BASS, SAUL, Designer) TWO OF US, THE [LE VIEIL HOMME ET L'ENFANT] (1967 or later) SILKSCREEN POSTER

Art Krebs Studio 1967 - Vintage original 26 x 35 ½" (66 x 90 cm.) silkscreen poster, USA. Our friend, poster collector and dealer Daniel Strebin, provided this information: About a decade ago, he received consignments of Saul Bass silkscreens from the Bass estate. He personally saw invoices for some of them which were printed around 1965. Most of the silkscreens were produced at Art Krebs Studio in Los Angeles. Bass continued to have silkscreens created up until around 1980. All of the silkscreen editions appear to have been in editions of between 50-150. It also seems that once an edition was exhausted, Bass did not make a second edition; as s a result, all of these art silkscreens are very rare indeed. Bass never intended for these posters to be sold -- they were intended to be given away. Since he was frequently frustrated with the compromises the film studios inflicted on his magnificent modernist designs, the silkscreens were intended to represent his imagery in its purest possible form. This was for the U.S. release of a French film by Claude Berri, about a young Jewish boy who goes to live with a Catholic couple in France during World War II. The husband (Michel Simon), who does not know his young charge is Jewish, is in fact a virulent anti-Semite, but comes to love the young man and outgrow his prejudices. The original U.S. theatrical one sheet poster has a similar design, but it is only printed in black, with an obtrusive slogan at the top -- making this silkscreen infinitely more effective. Unfolded, VERY GOOD.

[Original Concert/Event Poster]

np [1967], Boston - 11 3/8" x 8.5" offset poster, black ink on brown paper. Hand-lettered in a psychedelic style designed by "T. [F?] Murphy." PROVENANCE: From the estate of Velvet Underground guitarist Sterling Morrison, with Morrison's widow Martha's signed letter of provenance included. Originally glued to another piece of paper, the poster has been professionally restored and is now backed with archival rice paper. Fine. Rare poster to what has become an historic event. The Velvet Underground played The Boston Tea Party (the Beantown equivalent of Max's Kansas City) numerous times throughout their career. And their performances over the weekend of August 11th-12th might have been just another appearance had Andy Warhol not been present to film the band. The footage he shot is one of only two performance films of The Underground with synched sound, and more importantly, is the only footage of the band in color extant. Capturing The Velvets just before the WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT sessions, Warhol's footage features the Exploding Plastic Inevitable, and utilizes numerous experimental techniques – in- camera edits, sudden zooms, single-frame stills, sweeping panoramas – meant to mimic the experience of seeing live The Velvets and their troupe. Warhol's film was long believed lost. As Steve Nelson remembered: "There's this mythical film that was shot at the Tea Party in August 1967 [.] That weekend [was] the first time they incorporated the Andy Warhol side of The Velvet Underground into the Tea Party presentation. Andy actually came there [.] and Paul Morrissey was there, and supposedly they filmed [.] I know they were there; I know they were pointing cameras. Was there any film in the cameras, or did it just disappear? I really don't know. The film just never seems to have shown up" (quoted in WHITE LIGHT/WHITE HEAT 158). The film was unearthed, remastered, and restored in 2009-2010, and toured museums and art houses around the country from late 2010 through early 2011 as THE VELVET UNDERGROUND IN BOSTON (1967, 16mm, 33 mins. Dir: Andy Warhol). C/O THE VELVET UNDERGROUND (53) and NEW YORK ART (202) reproduce the original art for this poster (but not the poster itself), the latter noting (it now seems erroneously) that the shows "never took place." Not in DeRogatis. A rare artifact to an important Warhol film and document of The Velvet Underground in their prime. Warhol's film work continues to be recognized as being as groundbreaking as anything he did on canvas, and The Velvets remain probably the most influential band of the last fifty years. As Lester Bangs has written: "Modern music begins with the Velvets and the implications [.] of what they did seem to go on forever." With extraordinary provenance from the estate of VU member Sterling Morrison, knee-weakeningly cool. [Attributes: First Edition]

Original Heavily Revised Autograph Manuscript of:] "HIGH WIRE TO THE CRATER" [caption title].

[Np] [nd but ca. 1967]. - Seven leaves of ruled 8 x 13" paper. Horizontal fold, paperclip rust mark at top edge, otherwise very good. An extensively revised working manuscript, in blue, red and black ink, of this review of Lowry's SELECTED LETTERS and UNDER THE VOLCANO, both published by Cape, the former the first UK edition, the latter the first UK edition to include Spender's Introduction. Redgrave had been at Cambridge at the same time as Lowry, and co-edited CAMBRIDGE POETRY 1930, which included Lowry's first appearance in book form. The actor incorporates in his review a substantial personal component, as well as the critical stance of a reviewer: "I remember him chiefly for his presence, as distinct from his personality. He was bright- eyed, sharp-nosed, burly and probably a bit muscle-bound . but, with all his strength, extremely gentle ." The review saw publication in the SUNDAY TIMES.

