Autograph Letter Signed to fellow suffragette Emily Pierson regarding the death of Spencer Tracy

N.p.: N.p., 1967. An intimate and extremely moving autograph letter signed from Katharine Hepburn to longtime fellow suffragette Emily Pierson, regarding the death of Spencer Tracy. Equally as touching as the content is the fact that the letter is executed on Tracy's personal stationery, with Hepburn's St. Ives Street address in Los Angeles added by hand at the top right corner. An amazing piece, a triumvural association relating to the most famous cinematic love affair of the twentieth century and, more subtly, to Hepburn's long association with the women's suffrage movement in the United States. Though undated the letter was clearly written within days of Tracy's passing on June 10, 1967. After a decades-long and much publicized love affair with Hepburn, Tracy (who never divorced his wife) spent the majority of the final two years of his life with his great love. Hepburn describes in some detail her last moments with him, sentiments she would later echo in her autobiography: "It was a massive coronary at 3AM. I'm sure he'd had no feelings of anything weird because he did not ring my bell. I heard him go down the hall to [the] kitchen. I got up to keep him--I knew he was going to make a cup of tea, [and] I always left a kettle on the boil. And as I put my hand on the kitchen door I heard a sigh and a crash, and across the room I went. He was totally dead--a great exit, the best--and Spence was tired out. I used to wonder how in hell that darling heart kept beating. I don't know what I'll do, but I'll let you know. ... Kath." 9.5 x 6.25 inches. Single leaf, executed on recto and verso in black ink. Near Fine.

The Equinox of the Gods benefit concert celebration for Lucifer Rising at The Straight Theater in San Francisco, September 21, 1967

San Francisco: The Bringers of Light / The Straight Theatre, 1967. Original poster, designed by Randy Salas, for "The Equinox of the Gods," a celebration by Kenneth Anger commemorating the autumn equinox and a benefit to raise money for the completion of Anger's "Lucifer Rising" (eventually released in 1980). The celebration was held at the Straight Theatre on Haight St., San Francisco on September 21, 1967. It featured an Aleister Crowley ceremony performed by Anger, with live music by Bobby Beausoleil's The Magick Powerhouse of Oz, as well as other performances. Anger had a career-long fascination with the mystic and magical, but "Lucifer Rising" was the first of his films to directly address such themes. The film was partially shot in Egypt and is dominated by the iconography of ancient Egyptian religion. Ra, the solar deity portrayed on the poster, his headdress bearing the mark of the beast, 666, is an idea Anger would pursue in the film. At the time of the "The Equinox of the Gods" celebration, Bobby Beausoleil was cast as Lucifer, though his role in the film changed after he fell out with Anger over his involvement with drugs. Anger accused Beausoleil of stealing footage from the film, after which Anger moved to London and Beausoleil relocated to Charles Manson's Spahn Ranch. In 1969, on Manson's instruction, Beausoleil murdered Gary Hinman and was sentenced to life imprisonment. When in London, Anger solicited the help of Jimmy Page to score the film, but Page's work was never integrated with the film. In the mid-1970s, with the footage complete, Anger approached Beausoleil, while still in prison, to score and perform the soundtrack. Footage from the "Equinox of the Gods" celebration was shot by Ben Van Meter and later used in Anger's "Invocation of my Demon Brother" (1969). Poster 21.5 x 29 inches, rolled. Fine. Sitney, pp. 113-118.

        Le Message

Hermann, Paris 1967 - A rare early work by the acclaimed Belgian painter and illustrator, published two years prior to his first one-man show in New York. Folon's hopeful note regarding Shahn's health is particularly poignant, as it must date from early April 1967 - the beginning of a precipitous decline in Shahn's health which would end in his death in early 1969, and just weeks before the sudden, devastating death in London of his daughter Susanna. Folon's reference to permissions for Shahn's Sacco-Vanzetti paintings is elusive; we can find no evidence that Folon ever borrowed the Sacco-Vanzetti theme in his own work. Original black linen-covered boards with paper cover label, 9.5cm x 12.5cm; unpaged (24 leaves). Warmly and lengthily inscribed to Ben Shahn on second blank, in Folon's miniscule hand: "Mr. Ben Shahn, Un grand merci pour votre lettre et pour l'autorisation concernant Sacco-Vanzetti. Bien entendu, il faut r'conter le docteur mais je suis certain que vous serez tres vite en grande forme, et en magnifique santé, et fin-avril, ce sera une immense joie de vous revoir à Roosevelt." Mild wear and light soil to covers; internally fine. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        Cien años de Soledad

