uncommon, and this one is rather special as it was signed shortly before he was assassinated. Laid into the book are three interesting pieces of ephemera. One is a small printed invitation from the Colorado United Democrats for Humphrey to a "Coffee with the Vice President" for May 10. On the verso the inscribee of the Kennedy book has written a note stating that the signed book from Kennedy was received in the mail on 10 June 1968 as a gift for his work on the Kennedy-McCarthy coalition in Denver "where we shut out Hubert Humphrey." Also laid in is the top portion of the brown envelope that contained the book from the Kennedy for President Headquarters postmarked 2 June 1968. Kennedy was assassinated on 5 June 1968. Finally, there is a memorial card for RFK with a portrait of him on the recto and a long quote from RFK's extemporaneous remarks on the death of Martin Luther King.

      c. 1967. Sheet size: 163 × 191 mm. Pen and ink on wove paper. Stamped for publication in the Sunday Telegraph. Three men in front of a Moorish window: a middle-aged man in long hair and hippy clothes holding the back of a chair; a younger unsmiling man with cropped hair, sunglasses, medallion and cigar; a moustachioed man at their feet in a yoga posture. The cartoons and illustrations of Nicolas Bentley (1907-1978) were part of the warp and weft of English popular culture in the 1950s and 60s. Never savage, though often waspishly accurate and exuding an urbane air of amusement at the foibles of his fellows, Bentley's work was familiar to the public from a wide variety of publications. Between 1952 and 1954 he drew regular cartoons for the weekly Time and Tide, and after that for the daily News Chronicle. Between 1958 and 1962 he drew topical cartoons for the Daily Mail under the title "Watch My Line." He also drew many portraits, in black and white line, of famous people, for various papers, including over sixty for the Sunday Telegraph, which began publication in February 1961.
