Primary Colors of Japanese Art 13: Partition and Sliding Door Paintings (Genshoku Nihon no Bijutsu 13: Shoubyouga)

Shougakukan [Shogakkan, Shogakukan], Tokyo 1967 - Tokyo: Shogakkan (Shougakukan, Shogakukan), 1967. First Edition, First Printing. Folio, 14 1/4" x 10" , 232 pp. Profusely illustrated with plates and gatefolds. Text in Japanese, with English translation for list of plates. Cloth, pictorial jackey, pictoiral slipcase. Book is in fine condition, jacket in sharp near fine; slipcase shows some soiling and edgewear, is very good. Number 13 in Shogakkan's deluxe and comprehensive - and oversized - 30-volume series, Genshoku Nihon no Bijutsu, treating the primary colors of Japanese art. This volume focuses on Partition and Sliding Door paintings, and includes 146 pages illustrating 105 works of art with several gatefolds, followed by 86 pages of an in-depth text section (in Japanese) with black and white illustrations. Bear in mind that this book reads in traditional Japanese format, starting from what we in the west would call the back of the book, so the text portion, to a westerner, is at the "front". Beautiful, large, rarely accessible in the west in any form; this is a first printing. Lavish format. L49 [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Poetry in the Making - SIGNED & LETTERED

London: Turret Books, 1967 - Cloth. Fine/Fine. Limited/Numbered. Signed by Authors. This is a very rare book indeed, one of only twenty six lettered and signed copies. This catalogue of an exhibition at the British Museum was published as a hardbound book, and made available in two limited editions. 100 copies were numbered, but just 26 copies were lettered and signed. This is letter 'R'. Clean and tight book, in a complete and protected jacket. A real rarity, with a superb essay by Larkin. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead.

Grove Press, New York 1967 - First American edition of the playwright's classic work. Octavo, original cloth. Fine in a fine near fine dust jacket with a small closed tear to the front panel. Inscribed and dated by the author. Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead is the fabulously inventive tale of Hamlet as told from the worm's-eye view of the bewildered Rosencrantz and Guildenstern, two minor characters in Shakespeare's play. In Tom Stoppard's best-known work, this Shakespearean Laurel and Hardy finally get a chance to take the lead role, but do so in a world where echoes of Waiting for Godot resound, where reality and illusion intermix, and where fate leads our two heroes to a tragic but inevitable end. "Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead [is] verbally dazzling the most exciting, witty intellectual treat imaginable." (Edith Oliver, The New Yorker).         The Eighth Day [Inscribed Association Copy]

NY: Harper. (1967). The three-time Pulitzer Prize-winning (Our Town, The Skin of Our Teeth, The Bridge of San Luis Rey) author's National Book Award winning novel. Inscribed by the author: "For JEAN and WALTER with deep regard and affection ever/ Thornton/ March 21, 1967." The names are printed large, with "Jean" in a different pen, whilst the rest of the inscription is in small cursive. We are unaware of the point of this. We do know, from another inscription, that Wilder was in New York on this date, and that he had reason to behold the Pulitzer Prize-winning critic Walter Kerr and his wife, the writer Jean Kerr (of Please Don't Eat the Daisies fame) with deep regard and affection: Walter Kerr lauded Wilder's work repeatedly in the 1960s, from his off-Broadway work ("the very special voice of Thornton Wilder...the homely, jaunty, gently poetic sound of it..."), to the cultural phenomenon that was Hello, Dolly!, which was based on Wilder's The Matchmaker. This is conjecture on our part, but suffice it to say we could not come up with another New York Jean and Walter that would fit the bill here. Regardless, an undeniably gorgeous, inscribed copy of a National Book Award winner: fine in a fine dust jacket -- so much so that we first wondered if this copy was a facsimile (it's not). First Edition. Hardcover.

Overall size: 282mm x 170mm. Eighteen [18] pages have de-bossed and the odd embossed engravings including the inside cover and text numbered I-XVIII, [the number V appears twice although it has a different etching on each page. Number XII is omitted.] Protective tissue throughout. The text and the eighteen engravings which accompany them together with the cover were all executed by Milshtein. The engravings were hand pressed by the artist and the original pages engraved after printing. The condition is very good with the exception of the spine on the inner hard cover being detached and taped. One or two etchings have very feint foxing spots (negligible). BIO NOTES: Zwy Milshtein is well known in France as a painter and as a master at the art of engraving. Milshtein was born in 1934 in Kichinev, the area now known as Moldovia. During the World War II his family emigrated to Russia, and then later returned to Romania. In 1948 Milshtein arrived in Israel, but later moved to Paris in 1955. Since that time he has received great acclaim for his etchings and engravings. Numerous exhibitions in Paris and abroad attest to his artistic skills. In the year 1970 Milshtein had an exhibition at ARC, the Museum of Modern Art, Paris, France. In 1978 a retrospective exhibition of his engravings was held at the Bibliotheque Nationale in Paris. In 1997 his work was featured in the Hans Christian Andersen House project which selected top European artists to create an homage to celebrate the bi-centennial birthday of the famous Danish author.       Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City 1967 - INSCRIBED and SIGNED with a felt-tip pen on the half-title page by the author "For ----/With thanks and best wishes/Robert Kennedy." Books authentically signed by Robert Kennedy are uncommon, and this one is rather special as it was signed shortly before he was assassinated. Laid into the book are three interesting pieces of ephemera. One is a small printed invitation from the Colorado United Democrats for Humphrey to a "Coffee with the Vice President" for May 10. On the verso the inscribee of the Kennedy book has written a note stating that the signed book from Kennedy was received in the mail on 10 June 1968 as a gift for his work on the Kennedy-McCarthy coalition in Denver "where we shut out Hubert Humphrey." Also laid in is the top portion of the brown envelope that contained the book from the Kennedy for President Headquarters postmarked 2 June 1968. Kennedy was assassinated on 5 June 1968. Finally, there is a memorial card for RFK with a portrait of him on the recto and a long quote from RFK's extemporaneous remarks on the death of Martin Luther King. The dustwrapper is complete including the price with some abrasion to the spine and wrinkling and rubbing to the rear. Very Good or better in a near Very Good dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

To Seek a Newer World, + Signed Letter

Doubleday, Garden City 1967 - Politics. First edition stated. Blue cloth covers very nice, a little wear to the corners, spine ends bumped, corners sharp, interior clean and tight. Dust jacket has a little edge wear, a little rubbed. Inscribed and signed in black felt tip pen on the front endpaper by Kennedy to Cathy Aldridge, a columnist with the Amsterdam News, an activist paper based on Amsterdam Avenue, New York City - WITH a signed letter to Ms. Aldridge on his Senate letterhead, dated July 1, 1967, in the original envelope, congratulating her on an award. The letter is crisp and bright. The envelope is sunned, and chipped on one end. There is a possibility that the signature is an auto-pen, but I don't think so, as it does not match the franking signature on the Senate envelope. Very nice association copy.
