Heights (Columbia University Student Newspaper) : September 1967 -- Vol. 1, No. 1

New York: Postcrypt Press (Earl Hall, Columbia University), 1967. Original wraps. Very Good +. The uncommon Sept. 1967 maiden issue of this short-lived student weekly, issued firmly in the spirit of time (1967) and place (Columbia). Suffused with a radical energy and a palpable distrust of the school's administration, the paper foreshadows the showdown-to-come, which would of course shut down the campus a little over half a year later and generate world headlines in the process. This copy has held up nicely: Clean and VG+, with a thin, even horizontal crease halving the paper and with one very small closed tear along the front panel's upper-edge. 15" tall, 12 pgs. In a nod to the Beat movement (which Columbia's campus gave birth to), the rear page is a lavish reprint of part of Lawrence Ferlinghetti's "Coney Island of the Mind"

A revised edition by Peter van der Krogt has been in course of publication since 1997; at time of writing (October 2016), nine volumes have appeared, and the original work continues to be the essential carto-bibliographical research tool for most Dutch land atlases of the modern period (c. 1690-1940) and for all celestial and maritime atlases. For many it will remain the preferred tool, given the high cost of the revised edition (publisher's retail price for Parts I-IVa is €7335; ISBN 9789061942481;; link). ¶ Fine, unmarked set.

Pictures to be Read / Poetry to be Seen (multiple)

Chicago: Museum of Contemporary Art, 1967. First edition. Objects and pamphlet in a plexiglass box with printed label. One of 500 numbered copies. This multiple was created for the supporters and artists who participated in the opening exhibition at Chicago's then newly-founded Museum of Contemporary Art. Museum Director Jan van der Marck invited twelve artists to designate a small object with no intrinsic value "that would somehow be expressive of your likes and ideas". The staff acquired 500 of the selected items and placed one of each in a Plexiglas box along with a small brochure reproducing the artists' correspondence. The box contains a comb (Ray Johnson), crayon (R. B. Kitaj), candy cigar (Jim Nutt), miniature bar of soap (Shusaku Arakawa), safety pin (Gianfranco Baruchello), photograph (Mary Bauermeister), mustard seeds glued on a wooden stick (George Brecht), a pair of small dice (Öyvind Fahlström), a large screw (Allan Kaprow), a bottle cap (Alison Knowles), a fishing lure (Gianni-Emilio Simonetti), and a light bulb (Wolf Vostell).
