        Têtes-mortes

» (Pascale Casanova in Beckett l'abstracteur).

Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the ?San Diego Union,? ?The San Diego Union-Tribune,? and the ?San Diego Evening Tribune? from 1947 until his death in 1973.What was enclosed by Nixon is present: ?A Reader?s Digest Reprint,? 6p, 5? x 7.5?, on one 15? x 7.5? sheet folded in thirds. Two file holes matching the holes on the letter at the top of each page. ?What Happened to America:? by Richard M. Nixon was published in the October 1967 issue of ?The Reader?s Digest.?The quote used by Copley in his speech published in the ?FBI Law Enforcement Bulletin? and just used by Nixon in his article ?What Happened in America,? is bracketed in red by Nixon or Copley: ?No man is above the law and no man is below it; nor do we ask any man?s permission when we require him to obey it.?"

Dylizans [Stagecoach] (Original poster for the 1939 film)

Warsaw: Walter Wagner / United Artists, 1967. Original late 1960s Polish R61 poster for the Polish re-release of the 1939 US film, designed by Jerzy Treutler. From the collection of noted film historian Amos Vogel. Full provenance available. John Ford's smash hit and enduring masterpiece, "Stagecoach" revolutionized the Western, elevating it from B movie to the A-list and establishing the genre as we know it today. The quintessential tale of a group of strangers thrown together into extraordinary circumstances, "Stagecoach" features outstanding performances from Hollywood stalwarts Claire Trevor, John Carradine, and Thomas Mitchell. And, of course, John Wayne, in his first starring role for Ford, as the daredevil outlaw the Ringo Kid. Superbly shot and tightly edited, "Stagecoach" (Ford's first trip to what would become his beloved Monument Valley) is Hollywood storytelling at its finest. 23 x 33 inches, non-archivally mounted on board. Light rubbing and soil, pulling slightly from one corner. Very Good plus overall. Shipping billed at cost. Criterion Collection 515.

1967 IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT ORIGINAL CONTINUITY / SCREENPLAY with ACADEMY AWARDS RELATED SIGNED LETTER by Director NORMAN JEWISON

Hollywood, Califoarnia Mirisch Corporation, United Artists 1967. Mirisch Corporation, United Artists: Hollywood, Califoarnia, 1967.ORIGINAL COMBINED CONTINUITY SCRIPT / SCREENPLAY of IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT, the 1967 FILM Directed by NORMAN JEWISON and Starring ROD STEIGER and SIDNEY POITIER. This Combined Continuity (each scene is described in full detail "combining" camera shots, camera angles, dialogue, actions, etc.) is dated June 12th, 1967. At the end of the last page is the statement: "Continuity taken from work picture (a working print) & mag track (magnetic sound track) by Laura Rosser's Film Continuity Service, P.O. Box 1603, Hollywood 28, California, Phone: NO 1-16115". The film was produced by The Mirisch Corporation and Released by United Artists on August 2, 1967. Continuities (Continuity Scripts) were an important part of the film industry. Typically created after a film was "in the can", but before it was released, a continuity created a written "copy" of a film. A good "Continuity", especially a "Combined Continuity", provided a comprehensive transcription of the finished film. Continuities were created both for copyright protection and for a "record" of a film. Many early films easily degenerated, and many others were wiped out to recover their silver. A true continuity script was therefore often the only archived, word-by-word, shot-by-shot, scene-by-scene, record of many films. Mimeographed sheets, yellow front cover, 8.5x14", mimeographed on one side only, 98 pages plus the cover page. Two hole punched at the top and bound by a metal bracket. Laid in a legal size manila folder. The metal bracket has rusted somewhat and has left its rust imprint onto both the front and rear covers of the manila folder. The manila folder has a typed title on its tab: "IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT". This script was clearly filed away, perhaps in a legal department, perhaps in the Studio's files. LAID-IN the manila folder, on top of the Continuity / Screenplay, is a TYPED SIGNED LETTER by NORMAN JEWISON. The letter is on NORMAN JEWISON'S PERSONAL STATIONERY. The letter is addressed to PHILLIP LAMBRO, a Composer of Film Scores. The letter is dated APRIL 24, 1968, only 14 days after the April 10, 1968, 40th ACADEMY AWARDS that presented Oscars to films released in 1967. IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT won MULTIPLE OSCARS at the 40th Academy Awards, including BEST PICTURE (and, perhaps of interest to Phillip Lambro, BEST SOUND). Norman Jewison's letter to Phillip Lambro clearly refers to the film's success at the Academy Awards. The letter reads: "Dear Phillip: / Thank you for your thoughtful letter. It was muchly appreciated. / It was a very exciting and rewarding night for our picture, and I thank you again for caring. / Yours, / Norman (signed)". (Phillip Lambro is a composer who had a short career as a composer of film scores. Lambro wrote the original score to Polanski's film Chinatown, which, before the film was released, was replaced by a score by Jerry Goldsmith.) Condition: The cover / title page is mostly torn away from the metal bracket at the top, and is worn along its edges with small closed tears; the last few pages are worn along their bottom edge; otherwise a bright, clean copy that clearly has been safely filed away. The laid-in TLS letter has folds from where it was probably folded to fit into an envelope (envelope is not present), and has some general creases from handling, but remains sturdy, bright and clear. One of the 20th Centuries Great Films, with an Associated Letter from the Film's Director. Scarce. About the 40th Academy Awards (from Wikipedia): ******The 40th Academy Awards honored film achievements of 1967. Originally scheduled for April 8, 1968, the awards were postponed for two days until April 10, 1968, because of the assassination of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The big winner was Norman Jewison's IN THE HEAT OF THE NIGHT with FIVE OSCARS for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Screenplay, Best Film Editing, and Best Sound).****** Good

