        Prayer to the Mystery

[Boston: D. Sacilotto for Charles Lauriat's, 1967. Photogravure by Curtis, finely printed from the original plate, on wove paper watermarked "Tweedweave", by the master printmaker D. Sacilotto. A rare edition, not to be confused with later restrikes. A fine print, the beauty and quality of which rivals that of the original plates.(Small discreet collection stamp outside of plate mark on verso .) Very good condition apart from some mild rippling and light soiling in the top margin. A breath-taking image from "The North American Indian", the grandest illustrated work ever produced in the United States, the most important illustrated work on American Indians, and the single greatest book in Western Americana. As in the culture other Plains Indians, spirituality and religious ceremony were a central part of Lakota life. In addition to the important annual Sun Dance, the principal sacred rites included the Vision Quest, Making Relatives, Rite of Purification (Sweat Lodge), Keeping of the Soul, Preparing for Womanhood, and Throwing the Ball. The sacred pipe was an integral part these rites, which all centered around the veneration and invocation of the Great Mystery, Wakan Tanka, the ubiquitous supreme deity that created and governed the universe. The buffalo skull was also a fundamental element of many of these ceremonies. As the prime source of subsistence, buffalo were deemed sacred, and their skulls were frequently used as altars. "In supplication the pipe was always offered to the Mystery by holding it aloft. At the feet of the worshipper lies a buffalo-skull, symbolic of the spirit of the animal upon which the Indians were so dependent. The subject of the picture is Picket Pin, an Ogalala Sioux." (Curtis, List of Large Plates Supplementing Volume Three) Picket Pin was a frequent fixture of the Rosebud Indian Reservation in South Dakota, and several photographs of him were included in Henry and Jean Hamilton's 1971 publication 'The Sioux Of the Rosebud' as well as Paul Dyck's 'Brule, Sioux People of the Rosebud' of the same year. A band of the Lakota or Teton Sioux tribe, the Oglala inhabited the North American Plains and Prairies west of the Missouri River, and were primarily hunters. The original edition of Curtis' The North American Indian had 214 subscribers and Curtis himself handled the distribution. After Curtis declared bankruptcy, the booksellers Charles Lauriat's of Boston purchased the outstanding stock, and the edition from which this print comes was commissioned in order to complete a number of incomplete portfolios. According to information supplied by the printers, the edition was strictly limited with only 17 sets being produced. Edward Curtis was fascinated with the story of the American Indian from an early age, honing both his knowledge of them and his skill as a photographer on numerous scientific expeditions in the 1890s. With the enthusiastic backing of President Theodore Roosevelt (who wrote the foreword), Curtis evolved his plan for a comprehensive work that would illustrate his romantic vision of American Indian life before the disastrous impact of European contact. He obtained the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan, whose support (and later, that of his son) enabled the project to go forward. What had originally been projected to take five or six years stretched to twenty-three, consumed $1,200,000 (a third in subsidy from the Morgans), and finally reached a conclusion in 1930, leaving Curtis a broken and bankrupt man. Nonetheless, he succeeded in accomplishing his grand design, and the set remains his monument. Cf. Naef & Goldschmidt The Truthful Lens 40; cf. Howes C-965.

A BRIEF CORRESPONDENCE AMONG THE PROFESSIONAL ICE SKATER "CHARLOTTE", INVENTOR OF THE DEATH SPIRAL AND OLYMPIC CHAMPION DICK BUTTON, AND DR. ARTHUR N. FOXE. The collection includes several signed autograph and typed letters and related ephemera including the original program for the 1917 movie "The Frozen Warning".

