New York: The New Art Scene.

New York: Holt Rinehart and Winston, 1967 Hardcover First edition. Fine cloth-bound hardcover with light rubbing to the bottom edges of the boards and a printer's error to one page--one page has a small block of white at the corner where presumably a piece of paper interfered with the printing, a tiny tear at the corner, a tiny spot of printing to the verso, and a one-inch closed tear--in a Near Fine dust jacket with light tanning to the spine and a touch of rubbing to the extremities; lacking the card slipcase. A nice copy. All dust jackets are protected by a clear mylar cover. BOOKS SHIP THE NEXT BUSINESS DAY, WRAPPED IN PADDING, IN A BOX.         PICNIC AT HANGING ROCK.

Melbourne:: F. W. Cheshire. (1967).. The true first edition, the Australian edition. SIGNED, "With affection / Joan Lindsay 1968." An historical novel about a group of female students at an Australian women's college in 1900 who inexplicably vanish at the site of an enormous rock formation while on a Valentine's Day picnic. The rock formation featured in the story, Hanging Rock, is an actual geological formation located in Victoria, Australia. The novel was adapted into a critically acclaimed film of the same name in 1975 by director Peter Weir. Ring on front cover, otherwise about very good light wear to corners and spine ends and an abrasion, an erasure of a name we assume, at the top of front endpaper (about 2 x .75"). The dust jacket is about a quarter-inch taller than the book but shows only the barest wear and is near fine. .

Hombre (Original screenplay for the 1967 film, June 1965 draft)

Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1967. Revised draft script for the 1967 film. One of the great Westerns, and one that epitomizes the revisionist trend sparked by Elmore Leonard's early novels of the 1950s and 1960s. Newman plays a white man who was raised by the Apaches, and has since had to straddle two worlds, feeling truly comfortable in neither. While riding a stagecoach, he is subject to the racial bias of banker Fredric March and March's snooty wife Barbara Rush. In truth, March is an embezzler, a fact that comes out when the coach is held up by murderous bandit-chief Richard Boone. When the passengers fight back, Boone takes Rush as a hostage. Newman proves himself the bravest of the passengers, systematically and intelligently outwitting the bandits one by one, invoking Leonard's brilliant "white flag" scenario from the novel in the process. Along with "The Tall T," one of two superb Westerns adapted from an Elmore Leonard source, and one of Paul Newman's finest performances. Yellow studio wrappers, with "Revised Screenplay," the film's title and the Fox logo stamped on the front wrapper, and dated June 29, 1965. Title and date also stamped along the spine. Project No. 76 stamped at the top left corner of the front wrapper. Title page present, dated June 29, 1965, noted as Revised Screenplay, with credits for screenwriters Ravetch and Frank. 134 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 131. Mimeograph on eye-rest green stock. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Very Good plus with lightly yapped edges, bound with three gold brads. Housed in a custom cloth clamshell box.         Collected Poems: 1924 - 1955 [Signed]

Princeton University Press, 1967, Hardcover, Book Condition: Very Good +, Dust Jacket Condition: very good, First edition. A Very Good or perhaps better copy of the First American Edition -- also being the first edition in English, first printing (modest rubbing and slight pushing at spine ends, surface rubs to the board corners, upper leading board corners bumped, minor age darkening to the top of the page block, page block settled with a gap between the spine head and the closed page block), in a Very Good dust jacket (with the toning common to this title and light corner wear panel corners), SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS on the title page where he also has marked through his printed name. (The dust jacket is translucent and carries the Publisher's list of Princeton paperbacks on the verso.) The book presents a collection of George Seferis' Poetry, written over a three-decade period, in parallel text with the Poems given in Greek on the verso of the leaves and the English translation thereof presented on each facing recto. A Greek Diplomat and Ambassador to the UK, and one of the Twentieth Century's most important Greek Poets, George Seferis won the 1963 Nobel Prize in Literature for "his eminent lyrical writing, inspired by a deep feeling for the Hellenic world of culture", making him the first Greek ever to have received the Prize. Copies of this title are rather scarce to the market and signed copies of Seferis' works in translation are quite scarce to the market. A Very Good or better copy of a rather scarce book from the winner of a Nobel Prize in Literature, SIGNED BY GEORGE SEFERIS. QUITE SCARCE.

