Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1967. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. Frank Kellogg With appreciation for your great support Martin Luther King Jr." Fine in a fine dust jacket. Where Do We Go from Here is Dr. King's analysis of the state of American race relations and the movement after a decade of U.S. civil rights struggles. ''With Selma and the Voting Rights Act one phase of development in the civil rights revolution came to an end,'' he observed (King, 3). King believed that the next phase in the movement would bring its own challenges, as African Americans continued to make demands for better jobs, higher wages, decent housing, an education equal to that of whites, and a guarantee that the rights won in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would be enforced by the federal government.

British Museum General Catalogue of Printed Books to 1955. Compact Edition. Bände 1 bis 27 und Supplemente für 1955-1965 in fünf Bänden, zusammen 32 Bände (so vollständig).

Readex Microprint Corp, New York 1967 - 1967. OLwd. 74000 Gramm. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Cien Años de Soledad (One Hundred Years of Solitude).

Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamericana, 1967. First edition of the author's masterpiece. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Inscribed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the dedication page. In very good condition with some of the usual creasing to the spine and some rubbing to the front and rear panels. Housed in a custom half morocco case. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31). At the conclusion of the 1970's this book was voted by the editors of The New York Times Book Review to be not only the best book published in the last ten years but the book most likely to still be read one hundred years from then.

        The Mexican Portfolio

[New York]: Da Capo Press, [1967]. Second Edition, Limited to 1000 numbered copies, signed by Strand. A seminal work by a legendary figure in 20th century American photography. Based on photographs taken by the author on his travels through Mexico in 1932-33, the striking photogravures depict architecture, landscape, the indigenous people, and religious folk sculpture. Strand's work first made its appearance as Photographs of Mexico in a limited edition of 250 copies in 1940, with the printing of the steel-faced gravure plates by master platemaker Otto Wackernagel being supervised by Strand himself and executed by Charles Furth and the Photogravure and Color Company. This second edition utilized the original Wackernagel plates but they were now printed by Albert Delong at the Andersen Lamb Company of Brooklyn. Strand was even more pleased with this version, remarking:  ?"[they] have been able to get even more out of these twenty beautiful plates in printing the second edition...this work, I think, is superlative...Delong...has made these plates sing.?" "The images…are a celebration of the subjects?' pride, dignity, and endurance, and are a clear testament to Strand?'s belief that the photogravure process is capable of yielding the finest results achievable in photographic printmaking." (The Aperture Foundation, 2012). folio. [pp. 7]. 20 photogravure plates with tissue guards. plates & text loose as issued in original paper wr., cloth & board chemise, & paper slipcase. A fine copy

After violent riots in Newark and Detroit, just a week before his acclaimed "Where Do We Go from Here?" address to the SCLC Convention, Dr. King writes a Board member that "In view of the riots and the overall crisis that our nation faces, SCLC is going to have to assert itself even more ? they need to return to their deprived communities and carry on the fight for human dignity ??

Atlanta, Georgia, August 7, 1967. 8.5" x 11". "Typed Letter Signed ""Martin,"" 1 page, 8.5"" x 11"". Atlanta, August 7, 1967. To Mrs. Marian Bruce Logan. On Southern Christian Leadership Conference stationery listing Martin Luther King, Jr. as President. Mrs. Logan wrote several pencil and ink notations in blank areas around the text. Fine condition. In full, ""Our Board Meeting is approaching and we contemplate a very challenging and urgent session. Your in depth thinking is certainly needed on the total agenda especially the crisis that we face in our cities. In view of the riots and the overall crisis that our nation faces, SCLC is going to have to assert itself even more and accelerate present programs to new dimensions. In order to implement this, your moral and financial support is greatly needed.Instead of the customary Board Member contribution of $50.00, I hope that you will find it possible to make your contribution $100.00 and above. This would greatly relieve the excessive budget of our Convention this year. Of the 1500 delegates that we expect, at least 500 will be coming to the Convention from Black Belt areas of the deep South and we are having to assume the expense of the majority of them. We feel, however, that it is necessary to encourage them to participate in the Convention in order to provide them with the information and inspiration they need to return to their deprived communities and carry on the fight for human dignity.?The SCLC's Annual Convention was held in Atlanta August 14-17, 1967. In his August 16th address, Dr. King said, in part,""Where do we go from here? First, we must massively assert our dignity and worth. We must stand up amid a system that still oppresses us and develop an unassailable and majestic sense of values. We must no longer be ashamed of being black. The job of arousing manhood within a people that have been taught for so many centuries that they are nobody is not easy ... The futility of violence in the struggle for racial justice has been tragically etched in all the recent Negro riots. Now, yesterday, I tried to analyze the riots and deal with the causes for them. Today I want to give the other side. There is something painfully sad about a riot. One sees screaming youngsters and angry adults fighting hopelessly and aimlessly against impossible odds. And deep down within them, you perceive a desire for self-destruction, a kind of suicidal longing.""Occasionally, Negroes contend that the 1965 Watts riot and the other riots in various cities represented effective civil rights action. But those who express this view always end up with stumbling words when asked what concrete gains have been won as a result. At best, the riots have produced a little additional anti-poverty money allotted by frightened government officials and a few water sprinklers to cool the children of the ghettos. It is something like improving the food in the prison while the people remain securely incarcerated behind bars. Nowhere have the riots won any concrete improvement such as have the organized protest demonstrations ..."""