Germany, October 1967 through June 1968. [1967]. [1967] - - A brief correspondence begun on October 1, 1967 among "Charlotte", Dick Button and Dr. Arthur N. Foxe. The material includes 3 autograph letters signed by Charlotte. Also included are 2 autograph notes signed by Charlotte on the versos of real-photo portrait postcards, and 5 Typed Letters Signed by the Olympic champion figure skater and television broadcaster Dick Button, together with related material. In a 91-word Typed Letter on "Candid Productions" stationery, dated September 6, 1967, Dick Button introduces himself to Dr. Foxe and mentions having dropped in at the Tuttle Publishing Company in Rutland, Vermont where he purchased a copy of Dr. Foxe's book "Skating for Eveyone". While there, he was told about Dr. Foxe's collection of skating books. "I think it might be interesting for us to meet." Signed "Dick". In a subsequent letter typed on September 21, 1967, Dick Button thanks Dr. Foxe for the book, "I enjoyed talking with you." In a retained copy of a letter, Dr. Foxe recalls that Dick Button showed him 4 books he did not know about and asks if Dick could jot down their titles for him. Dick Button replies on October 30th with a letter in which he mentions enclosing a comprehensive bibliography which includes the books he showed him. In a 160-word letter dated October 1, 1967 penned in red ink on a 7-1/2 inch high by 11-1/2 inch wide light blue air letter, Charlotte replies to a letter from Dick Button, thanking him for thinking of her and her husband, her former skating partner, Kurt Neuman. "We both have not been well . had a little collapse and I a bit of a breakdown." Though she is now 77 years old she states that "I am still skating". Signed "Charlotte", together with an annotation in blue ink "and your 'old' Friend," signed "Kurt". Charlotte's red stamp depicting a line drawing of a figure skater is stamped at the top of the page. On November 9th, Dick Button writes to Dr. Foxe thanking him for his note about some "Harper's Weekly" prints and lets him know that he's not heard anything further from Charlotte beyond what she'd written in October. On November 15, 1967, Charlotte again writes in red ink on light blue paper. In her 150-word letter to Dick Button, Charlotte mentions putting some things together to send him: "I think you will pick out some of it that will interest you as I do not know what [?] your friend Dr. Arthur N. Foxe would like." Signed "Charlotte". Kurt Neuman has also signed the letter in blue ink, sending his regards to Dick & to Dr. Foxe. Dr. Foxe appears to have been researching the image which appears in a poster which Dick shown him. In a retained letter dated December 1st, Dr. Foxe informs Dick that his card file tells him that Wm. H. Fuller "was born c.1833 in Boston, Mass. He was a skater of considerable repute." He goes on to point out that there was another "Fuller" "an Englishman who flourished, as the saying goes around 1895" but that the "garb on the man of your poster is typical American." In a brief note typed on December 12, 1967, Dick asks Dr. Foxe "Is this what we talked about." signed "Dick Button" in blue ink. In a retained copy of a letter addressed to Charlotte, dated January 21, 1968, Dr. Foxe thanks Charlotte for the skating items she sent him. "I chose the program of The Frozen Warning", the Hippodrome Photograph and you doing the Split jump. It seems almost unbelievable that you performed so dynamically and in so modern a way before Sonja Henie." In an autograph letter signed, penned in red ink January 29, 1968, Charlotte responds to Dr. Foxe thanking him for his book. In this letter of approximately 180 words penned on light blue paper with her red skating stamp at top left, Charlotte writes about her accomplishments. "when I was a child in 1910 I already skated this new style and [at] 12 years I jumped already the Axel and Axel Paulsen himself saw me do it. In 1929 Mr. Neuman and I created the Death spiral." Signed "Charlotte". Charlotte has penned brief notes in red [Attributes: Signed Copy]

"Little Plume with his son Yellow Kidney occupies the position of honor, the space at the rear opposite the entrance. The picture is full of suggestion of the various Indian activities. In a prominent place lie the ever-present pipe and its accessories on the tobacco cutting-board. From the lodge- poles hang the buffalo-skin shield, the long medicine-bundle, an eagle- wing fan, and a deerskin articles for accoutering the horse. The upper end of the rope is attached to the intersection of the lodge-poles, and in stormy weather the lower end is made fast to a stake near the centre of the floor space." (Curtis, List of Large Plates Supplementing Volume Six) A subgroup of the Blackfoot tribe, the Piegan are of Algonquin stock and inhabited the Plains and Prairies region of North America. They were the quintessential Plains Indians, and in his notes, Curtis described them as amiable people, who had a propensity for social formalities and were easy to work with. The original edition of Curtis' The North American Indian had 214 subscribers and Curtis himself handled the distribution.         Atlas Shrugged (Signed, Limited Edition)

New York: Random House, 1967. First Edition. Fine/Fine. Stated 9th printing, the signed, limited 10-year anniversary edition of Atlas Shrugged. A Fine copy of the book in Fine publisher's acetate jacket and Fine original cardboard slipcase with only a tiny little smudge on the side where it looks like it rubbed against something. About as nice a copy as we've seen. Rand's magnum opus, where she develops her objectivist theory and explores the question, "what if society's genius goes on strike?" Rand considered the book "not about the murder of man's body, but about the murder and rebirth of man's spirit." "Atlas Shrugged" has remained one of the most popular and influential books written in the twentieth century; one survey in 1991 finding it second only to the Bible in having the greatest impact upon its readers. The book would also place first on Modern Library Reader's Poll of the Top 100 novels of the 20th century. "...the reader will stay with this strange world, borne along by its story and eloquent flow of ideas." (Contemporary Newsweek Review). Fine in Fine dust jacket.

