        Handbill for the Human Be-In

San Francisco: Bindwood Press. (1967). Handbill announcing "A Gathering of the Tribes for a Human Be-In" and listing some of the participants -- Allen Ginsberg, Gary Snyder, Jerry Rubin, Timothy Leary, Dick Gregory, "All SF Rock Groups," etc. along with the pertinent details: "Saturday Jan 14 1-5 P.M., Free, Polo Field, Golden Gate Park." The Human Be-In was conceived as another of the unstructured celebrations of the San Francisco hippie community, in the tradition of the earlier Trips Festival. The presence of a roster of superstar figures was intended to help draw out the largest possible crowd, but the star of the event was intended to be the crowd itself. Indeed, the speakers could not be heard much of the time but no one much cared. The bands played in the afternoon, and included Quicksilver Messenger Service, the Grateful Dead, Jefferson Airplane, Country Joe and the Fish, and others. After the sound system broke down at one point, it was announced that the generator would hereafter be guarded by the Hell's Angels. The event went smoothly: tens of thousands of people showed up, many smoking pot or tripping on LSD, but the police kept a low profile and didn't arrest any of the people openly smoking pot; a priest from the San Francisco Zen Temple meditated on stage throughout the day. At the end of the day, Gary Snyder blew a conch shell -- a traditional Japanese Buddhist ritual instrument -- and Allen Ginsberg led a Buddhist chant, at which point the crowd drifted apart. The Human Be-In became one of the milestone events of the emerging counterculture and, in retrospect, one of its high points. It succeeded for a time in bridging the gap between the San Francisco hippie culture and the Berkeley-based radical political movement, finding some common ground for the two -- a joining of two disparate, and sometimes divergent, movements that has had repercussions to the present day: today, cultural experimentation and alternative lifestyles go hand in hand with political critique, a trend that was considerably more uncommon prior to this occasion. There were several variant designs for the poster: this one was designed by Stanley Mouse, Alton Kelley and Michael Bowen and was the original poster design -- an image of an Indian swami with a third eye added by Mouse. The image was also used as the cover for issue number 5 of the Oracle, the San Francisco underground newspaper, which took on a decidedly more psychedelic look with this number, timed to coincide with the festival. Reportedly, Mouse wasn't especially happy with the design: he felt that the image of the Hindu holy man had been foisted on him, which helps explain the number of different posters for the event. Purple and gray on white. 8-1/2" x 11". Fine. (Jerry Rubin's last name is misspelled as "Ruben.") Scarce and ephemeral; it would seem that few of these have survived.

He spent a long period in isolation, living in a rented residence in Jamaica with no telephone, composing the book. In recent decades, it lapsed out of print until Beacon Press published an expanded edition in 2010, which featured a new introduction passage by Vincent Gordon Harding.King looks back at the civil rights struggle of the 1950s and 1960s. He discusses the question of what African-Americans should do with their new, dearly fought for freedoms found in laws such as the Voting Rights Act of 1965. He concludes that all Americans black and white must unite in order to fight poverty and create a new equality of opportunity. King emphasizes that he is neither a Marxist nor a doctrinaire socialist; he instead advocates for a united social movement that would act within both the Republican and Democratic parties. Background:Martin Luther King, Jr. (January 15, 1929 ?" April 4, 1968) was an American pastor, activist, humanitarian, and leader in the African-American Civil Rights Movement. He is best known for his role in the advancement of civil rights using nonviolent civil disobedience based on his Christian beliefs. On October 14, 1964, King received the Nobel Peace Prize for combating racial inequality through nonviolence. In 1965, he and the SCLC helped to organize the Selma to Montgomery marches and the following year, he took the movement north to Chicago to work on segregated housing. In the final years of his life, King expanded his focus to include poverty and the Vietnam War, alienating many of his liberal allies with a 1967 speech titled "Beyond Vietnam".In 1968, King was planning a national occupation of Washington, D.C., to be called the Poor People's Campaign, when he was assassinated on April 4 in Memphis, Tennessee. His death was followed by riots in many U.S. cities. Allegations that James Earl Ray, the man convicted of killing King, had been framed or acted in concert with government agents persisted for decades after the shooting. The jury of a 1999 civil trial found Loyd Jowers to be complicit in a conspiracy against King. The ruling has since been discredited and a sister of Jowers admitted that he had fabricated the story so he could make $300,000 from selling the story, and she in turn corroborated his story in order to get some money to pay her income tax.Condition:Condition is Very Good.  Small wear to edges, slight bumped upper corners, few highlighted passages about 10 pages, rest of pages/hinges/text block are very good/excellent for over 45 years old!!!

