        LOGAN'S RUN

New York: The Dial Press, 1967. New York: The Dial Press,. 1967. boards.. A fine copy in very good dust jacket with restoration of spine ends.. Still, a somewhat better example of the jacket than is usually found.. (#149436). First edition. An American future technological dystopia run by a computer system known as The Thinker where all men and women are killed at age 21. Accompanied by an AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED (ALS). 2 pages, dated 20 May 1978, from Nolan to "Dear Kirby" [McCauley], signed "Bill," on plain letter-size paper. Asks about a possible assignment for TWILIGHT ZONE MAGAZINE and mentions he will be going (with Ray Bradbury) to a party sponsored by the magazine at the Griffith Observatory. Complains that he is behind schedule with his outline of LOGAN'S WORLD. Adds up what he has in the bank and what's due to come in ("-with 4 [thousand dollars] more to add if I sell the Porsche in the next week or so."). Estimates that he has been averaging $8,000 a month from his writing over the past 18 months. Contrasts his situation with that of his fellow Los Angeles writer Dennis Etchison, "who had 25 cents total when I talked to him last, and who was helping with a student's term paper, for $10.00 eating money! He's going 'nuts' he says, waiting for his novel to sell.") An emotionally charged letter, conveying a good sense of life in the fast lane in LA (and life in the breakdown lane). Nolan, writer and editor, active in popular fiction genres since the 1950s, is perhaps best known for LOGAN'S RUN and its sequels and adaptations (for the big screen and TV). Kirby McCauley was probably the most important literary agent of horror, fantasy and sf writers in the boom years of the 1970s and 1980s. Small damp stain smearing of several words, else fine. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-812. Sargent, British and American Utopian Literature, 1516-1985, p. 305.

Cien Años de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude); [with:] Cronica de una muerte anunciada (Chronicle of a Death Foretold)

Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamericana, 1967/Bogota-Colombia: Editorial La Oveja Negra, 1981. Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamericana, 1967/Bogota-Colombia: Editorial La Oveja Negra,, 1981. 2 works together, octavo. Cien años: perfect bound octavo; white card wrappers as issued, pictorial decoration to front wrapper in black, orange, and blue, titles to spine and text to rear wrapper in black. Extremities rubbed, spine creased and rolled, wear and some small marks to rear wrapper, leaves tanned at margins but otherwise clean; a very good copy. Cronica: original navy boards, titles to spine in white. With the dust jacket. Ends and corners nicked, mild toning to margins of leaves, but an excellent copy in the somewhat chipped jacket. Both copies warmly and wittily inscribed by Marquez in 1981, evidently to an old girlfriend and her husband, the first on the first blank "Para Silvia, de mi corazón cuando me quería a mí y no a ese hombre; con toda mi alma de antes, GABM 1981" ("To Silvia, from the bottom of my heart, when she used to love me and not that man; with all my erstwhile love, GABM 1981"), and the second on the dedication page, "Para Silvia y Rodolfo, este libro que los persigue desde hace mucho tiempo por todos los aeropuertos del mundo; con un abrazo grande, GABM.Z 81" ("To Silvia and Rodolfo, this book that has been chasing you for a long time through all the world's airports, with a big hug, GABM.Z 81"). Cien años de soledad is the true first edition in the correctly illustrated wrappers (with the ship and three yellow flowers, changed in later printings at Marquez's insistence). Cronica de una muerte anunciada is the Colombian first edition, first published simultaneously in Colombia, Mexico, and Spain (on the "follow the flag" principle, the Colombian is the most desirable).

