[Vinyl Record]: The Velvet Underground 7" Single: "White Light/White Heat" / "Here She Comes Now"

USA: MGM Records. 1967. Original 7" vinyl 45 RPM promotional record. Pale blue "Special Disc Jockey Record" Verve label. Produced by Tom Wilson. Very good plus with a single scratch on the A side in original green paper sleeve with record company stamps. The third and final single for the Velvet Underground, this version was specifically sent out to radio stations as a promo for their 1968 second album, White Light/White Heat and includes the "special disc jockey record" label. White Light/White Heat was created after The Velvet Underground had broken their ties with Andy Warhol and after Nico left to pursue a solo career. The album experimented with the aesthetic that was the precursor to punk, with the band pursuing a stark contrast to their earlier work. John Cale said of the record, "while the debut had some moments of fragility and beauty, White Light/White Heat was consciously anti-beauty." .

        LORD OF LIGHT

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York 1967 - Octavo, cloth. Hugo award winner 1968, Nebula nominee, 1967. ".his most sustained single tale, richly conceived and plotted, exhilarating throughout its considerable length. Some of the crew of a human colony ship, which has deposited its settlers on a livable world, have made use of advanced Technology (including Identity Transfer) to ensconce themselves in the role of gods, selecting their role models from the Hindu pantheon, including a fatally attractive She figure. But where Hinduism flourishes, the Buddha - in the shape of the protagonist Sam - must follow; and his liberation of the humans of the planet, who are mortal descendants of the original settlers, takes on aspects of both Prometheus and Coyote the Trickster. At points, Sam may seem just another of Zelazny's stable of slangy, raunchy, over-loved immortals; but the end effect of the book is liberating, wise, lucid." - Clute (ed.), SFE online. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1310. Gerber, Utopian Fantasy (1973), p. 162. Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1251-56. A fine copy in a nearly fine dust jacket with mild rubbing to spine ends and corner tips, some mild rub spots to lower spine panel and to spine fold. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Le Samourai (Original French poster for the 1967 film)

N.p.: N.p., 1967. Vintage French large format poster (affiche) from the classic 1967 French film noir. Arguably Jean-Pierre Melville's crowning achievement (though we feel there are no low points among his crime films), wherein Delon plays an icy hitman who is utterly anonymous, living alone in a single bedroom apartment with only a small bird in a birdcage for company. Things are fine, and then he meets a woman. 47 x 63 inches (119 x 160 cm). On archival linen, and in a beautiful museum quality frame (though the poster on archival linen can be purchased without the frame at the same price and shipped rolled). Near Fine.         Citoyens de Beauté Poèmes.

Editions Subervie, . He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico to a Lebanese-Cuban father and a Mexican mother. Moving to Cuba at the age of six, Jamis trained at the San Alexandro Academy before gaining renown as an abstract painter. He was a member of the modernist group of Cuban painters known as "Las Once" ("The Eleven"). Jamís lived in Paris in the 1950s, and attended the Sorbonne. The surrealist writer Andre Breton was a supporter of his work, and he co-exhibited with the sculptor Agustin Cardenas. Jamis returned to Cuba in 1959 and became involved in a wide range of activities including teaching, painting, and writing. He served as cultural attache in the Cuban embassy in Mexico for over a decade. Jamis received the Casa de las Américas prize for his book Por Esta Libertad (For This Liberty). His paintings can be seen in collections in Cuba and abroad. He often used pseudonyms such as Fernando Moro, Onirio Estrada or the initials F.J.N. Jamis died in Havana in 1988. A bookshop is named after him in Calle Obispo in Havana Vieja. (Wikipedia) Jean Sénac (1926?-1973) was an Algerian author. Born of an unknown father in Béni Saf in the Oran region of Algeria, the "poet who signed with a sun", was murdered in Algiers on August 30, 1973. His murder remains unsolved. Besides his poems and writings, he was renowned for a long-running relationship and correspondences with Albert Camus. A portion of his papers are stored at the City Archives in Marseille, France. Jean Sénac was an Algerian francophone poet who remained strongly attached to his Algerian nationality despite the French exodus from Algeria in the aftermath of the war of liberation. His poems were largely songs of revolution, which he hoped would help create a world of beauty and brotherhood in an Algeria that was open to all cultures. His own struggles were strongly linked with his quest to better Algeria through poetry: a profound search for identity, both personal and cultural and his struggle to find acceptance in his homosexuality plagued him throughout his life; "This poor body also/ Wants its war of independence", he once wrote. Sénac was a great admirer of the work of such poets as Gérard de Nerval, Arthur Rimbaud, Antonin Artaud and Jean Genêt. Jean Sénac had a long-running friendship with French Algerian-born writer and Literary Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus that lasted from 1947 to 1958. The contents of the letters remain mostly unknown, although Hamid Nacer-Khodja published a few and wrote about the history of the friendship in his essay Le Fils rebelle. many correspondences are of a literary nature, but some also discuss the independence movement in Algeria. In April 1958 he broke relations with Albert Camus on a sour note blaming him for not supporting the plight of an Algerian student named Taleb executed for his political activities against the French. He did not communicate further with Camus from that day on until Camus' death early 1960. (Wikipedia)

