DIALOGUE. Journal des Livres et des Idées, No. 3.

Lausanne September 1967 - single folded sheet, portraits of Pound by Gaudier-Brzeska and Jean Cocteau, pp. [4], folio, original self wrappers printed on all sides, light overall toning, quarter-folded with horizontal points starting, from the library of actor Douglas Fairbanks Jr. with his loose bookplate in separate envelope, very good condition. Inscribed warmly to Pound by Piero Sanavio, an Italian who wrote on Pound and translated him into French: 'To Ezra for a happy new year. Piero Sanavio'. Pound himself has signed his name, followed by two exclamation marks, at the side of Gaudier-Brzeska's portrait of him on the front. The entire issue is dedicated to Pound, with Sanavio contributing as lead article the case for Pound winning the Nobel Prize - further tributes come from George Seferis, Eugenio Montale, Hemingway, Wyndham Lewis, Eliot, Edith Sitwell, as well as Pound himself (a translation of Canto LXXIX by Denis Roche). A scarce item, not recorded in Gallup's bibliography of Pound, although he does record Eliot's contribution - 'Sur Ezra Pound', a French translation taken from his Literary Essays - in his bibliography of the latter as D163b.

        Calling Life's Signals + 42 player & coach signatures 1968 Shriner East West Game + 1968 Street & Smith's Official Yearbook

Michigan: Zondervan. NF/VG. 1967. 1st Edition. Hardcover; 1st Printing. The first part of this 3-part package is 2 sheets of 3-ring binder type lined paper found in the back of the below Sloan book contains 42 signatures of coaches and football players from the 1968 Shriner East West Football game. I've done nothing with the sheets as far as framing; they are currently just protected in an acid-free plastic bag. The sheets are in very good condition, with some aging and 'limpness' to the paper, one tear through one of the 3-ring binder holes, and non-instrusive to the signatures fold lines (one each horizontal and vertical), from where they had been folded and placed in Mr. Sloan's book. My football-fanatic brother and various football fan friends (some of whom I owe a great deal to as they're very familiar with many of the signatures on these sheets and could also give me some background on the players and coaches) have identified all but one of these signatures (a prize to any of you who can identify the one unknown!). They are, for the Western team: (Eugene) Mercury Morris, Al Brenner, Jim Seizemore, Charles H. Rosenfelder, Gene Huey, Roger Wehrli, Bill Earthquake Enyart, Edd Hargett, Terry Brown, Paul Gipson, Jon Kolb, Bill Bradley, John Zook, Jim Anderson, Mike Montler, Al Worley, James Mitchell, Pepper Rodgers, Keith Christensen, Jack O'Malley, Mike Schwier, Joe Paterno (coach, then at Penn State), Malcolm Soveron, Bobby Douglass, Jon Sandstrom and Jerry LeVias. For The Eastern team, they are: C. Rip Engle, Coach Paul Dietzel (then at So. Carolina), Ben Johnson, John Shiners, Charlie Jarvis, Dave Bradley, Bobby Campbell, Vince Dooley (coach, then at Georgia), Coach Jim Root (then at NH), Marti Stewart, Pay Dyer, Dave Foley, Gene Ferguson, Mike Hall, and Jack Rudnay. Plus the unknown is on one of the Eastern sheets: Julian (could I suppose be John, though it has that dotted 'i') Nurcenalson (or Rurcenalson, or something similar; I was unable to find such a name in the 1968 College Football Magazine that is another part of this package). Of course huge scans on request, so you can see the signatures. The second part of this package is an excellent condition Street and Smith's Official Yearbook College Football 1968 magazine (lots about O. J. Simpson in it). The magazine is bright and crisp without any handwriting in it. The spine is uncreased, but very slightly slanted forward. There is one short closed tear upper back binding, the upper back binding corner tip has a small fold crease, and there's just a bit of browning to the white background along the upper and spine edges. Tons of information about that year's college teams and coaches, and the players who have signed the above sheets. The last part of this package consists of a 1st edition/1st printing book by Steve Sloan titled Calling Life's Signals published by Zondervan Publishing House in 1967, containing an Introduction by Paul W. (Bear) Bryant. The book is signed and inscribed "To Marc, Best Regards, Steve Sloan (Phil.1:21)" on the front end page (I believe this may be inscribed to Marc Lyons, another football player). The book is straight, clean and tight with no other handwriting in it, with slight edgewear from shelving. The price intact dustjacket is clean, crisp and bright with some fading to the spine and some small edge chips and tears. Steve Sloan is himself a continuing part of college football history (as are several others who signed the sheets). Mr. Sloan was inducted into the Tennessee Sports Hall of Fame in 2000. Steve Sloan's biography, from an internet page about him: In both 1960 and 1961, Steve Sloan was selected to the All-State football and basketball teams. In 1961, he signed with the University of Alabama, where he enjoyed an outstanding career earning All-American honors in 1965 and guided his team to a national title. That same year, he earned Southeastern Conference MVP honors and was an Academic All-American. His first head coaching position was with Vanderbilt University (1973-74), earning him SEC Coach of the Year honors his second year. He then became head coach of Texas Tech University (1974-77), and was named Southwest Conference Coach of the Year in 1976. He later had head coaching stints at the University of Mississippi and Duke University. Sloan served as athletic director at the University of Alabama from 1987-89, and served in that capacity at the University of Central Florida in Orlando and finally at UT-Chattanoo ga before retiring from football in 2006. A fine package of late 1960s football history and a unique grouping of football player and coach signatures.; Signed by Author .