ALLOCUTIO PRO PACE. [with] (FACSIMILE - BODONI IMPRINT). ORATIO DOMINICA IN CLV LINGUAS

Parma: Franco Maria Ricci, 1967. ONE OF 700 COPIES n. Hardcover. 438 x 292 mm (17 1/4 x 11 1/2"). Two volumes. Preface and introduction by U Thant. ONE OF 700 COPIES. Publisher's excellent red straight-grain morocco, covers with gilt frame and central coat of arms, raised bands flanked by decorative gilt rules, panels with gilt lettering or central fleuron. In original morocco-lipped marbled paper slipcase. In mint condition. Produced in conjunction with the Museo Bodoni, these volumes commemorate the 1965 visit by Pope Paul VI to the United Nations. "Allocutio Pro Pace" ["Address for Peace"] presents the Pope's speech (in French) to the United Nations General Assembly, with a preface and introduction in English by UN Secretary General U Thant. The companion volume is a facsimile of a work produced in 1806 by the great Italian printer Giambattista Bodoni in honor of the visit of Pope Pius VII to the coronation of Napoleon in Paris. In this second work, we see Bodoni's printing of the Lord's Prayer in 155 languages from Asia, Europe, Africa, and the Americas, including many using non-Roman alphabets. It was a tour de force in typography requiring the design of Illyric, Ethiopian, Russian, Arabic, Hebrew, and Greek types (among others), and manifesting Bodoni's unequalled virtuosity. Apart from their content, the thick paper, beautiful typefaces, and fine bindings make this a most appealing set.

        Andy Warhol's Index (Book)

New York: Random House. FIRST EDITION, preferred hardcover issue, of Warhol's iconic Index (Book), complete with all components. Hardcover. Very Good. FIRST EDITION, preferred hardcover issue, of Warhol's iconic Index (Book), complete with all components. "Andy Warhol's Index (Book), which is an expensive rarity today, was another portrait of the mysterious silver factory as a schizoid fun house. It consists primarily of photographs, blank pages, joke pages, and a pop-up cut-out of a medieval castle inhabited by Warhol's superstars above the logo 'We are constantly under attach.' The text is a rambling, seemingly random, classically monosyllabic interview with Warhol. Although it stands today as an essential report on the Warhol factory, the Index book operates on a different level entirely inasmuch as it does not rely primarily on language" (Bockris, Warhol: The Biography). Complete with pop-up castle; a paper accordion (still with squeak!); a multi-colored pop-up airplane; a folded geodesic dome (detached from string, as often), a paper disc with "The Chelsea Girls" in printed type; 45 R.P.M. flexi-disc with portrait of Lou Reed, which plays a supposedly unrecorded song by Nico and the Velvet Underground; an illustration of a nose with two colored overlays on a double-folded page; pop-up Hunt's Tomato Paste can; a sheet of eight stamps to be placed in water; and a gold balloon not quite melted as usual, but worn and fused between the two pages. New York: Random House, 1967. Octavo, original black cloth with holographic front board. Binding extremely bright and clean. An outstanding copy of a notoriously fragile book.

        A Biblia. [The Bible.]