LE DIT DU MALHEUR DE LA TERRE RUSSE

[Nice or Paris (?): The Artist, 1967].. Folio (37 x 27 cm). Loose bifolia laid into collage handmade paper wrapper. Some speckling inherent in the paper stock, but fine, laid between two wooden boards with a single remaining jute tie. First edition of this artist's book. Only the title, the introductory paragraph and the justification are letterpress (in French). The remainder of the text (in Cyrillic) was hand lettered in multi-colors by the artist, accompanied by 11 original woodcuts and linocuts in colors. One of 25 numbered copies, each with variations, executed on rustic Brut d'Annonay paper, and signed by the artist. The text is attributed to a solder in the 18th century army of Prince Alexandre Nevsky. Staritsky (1908 - 1981) was born in Poltava in the Ukraine, and after formal training in Russia from the early 1920s through 1931, emigrated first to Belgium, where she worked in the advertising department of L?'École de la Cambre in Brussels (1932?-46). She relocated to Nice in 1946 and died in Paris. She is considered one of the leading representatives of the second generation of Russian émigré abstract artists.

Typed letter signed (as "Plum") to Don Bensen.

Remsenburg, NY: 17 July,, 1967. Single typed sheet, octavo (199 × 149 mm), with Wodehouse's Remsenburg letterhead printed in blue. Two neat transverse creases from folding. Excellent condition. Wodehouse, in the latter years of his American exile, writes to "Don" at the Scott Meredith Literary Agency, in a wistful mood: "I was terribly sorry to hear from Scott that the two books had done so badly and of course I am all for cancelling the next two. I don't think it's either of our faults. It is just that the taste of the paperback public has completely changed … The world has become so serious now and they only want serious stuff". The recipient is almost certainly noted author and editor Donald Bensen, who began his career with Scott Meredith before pursuing a career in publishing and also writing a run of science-fiction novels. He is perhaps best remembered for editing a number of works of Wodehousiana, including P. G. Wodehouse: A Centenary Celebration 1881-1991 and A Wodehouse Bestiary. One of the books to have done "so badly" is probably The Purloined Paperweight (UK title: Company for Henry), which had been published by Simon & Schuster two months previously on 12th May; prior to that, his short-story collection Plum Pie had been published by Herbert Jenkins in September 1966, though there was no US edition until December the following year. These books were by no means his last, however: he would write some half a dozen more before his death in 1975, starting with Do Butlers Burgle Banks? (1968) and A Pelican at Blandings (1969, US edition 1970).

        Paris.

Paris: Flammarion,, 1967. Quarto. Original buff cloth, spine lettered in green. With the dust jacket. 408 half-tone photographs of Paris. A fine copy in the dust jacket with a few nicks and bottom edge of front panel with a small tear ineffectually tape-repaired on verso. First published in 1961; this copy inscribed on the front free endpaper "à Robert Kennedy Jr., en mémoire de son père et en souvenir d'amitié pour les Etats Unis, d'une petite fille française, Paris le 28 juin 1968"*, signed in a different hand "Isabelle Turpin de Grissé, 7 ans", and below the pencilled ownership inscription of "Shriver". Robert F. Kennedy had been assassinated three weeks before, on 6th June; his son, Robert Kennedy Jr., was fourteen-years-old at the time. Shriver was the married name of Kennedy's sister Eunice, following her marriage to Sarjent in 1953. The Shrivers had five children, though Eunice would have presumably been the original owner in any case.

        Hitchcock

New York: Simon and Schuster,, 1967. With the collaboration of Helen G. Scott. Quarto. Original grey cloth, titles to spine white, pictorial endpapers. With the dust jacket. Bookseller's ticket to verso of front free endpaper, inkstamp and ownership signature to title page. Spine ends and tips lightly rubbed, board edges slightly faded. A very good copy in the ragged jacket with chipped and torn extremities and tape repairs to verso. First edition in English, first printing. This copy is inscribed by Truffaut on a card laid down to the front pastedown ("de la part de d'amitié"), and is from the library of Peter Bogdanovich, the American director, writer, and film historian, with his library stamp and signature to the title page. It is likely a gift to Bogdanovich from the author, as Truffaut consulted Bogdanovich's 1961 interview with Hitchcock in preparation for this book. It is based on an interview series with Alfred Hitchcock, conducted over a week at his offices at Universal Studios in 1962. The result of this journalistic enterprise "was one Truffaut's most enduring contributions to film culture". It was first published the preceding year under the title Le Cinèma selon Hitchcock.