Report on the UFO Wave of 1947

No Location: National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena [NICAP], 1967 [no location, but author's preface was written in Washington, D.C]: NICAP [uncredited][National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena], 1967. First Edition. Introduction by Dr. James E. McDonald. Quarto, white wraps imprinted in black. Non-traditionally paginated. Text, charts, case histories, listing of witnesses. Nearly flawless but for coffee stain at extreme corner of back cover and that corner tip of a number of pages, not affecting any text. A solid Very Good. Rare first edition of the absolutely remarkable 1967 research opus of ufologist Ted Bloecher, on the question of just what it was that started in June of 1947 - and why. Kenneth Arnold's famous Cascade Mountain sighting then got the headlines, but there was a crush of American sightings that summer, and more than 850 of them are in this dense and absorbing compendium. University of Arizona Senior Physicist for the Institute of Atmospheric Physics Dr. James McDonald, in his introduction, summarized what this meant: "What I see in all this as primarily important is the abundance of good case-material scattered through a dross of less reliable reports - an abundance that official agencies should have recognized by late 1947 as constituting a problem of the utmost scientific importance. No such recognition appears to have occurred" - and in so saying, echoed through to today's international bafflement about that very question. Bloecher himself, a Columbia drama/theater grad, chose to say the same with a more colorful quote from Charles Fort: "The little harlots will caper, and freaks will distract attention, and the clowns will break the rhythm of the whole with their buffooneries--but the solidity of the procession as a whole; the impressiveness of things that pass and pass, and keep on and keep on and keep on coming; the irresistibleness of things that neither threaten nor jeer nor defy, but arrange themselves in mass-formations that pass and pass and keep on passing. So, by the damned, I mean the excluded." Then, Bloecher makes the same point yet again, far more eloquently than either of the first two: he simply presents data, page after page of it; he presents "the things that pass" themselves, in the detail his research has afforded. No one can read this without feeling that recognition the absence of which McDonald lamented. Certainly one of the best researched and most seriously presented UFO reports in history; perhaps the single most so. So important, in fact, that Project 1947 has, with permission, recently reprinted the entire book - something which seldom occurs among serious UFO research reports. Originally published for Bloecher by NICAP, which he joined after his CSI group became defunct, though NICAP is not internally credited for the publication. A piece of history within the field. First Edition. L102

        THE MASTER AND MARGARITA

Paris: YMCA Press, 1967. First edition. Very Good +. First edition in book form, preceded only by the Moscow Magazine printing. Perfect-bound in printed wraps, text in Russian. An attractive Very Good+ (or a little better) copy with minor toning and a faint bend to the covers. Otherwise, this copy is clean, unread and in excellent condition. Scarce on the market in any condition. Housed in custom clamshell. This book is the author's masterpiece and considered by many the finest novel to come out of Russia in the twentieth century. Started in 1928, Bulgakov burned the manuscript in 1930, only to re-write and revise it for the next ten years until his death. A socio-political satire oscillating between two realities, one where the Devil and his entourage take a flat in 1930s Russia and wreak havoc on society in a series of amusing escapades, the second in Pontius Pilot's Jerusalem, where he condemns Jesus, despite grave misgivings. A work of unique humor and profound insight, it builds upon the great 19th century Russian predecessors and is now a foundation of the modern Russian literary canon. Very Good +.

Ritual --- Murder, Witchcraft and Paganism in a Cornish Village ---- Filmed as The Wicker Man

London: Hutchinson / New Authors Limited, 1967, 1st Edition, 1st Printing, 1967, Hard Cover, Book Condition: Near Fine, Dust Jacket Condition: Near Fine, First Edition, Illustrated By: Peter Edwards Cover Art-----------hardcover, a Near Fine copy in a Near Fine dustjacket with a tiny bit of rubbing to the edges, a beautiful clean bright example of the Peter Edwards designed dustjacket, very scarce book, later filmed and released as The Wicker Man which was novelized by Robin Hardy, and Anthony Shaffer, however, this is not the novelization ---this is the book from which the film was created, from the cover of the later paperback edition, "A child lies dead in the Cornish village of Thorn, the circumstances point to a ritual killing. But when detective Inspector david Hanlin is sent from London to investigate the matter, he discovers that Thorn has sinister and erotic undertones; murmurs of witchcraft and whispers of occult happenings; as well as a Midsummer Eve ritual that stems from a pagan past.", ---a strange book with episodes of blatant sexuality, paranoia, witchcraft, murder, etc., extremely well written although the climax, ultimately is not very surprising, any image directly beside this listing is the actual book and not a generic photo