Fuck the System [Abbie Hoffman's First Published Work]

New York: Privately Printed, 1967. First edition. Wrappers. Very Good. A Very Good copy of the first edition, first printing, of Abbie Hoffman's first published work, in the Publisher's original illustrated stapled wrappers measuring approximately 6 inches x 3 1/2 inches and published by Hoffman pseudonymously as George Metesky, a convicted bomber (better known as the "Mad Bomber") who, for a period of 16 years -- during the 1940s and 50s -- terrorized New York with home-made explosives planted by him in public venues such as theaters, terminals, libraries, offices, phone booths, and storage lockers, and in the restrooms of Grand Central Terminal, Pennsylvania Station, Radio City Music Hall, the New York Public Library, the New York City Subway. While showing some wear, the booklet remains in surprisingly good condition for such an uncommon ephemeral item. The wrappers show some creasing at the corners and minor loss to the rear wrapper's upper left corner (with a further incipient chip secured by a tiny piece of archival binder's tape applied to the wrapper's verso). The spine shows a split at the bottom third and a small split to the top, and a prior owner has written her name and address to the inside of the front wrapper. The pages are surprisingly clean and without tears or stains. Over the course of 30 pages, Hoffman offers the reader information on how to use the "system" to one's own benefit and obtain items such as alcohol, food, flowers, and pets at little to no cost, with the front wrapper bearing the text "Take what you want / Take what you need / There is plenty to go around / Everything is free. // George Metesky". Copies of this piece of Yippie ephemera are quite scarce, and are especially so when in a condition as nice as is this copy. QUITE SCARCE INDEED.

The writer of "The Postman Always Rings Twice" and "Double Indemnity" recalls books he read when he was young, especially "Alice in Wonderland" - "a little girl who followed a white rabbit down his hole ? those pitfalls for every writer ? Whenever I feel an impulse to be important, I remind myself of Alice, and get rid of that impulse, quick?"

Hyattsville, Maryland, Aug 11 & Nov 22, 1967. 8.5" x 11". "Comprises:(1) Typed Letter Signed ""James M. Cain,"" 2p, 8.5"" x 11"", separate sheets. Hyattsville, Maryland, August 14, 1967. To Miss Evelyn P. Byrne, The Bronx, N.Y. With original envelope. Fine condition. In part, ""When I was young I read endlessly, particularly novels, and some of those I enjoyed were THE THREE MUSKETEERS, TWENTY YEARS AFTER, THE COUNT OF MONTE CRISTO, THE LAST OF THE MOHICANS, THE DEESLAYER [sic], THE VIRGINIANS, VANITY FAIR, TREASURE ISLAND, and THE JUNGLE BOOK. At the age of twelve, I wanted to read THE BLACK TULIP, but when I got it out of the college library (my father was a college president), it was in French, and I taught myself French to read it. But of all the books from those years, the one I remember best, and the one that has remained with me, to be part of my life and be reread at least once a year since, is ALICE IN WONDERLAND, with of course it's back-to-back companion-piece, THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS...""I try to remind myself it is about a little girl who followed a white rabbit down his hole -- about as unpretentious an idea as could well be imagined. It is, so far as I see now, devoid of any big significance, any lesson to be imparted, any wisdom -- those pitfalls for every writer, especially elderly writers, like me. Whenever I feel an impulse to be important, I remind myself of Alice, and get rid of that impulse, quick. My last book, one I finished last week, was about a little girl who by a sufficiently credible account was given a tiger to raise, a baby tiger no bigger than a squirrel -- but he grew. He didn't eat her, but I think a fairly amusing tale grew out of it...""On November 15, 1967, Miss Byrne sent a typescript of Cain's August 14th letter to him (present), asking for ""permission to reprint your gracious letter in book form..."" An unsigned carbon of Byrne's November 15th letter is also present. Cain's reply:(2) Typed Letter Signed ""James M. Cain,"" 1p, 8.5"" x 11"". Hyattsville, Maryland, November 22, 1967. To Miss Evelyn P. Byrne, New York, N.Y. With original envelope. Fine condition. In part, ""Including me in your anthology is fine, but I make one small cut on your Xerox -- an illusion to a story about a tiger I had in works when I wrote you. I have had to shelve it in favir of something more pressing..."" Cain has crossed out the last 53 words beginning with ""My last book, one I finished a short time ago...""From 1966 to 1970, Evelyn Byrne ran a program at New York City's Elizabeth Barrett Browning Junior High School where she asked major literary and artistic figures of the time to write back with their recollections of what books inspired them while they were teenagers. An assortment of their responses were published in the book Attacks of Taste, printed in 1971 by Gotham Book Mart. "