1967 Marc Chagall The Circus With The Yellow Clown Mourlot Lithograph

1967 - "The Circus With The Yellow Clown" by Marc Chagall, Unsigned Lithograph printed in 1967 from an edition size of 2000. The overall is size of the Lithograph is 34 x 22 inches. The conditon of this piece has been graded as C: Several Signs of use and handling, some visible marks. Here is some supplemental information about the Lithograph: Original lithograph poster created for an exhibition of lithographs and engravings at the Berggruen Gallery in Paris in 1967, published by Berggruen, Paris. It was printed on the lithographic presses of Mourlot Freres in Paris, engraved by Charles Sorlier. Chagall's early life left him with a "powerful visual memory and a pictorial intelligence". After living in France and experiencing the atmosphere of artistic freedom, his "vision soared and he created a new reality, one that drew on both his inner and outer worlds." But it was the images and memories of his early years in Belarus that would sustain his art for more than 70 years.Of circus people he said, "Why am I so touched by their make-up and grimaces? With them I can move forward toward new horizons. Chaplin seeks to do in film what I am trying to do in my paintings. He is perhaps the only artist today I could get along with without having to say a single word."

        De la grammatologie.

(Paris), Minuet, 1967. 8vo. Original wrappers. A bit of light wear to extremities, a few spots to back wrapper, and upper corner slightly bent, otherwise a nice and clean copy. 445, (3) pp.. First edition (20 Septembre, 1967, numéro 630) of Derrida's seminal main work, the foundational text for deconstructive criticism.1967 marks a turning point in the history of modern philosophy, constituting the birth of "Deconstruction". In this one year, Derrida publishes all of his three break-through books, "De la grammatologie", "L'écriture et la difference" and "La Voix et le phenomene", profoundly altering the course of modern thought. Although all three books are responsible for the introduction of Deconstruction, it is primarily "De la Grammatologie", Derrida's magnum opus, that has come to be associated with this groundbreaking concept."Jacques Derrida's revolutionary theories about deconstruction, phenomenology, psychoanalysis, and structuralism, first voiced in the 1960's, forever changed the face of European and American criticism. The ideas in "De la grammatologie" sparked lively debates in intellectual circles that included students of literature, philosophy, and the humanities, inspiring these students to ask questions of their disciplines that had previously been considered improper. Thirty years later, the immense influence of Derrida's work is still igniting controversy..." (Review, Spivak's translation of Derrida's "Of Grammatology", 1997).Derrida's concern is to bring to light the binary schema that is hidden in all kinds of texts and ideas of culture. In the present text Derrida brilliantly reveals some of the principles of deconstruction, not through theoretical explication, but, rather, by demonstration, showing that the arguments promulgated by their subject-matter exceed and contradict the oppositional parameters in which they are situated. Put into other words, deconstruction seeks to expose, and then to subvert, the various binary oppositions that undergird our dominant ways of thinking. The ideas that Derrida here present have had an enormous impact on a number of the human sciences, including psychology, literary theory, cultural studies, linguistics, feminism, sociology and anthropology. Due to this work, a whole new world of problematic suppression and marginalisation has become apparent, making "De la grammatologie" one of the most important philosophical works of the later part of the 20th century. "One of the major works in the development of contemporary criticism and philosophy". (J. Hillis Miller, Yale University)

THE MASTER AND MARGARITA Translated from the Russian

Collins and The Harvill Press. London. 1967. FIRST EDITION of this translation. A very good copy in the original full colour illustrated dustwrapper which has one small closed tear, without any loss, to the top rear edge but still overall a very good, clean example. The scarce first printing of Glenny's popular translation. Preceded in 1967 by an inferior translation, by Mirra Ginsburg, which was taken from the heavily edited Russian edition, the Glenny version translates the complete novel and has always been the prefered text.

Lyndon Johnson appoints a nuclear physicist and former Manhattan Project scientist who would be instrumental in forging the 1970 Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and in opposing Reagan's "Star Wars" program

