1967. PICASSO, Pablo. Les Transparents. By René Char. With 5 cardboard-cuts by Picasso. Folio, loose as issued in the publisher's wrappers and a cloth folding box. Ales: PAB, 1967. |~||~||~||~||~| A unique copy of this marvellous collaboration between three good friends, André Benoit, René Char and Picasso. René Char's poems tell of "Transparents," beings who appear as enlightened and affable vagabonds. Picasso made a total of five cardboard cuts - mysterious faces at once animal and human - of which four appear in the regular edition, and the fifth only with the first ten copies which were accompanied by a suite on Chine. This copy is one of the fifty with an extra handwritten colophon by Benoit, and is accompanied by two signed impressions on Chine, one version each of the extra plate on Chine and on Rives and 4 impressions on various papers.         President John F. Kennedy and my son Lee Harvey Oswald were of one mind on many important issues. It is my opinion that they were both murdered for the same reasons." an amazing archive of Lee Harvey Oswald's mother, Marguerite, and her efforts to clear her son's name. Over 30 pages of material referencing Jim Garrison's 1967 interview with "Playboy" magazine, an anonymous eyewitness's account of the shooting Officer Tippitt, and much more

Archive of letters, mostly typed, 32+ pages total, most measuring 8.5? x 11?, looking for the ?smoking gun? ?" concrete proof of who actually killed President John F. Kennedy. The archive includes two typed letters signed "Marguerite Oswald", the first being a transmittal letter to Michael Laurence of ?Playboy? magazine and the second being a 2-page letter addressed ?Letter to the Editor?, detailing her reaction to the lengthy interview the magazine ran in the October 1967 issue of ?Playboy? with Jim Garrison, the controversial District Attorney from New Orleans. In this interview, Garrison discusses his findings regarding the CIA, the FBI, Lee Harvey Oswald, David Ferrie & Clay Shaw, and what may be the truth behind the assassination.Excerpts of Marguerite Oswald?s letter read: ?...Garrison?s charges against the C.I.A....who, he says, killed the President and used my son Lee Harvey Oswald as the pawn...I have profound sympathy for what he is doing...my son was Innocent of the charges against him...I said my son was a C.I.A. agent and that men in high places used him...Four years have passed since they took my son?s life, prevented him from having a fair trial...the tide of doubt and revulsion against the ?Warren Report? has swept the Country...I see Playboy fairly and objectively presenting Garrison?s case...But the slayers of the President and my son, slew the morality of the nation...President John F. Kennedy and my son Lee Harvey Oswald were of one mind on many important issues. It is my opinion that they were both murdered for the same reasons...?. Other items in the archive include: signed letters of correspondence negotiating terms of payment for a "Letter to the editor" of Playboy by Marguerite C. With original postmarked U.S. Senate envelope and 6¢ machine cancel. Fine condition. In full, ?Dear Nick: I just wanted you to know how much I appreciated your phone call on my birthday. You were thoughtful to remember me. Sincerely, Robert F. Kennedy? Not signed. In his characteristic black marker, RFK added ?I hear you are going / to now be made / Assistant to the President / of the World Bank.? When Kennedy resigned as Attorney General to run for the U.S. Senate in 1964, he was succeeded by the Deputy Attorney General, Nicholas Katzenbach (1922-2012). In 1966, Katzenbach became LBJ?s Undersecretary of State, serving until the end of Johnson?s presidency in 1969. Katzenbach did not go to the World Bank; he was hired by IBM as General Counsel. His ?Washington Post? obituary described Katzenbach as ?an unflappable lawyer who served as the Kennedy brothers? emissary to the South during the violent confrontations over racial segregation in the early 1960s and who later was an architect of landmark civil rights laws and Vietnam War policy under President Lyndon Johnson.?

        The Indo-Greek Coins

Ludhiana: Indological Research Institute. Good+ in Good dust jacket. 1967. First Edition. Hardcover. Dampstains to lower margins of plates, extending a little into the printed area. Dampstains to lower part of rear panel of dustjacket. Some losses at head and tail of dustjacket spine and corners of dustjacket. Dustjacket protected in archival mylar cover. ; xvi, 196 pages + 7 plates. Red cloth boards. Page dimensions: 213 x 138mm. Dustjacket with two dates printed on it, "1967" and "1972". Uncommon. "This is the first attempt of its kind at critically studying the Indian coinage of any period from all possible angles, and presenting Indian numismatics as a distinct science. This monograph deals with the coinage issued by numerous princes of Greek origin, who in the second century B.C. established small kingdoms in Bactria, Afghanistan, Sindh, Baluchistan and parts of the Panjab. Literature takes very little notice of these princes. Coins remain our main source of information. The present work lays down, for the first time and at one place, the precise laws for interpreting history from the contemporary coinage, and also points out the limitations inherent in this type of evidence. He also refers to the unfinished ?'Charlie?' sequel, ?'Charlie in the White House?', but suggests he had no plans to complete it; one handwritten letter is from the UK illustrator of Dahl?'s early books, Faith Jaques, chasing royalty payments, and one typed and annotated and signed in ink from Liccy, Dahl?'s widow, shortly after his death. Also included is the printed tribute by Peter Mayer, then CEO of Penguin, delivered at Dahl?'s funeral in Great Missenden. A fantastic publisher?'s collection of one of their most successful authors, the letters revealing a close and mutually appreciative working relationship. ?"If I were to knock on the door of any house in the world and a child were to answer it, the odds are even that I would be offered a cup of tea. Not many men can say that and I am proud of it.?" -Roald Dahl.

