        The Gnadiges Fraulein

      Dramatists Play Service, Inc., New York 1967 - First edition, first issue. Stapled printed wrappers. A small tear on the title page, probably torn when the book was inscribed, else fine in wrappers. One of 1000 copies printed. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To my dearest girl in the USA. Love, Tennessee." In Williams' *Memoirs* he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's *No Exit* in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on *West Side Story*. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of *Eloise*, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title *Requiem for a Nun*, a sequel to his early and controversial novel *Sanctuary*, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (*Requiem for a Nun* was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association.         Chief Joseph - Nez Percé

      [Boston: D. Sacilotto for Charles Lauriat's, 1967. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on American Indians, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. "The name of Chief Joseph is better known, than that of any other Northwestern Indian." (Curtis, List of Large Plates Supplementing Volume Eight) Also known as Hin-mah-too-yah-lat-kekt, or Thunder Rolling Down the Mountain, Chief Joseph was born in the Wallowa Valley in northeastern Oregon in 1840. He was primarily renowned for his short-lived resistance to U.S. attempts to move his people to a reservation in Idaho, a valiant endeavour that culminated in the Bear Paw Battle. The culturally diverse Nez Percé inhabited the Great Basin region of the United States and were skilled horse breeders and hunters. The original edition of Curtis' The North American Indian had 214 subscribers and Curtis himself handled the distribution. After Curtis declared bankruptcy, the booksellers Charles Lauriat's of Boston purchased the outstanding stock, and the edition from which this print comes was commissioned in order to complete a number of incomplete portfolios. According to information supplied by the printers, the edition was strictly limited with only 17 sets being produced. Edward Curtis was fascinated with the story of the American Indian from an early age, honing both his knowledge of them and his skill as a photographer on numerous scientific expeditions in the 1890s. With the enthusiastic backing of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword), Curtis evolved his plan for a comprehensive work that would illustrate his romantic vision of American Indian life before the disastrous impact of European contact. He obtained the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan, whose support (and later, that of his son) enabled the project to go forward. What had originally been projected to take five or six years stretched to twenty-three, consumed $1,200,000 (a third in subsidy from the Morgans), and finally reached a conclusion in 1930, leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, he succeeded in accomplishing his grand design, and the set remains his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965. Photogravure by Curtis, finely printed from the original plate, on wove paper watermarked "Tweedweave", by the master printmaker D. Sacilotto. A rare edition, not to be confused with later restrikes.         A Lovely Way to Die (Original screenplay for the 1967 film)

      Universal Pictures, Universal City, CA 1967 - Final Script for the 1967 film, "A Lovely Way to Die," directed by David Lowell Rich, written for the screen by A.J. Russell, and starring Kirk Douglas and Eli Wallach. An important transitional crime film, borrowing the "hard-boiled cop turns in his badge and does things his way" theme that was introduced during the film noir era (e.g., "Rogue Cop," "The Big Heat") and transitioning it to the color film era, predicting a new kind of film that would come in the early 1970s, the most notable example being "Dirty Harry." In this case, the cop is Kirk Douglas, with Eli Wallach in a typically fascinating role as a disarming but ruthlessly effective private investigator. The titular opening song is delivered by Jackie Wilson, and this was the film debut of Ali McGraw. Red studio wrappers, stamped FINAL SCREENPLAY on the front wrapper, and dated May 2, 1967. Title page present, noting that the original working title was "The Pineapple Print," with a credit for screenwriter Russell. A "rainbow copy," 135 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with green, blue, pink, and yellow revision pages throughout. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.         Handbill for the Human Be-In