Washington, D.C., September 21, 1967. 23" x 18". "Partly-printed Document Signed, ""Lyndon B. Johnson,"" as President, 1 page, 23"" x 18"", Washington, September 21, 1967, appointing ""Henry De Wolf Smyth of New Jersey,"" as ""an Alternate Representative of the United States of America to the Eleventh Session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency..."" Two or three very minor specks of dirt, a few very mild creases, else extremely fine condition. The recipient, Henry De Wolf Smyth (1898-1986), was an accomplished physicist and diplomat. Smyth received his undergraduate and graduate degrees at Princeton, and was a member of the university's faculty for much of his career. During the Second World War he was a member of the National Defense Research Committee (1941-1943) where he proposed the electromagnetic methods that were used to enrich early samples of U-235 used in early work on the atomic bomb. From 1943 to 1945 he was a consultant to the Manhattan Project heading research on heavy water while also serving as director of the University of Chicago's Metallurgical Laboratory. In 1945, in the wake of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, he authored A General Account of the Development of Methods of Using Atomic Energy for Military Purposes (popularly known as the ""Smyth Report"") which was the first official, public account of the development of the atomic bomb.In 1949, Harry Truman nominated Smyth to become a member of the Atomic Energy Commission. Following the first successful Soviet atomic test the same year, he argued against Truman's proposal to pursue the hydrogen bomb. He resigned from the Atomic Energy Commission in 1954 over Lewis Strauss' campaign to revoke Robert Oppenheimer's security clearance despite his personal antipathy toward the former head of the Manhattan Project. In 1961 John F. Kennedy appointed Smyth the United States Representative to the International Atomic Energy Agency where he played a crucial role in the adoption of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in 1970. He retired from the IAEA the same year, but remained active in public affairs, most notably in his opposition to Ronald Reagan's Strategic Defense Imitative (a.k.a. ""Star Wars""), calling instead for joint reductions in nuclear arms stockpiles. "

Page 82 #44 of "The Prints of Roy Lichtenstein" a catalogue raisonne 1948-1993.Lichtenstein sought an anonymous style, removing personal reference to convey the appearance of mass production. Using a pallet of bright primary colors in his composition, Lichtenstein developed the, now famous, technique of stenciled dotted lines that mimicked and amplified commercial printing patterns.

FAKE: An Identity Theft Denunciation by Rufino Tamayo ******* An extraordinary art forgery, sold as by Rufino Tamayo and later personally denounced and defaced by the artist. Rufino Tamayo documented the event for Jacob D. Weintraub (the owner and prominent NY art dealer) by dramatically writing FAKE through the head and autographing his declaration below. The nonpareil Rufino Tamayo autograph nearly spans the width of the drawing. Accompanying the illustrated forgery document from Weintraub's collection is the rare deluxe issue of "Tamayo", which provides additional forensic support with its authentic Rufino Tamayo signature from the same time period on the justification leaf signed by contributors. *******

      - FORGED DRAWING: Three pieces of documentation on the rear backing, the art gallery seller label, a museum sticker used to augment provenance, and Weintraub's jottings on the purchase, establish some of the historical background. Forger: unknown. Media: pen & ink and pastel. Size: 240 x 319 mm (9.5 x 12.6 inches). Title: Woman with Outstretched Arms. Date: 1967. Artwork Price: $2,500.00 (after trade discount). Sale Date: February, 4, 1969. Seller: Maxwell Galleries, 551 Sutter St., San Francisco. Buyer: Weintraub Gallery, 992 Madison Avenue, New York. Date of Declaration of Forgery and the Altered Artwork: unknown, possibly Weintraub showed Tamayo the pastel drawing in 1971 or 1973 when the artist was visiting NY for the opening of solo exhibitions at the Perls Gallery. The on-the-spot denunciation transforms a mediocre forgery into a conceptual artwork on identity fraud and an art market that ceaselessly searches for in demand product. The banner style declaration in capitals spans 65 x 182 mm (2.6 x 7.2 inches) and is done in the manner of voiding a financial instrument with an artist's confidence in combining line and space; piercing a wrist and cutting into an eye, the central k carefully done with an insult-v-along the figure's nose joined to a cross-out x: the long T-bar of Tamayo's signature highlights the denunciation. PROVENANCE: The altered forgery and deluxe issue book were purchased together at auction from the Jacob D. Weintraub estate. After making his reputation as a dealer in German Expressionist art, Jacob Weintraub [1905-2000] opened a gallery in Manhattan in 1967 and he would have been purchasing after the 1968 Christmas season to add to inventory. Weintraub had a personal connection to the altered work and recognizing the great rarity of the event, kept this remarkable art history picture-document for his private collection. BOOK: "Tamayo" by Juan Garcia Ponce, Galeria de Arte Misrachi, Mexico City, 1967, first edition (the American Tudor edition is often misidentified as the first edition), example no. 71 from the deluxe issue, comprising the first 110 examples from the limited edition of 3110 examples, all texts in Spanish and English, printing by Litografia Graue, Sociedad Anónima. DELUXE ISSUE: Printed on Sirius cardstock paper, justification leaf signed and numbered no. 71 by Rufino Tamayo, additionally signed by Fernando Lopez Valencia, the bookbinder, Francisco Graue, the principal editor and German Torres, the printer; handbound in soft tan calf, the upper side decorated with an original Tamayo brush design in green with title in black letters, the top edge rolled in heavy gold leaf imprinted with a repeating lozenge scale pattern; folio sewn with raffia endpapers delicately brushed with gold leaf, one inner panel on each side ruled with gold leaf borders, binding signed by Fernando Lopez Valencia in gold leaf. SIZE: 410 x 320 mm (16.14 x 12.6 inches). PAGINATION: Complete; 66 unnumbered pages, 28 pages of texts in Spanish, followed by a complete English translation, texts illustrated with 23 b/w reproductions, some full-page, one double-page + suite of 33 lithographed, full-page color plates reproducing selected Tamayo oil paintings with facing captions. CONDITION: Forged Drawing: Fine / Tamayo Documentation: Fine / Gallery Label: Fine / SBMA Sticker: Very Good / Picture Frame: Poor / Book: lacks the called for, original signed Tamayo drawing, lacks the raffia board slipcase. / Pages: bright and clean, many with light fore-edge bend, some with the top corner slightly bumped. / Covers: bright and clean; slight rubs, top corners slightly bumped, spine with some footwear and a light crown rub. / Gilt: Fine / Binding: Very Good.         The Original Kiss Drawings Picture Letter Sent to Staff and Contributors at MAD