1967 - A Nobel Prize winner, one of the most important South American literary works of the 20th century. 1967. Buenos Aires. Editorial Sudamericana. In 8vo (196 mm x 130 mm). 351. Pictorial wrappers in excellent condition, only a little darkened and rubbed. Housed in a handsome half morocco case over boards, with inlays of morocco emulating the cover of the book, spine flat, lettered in gilt. Uniform browning as often, else very good. First edition. This can only be regarded as Garcia Marquez’ masterpiece, the book that would earn him the Nobel Prize for literature –along with others- and a position in the ranks of the major league for contemporary authors. As expected the book that ultimately popularized South American literature was an immediate bestseller, with three editions published the same year in June and December, this being the real first edition, published in May. The editorial company was in a rush to have the book published, so it neglected to utilize the image Marquez wanted for the cover, later editions actually have the image he wanted. We should comment on the fact that it is rare finding a copy in the original binding, and in such excellent condition. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Frost On Sunday and The Frost Report: Typescripts of sketches, many amended by hand, written for two shows starring David Frost.

N.p. [London]: N.p. 1967-8. A small quantity of original typescripts, printed typescripts and photocopied typescripts, many secured with staple to top left corner, and many with handwritten amendments, additions and deletions. Housed in a blue card folder bearing a typed white paper label label reading TERRY JONES & MIKE PALIN. Some wear and toning consistent with their age, staples mostly rusted, otherwise in near fine condition. A SMALL QUANTITY OF ORIGINAL, PRINTED AND PHOTOCOPIED TYPESCRIPTS OF SKETCHES WRITTEN BY TERRY JONES AND MICHAEL PALIN FOR FROST ON SUNDAY AND THE FROST REPORT, WITH EXTENSIVE CORRECTIONS, AMENDMENTS AND REWRITES BY BOTH. Terry Jones and Michael Palin first met as undergraduates at Oxford and, after graduating, began writing together for TV comedy shows. All the future Pythons save Terry Gilliam worked together for the first time on The Frost Report (1966-7), which also featured, both as writers and performers, Ronnie Barker and Ronnie Corbett. The show ran for twenty-eight episodes over two series, and launched everyone who was to be anyone in British comedy for the next twenty years. Less well-known but just as formative for those who worked on it, Frost On Sunday ran for thirty-six episodes between 1968 and 1970. It again featured the two Ronnies, and featured among its writers Barry Cryer, David Nobbs, Esmonde and Larbey, Dick Vosburgh, Neil Shand -- and Jones and Palin, once again writing as a team. Although the programme only ever credited the pair as writers on two late episodes, the material offered here shows that the pair were an integral part of the team from the show's beginning. This remarkable collection features one sketch written for The Frost Report.; most of the rest of the material was written for Frost On Sunday. Many episodes of the show were wiped and are now presumed lost; the surviving material has been released on a 3-disc DVD distributed by Network. A UNIQUE COLLECTION OF ORIGINAL SKETCH MATERIAL BY TWO OF BRITAIN'S BIGGEST COMEDY NAMES, WRITTEN JUST BEFORE THE BIRTH OF MONTY PYTHON. The sketches for Frost On Sunday, all typescripts, are headed FROST ON SUNDAY unless otherwise stated, followed by either 'by Terry Jones & Michael Palin' or 'by Jones & Palin', and are as follows: -- Julie Andrews. 3pp. 2 copies. i) Original typescript written for Palin to perform with Ronnie Corbett (specified in text). ii)Photocopied typescript, earlier draft, with pencilled amendments in Palin's hand to first page. Dated 22 July 1968. -- Political Commentator. 1p. 2 copies, one typescript and one photocopy, the latter heavily rewritten in Palin's hand. Dated 31 July 1968. -- Holidays. 2pp. 2 copies, one typescript and one photocopy Dated 1 August 1968. -- The New Breed. 2 copies, 2pp. and 3pp. Printed typescripts, same text but differently set. 2pp. version dated 8 August 1968. Other undated. -- Olympics Selection. 2pp. Printed typescript, written for Palin to perform with Ronnie Corbett (specified in text). Dated 14 August 1968. -- The Friendly Postman and The Friendly Postman Mark II (two copies). 2pp. each. Original typescripts and a printed typescript, significantly different drafts of the same sketch, written for Ronnie Corbett to perform (specified in the text). Four minor handwritten corrections to the first draft, one to the second, and two to the printed copy. All three headed FORST [sic]ON SUNDAY; both dated 15 August 1968. -- New University. 1p. Original typescript. Three small handwritten corrections, inked ticks and question marks to margin. Dated 21 August 1968. -- Nixon. 2pp. Printed typescript. Dated 22 August 1968. -- Cricket Commentators. 3pp. Photocopied typescript, with numerous rewrites in Palin's hand in blue biro. Dated 27 August 1968. -- Argyll And Sutherland Highlanders (film). 2pp. Original typescript. Inked ticks, crosses and question marks to margin, otherwise unmarked. Dated 27 August 1968. -- Opening Speech. 