No Way to Treat a Lady (Original screenplay for the 1964 film)

Paramount, Los Angeles 1967 - Final Script for the 1968 film, "No Way to Treat a Lady," based on the 1964 novel by William Goldman, written for the screen by John Gay, and starring Rod Steiger, Lee Remick, and George Segal. One of the best unsung crime films of the 1960s, wherein Rod Steiger was given an opportunity for a field day as a serial killer who is a master of disguise; one of the few later roles he didn't overplay, and one of Segal's best performances as well. One of many fine adaptations of novels by William Goldman (Marathon Man, The Princess Bride), who was also a very successful screenwriter. Dark blue studio wrappers, stamped "FINAL SHOOTING SCRIPT" on the front wrapper, and dated June 13, 1967 on both the front wrapper and title page. Credits on the front wrapper and title page for screenwriter Gay and producer Sol C. Siegel. 144 leaves, all eye-rest green, mimeograph, rectos only.         The World Jones Made

NY: Ace Books, 1967. First printing of Ace Books F-429 mass market paperback edition which was the first separate book publication after Ace Double D-150 (1956). 192pp. Pictorial paper covers. 40c cover price. Signed by Dick to title page. Book is in As New, unread condition [only opened for signature]. Miniscule production rub to spine base right corner. " [In] The World Jones Made' Philip K. Dick examin[es] notions of precognition, humanity, and politics. The World Jones Made is set in 2002 AD. On a then-future post-apocalyptic Earth, there was a devastating conflict that involved the use of nuclear weapons. Many United States cities were targeted, and the Peoples Republic of China (and Soviet Union) also collapsed, leading to the imposition of a Federal World Government (Fedgov). In this dystopia, Relativism emerged as the governing political orthodoxy. Relativism is said to be a moral and ethical philosophy that states everyone is free to believe what they wish, as long as they don't make anyone else try to follow that principle, which has become established law after the destructiveness of the war unleashed by ideologies. (However, dissidents from that orthodoxy do end up in forced labor camps). This sacrosanct principle is challenged by a man named Floyd Jones, whose assertions about the future prove correct. Relativism enables legal consumption of drugs like heroin and marijuana, as well as watching live sex shows with hermaphrodite human mutants. Due to the mutagenic effects of radiation from wartime nuclear exchanges, mutants earn their living within the entertainment industry, although one group has been subjected to deliberate genetic engineering, which later enables them to settle an (inhabitable) Venus. Doug Cussick is an agent of Fedgov, and his involvement with Jones encompasses this book. Jones has precognitive abilities that let him see a year into the future, which allows Dick to explore questions of predestination, free will and determinism. Fedgov (and Jones) encounter an apparently unintelligent alien lifeforms named Drifters, which turn out to be one gamete of a spore-based migratory alien life form, and whose xenophobic destruction leads to alien quarantine of the Solar System. Jones foresees his own birth (and death) one year before they actually happen, but makes no attempt to stop the latter event. However, he and his followers create a cult that overthrows Fedgov, leading to the resettlement of Doug, his wife Nina and their three year-old son on Venus, in an artificial habitat. The novel addresses questions of Jones' agenda and trustworthiness, as well as the ambiguous benefits of individual precognition." - wikipedia.. Signed by Author. First Edition. Paperback. Fine. Illus. by Cover Art By Kelly Freas. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall.

The Eighth Day [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper. (1967). The three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning (Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Bridge of San Luis Rey) author's National Book Award winning novel. Inscribed by the author: "For JEAN and WALTER with deep regard and affection ever/ Thornton/ March 21, 1967." The names are printed large, with "Jean" in a different pen, whilst the rest of the inscription is in small cursive. We are unaware of the point of this. We do know, from another inscription, that Wilder was in New York on this date, and that he had reason to behold the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Walter Kerr and his wife, the writer Jean Kerr (of Please Don't Eat the Daisies fame) with deep regard and affection: Walter Kerr lauded Wilder's work repeatedly in the 1960s, from his off-Broadway work ("the very special voice of Thornton Wilder...the homely, jaunty, gently poetic sound of it..."), to the cultural phenomenon that was Hello, Dolly!, which was based on Wilder's The Matchmaker. This is conjecture on our part, but suffice it to say we could not come up with another New York Jean and Walter that would fit the bill here. Regardless, an undeniably gorgeous, inscribed copy of a National Book Award winner: fine in a fine dust jacket -- so much so that we first wondered if this copy was a facsimile (it's not). First Edition. Hardcover.