        Ms. Brief mit eigenh. Unterschrift

Basel, 25. X. 1967. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Where Do We Go From Here: Chaos or Community?

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers, 1967. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Mr. James Nobel With Best Wishes For Peace and Brotherhood Martin Luther King Jr." The recipient James Nobel was the Director of the Council of Human Relations in Cleveland. Near fine in a near fine dust jacket. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Where Do We Go from Here is Dr. King's analysis of the state of American race relations and the movement after a decade of U.S. civil rights struggles. ''With Selma and the Voting Rights Act one phase of development in the civil rights revolution came to an end,'' he observed (King, 3). King believed that the next phase in the movement would bring its own challenges, as African Americans continued to make demands for better jobs, higher wages, decent housing, an education equal to that of whites, and a guarantee that the rights won in the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Voting Rights Act of 1965 would be enforced by the federal government.

Hitchcock/Truffaut (Inscribed to Robert F Blumofe by Francois Truffaut in 1984)

New York: Simon and Schuster, 1967. Second printing. INSCRIBED by Francois Truffaut to noted Hollywood producer Robert Blumofe on the half title page: "Pour Robert Blumofe / Bien cordialament / Francois Truffaut." The book was inscribed on the occasion of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences' "Tribute to Alfred Hitchcock" on December 5, 1984, a gala affair that included remarks by Gregory Peck, Peter Bogdanovich, and James Stewart. Truffaut would pass away later the same year. Laid in is the original 9 x 6 inch program for the event. The New York Times notes that Blumofe was "a notable catalyst for such films as "Around the World in 80 Days," "West Side Story," and "12 Angry Men." A very nice Truffaut association, in a book that we have never before seen inscribed by the director. "Hitchcock/Truffaut" remains the definitive study of Hitchcock's method, a transcription of a series of interviews held by Truffaut in 1966, covering in depth every film made by the Hitchcock up through "Torn Curtain." Near Fine in a Very Good plus, price-clipped dust jacket. Remainder mark on the bottom page edges, and minor wear at the spine ends.

In the Heat of the Night (Collection of five original title card maquettes)

Beverly Hills, CA: The Mirisch Corporation / United Artists, 1967. Collection of five original title card maquettes for the 1967 film hand lettered by Harold Adler. Based on the 1965 novel by John Ball. Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "In the Heat of the Night," his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "Justine" (1969), and "Finian's Rainbow" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City. A film as much, if not more so, about racial tensions in the Civil Rights era South as it is about a murder investigation, "In the Heat of the Night" won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Rod Steiger), and Best Adapted Screenplay. 22 x 13.25 inches. White lettering on black ink, tipped onto black board. Near Fine condition overall, with some light rubbing to the boards, some spotting, and minor fraying at the corners. Holograph numbering and editorial markings to the edges. Plastic tabs affixed tot he top of each card with tape. Collation available on request.

        PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK.

Melbourne:: F. W. Cheshire. (1967).. The true first edition, the Australian edition. SIGNED, "With affection / Joan Lindsay 1968." An historical novel about a group of female students at an Australian women's college in 1900 who inexplicably vanish at the site of an enormous rock formation while on a Valentine's Day picnic. The rock formation featured in the story, Hanging Rock, is an actual geological formation located in Victoria, Australia. The novel was adapted into a critically acclaimed film of the same name in 1975 by director Peter Weir. Ring on front cover, otherwise about very good light wear to corners and spine ends and an abrasion, an erasure of a name we assume, at the top of front endpaper (about 2 x .75"). The dust jacket is about a quarter-inch taller than the book but shows only the barest wear and is near fine. .