Szépirodalmi Könyvkiadó, Budapest 1967 - First edition. With the original, illustrated dust jacket. In original black leatherette. Gilt title on spine. 201, (3) p. First edition of Nádas' first book. Contains two short stories: "A Biblia" (The Bible) and "A pince" (The Cellar). Péter Nádas (b. 1942) is Hungary's major contemporary writer, novelist, dramatist, essayist. His works are compared to Marcel Proust, Thomas Mann, and to Thomas Bernhard by Susan Sontag. With two short novels in "A Biblia" Nádas recalls his childhood experiences. Many of the main motifs of Nádas' later works, that are represented the best in his masterpiece the "Emlékiratok könyve" in 1986 (in English: Book of Memories, 1997.), could be traced already in these early short stories: the garden, the dog, the "girl next door", the communist parents who work in the administration, childhood sexuality and the concept of untruth. WorldCat locates only two copies in institutional holding in the US. In original black leatherette. Gilt title on spine First edition. With the original, illustrated dust jacket.

Insgesamt recht gutes Exemplar!

Partial, rough erasure to previous owners ink stamp at half-title, else Fine in a Near Fine dustjacket, unclipped, with some trivial rubbing to corners. Thompson's first book, chronicling his year riding with the Hell's Angels Motorcycle Club and other motorcycle gangs, an "experiment" that ended when he was beaten nearly to death by a group of Angels.         1967 IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT ORIGINAL CONTINUITY / SCREENPLAY with ACADEMY AWARDS RELATED SIGNED LETTER by Director NORMAN JEWISON

Hollywood, Califoarnia: Mirisch Corporation, United Artists, 1967. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Good. ORIGINAL COMBINED CONTINUITY SCRIPT / SCREENPLAY of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, the 1967 FILM Directed by NORMAN JEWISON and Starring ROD STEIGER and SIDNEY POITIER. This Combined Continuity (each scene is described in full detail "combining" camera shots, camera angles, dialogue, actions, etc.) is dated June 12th, 1967. At the end of the last page is the statement: "Continuity taken from work picture (a working print) & mag track (magnetic sound track) by Laura Rosser's Film Continuity Service, P.O. Box 1603, Hollywood 28, California, Phone: NO 1-16115". The film was produced by The Mirisch Corporation and Released by United Artists on August 2, 1967. Continuities (Continuity Scripts) were an important part of the film industry. Typically created after a film was "in the can", but before it was released, a continuity created a written "copy" of a film. A good "Continuity", especially a "Combined Continuity", provided a comprehensive transcription of the finished film. Continuities were created both for copyright protection and for a "record" of a film. Many early films easily degenerated, and many others were wiped out to recover their silver. A true continuity script was therefore often the only archived, word-by-word, shot-by-shot, scene-by-scene, record of many films. Mimeographed sheets, yellow front cover, 8.5x14", mimeographed on one side only, 98 pages plus the cover page. Two hole punched at the top and bound by a metal bracket. Laid in a legal size manila folder. The metal bracket has rusted somewhat and has left its rust imprint onto both the front and rear covers of the manila folder. The manila folder has a typed title on its tab: "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT". This script was clearly filed away, perhaps in a legal department, perhaps in the Studio's files. LAID-IN the manila folder, on top of the Continuity / Screenplay, is a TYPED SIGNED LETTER by NORMAN JEWISON. The letter is on NORMAN JEWISON'S PERSONAL STATIONERY. The letter is addressed to PHILLIP LAMBRO, a Composer of Film Scores. The letter is dated APRIL 24, 1968, only 14 days after the April 10, 1968, 40th ACADEMY AWARDS that presented Oscars to films released in 1967. IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT won MULTIPLE OSCARS at the 40th Academy Awards, including BEST PICTURE (and, perhaps of interest to Phillip Lambro, BEST SOUND). Norman Jewison's letter to Phillip Lambro clearly refers to the film's success at the Academy Awards. The letter reads: "Dear Phillip: / Thank you for your thoughtful letter. It was muchly appreciated. / It was a very exciting and rewarding night for our picture, and I thank you again for caring. / Yours, / Norman (signed)". (Phillip Lambro is a composer who had a short career as a composer of film scores. Lambro wrote the original score to Polanski's film Chinatown, which, before the film was released, was replaced by a score by Jerry Goldsmith.) Condition: The cover / title page is mostly torn away from the metal bracket at the top, and is worn along its edges with small closed tears; the last few pages are worn along their bottom edge; otherwise a bright, clean copy that clearly has been safely filed away. The laid-in TLS letter has folds from where it was probably folded to fit into an envelope (envelope is not present), and has some general creases from handling, but remains sturdy, bright and clear. One of the 20th Centuries Great Films, with an Associated Letter from the Film's Director. Scarce. About the 40th Academy Awards (from Wikipedia): ******The 40th Academy Awards honored film achievements of 1967. Originally scheduled for April 8, 1968, the awards were postponed for two days until April 10, 1968, because of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The big winner was Norman Jewison's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT with FIVE OSCARS for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound).******

Human heart Transplantation / Hartoorplanting in de mens: "South African Medical Journal, Vol. 41: no. 48, 30 December 1967. [Containing, among other writings: A Human Cardiac Transplant: An Interim Report of a Successful Operation Performed at Groote Schuur Hospital, Cape Town].