ORIGINAL PROTEST FLYERS FOR "CANDLE OPERA - A FREE DIGGERS SHOW, PART OF THE SPRING MOBILIZATION" & "JOYFUL ALTERNATIVE PEACE POETS DANCE"

San Francisco: Spring Mobilization Committee To End The War, 1967. A pair of illustrated flyers used to advertise anti-war protests during the Spring of 1967. The events advertised were the 'Candle Opera' and the 'Joyful Alternative Peace Poets Dance,' held between April 13-14, 1967 with the intention of leading up to the Spring Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam demonstration on April 15th. The Spring Mobilization, or Spring Mobe, was part of the nationwide protest against the war in Vietnam, organized in November 1966 to sponsor antiwar demonstrations in the Spring of 1967. Two mass demonstrations were planned, one in New York City and the other in San Francisco. On April 15, 1967 more than 125,000 people marched against the war in New York; in San Francisco 60,000 people demonstrated. Up until this time, the Spring Mobilization was the largest anti-war demonstration in our country's history. The 'Candle Opera' was a Diggers-sponsored event in the panhandle of Golden Gate State Park. The flyer notes "candles, incense, and love" as part the event, along with musical performances by Country Joe and The Fish, New Age, Mad River, All Night Apothecary, Morning Glory, Moebius, and other bands. Although his name is not mentioned anywhere on the flyer, Richard Brautigan was reading poetry that night, and is credited with conceiving the name of the event. Brautigan, who collaborated on a number of events with the Diggers throughout the 1960's, is prominently mentioned on the flyer for the 'Joyful Alternative Peace Poets Dance.' He participated by reading poetry at the event, which ran from 8:00 PM - 2:00 AM at California Hall, 425 Polk Street, San Francisco, a large building owned by the German-American Association. No copies listed in OCLC. Rare pieces of paper and interesting relics of Haight-Ashbury's heyday, desirable both to collectors of Brautigan material as well as those interested in the history of the anti-war movement. The 'Candle Opera' flyer measures 8 X 10.5 inches, original xerox on white paper, with print on recto; Near Fine, with a little even toning to the paper and the upper left corner creased. The flyer for the 'Joyful Alternative' measures 8.5 X 11 inches, a single mimeographed sheet printed recto and verso in red and black on pale green paperstock. Recto displays artwork and design by Kenneth Patchen, with the verso printing a map of mobilization points, endorsements, and partial list of sponsors. Near Fine, with some toning and creasing at the extremities and a single, nearly invisible pinhole. Provenance: From the collection of John Bryan, editor of the L.A. Free Press and publisher of the the far left Open City Newspaper.

Hell's Angels: A Strange and Terrible Saga (Modern Library)

New York: Random House, 1967. 275 Pages. A small bookseller label on the back endpaper. No other defects noted. Beautiful black cloth with embossed silver motorcycle decoration on the front. Top page edges are black. Red and silver lettering on the spine. Interior text is flawless. Dust jacket is price clipped and light wear to edges. The story began for Hunter Thompson in a sleazy San Francisco dive, where he met some of the Angels, but from there it took unpredictable shifts as he personally became more and more involved with violence- finally pushing his luck too far. The book reads like a novel, with exciting tales and life-size characters: Charger Charley the Child Molester, Big Frank who jerks out eyeballs, the woman who feels a faint burning in her nerves every time she hears a motorcycle; Tiny, the Angels' enforcer, who earns his living as a bill collector; latent homosexuals, runaway virgins, Mama Lorraine, auctioned off for twelve cents; and a mind-spinning finale of hired private gunmen, country toughs, a giddy chamber of commerce, capacity crowd of bystanders, detectives, vigilantes, and fired-up cops. This book is part of a broad comment on the modern tendency to violence. But it is also a book to read for pure entertainment- written with energy and the intensity and excitement of a man who can't slow down. And neither will the reader, as the outlaws sweep past like a burst of dirty thunder. . First Printing Stated on Copyright Page. Hard Back. Near Fine/Very Good. Illus. by Davidovich, Jaime - Design. 5 3/4" x 8 1/2".