        The Master and Margarita

London: Collins and Harvill Press,, 1967. Translated from the Russian by Michael Glenny. Octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the pictorial dust jacket. Spine very gently cocked, spine ends lightly bumped, very mild foxing to top edge. An excellent copy in a bright jacket with slightly faded spine, a few nicks to head of spine, and a small closed tear to rear panel. First edition, first impression of the English translation by Glenny. This translation was preceded earlier in 1967 by Mirra Ginsburg's translation, as published by Grove, New York. However, Ginsburg's copy text was the bowdlerised Soviet version, in which huge portions had been excised. The Glenny translation used a complete copy text and is generally considered the standard English translation of one of the 20th century's literary masterworks.

"Irish Megalith," Original photograph by Paul Caponigro, with test print

. Very Good. 1967 Original photograph, 9.5 x 13.5 inches, mounted on matboard trimmed to size. Signed, titled, and dated on the verso by Caponigro. In very good condition with slightest bumping to the corners and two small tape remainders on the verso. Very slight curve, easily flattened in a frame. Also included is a test print, 4.5 x 7 inches. The test print is labeled "Wedge Shape Gallery Grace, Balleyedmonduff Co., Dublin, Nov. '66". Letter of provenance indicates that these prints were acquired by Robert Natkin in a trade with his close friend and fellow artist, Paul Caponigro. An excellent example of Caponigro's work. Paul Caponigro is considered one of our century's foremost landscape photographers. Having studied with Minor White, Caponigro's technical genius is apparent in each image and is proof of his printing philosophy: "Technique must serve and not dominate a craft which requires creative movement." His hope is that his viewers will allow the prints to speak for themselves. "One might become aware of suggestions whispered by the interaction of tonalities within each print. It is a silent realm worth exploring."

Juxtaposing the urbane and the macabre, combining portraiture and street scenes with abstract photographic fragments, the book uses metaphor and visual pun in an unrelenting stream of consciousness. In its sequence and design it is a book which pre-figures much of contemporary photographic publishing and art practice.\" Containing 96 black-and white photographs and measuring approximately 10 x 8 inches, the book is bound in black cloth covered boards stamped in silver with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The condition of the book is FINE. The dust jacket is in Fine- condition with minor wear to the top edge and a shallow crease to the front. There are the remnants of a very small sticker on the back cover. Overall, this is an exceptional copy of one of the most important photobooks ever published that is rarely found in such wonderful condition. Cited in both The Open Book by Andrew Roth and The Photobook: A History by Parr and Badger.

        The New Industrial State.

Boston, Houghton Mifflin Company 1967 - First edition. Octavo, original brown cloth with titles to spine in black and silver. Fine in a near fine dust jacket that shows only the lightest of wear. Signed by the author. A very sharp copy of this economic highspot. Galbraith's ideas often addressed the influence of the potential market power of large corporations (Dunn and Pressman, 2005). He believed that corporations could become price makers, rather than price takers, by weakening the accepted principle of consumer sovereignty (Galbraith, 1970). This, in turn, allowed corporations to efficiently increase the production of their goods if they could achieve the strongest market power. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        With Revolvers Aimed…Finger Bowls

San Francisco, CA: Beach Books, Texts & Documents, 1967. First Edition. Softcover. Near Fine. This is one of the rarest, most significant items among all our offerings, with no less than four inter-related associations. Published in 1967 by Mary Beach’s imprint & translated from the French by her, it is the poetry & prose-poetry of Claude Pelieu, her husband. Beach (1919-2006) &Pelieu (1934-2002) were a legendary artistic & literary couple, who met in 1962 & were creatively associated with William S. Burroughs, Allen Ginsberg, Lawrence Ferlinghetti (whose City Lights Books was the distributor of this item), Charles & Pamela Plymell, & many others over a half-century career in Paris, New York & San Francisco. This First Edition copy is signed with a lengthy citation in French & dated 1970 on the title page by Claude Pelieu to Allen DeLoach, the previous owner of this copy who was at the forefront of the literary ferment on the Lower East Side of NYC during the 1960s. Deloach was the publisher of the literary journal Intrepid& is an important poet in his own right. This work is officially “Presented by William S. Burroughs.” & WSB has signed this copy next to his name, also on the title page. Pelieu’s text is preceded by “Two Counterscripts” of cut-up writing by WSB. Finally, Mary Beach has signed below her name with a whimsical citation (“The Buffalo Banana Splits”) on the title page. The provenance & associations here are incredibly rich—all four of these great figures knew & worked with each other, & all leave their imprint, directly or by reference, on this one item. In near-fine condition with only minor wear to front & back covers & blank spine & edges, interior very tight & crisp. Signed with French Citation by Claude Pelieu to Allen DeLoach, signed by William S. Burroughs, & signed with citation by Mary Beach.
