Playtime [Play Time] (Original French Poster for the 1967 film)

Paris: Jolly Film, 1967. Original French theatrical poster for the 1967 French film. Monsieur Hulot first came to the attention of the world during his beach vacation in "Monsieur Hulot's Holiday" (1953), then reappeared in a modern French neighborhood in "Mon Oncle" (1958). The third feature finds him in the city, whose complexities unfold, revolve, deconstruct, and reconstruct before his eyes. A masterpiece of French cinema. Using his own money, director Tati meticulously constructed a second "Paris" outside of Paris for the third--and most magnificent--of the four Hulot films. Fine, 24 x 32 inches, on archival linen, rolled. Criterion 112.

How Much Loving Does a Normal Couple Need? [Common Law Cabin] (Four original lobby cards from the 1967 film)

Los Angeles: Eve Productions, 1967. Four original vintage lobby cards from the US release of the 1967 film. Originally titled "How Much Loving Does a Normal Couple Need?" but in recent years released as "Common Law Cabin." After taking a detour into heavy-chested black-and-white crime cinema with "Mudhoney," "Faster, Pussycat! Kill! Kill!" and "Motor Psycho" (all in 1965), Russ Meyer returned to glorious Eastmancolor with this racy romp about an ex-detective on the run with some stolen jewels. He lands at an Arizona dude ranch and sets about seducing all the women there in attempt to buy the property--but the women have other plans for him. Russ Meyer's nearly singular, auteur-minded voice in sexploitation set him apart from nudie pictures, pornography, and even typical exploitation fare, and this film encountered the usual censorship problems, beginning with the lobby cards with their images of heaving bosoms, couples getting it on the mud, and a titalating byline that reads "A slow, simmering look at fast boiling women who can't see the line between love and lust!" as well as two direct mentions of two female characters who are sexually involved with their fathers. 14 x 11 inches, 3-color. Fine with no pinholes.

Outstanding Typed Letter Signed about her work with Anna and Sigmund Freud

London, 1967. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, Maresfield Gardens, London, October 24, 1967. Written to New York book editor and writer Robert Sussman Stewart, providing biographical information on her work with Anna and Sigmund Freud, in part: "...I was in Vienna from 1925 and was connected with Miss Freud's work with children from then on...I did work with the blind from about 1930, first observing children in an institution for the blind in Vienna and have followed up this interest since then. What I have tried to follow is how lack of sight effects (sic) the development of the child, their orientation, concepts, etc...This of course was an analytical study...I left Vienna before Professor Freud and his family. At the time of the Nazi's invasion I was recuperating from a serious illness. Professor urged me to leave, as if I got ill again I would only be a hindrance to them. I should wait in Switzerland for them. This I did and there I had many telephone conversations with Dr. Jones as I spoke quite often with Miss Freud on the telephone in Vienna and Dr. Jones and I shared whatever information we had..." Accompanied by the original postmarked envelope. Natural folds and one small diagonal crease near the top; boldly signed and in near fine condition. World-acclaimed child psychoanalyst and lifelong partner of Anna Freud, with whom she collaborated on several ground-breaking studies on the analysis of children. Her work with blind children is still considered to be a landmark of empathic scientific observation. She was the daughter of artist Louis Comfort Tiffany and the granddaughter of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the founder of Tiffany & Co.

        Eigenh. Brief mit U.

Villeneuve, 24. VIII. 1967. - 1¾ SS. 8vo. Mit eh. adr. Kuvert. Briefkopf.

