Milano, Edizioni il Polifilo, 1967 - 4°, LXVIII, 289 S., Taf. 186 Taf.; 290-616 S., Taf. 187-331, OLwd., Exlibris Name u. bibliothekssignatur a. Vors., tadell. 3000 gr.         A Hall of Mirrors

Boston: Houghton Mifflin. 1967. His first book, a novel of drifters in New Orleans in the early Sixties caught up in the web of a quasi-religious political machine. Winner of the William Faulkner Award for best first novel of the year as well as a Houghton Mifflin Literary Fellowship Award. Basis for the film WUSA (the call letters of the right-wing radio station that figures prominently in the book), starring Paul Newman, Joanne Woodward and Anthony Perkins. Inscribed by the author: "For ___ & ___/ All of these things have I seen and some of them I was/ Love/ Bob Stone." One of the recipients was a Wallace Stegner Fellow at Stanford at the same time Stone was there, where he was writing this novel, which at that time was titled "Children of Light," the name of the Robert Lowell poem that serves as epigraph for the book and contains the phrase that eventually became the published book's title. By all appearances a contemporary inscription, and one to a close friend/colleague; we have seen few copies of this title with such a revealing and personal inscription. Very good in a good dust jacket with a long tear to the lower front flap fold, previously internally tape-mended. First Edition. Hardcover.

The Eighth Day [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper. (1967). The three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning (Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Bridge of San Luis Rey) author's National Book Award winning novel. Inscribed by the author: "For JEAN and WALTER with deep regard and affection ever/ Thornton/ March 21, 1967." The names are printed large, with "Jean" in a different pen, whilst the rest of the inscription is in small cursive. We are unaware of the point of this. We do know, from another inscription, that Wilder was in New York on this date, and that he had reason to behold the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Walter Kerr and his wife, the writer Jean Kerr (of Please Don't Eat the Daisies fame) with deep regard and affection: Walter Kerr lauded Wilder's work repeatedly in the 1960s, from his off-Broadway work ("the very special voice of Thornton Wilder...the homely, jaunty, gently poetic sound of it..."), to the cultural phenomenon that was Hello, Dolly!, which was based on Wilder's The Matchmaker. This is conjecture on our part, but suffice it to say we could not come up with another New York Jean and Walter that would fit the bill here. Regardless, an undeniably gorgeous, inscribed copy of a National Book Award winner: fine in a fine dust jacket -- so much so that we first wondered if this copy was a facsimile (it's not). First Edition. Hardcover.

Art Krebs Studio 1967 - Vintage original 26 x 35 ½" (66 x 90 cm.) silkscreen poster, USA. Our friend, poster collector and dealer Daniel Strebin, provided this information: About a decade ago, he received consignments of Saul Bass silkscreens from the Bass estate. He personally saw invoices for some of them which were printed around 1965. Most of the silkscreens were produced at Art Krebs Studio in Los Angeles. Bass continued to have silkscreens created up until around 1980. All of the silkscreen editions appear to have been in editions of between 50-150. It also seems that once an edition was exhausted, Bass did not make a second edition; as s a result, all of these art silkscreens are very rare indeed. Bass never intended for these posters to be sold -- they were intended to be given away. Since he was frequently frustrated with the compromises the film studios inflicted on his magnificent modernist designs, the silkscreens were intended to represent his imagery in its purest possible form. This was for the U.S. release of a French film by Claude Berri, about a young Jewish boy who goes to live with a Catholic couple in France during World War II. The husband (Michel Simon), who does not know his young charge is Jewish, is in fact a virulent anti-Semite, but comes to love the young man and outgrow his prejudices. The original U.S. theatrical one sheet poster has a similar design, but it is only printed in black, with an obtrusive slogan at the top -- making this silkscreen infinitely more effective. Unfolded, VERY GOOD.

House of Bondage: A South African Black Man Exposes in His Own Pictures and Words the Bitter Life of His Homeland Today

New York: Random House, 1967. First edition. Quarto, original cloth. Signed by Ernest Cole on the title page. Bookplate on the verso of the front free endpaper, fine in a fine dust jacket. A searing exposé of the social and economic effects of apartheid on South Africa's black population, House of Bondage was banned by the government…Authored by a self-taught black South African photojournalist, Ernest Cole, [it] shows his experience of apartheid from the inside. To do this, Cole managed to get himself officially reclassified as 'coloured' rather than 'black… gaining for himself more freedom of movement to carry out his self-imposed assignment" (Parr & Badger II:93, 106).

        [Ten Signed Postcards]

[ca. 1967-1971]. Very good. 10 postcards, various sizes. Very good or better overall. Usual marks from mailing. Mild edge-wear and some toning. A series of ten signed holograph postcards (selections below) from Sol LeWitt to NYC-based sculptor and performance artist Marjorie Strider, mailed over the course of five years, majority from Europe and various other overseas travels. Most include typical postcard sentiments. Several are more substantive, discussing sales, openings, work, etc. One card includes original Lewitt drawing of a red heart in a black box. Holograph material from Le- Witt is decidedly uncommon in the marketplace.