      - THE PICTURE LETTER: illustrates the collegial working atmosphere at MAD. It begins with a work update for Jerry DeFuccio and ends with eight valediction kiss drawings, each done for a prominent MAD staff member, or contributor, seven displayed, as a continuous strip on the rear, all on the theme of, "What is my response to a kiss from Sergio?" Each drawing shows an affectionate Sergio kiss and the comic response of the recipient, respectively: Jerry DeFuccio (Associate Editor), Lenny Brenner (Chief Production Consultant), Nick Meglin (Contributing Editor), Al Feldstein (Editor), Bill Gaines (Publisher), John Putnam (Art Director), Antonio Prohias (mentor to Aragonés, known for his "Spy vs. Spy" feature), and Al Jaffee (much admired by Aragonés, known for his rear fold-in, and regular feature, "Snappy Answers to Stupid Questions"). The letter is done in pen & red ink, both sides of a 10.9 x 8.4 inches (276 x 213 mm) sheet, English, except date in Spanish (August 21, 1967), sited Palma on Majorca, 17 lines, and with 5 corrections, signing off, "Smack! Love" with the 8 valediction kiss drawings, first with the unnamed DeFuccio. An arrow points to the strip's continuation, at the rear, where a heading names the others receiving a goodbye, four mentioned in the letter. CONTENTS: Aragonés posted from the island of Majorca, where he was vacationing with his wife and recovering from the 'flu'. Now feeling much better, he tells DeFuccio he is drawing again and New York can soon expect more of his marginals, (his MAD feature, "crammed with crowds of silly people doing silly things.") [Evanier] He requests art supplies from Lenny Brenner; cheerily mentions John Putnam's visit; references sending an early version of, "What is a Square" and asks for feedback on cells Al Feldstein has approved (feature in June 68 issue, no. 119), suggesting MAD feature writer, Tom Koch could do an allied feature, "What is a Sucker?", for which he would do the artwork. PORTRAITS WITH SERGIO SHOW: 1) Jerry DeFuccio, a model of patience; 2) Lenny Brenner, goggle-eyed with hair standing on end; 3) Nick Meglin, a satyr, panting with extended tongue; 4) Al Feldstein, kissed on the back of the head, grimaces with teeth bared; 5) Bill Gaines, yelping in mock resignation; 6) John Putnam, closely embraced, waits in shock for his release; 7) Antonio Prohias, eyes closed, blissfully smiles (as if remembering something sweet); 8) Al Jaffee smacks Sergio with a roundhouse to the jaw, captioned, "Soc!" (no fold-in from Al). CONDITION: Bright and clean, customary mailing folds; never mounted; a bottom corner crease, two tips with gentle creases, one tip with trace bend; a few fingering impresses, chiefly at bottom edge. SERGIO ARAGONÉS [1937-]: began drawing for MAD shortly after coming to New York City in 1962, from Mexico.