        ANDY WARHOL'S INDEX (BOOK)

New York: Random House, 1967. First edition. Near Fine. 4to. 11" x 8.25". pp. [68] plus pictorial endpapers. Cloth-backed boards with holographic cover. A Near Fine example of this notoriously fragile production. Boards are bright and sharp; pages clean. Main faults are typical: balloon perished with attendant offsetting and adhesion of surrounding pages, as in all copies; lacking uncommon original plastic sleeve. Otherwise all remaining elements present and functional. All pop-ups work, including the accordion (which retains its squeak!). Interview disk attached. Dodecahedron unfolded with string still attached and with the original rubber band. "Chelsea Girls" disk still attached to original spring. Retaining six of the eight tabs on the "Big Surprise" page. A much nicer copy than typically encountered. Warhol's famed "pop-up book for hipsters" and one of the best documents to emerge from The Factory. A Roth 101 selection. "[O]ne of the most important and exuberant Pop art objects ever published [...] it is also one of the ultimate photobooks-as-objects" (Parr & Badger 144-5). Near Fine.

        TOPAZ

1967 - URIS, Leon. TOPAZ. NY: McGraw-Hill, [1967]. 8vo., cloth in dust jacket. First Edition, fifth printing. With a signed presentation from Uris on the front endpaper: "For Leon Mishkin, Shalom. Leo Uris." Most interesting- also with a signed presentation from Alfred Hitchcock, who directed the movie, on a front blank page: "To Leo Mishkin from Alfred Hitchcock." With a caricature of Hitchcock, drawn by himself below his signature. Mishkin was an entertainment reviewer with the "New York Morning-Telegraph." Finding both signatures in this particular title is scarce, with Hitchcock's signature and caricature always in demand. A lovely copy except for some very light dampstaining along the lower edge of front cover with related, darker dampstaining to the lower interior edge of the dust jacket. Even with these flaws the book is quite stunning to behold. Enclosed in a custom-designed, black leather & cloth clam-shell box, spine stamped in gilt with black raised-leather depicting a spy, with "Topaz" in leather lettering beneath. $2800.00.         The Fearless Vampire Killers [The Vampire Killers] (Original screenplay for the 1967 film)

London: Cadre Films, 1967. Draft British script for the 1967 film. An elderly professor (MacGowran) and his assistant, Alfred (Polanski), go to Transylvania looking for vampires, where Alfred falls in love with Sarah (Tate), the daughter of an inn keeper. Sarah, however, has recently caught the eye of Count von Krolock (Ferdy mayne), who lives in a nearby village. Sharon Tate would star the same year in Mark Robson's "Valley of the Dolls," just two years before her violent death at the hands of the Manson Family in 1969. Shot on location in Italy. Director Polanski originally wanted to shoot the film in Poland, as a "fairytale comedy about vampires and [that] there would be lots of snow," but due to financial reasons had the production moved to Italy. Ocean blue studio wrappers, with die-cut window in the British style. Title page present, with credits for screenwriters Polanski and Brach. 105 leaves on eye-rest green stock, mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus, internally bound with two silver brads. Cronin (ed.), "Roman Polanski: Interviews," pp. 13-16. Flynn, "Cinematic Vampires," pp. 142-144.

PEDRO PARAMO - ORIGINAL MEXICAN FILM POSTER

Mexico, 1967. An original Mexican one sheet movie poster for the 1967 Carlos Velo film adaptation of Juan Rulfo's novel, starring John Gavin and Ignacio Lopez Tarso. Most Mexican movie posters were cheaply manufactured and printed on newsprint, which is brittle to begin with and doesn't age well. This is a Near Fine example, folded, 27 x 37 inches. Two small holes on the upper sides of the frame, not affecting the terrific artwork. An unaccountably rare Latin American film poster; the only other example we've seen is a Cuban silk-screened poster for this film produced later in 1972. Though Stanford University has a fairly comprehensive collection of Mexican film posters, we did not find a copy of this one in their holdings.