        The Mexican Portfolio.

[New York]: Da Capo Press, [1967]. - folio. [pp. 7]. 20 photogravure plates with tissue guards. plates & text loose as issued in original paper wr., cloth & board chemise, & paper slipcase. A fine copy. Second Edition, Limited to 1000 numbered copies, signed by Strand. A seminal work by a legendary figure in 20th century American photography. Based on photographs taken by the author on his travels through Mexico in 1932-33, the striking photogravures depict architecture, landscape, the indigenous people, and religious folk sculpture. Strand's work first made its appearance as Photographs of Mexico in a limited edition of 250 copies in 1940, with the printing of the steel-faced gravure plates by master platemaker Otto Wackernagel being supervised by Strand himself and executed by Charles Furth and the Photogravure and Color Company. This second edition utilized the original Wackernagel plates but they were now printed by Albert Delong at the Andersen Lamb Company of Brooklyn. Strand was even more pleased with this version, remarking: "[they] have been able to get even more out of these twenty beautiful plates in printing the second edition.this work, I think, is superlative.Delong.has made these plates sing." "The images are a celebration of the subjects’ pride, dignity, and endurance, and are a clear testament to Strand’s belief that the photogravure process is capable of yielding the finest results achievable in photographic printmaking."       Milano , LONGANESI, I Marmi 1967 - Fotografie di Ugo Mulas. Testo di Alan Solomon. Impaginazione di Michele Provinciali. 4to. pp. 342. . Perfetto (Mint). . Prima edizione (First edition). [Roth, 2004].

[San Francisco]. 1967. A collection of snapshots taken at the New Year's Wail concert on January 1, 1967 at the Panhandle near Golden Gate Park in San Francisco, with some accompanying images. Various sizes. Condition is overall good with tape remnants or shadows mostly in the margins, but the images mostly pretty clear. Several are captioned. The show, entitled "The New Year's Wail / New Year's Whale" was organized by the Hells Angels as a thank you, and a celebration of the Haight Ashbury community for "crowdfunding" the bail money for their member Chocolate George after a traffic arrest. The Diggers helped to promote the event which featured Big Brother and The Grateful Dead (as well as of Orkustra with Bobby Beausoleil, later of the Manson Family). The bands played on a flatbed truck, and the photographer was clearly very close to the bands, probably on the truck itself. Of the dozen candid photographs of the concert, all but one (the only color image, of some Hells Angels and their bikes in the crowd) feature the bands: Joplin appears in at least eight of them, and Jerry Garcia in three, with other shots of other band members in various combinations. Also accompanied by several other images: two color images of Joplin singing, date stamped in May 1967, have damage to the margins, although the images of Joplin are largely clear. Also with a color photo of a psychedelically-decorated hippie crash pad, as well as another 14 images of several young men, presumably the photographer and his friends: one with a motorcycle, several in military garb sitting on a dock smoking pot, one on a ship's deck, and several overseas in Thailand and the Phillipines. .