        ORGANIC TRAINS

np: np [Penny Press?], nd [1967]. First Edition. Wraps. Near fine. 8vo. Near fine in original stiff printed stapled wraps. Offset printed. Toning to spine, as common. Penned price (.50) to upper right corner of front cover. Else clean, sharp, and sound. Near fine. Carroll's first book, self-published when he was still in high school. The beginning of a remarkably varied career. Though better known for his cult memoir THE BASKETBALL DIARIES and eponymous punk band, poetry was Carroll's most sustained creative endeavor. And this volume served as his introduction to many of the writers and artists of the New York scene who would go on to be close friends and collaborators. Kerouac famously wrote of Carroll, "At 13 years of age [he] writes better prose than 89% of the novelists working today." A somewhat bibliographically murky book. Several sources attribute the book to "Penny Press," but we have been unable to trace this claim to any primary source. Such confusion may be due to the book's scarcity. One of about 500 copies, but according to Carroll?'s official website (citing the author himself), many were lost by the printer. We've been able to find only a few at auction or in the trade and OCLC locates just 8 copies. An important debut.

[Untitled; the first color poster done for the Black Panther Party by the artist who became the Party's Minister of Culture, inscribed and signed by the artist]

San Francisco: Black Panther Party, 1967. 17.5x21.5 inch poster depicting an African American mother smiling at her naked little boy who is carrying a long rifle, a target used for practice visible through the window of their dilapidated room. Several tears have been professionally restored with backing of Japan paper, and the four corners which had been lost have been similarly backed. The main place where this is visible is at lower right, where the corner loss impinged on the publication information (see close-up photo). Three roughly parallel creases from having been rolled. The artwork is dated October 1967, with the initials BPPSD (Black Panther Party for Self Defense). Pen inscription at bottom reads, "We must stand as men, than crawl as slaves - Emory." The phrase "Cal booth" is written in the top margin, perhaps referring to an event at UC Berkeley where the poster might have been displayed. Emory Douglas has referred to this as the first color painting he turned into a poster for the Panthers, at the urging of Eldrige Cleaver (See page 1, "Black Panther, the Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas").