      San Francisco: Bindwood Press. (1967). Handbill announcing "A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In" and listing some of the participants -- Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jerry Rubin, Timothy Leary, Dick Gregory, "All SF Rock Groups," etc. along with the pertinent details: "Saturday Jan 14 1-5 P.M., Free, Polo Field, Golden Gate Park." The Human Be-In was conceived as another of the unstructured celebrations of the San Francisco hippie community, in the tradition of the earlier Trips Festival. The presence of a roster of superstar figures was intended to help draw out the largest possible crowd, but the star of the event was intended to be the crowd itself. Indeed, the speakers could not be heard much of the time but no one much cared. The bands played in the afternoon, and included Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, and others. After the sound system broke down at one point, it was announced that the generator would hereafter be guarded by the Hell's Angels. The event went smoothly: tens of thousands of people showed up, many smoking pot or tripping on LSD, but the police kept a low profile and didn't arrest any of the people openly smoking pot; a priest from the San Francisco Zen Temple meditated on stage throughout the day. At the end of the day, Gary Snyder blew a conch shell -- a traditional Japanese Buddhist ritual instrument -- and Allen Ginsberg led a Buddhist chant, at which point the crowd drifted apart. The Human Be-In became one of the milestone events of the emerging counterculture and, in retrospect, one of its high points. It succeeded for a time in bridging the gap between the San Francisco hippie culture and the Berkeley-based radical political movement, finding some common ground for the two -- a joining of two disparate, and sometimes divergent, movements that has had repercussions to the present day: today, cultural experimentation and alternative lifestyles go hand in hand with political critique, a trend that was considerably more uncommon prior to this occasion. There were several variant designs for the poster: this one was designed by Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley and Michael Bowen and was the original poster design -- an image of an Indian swami with a third eye added by Mouse. The image was also used as the cover for issue number 5 of the Oracle, the San Francisco underground newspaper, which took on a decidedly more psychedelic look with this number, timed to coincide with the festival. Reportedly, Mouse wasn't especially happy with the design: he felt that the image of the Hindu holy man had been foisted on him, which helps explain the number of different posters for the event. Purple and gray on white. 8-1/2" x 11". Fine. (Jerry Rubin's last name is misspelled as "Ruben.") Scarce and ephemeral; it would seem that few of these have survived.

      1967-1975. A collection of approximately 120 large format, handmade and heavily hand-decorated postcards and letters, mostly with envelopes. Various dates from 1967-1975, all by Mrs. Brightman of Akron, Ohio to Ned Osthaus of Scranton, Pennsylvania. The content and accompanying art are highly eccentric, very entertaining, and occasionally slightly addled. Many are patriotic or moralistic in tone. Virtually all of the cards and letters are heavily painted, as are most of the envelopes. Several of the envelopes are made from busily patterned wrapping paper, some of which are additionally embellished, some not. Minor wear at the edges, else fine. .

Large poster advertisement for the 1967 exhibition at the Modern Museum in Stockholm: the first full-scale retrospective of Raoul Hausmann's artwork.Hausmann, one of the key founders of the Berlin Dada movement, instigated several important firsts in the modern art movement. In 1917-1918 he invented the optophonetic poem and photomontage, and published the first Dada Manifesto; his pioneering work in photography and numerous writings (manifestos and institutional critiques) had a profound influence on the European Avant-Garde throughout the 1930s-1940s; and in 1958 he helped to found the Fluxus movement.The poster reproduces his most famous work: "Mechanischer Kopf (Der Geist Unserer Zeit)," circa 1919-1920. Constructed from a hairdresser's wig-making dummy, the piece has various measuring devices attached: a ruler, a pocket watch mechanism, a typewriter, some camera segments, and a crocodile wallet. Interpreted by critics as a Marxist reversal of Hegel, "a head whose thoughts are materially determined by objects literally fixed to it," Hausmann himself likened it to the average German of the day, who has "no more capabilities than those which chance has glued on the outside of his skull; his brain remains empty."Hausmann also played an important role in the Neo-Dada and Fluxus movements inspired by the famous 1958 Dada exhibition in Frankfurt-Dusseldorf, which included many of his artworks. By the time of his 1967 retrospective, Hausmann had formed close personal and working relationships with the leading figures of both intertwined movements, including Jasper Johns, Robert Rauschenberg, Yves Klein, and fluxus-impresario George Maciunas, who had assumed the leadership role in Fluxus "happenings."Maciunas included Hausmann's works in the earliest happenings or "Fluxfests," and had initially referred to the movement as "neo-dadaism." In a letter to Maciunas from 1962, Hausmann discouraged the use of the term: "I note with much pleasure what you said about German neodadaists---but I think even the Americans should not use the term "neodadaism" because neo means nothing and -ism is old-fashioned. Why not simply "Fluxus"? It seems to me much better, because it's new, and dada is historic." A very scarce, beautifully printed copy of the Stockholm poster, well-preserved in a clean wood and glass frame. .

        The Ticket That Exploded

      New York: Grove Press, Inc.. (1967). First. First American edition. Fine in a very slightly age-toned, else fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Burroughs to Ruth Ford: "For Ruth Ford, William S. Burroughs." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Tennessee Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A nice association. .

      Random House, New York 1967 - First edition. The stiff softcover issue. One of the best books the pop-art era. A highly inventive book with all of the pop-ups and inserts present and in fine condition but with the typical decay to the balloon which has stuck to the pages were it was originally inserted and with the string detached from the dodecahedron. Many of the photographs in the book were taken by a young Stephen Shore. A fresh and tight very near fine copy in silver wrappers. A much nicer than usual copy of this fragile book.