(Cape Town, 1967). 4to. The entire issue, in the original green/white and illustrated wrappers, bound in very nice full burgundy cloth with gilt lettering to front board. A bit of brownspotting to a couple of leaves, due to the paper quality, but overall an excellent, clean and bright copy of this richly illustreted issue, which is devoted entirely to the groundbreaking medical performance that was Barnard's human heart transplant. LX pp. + pp. 1257-1278 (the pagination includes the wrappers).. First printing in this scarce issue, in which Barnard's milestone paper of modern medicine appeared, describing for the first time one of the most important medical performances in the course of history - "the most publicised event in world medical history", namely the first human heart transplant. This medical breakthrough introduced to the world a way to prolong life that would become of seminal importance to modern man.The entire issue of the "South African Medical Journal" is devoted to Barnard's astonishing performance (done only three weeks prior to the publication) and is very interesting in itself, constituting a magnificent historical document. Apart from the first appearance of Barnard's paper, it also contains tributes to Barnard and his team by other leading physicians, ethical discussions about tranplantations, a description of the honourary degree bestowed upon Barnard due to the operation, discussions about donors for heart transplantations, papers on legal requirements, pre-operative assessment, tissue typing tests anestesia, and, of course, the great operation itself. To that also comes the highly interesting "Provisional Report on the Autopsy of L.W. (the patient, Louis Washkansky) as well as numerous advertisements and several heartfelt congratulations to Barnard (and his team) upon the operation (e.g. a half-page "add" saying "UPJOHN and their S. African Subsidiary/ TUCO (PTY LTD./ heartily congratulate/ all concerned/ in the historic/ HEART TRANSPLANTATION/ carried out at Groote Schuur Hospital" and many others like it), reflecting the astonishing effect that this historic event immidiately had upon contemporary society. "Christiaan (Chris) Barnard was born in 1922 and qualified in medicine at the University of Cape Town in 1946. Following surgical training in South Africa and the USA, Barnard established a successful open-heart surgery programme at Groote Schuur Hospital and the University of Cape Town in 1958. In 1967, he led the team that performed the world's first human-to-human heart transplant. The article describing this remarkable achievement was published in the South African Medical Journal just three weeks after the event and is one of the most cited articles in the cardiovascular field. In the lay media as well, this first transplant remains the most publicised event in world medical history. Although the first heart transplant patient survived only 18 days, four of Groote Schuur Hospital's first 10 patients survived for more than one year, two living for 13 and 23 years, respectively. This relative success amid many failures worldwide did much to generate guarded optimism that heart transplantation would eventually become a viable therapeutic option. This first heart transplant and subsequent ongoing research in cardiac transplantation at the University of Cape Town and in a few other dedicated centres over the subsequent 15 years laid the foundation for heart transplantation to become a well-established form of therapy for end-stage cardiac disease. During this period from 1968 to 1983, Chris Barnard and his team continued to make major contributions to organ transplantation, notably the development of the heterotopic ( 'piggy-back') heart transplants; advancing the concept of brain death, organ donation and other related ethical issues; better preservation and protection of the donor heart (including hypothermic perfusion storage of the heart; studies on the haemodynamic and metabolic effects of brain death; and even early attempts at xenotransplantation."         Autograph letter signed.

Pacific Palisades, 14. II. 1967. - Large 4to. 2 pp. To a photographer named Bishop: "Got your letter and samples of photo experiments. You must not think because I used 'glum + sombre' that I was disparaging your work. It's simply that I can't stand the 'sad gorilla' aspect of myself which I often see in photos. Of the hundreds of photos people have taken from me there are only about a half-dozen I really like (when you come again I'll show you my favourite one). In general photography leaves me cold. I never used a camera in my life. Nor will I in the future. Now and then in magazines I find photos I like - could be in a good or cheap magazine. These experimental ones you just sent - I must confess they too leave me cold. Too slick for my taste. Too commercial. But I'm prejudiced - so don't take it hard. I hung out with advertising men, salesmen and artists both, when in my twenties - and became thoroly [!] disgusted with everything which they found exciting [.]". - On stationery with printed letterhead.