Hombre (Original screenplay for the 1967 film, June 1965 draft)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1967. Revised draft script for the 1967 film. One of the great Westerns, and one that epitomizes the revisionist trend sparked by Elmore Leonard's early novels of the 1950s and 1960s. Newman plays a white man who was raised by the Apaches, and has since had to straddle two worlds, feeling truly comfortable in neither. While riding a stagecoach, he is subject to the racial bias of banker Fredric March and March's snooty wife Barbara Rush. In truth, March is an embezzler, a fact that comes out when the coach is held up by murderous bandit-chief Richard Boone. When the passengers fight back, Boone takes Rush as a hostage. Newman proves himself the bravest of the passengers, systematically and intelligently outwitting the bandits one by one, invoking Leonard's brilliant "white flag" scenario from the novel in the process. Along with "The Tall T," one of two superb Westerns adapted from an Elmore Leonard source, and one of Paul Newman's finest performances. Yellow studio wrappers, with "Revised Screenplay," the film's title and the Fox logo stamped on the front wrapper, and dated June 29, 1965. Title and date also stamped along the spine. Project No. 76 stamped at the top left corner of the front wrapper. Title page present, dated June 29, 1965, noted as Revised Screenplay, with credits for screenwriters Ravetch and Frank. 134 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 131. Mimeograph on eye-rest green stock. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with lightly yapped edges, bound with three gold brads. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box. He had two basic reputations, writes Lewis: as a pioneer of modernism and as a major Jewish artist. He experienced modernism's "golden age" in Paris, where "he synthesized the art forms of Cubism, Symbolism, and Fauvism, and the influence of Fauvism gave rise to Surrealism". Yet throughout these phases of his style "he remained most emphatically a Jewish artist, whose work was one long dreamy reverie of life in his native village of Vitebsk."When Matisse dies," Pablo Picasso remarked in the 1950s, "Chagall will be the only painter left who understands what color really is

Rene Magritte Learns The Kids Dig His Work (ALS)

Brussels 1967 - One page ALS, in French, to his dealer, Alexandre Iolas. The painter takes a moment to compose a chatty note and in passing reveals he has been made aware the Pepsi generation likes his work. To wit: "My friend, I enclose this letter that I answered by saying it is up to you to organize a retrospective exhibition of my works and that you own necessary documents and data for such an undertaking. Not withstanding this question I received so many proposals that I would need a full staff to help me answer all the requests. But the letter of Dr. Schmidt does deserve, I believe, to be taken into consideration. I have learned through Mr and Mrs Majar whom met you last Saturday that my exhibition is not indifferent to many of the young people who visit it. This is less important but I would like to receive by registered post a number of the catalogs of the exhibition. I have friends here who are very hungry for this sort of book. Thank you so much in advance, if you see Nikky give her a kiss for me." Historically, correspondence and written material from the great painter has been difficult to procure, particularly when it reveals even the slightest degree of Magritte's awareness of his popular standing. A few pencil notations and light creases, otherwise in very good condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

LE DIT DU MALHEUR DE LA TERRE RUSSE

[Nice or Paris (?): The Artist, 1967].. Folio (37 x 27 cm). Loose bifolia laid into collage handmade paper wrapper. Some speckling inherent in the paper stock, but fine, laid between two wooden boards with a single remaining jute tie. First edition of this artist's book. Only the title, the introductory paragraph and the justification are letterpress (in French). The remainder of the text (in Cyrillic) was hand lettered in multi-colors by the artist, accompanied by 11 original woodcuts and linocuts in colors. One of 25 numbered copies, each with variations, executed on rustic Brut d'Annonay paper, and signed by the artist. The text is attributed to a solder in the 18th century army of Prince Alexandre Nevsky. Staritsky (1908 - 1981) was born in Poltava in the Ukraine, and after formal training in Russia from the early 1920s through 1931, emigrated first to Belgium, where she worked in the advertising department of L?'École de la Cambre in Brussels (1932?-46). She relocated to Nice in 1946 and died in Paris. She is considered one of the leading representatives of the second generation of Russian émigré abstract artists.

Typed letter signed (as "Plum") to Don Bensen.

Remsenburg, NY: 17 July,, 1967. Single typed sheet, octavo (199 × 149 mm), with Wodehouse's Remsenburg letterhead printed in blue. Two neat transverse creases from folding. Excellent condition. Wodehouse, in the latter years of his American exile, writes to "Don" at the Scott Meredith Literary Agency, in a wistful mood: "I was terribly sorry to hear from Scott that the two books had done so badly and of course I am all for cancelling the next two. I don't think it's either of our faults. It is just that the taste of the paperback public has completely changed … The world has become so serious now and they only want serious stuff". The recipient is almost certainly noted author and editor Donald Bensen, who began his career with Scott Meredith before pursuing a career in publishing and also writing a run of science-fiction novels. He is perhaps best remembered for editing a number of works of Wodehousiana, including P. G. Wodehouse: A Centenary Celebration 1881-1991 and A Wodehouse Bestiary. One of the books to have done "so badly" is probably The Purloined Paperweight (UK title: Company for Henry), which had been published by Simon & Schuster two months previously on 12th May; prior to that, his short-story collection Plum Pie had been published by Herbert Jenkins in September 1966, though there was no US edition until December the following year. These books were by no means his last, however: he would write some half a dozen more before his death in 1975, starting with Do Butlers Burgle Banks? (1968) and A Pelican at Blandings (1969, US edition 1970).