[Vinyl Record]: The Velvet Underground 7" Single: "White Light/White Heat" / "Here She Comes Now"

USA: MGM Records. 1967. Original 7" vinyl 45 RPM promotional record. Pale blue "Special Disc Jockey Record" Verve label. Produced by Tom Wilson. Very good plus with a single scratch on the A side in original green paper sleeve with record company stamps. The third and final single for the Velvet Underground, this version was specifically sent out to radio stations as a promo for their 1968 second album, White Light/White Heat and includes the "special disc jockey record" label. White Light/White Heat was created after The Velvet Underground had broken their ties with Andy Warhol and after Nico left to pursue a solo career. The album experimented with the aesthetic that was the precursor to punk, with the band pursuing a stark contrast to their earlier work. John Cale said of the record, "while the debut had some moments of fragility and beauty, White Light/White Heat was consciously anti-beauty." .

        LORD OF LIGHT

Doubleday & Company, Inc., Garden City, New York 1967 - Octavo, cloth. Hugo award winner 1968, Nebula nominee, 1967. ".his most sustained single tale, richly conceived and plotted, exhilarating throughout its considerable length. Some of the crew of a human colony ship, which has deposited its settlers on a livable world, have made use of advanced Technology (including Identity Transfer) to ensconce themselves in the role of gods, selecting their role models from the Hindu pantheon, including a fatally attractive She figure. But where Hinduism flourishes, the Buddha - in the shape of the protagonist Sam - must follow; and his liberation of the humans of the planet, who are mortal descendants of the original settlers, takes on aspects of both Prometheus and Coyote the Trickster. At points, Sam may seem just another of Zelazny's stable of slangy, raunchy, over-loved immortals; but the end effect of the book is liberating, wise, lucid." - Clute (ed.), SFE online. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-1310. Gerber, Utopian Fantasy (1973), p. 162. Survey of Science Fiction Literature III, pp. 1251-56. Arguably Jean-Pierre Melville's crowning achievement (though we feel there are no low points among his crime films), wherein Delon plays an icy hitman who is utterly anonymous, living alone in a single bedroom apartment with only a small bird in a birdcage for company. Things are fine, and then he meets a woman. 47 x 63 inches (119 x 160 cm).       Editions Subervie, . He was born in Zacatecas, Mexico to a Lebanese-Cuban father and a Mexican mother. Moving to Cuba at the age of six, Jamis trained at the San Alexandro Academy before gaining renown as an abstract painter. He was a member of the modernist group of Cuban painters known as "Las Once" ("The Eleven"). Jamís lived in Paris in the 1950s, and attended the Sorbonne. The surrealist writer Andre Breton was a supporter of his work, and he co-exhibited with the sculptor Agustin Cardenas. Jamis returned to Cuba in 1959 and became involved in a wide range of activities including teaching, painting, and writing. He served as cultural attache in the Cuban embassy in Mexico for over a decade. Jamis received the Casa de las Américas prize for his book Por Esta Libertad (For This Liberty). His paintings can be seen in collections in Cuba and abroad. He often used pseudonyms such as Fernando Moro, Onirio Estrada or the initials F.J.N. Jamis died in Havana in 1988. A bookshop is named after him in Calle Obispo in Havana Vieja. (Wikipedia) Jean Sénac (1926?-1973) was an Algerian author. Born of an unknown father in Béni Saf in the Oran region of Algeria, the "poet who signed with a sun", was murdered in Algiers on August 30, 1973. His murder remains unsolved. Besides his poems and writings, he was renowned for a long-running relationship and correspondences with Albert Camus. A portion of his papers are stored at the City Archives in Marseille, France. Jean Sénac was an Algerian francophone poet who remained strongly attached to his Algerian nationality despite the French exodus from Algeria in the aftermath of the war of liberation. His poems were largely songs of revolution, which he hoped would help create a world of beauty and brotherhood in an Algeria that was open to all cultures. His own struggles were strongly linked with his quest to better Algeria through poetry: a profound search for identity, both personal and cultural and his struggle to find acceptance in his homosexuality plagued him throughout his life; "This poor body also/ Wants its war of independence", he once wrote. Sénac was a great admirer of the work of such poets as Gérard de Nerval, Arthur Rimbaud, Antonin Artaud and Jean Genêt. Jean Sénac had a long-running friendship with French Algerian-born writer and Literary Nobel Prize laureate Albert Camus that lasted from 1947 to 1958. The contents of the letters remain mostly unknown, although Hamid Nacer-Khodja published a few and wrote about the history of the friendship in his essay Le Fils rebelle. many correspondences are of a literary nature, but some also discuss the independence movement in Algeria. In April 1958 he broke relations with Albert Camus on a sour note blaming him for not supporting the plight of an Algerian student named Taleb executed for his political activities against the French. He did not communicate further with Camus from that day on until Camus' death early 1960. (Wikipedia)