        Picnic at Hanging Rock

Melbourne: F.W. Cheshire, 1967 Melbourne: F.W. Cheshire, 1967. First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the author on the half-title, dated May, 1968, noting a venue which is a bit scrawled, looking like 'Barcle' or 'Barclay', but which I am informed was, in fact, probably, her home at Baxter, on the Mornington Peninsula, Victoria, Australia. Octavo, 212 pp. Green cloth, gilt spine lettering, pictorial jacket. Some dustiness to page edges, corners and spine ends just touched, somewhat less of the spine lean typical of this book than usual, but there is notable spine lean. Board splay, also typical of this inexpensively produced book, is almost altogether absent here. Jacket shows some rubbing and soiling, light peripheral wear. Book and jacket both better than very good. A very scarce signed copy [provenance provided] of what is certainly the masterwork of Joan Lindsay, world-traveling author and wife of artist/art director Sir Daryl Lindsay. Basis of an absolutely singular film by Peter Weir - the film initially received polite hand-patting applause from critics as a period piece; then real, living movie-goers noticed the profound sense of ineffable natural mystery in the film, so well translated from Lindsay by Weir. The depth of this primal enigma - nature as an unknowable entity, too ancient and too alien to be anything so familiar as "evil" - was heightened by the book's rumored and still-controversial true-story status [Lindsay thoroughly enjoyed never answering that question, and she's long since passed on now; she did, however, write a paperbound "eighteenth chapter" which, to my mind, gives a subtle hint]. Either way, cult followers - now vast in number - of both the book and the film "get it" about this unforgettable story. As was the case with "Blade Runner" and others, many film critics, professionally trained in myopic parsing, didn't "get it" - until they had to. L4

        De la grammatologie.

(Paris), Minuet, 1967. 8vo. Original wrappers. An excellent, very nice, clean, and fresh copy, just a tiny bit weak at the inner hinges. Old owner's name to front free end-paper (Carl Lemke 13.3.69). 445, (3) pp.. First edition (20 Septembre, 1967, numéro 630) of Derrida's seminal main work, the foundational text for deconstructive criticism.1967 marks a turning point in the history of modern philosophy, constituting the birth of "Deconstruction". In this one year, Derrida publishes all of his three break-through books, "De la grammatologie", "L'écriture et la difference" and "La Voix et le phenomene", profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Although all three books are responsible for the introduction of Deconstruction, it is primarily "De la Grammatologie", Derrida's magnum opus, that has come to be associated with this groundbreaking concept."Jacques Derrida's revolutionary theories about deconstruction, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and structuralism, first voiced in the 1960's, forever changed the face of European and American criticism. The ideas in "De la grammatologie" sparked lively debates in intellectual circles that included students of literature, philosophy, and the humanities, inspiring these students to ask questions of their disciplines that had previously been considered improper. Thirty years later, the immense influence of Derrida's work is still igniting controversy..." (Review, Spivak's translation of Derrida's "Of Grammatology", 1997).Derrida's concern is to bring to light the binary schema that is hidden in all kinds of texts and ideas of culture. In the present text Derrida brilliantly reveals some of the principles of deconstruction, not through theoretical explication, but, rather, by demonstration, showing that the arguments promulgated by their subject-matter exceed and contradict the oppositional parameters in which they are situated. Put into other words, deconstruction seeks to expose, and then to subvert, the various binary oppositions that undergird our dominant ways of thinking. The ideas that Derrida here present have had an enormous impact on a number of the human sciences, including psychology, literary theory, cultural studies, linguistics, feminism, sociology and anthropology. Due to this work, a whole new world of problematic suppression and marginalisation has become apparent, making "De la grammatologie" one of the most important philosophical works of the later part of the 20th century. "One of the major works in the development of contemporary criticism and philosophy". (J. Hillis Miller, Yale University)