Cien años de soledad [One Hundred Years of Solitude]

Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamerica. Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamerica. 1st Edition. Soft cover. Very Good. RARE FIRST EDITION, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY GABRIEL GARCIA MARQUEZ: "Y ---, con me abrazos del amigo, [signed] Gabo Garcia Marquez / 07". One Hundred Years of Solitude is "that cultural phenomenon the like of which we see seldom in our times. Here is a great and complex book that, within its covers, includes every possible aspect of human life and, in its art and structure, demonstrates a sophistication and mastery the equal of Melville, Joyce, Proust, Faulkner, or Nabokov at their best. At the same time the book enjoys continued high sales in Colombia, in Latin America, and throughout much of the world. For such a confluence of high art and popular success one needs to go back to the nineteenth century, when entire French families would anxiously await the next installment from Balzac or Hugo, and Yankee audiences would pack the halls in order to see and hear Dickens in the flesh. "It would be impossible to overestimate the impact that Garcia Marquez's chronicle has had on the larger reading public. Some statistics and anecdotes should suffice to convey the extent of its influence. When the Argentine publisher Editorial Sudamericana issued the first edition of Cien años de soledad in 1967, initial projections were of gradual sales of ten thousand copies and an annual trickle thereafter. As it happened, the first printing of eight thousand copies sold out in a week, all of them at subway station newsstands in Buenos Aires. Soon the novel was taking the continent by storm, and to this day the pace has not abated, the number of copies sold in the Hispanic world long ago having surpassed the ten million mark" (Bell-Villada, Garcia Marquez: The Man and His Work). Garcia Marquez signed and inscribed this copy while he was in Havana in 2007 for la Fundacion del Nuevo cine Latinoamericano. Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamerica, 1967. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers; custom box. Some creasing to spine and rear panel; usual light text toning. An outstanding signed copy of a notoriously rare and fragile book. RARE.

[ARCHIVE] The Merriweather Post Pavilion of Music February, 1965 to July, 1967 [Columbia Maryland]

The Rouse Company, 1967. [ Baltimore, MD ]: The Rouse Company, 1967. First Edition. Cloth. Very Good. First Edition. 8 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches. Green buckram cloth, covers bowed outward. Various documents, forms bound in. Over 350 items total. Spine marked "Columbia Institutional Development | Pavilion of Music" Cloth. The day file of Wallace Hamilton, Director of Institutional Planning for the Rouse Company, containing over 350 pages of documents and correspondence related to the conception, creation and eventual opening of the Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Maryland. The Rouse Company/Community Research and Development, Inc. was responsible for building a planned model community of 100,000 people in Columbia Maryland, of which this Pavilion of Music would occupy roughly 10 acres and provide the summer home of the National Symphony Orchestra when completed in 1967. The Music Pavilion was planned to be opened with the first set of buildings in the community. The set of documents taken as a whole are quite interesting because although they document the usual correspondence between major players in the project, there are also side notes that provide an "inside view" to what was happening. For instance, shortly after the announcement that the National Symphony would be playing there in the summers, a "Battle of the Symphonies" occured when the Baltimore Symphony (Rouse's home town symphony) started a real fight. Page 43 is a typed note from Hamilton noting the "inside story" behind it. The documents trace the initial conception of the idea, through the negotiations at length with the National Symphony, to starting to work on nuts and bolts related to Unions, concessions, contracts, and details. There is also considerable documentation of the "Wolf Trap Farm episode" which deals with a donation of 100 acres from Mrs. Jouett Shouse to the National Capital Parks with a stated intention that a 3500 seat outdoor concert hall, very similar to Merriweather, be built on the land. At the end of the "insider summary" Hamilton notes "In hindsight, it does seem that we should never have touched this issue with a ten foot pole. But at the time it seemed very urgent." While the archive of material doesn't contain blueprints or construction details, the financial and operational aspects of this scale project are evident both from a political and practical standpoint. Many of the memorandum are internal Rouse Company memorandum, and many of those have hand-written notes on them. It is interesting to note that the Pavillion was designed by Gehry, Walsh and O'Malley of Baltimore. The facility is still in operation today, and was recently ranked #4 in open air pavillions by Rolling Stone (Wikipedia). It's opening day was July 14, 1967. A fascinating read.