        Paris.

Paris: Flammarion,, 1967. Quarto. Original buff cloth, spine lettered in green. With the dust jacket. 408 half-tone photographs of Paris. A fine copy in the dust jacket with a few nicks and bottom edge of front panel with a small tear ineffectually tape-repaired on verso. First published in 1961; this copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "à Robert Kennedy Jr., en mémoire de son père et en souvenir d'amitié pour les Etats Unis, d'une petite fille française, Paris le 28 juin 1968"*, signed in a different hand "Isabelle Turpin de Grissé, 7 ans", and below the pencilled ownership inscription of "Shriver". Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated three weeks before, on 6th June; his son, Robert Kennedy Jr., was fourteen-years-old at the time. Shriver was the married name of Kennedy's sister Eunice, following her marriage to Sarjent in 1953. The Shrivers had five children, though Eunice would have presumably been the original owner in any case.

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1967. With the collaboration of Helen G. Scott. Quarto. Original grey cloth, titles to spine white, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to verso of front free endpaper, inkstamp and ownership signature to title page. Spine ends and tips lightly rubbed, board edges slightly faded. A very good copy in the ragged jacket with chipped and torn extremities and tape repairs to verso. First edition in English, first printing. This copy is inscribed by Truffaut on a card laid down to the front pastedown ("de la part de d'amitié"), and is from the library of Peter Bogdanovich, the American director, writer, and film historian, with his library stamp and signature to the title page. It is likely a gift to Bogdanovich from the author, as Truffaut consulted Bogdanovich's 1961 interview with Hitchcock in preparation for this book. It is based on an interview series with Alfred Hitchcock, conducted over a week at his offices at Universal Studios in 1962. The result of this journalistic enterprise "was one Truffaut's most enduring contributions to film culture". It was first published the preceding year under the title Le Cinèma selon Hitchcock.

It was printed on the lithographic presses of Mourlot Freres in Paris, engraved by Charles Sorlier. Chagall's early life left him with a "powerful visual memory and a pictorial intelligence". After living in France and experiencing the atmosphere of artistic freedom, his "vision soared and he created a new reality, one that drew on both his inner and outer worlds." But it was the images and memories of his early years in Belarus that would sustain his art for more than 70 years.Of circus people he said, "Why am I so touched by their make-up and grimaces? With them I can move forward toward new horizons. Chaplin seeks to do in film what I am trying to do in my paintings. He is perhaps the only artist today I could get along with without having to say a single word."

        De la grammatologie.

(Paris), Minuet, 1967. 8vo. Original wrappers. A bit of light wear to extremities, a few spots to back wrapper, and upper corner slightly bent, otherwise a nice and clean copy. 445, (3) pp.. First edition (20 Septembre, 1967, numéro 630) of Derrida's seminal main work, the foundational text for deconstructive criticism.1967 marks a turning point in the history of modern philosophy, constituting the birth of "Deconstruction". In this one year, Derrida publishes all of his three break-through books, "De la grammatologie", "L'écriture et la difference" and "La Voix et le phenomene", profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Although all three books are responsible for the introduction of Deconstruction, it is primarily "De la Grammatologie", Derrida's magnum opus, that has come to be associated with this groundbreaking concept."Jacques Derrida's revolutionary theories about deconstruction, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and structuralism, first voiced in the 1960's, forever changed the face of European and American criticism. The ideas in "De la grammatologie" sparked lively debates in intellectual circles that included students of literature, philosophy, and the humanities, inspiring these students to ask questions of their disciplines that had previously been considered improper. Thirty years later, the immense influence of Derrida's work is still igniting controversy..." (Review, Spivak's translation of Derrida's "Of Grammatology", 1997).Derrida's concern is to bring to light the binary schema that is hidden in all kinds of texts and ideas of culture. In the present text Derrida brilliantly reveals some of the principles of deconstruction, not through theoretical explication, but, rather, by demonstration, showing that the arguments promulgated by their subject-matter exceed and contradict the oppositional parameters in which they are situated. Put into other words, deconstruction seeks to expose, and then to subvert, the various binary oppositions that undergird our dominant ways of thinking. The ideas that Derrida here present have had an enormous impact on a number of the human sciences, including psychology, literary theory, cultural studies, linguistics, feminism, sociology and anthropology. Due to this work, a whole new world of problematic suppression and marginalisation has become apparent, making "De la grammatologie" one of the most important philosophical works of the later part of the 20th century. "One of the major works in the development of contemporary criticism and philosophy". (J. Hillis Miller, Yale University)