Cien años de soledad [One Hundred Years of Solitude]

Editorial Sudamerica, Buenos Aires 1967 - RARE FIRST EDITION GARCIA MARQUEZ'S MASTERPIECE. One Hundred Years of Solitude is "that cultural phenomenon the like of which we see seldom in our times. Here is a great and complex book that, within its covers, includes every possible aspect of human life and, in its art and structure, demonstrates a sophistication and mastery the equal of Melville, Joyce, Proust, Faulkner, or Nabokov at their best. At the same time the book enjoys continued high sales in Colombia, in Latin America, and throughout much of the world. For such a confluence of high art and popular success one needs to go back to the nineteenth century, when entire French families would anxiously await the next installment from Balzac or Hugo, and Yankee audiences would pack the halls in order to see and hear Dickens in the flesh. "It would be impossible to overestimate the impact that Garcia Marquez's chronicle has had on the larger reading public. Some statistics and anecdotes should suffice to convey the extent of its influence. When the Argentine publisher Editorial Sudamericana issued the first edition of Cien años de soledad in 1967, initial projections were of gradual sales of ten thousand copies and an annual trickle thereafter. As it happened, the first printing of eight thousand copies sold out in a week, all of them at subway station newsstands in Buenos Aires. Soon the novel was taking the continent by storm, and to this day the pace has not abated, the number of copies sold in the Hispanic world long ago having surpassed the ten million mark" (Bell-Villada, Garcia Marquez: The Man and His Work). Buenos Aires: Editorial Sudamerica, 1967. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers; custom box. Some creasing and soiling to spine and rear panel; usual light text toning around edges; minor dampstaining to top of rear cover creeping only into final blank and rear text block edge. A very good copy of a notoriously rare and fragile book. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Start Your Own Religion

(Millbrook): (Kriya Press). (1967). Advice for dropping out, turning on and tuning in, as based on Leary's experience founding L.S.D. (The League of Spiritual Discovery). Includes By-Laws and guidelines for the legal incorporation of a new religion. One of Leary's most important books, written while he was at Millbrook during the height of the counterculture. Illustrated with numerous photographs, many of them from Millbrook. Leary was a counterculture guru/celebrity at the time, and at the peak of his influence. Legal troubles a year later resulted in his being sent to prison, eventually escaping with the help of an underground political group and going into exile. This volume is one of his scarcest publications. Foxing to covers, and a tiny price and chip to rear cover; near fine in stapled wrappers. First Edition. Softcover.

        Flosculi Sententiarum: Printers Flowers Moralised

(Northampton, MA: Gehenna Press, 1967. Baskin, Leonard. Quarto. (31)ff. One of 250 copies, this one inscribed in pencil from Leonard Baskin to Ben Tighe, a well-known bookseller in the Northampton area. The inscription is curiously dated "1947" in Baskin's hand. Using the collection of type ornaments owned by Bruce Rogers, Baskin has interpreted and embellished twenty-eight mottos with inks of many different colors. He has created a delightfully gentle typographical "collage," and he later said that this book was one of his favorites. With an Afterword by Dale R. Roylance. Bottom corner lightly bumped, else fine in quarter vellum over marbled boards.

The Velvet Underground - SIGNED COVER WITH A DRAWING OF A PENIS

Silkscreen collage banana on cardboard LP cover, designed by Andy Warhol for use on the groundbreaking 1967 debut album The Velvet Underground & Nico on Verve Records. This copy signed and inscribed by the artist "Andy Warhol" in blue ink and augmented with a drawing of a penis along the right side, and by the additional of two balls at the base of the banana. Cm : 31,8 x 31,8 cm; Inch : 12 1/2 x 12 1/2 inThe banana decal, torn across the base of the stem, was evidently at one point peeled off and moved to where a ghosted outline of it now remains. The artist seems then to have started the inscription upper right ("To George"?), thought better of it, and returned the banana to its normal original position as issued (as it is now affixed) and then completed the penis and balls sketches and signature around it. A little messy, but very cool! The Velvet Underground & Nico is the debut album by American rock band the Velvet Underground and vocal collaborator Nico. It was originally released in March 1967 by Verve Records. Recorded in 1966 during Andy Warhol's Exploding Plastic Inevitable multimedia event tour, the album cover is recognizable for featuring a Warhol print of a banana. Early copies of the album invited the owner to "Peel slowly and see"; peeling back the banana skin revealed a flesh-colored banana underneath. A special machine was needed to manufacture these covers (one of the causes of the album's delayed release), but MGM paid for costs figuring that any ties to Warhol would boost sales of the album. The original copies of the album with the peel-sticker feature are now rare collector's items.