CIEN AÑOS DE SOLEDAD (ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE)

Editorial Sudamericana, Buenos Aires 1967 - First Printing. Octavo; illustrated wrappers; 351pp, [1]. Tiny stress crease to one corner, with a few barely perceptible spots to rear wrapper, else a fresh, Fine copy, giving every evidence of being unread. Housed in a custom half-morocco clamshell box designed by James Tapley. The Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece, a highspot of Latin American literature, and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The book had a first printing of 8,000 copies, which first appeared in Buenos Aires bookstores on June 6th, 1967; it took exactly two weeks for them to be sold out. Three more printings were done in 1967 (June, September, and December), each of them approximately 20,000 copies. The first printing is the only state of the book with the cover art featuring the ship and three yellow flowers, a design García Márquez reportedly hated; an alternate design created by a friend graced the cover of later printings. The present edition was published three years prior to the American edition, and quite rare in comparison. With only a few exceptions, nearly every copy of this title we have seen outside the continent has been flawed in some way; the present example is stunning - the very best of the few we have handled.         ARABESQUES

Grafica moderna-contemporanea 1967 - Tiratura: 22/80.

THE DOORS". An Authentic, First Presentation, First-State RIAA White Matte – Gold Record Award.

New York: Elektra Records 1967 - The original RIAA White Matte Gold Record Award, presented to The Doors in recognition of their debut album reaching $1,000,000.00 in retail sales. This is the exact award that hung in The Doors’ Hollywood offices at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd, Los Angeles. Mounted on hand cut Bainbridge white matte and in the orginal Fulton Street New York Frame & Picture Co. wooden frame as issued. The glass is original and has been professionally cleaned to the underside resulting in replacement brown paper to the rear of the frame. The condition is very good indeed, there is a little tarnishing to the gilt on the record at the extremities, and the frame is a little scratched and bumped as you might expect. Released in January 1967, The Doors debut album was certified gold by the RIAA on September 11, 1967. An exceptional rock and roll artifact. The Doors’ first gold record, for their first album, from the personal collection of their longtime manager. Provenance: From the personal collection of long time Doors manager Bill Siddons. With his signed statement "I, Bill Siddons, was the manager of the Doors from January 1968 though October 1972. The gold record award for "The Doors", was owned by me and hung at the Doors’ office at 8512 Santa Monica Blvd., Los Angeles, 90069, for the duration of our leasing that space."Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Souvenir handwritten lyrics to the hit song, signed by each member of the band. [with] Color photograph signed by each member at time of lyric sheet.Off-white card stock, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, undated (but June 1967 - early 1969), with the first verse to the song written in holograph by drummer Joe Butler in blue felt tip pen. Holograph signatures below of John Sebastian (harmonica, autoharp, etc.), Jerry Yester (guitar), Steve Boone (bass), and Joe Butler (drums). With lovin' heart-in-spoon doodle by Butler below the lyrics:"Do you believe in magicin a young girl's heartHow the music can free herWhenever it startsAnd it's magicIf the music is groovyIf it makes you feel happyLike an old-time movie..."Included is an 8 x 10 inch color photograph, taken c. June 1967-early 1969, holograph signed in blue felt tip pen by each member as above and likely at the same time as lyric sheet. Both lyric sheet and photograph matted and framed. On July 20, 1965, Kama Sutra Records released the Lovin' Spoonful's first hit, Do You Believe In Magic, with music and lyrics by the band's leader, John Sebastian. It reached #9 on Billboard's Hot 100. The band followed-up with a series of hit singles and albums throughout 1965 and 1966. The Lovin' Spoonful became known for such folk-flavored hits as You Didn't Have to Be So Nice, which reached #10, and Daydream, which went to #2. Other hits included Did You Ever Have to Make Up Your Mind? (another #2 hit), and their only song to reach No. 1 on the Hot 100, Summer in the City (August 1966). Later that year, the #10 hit Rain on the Roof and the #8 hit Nashville Cats completed the group's first seven consecutive Hot 100 hits to reach that chart's top 10. The only other 1960s act to achieve that feat was Gary Lewis & The Playboys. In May 1967, original guitarist Zal Yanovsky was compelled to leave the group because of a marijuana bust. A citizen of Canada, he was deported. Jerry Yester, a folkie who had been a member of The New Christie Minstrels and the Modern Folk Quartet, joined the group. In early 1969, with its commercial success waning, John Sebastian dissolved the band. The original four members of the Lovin' Spoonful were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame on March 6, 2000.