1p. Photocopied typescript. Dated 11 September 1968. -- Monologue For His Good Self (three copies). 2pp. each. i) Original typescript. ii) Printed copy, with pencilled deletions and corrections (and a doodle in top right hand corner of p. 1), all in Jones' hand. iii) A second printed copy, unamended, on yellow paper. All three dated 11 September 1968. -- Wedding. 4pp. Original typescript (pp. 1-2) and printed typescript (pp. 3-4). Extensively amended in pencil in Palin's hand. With a second copy, printed typescript on yellow paper. Both dated 11 September 1968 -- Gone With The Wind. 3pp. Printed corrected typescript. Dated 18 September 1968. -- Trade Figures. 2pp. Two copies. i) Original typescript. ii) Printed typescript, heavily amended by Palin , the amendments mostly blue-pencil deletions. Both dated 19 September 1968. -- The Considerate Doctor. 3pp. Original typescript. Minor handwritten amendments (parentheses, deletions etc.). Dated 19 September 1968. -- The Spy. 2pp. Photocopied typescript, marked '12 copies' at top right hand corner of first page. WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text). Dated 2 October 1968. -- Lavatory. 2pp. i) Original typescript. WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text). No programme heading. ii) 4pp. camera script of the sketch from the show, probably Series 1 Episode 11, broadcast on 13 October 1968. -- The Weapons Expert. 1p. Original typescript, WRITTEN FOR RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text). Dated 16 October 1968. -- One Downmanship. 3pp. Written by Jones and Palin with Michael Terry. Original typescript, WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text), and marked REWRITE by Jones at top right hand corner. One handwritten stage direction added by Jones -- and, also in Jone's hand, a self-deprecating comment on the sketch to top right hand corner of first page: 'V. bad/ stay in after/ transmission'. Dated 2 October 1968. -- Scouting In The Modern Age. 1p. Original typescript, one red-line deletion. Written for Ronnie Barker (specified in text). Dated 22 October 1968. -- The Hotel. 2pp. Original typescript, WRITTEN TO BE PERFORMED BY RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text). Minor deletions and amendments to second page. Dated 22 October 1968. -- Secret Service. 2pp. Two copies. i) Original typescript, two single-word corrections. ii)Printed typescript, heavily amended in Jones's hand, with deletions, rewrites and a doodled bomb. Both undated. -- Censorship. 2pp. i) Original typescript titled CENSORSHIT [sic], the words 'A 'Typing Error' in Jones's hand beneath. The introduction deleted, and in the top right hand corner of p. 1 Jones has written INTRO. UNIMPORTANT COPIES TO EVERYBODY. AUTOCUE AS SOON AS POSS.'. WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT TO PERFORM WITH FROST (specified in text). A stage direction after the introduction reads CUT TO THE TWO RONNIES -- certainly one of the first public references to Messrs. Barker and Corbett by the name which would later define them. ii) A second copy, with the last four lines of the sketch blue-pencilled. iii) A 1p. photocopy of the sketch. -- Chocolates. 4pp. Original typescript. Undated. -- Football Commentator. 1p. Printed typescript. Undated. -- A Quickie. Original typescript of a three-line gag. Pencilled instruction -- '12 copies'-- to top right hand corner. Undated. The rest of the material in the archive is as follows: -- Sketch for The Frost Report On Money : A Sketch Exemplifying The Many And Various Difficulties Experienced By By [sic] Strangers To This Island Of Ours In Their Dealings With English Finance In General And The Monetary System In Particular. 2 pp. Hand-dated 3 April 1967 by Jones. WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text). The Money episode of The Frost Report was the first episode of the show's second series, and was broadcast on 6 April 1967. NONE OF THE SECOND SERIES OF THE FROST REPORT IS KNOWN TO HAVE SURVIVED. -- Sketch entitled Overdraft, no programme given, undated. Original typescript, 2pp. WRITTEN FOR RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text), and almost certainly written for Frost On Sunday. -- Sketch entitled The End Of Steam, no programme given, undated. Printed typescript, 1p. Written as a filmed drop-in -- an expensive idea in which, in the wake of cuts to the rail service, several carriages of commuting businessmen arrive at and leave a rural station in a non-existent train. -- Sketch entitled Party Political Broadcast, Jones' and Palin's names handwritten by Jones at head, no programme given, but dated 26 September 1968 and so almost certainly for use on Frost On Sunday. Original typescript, 2pp. Two handwritten amendments by Jones. -- Sketch entitled Business Men's Lunch, no programme given, undated. Printed typescript, 1p. Two copies. -- Sketch entitled The Jury (MK II), headed The Marty Feldman Show, this title deleted. Dated 4 May 1968. Two copies. i) Original typescript, 2pp., with, in pencil, '12 / Prisoner: Keith Smith', to top right hand corner of p.1. The first episode of Frost On Sunday was not broadcast until 4 August of that year. Jones and Palin were regular writing contributors to Feldman's show Marty (1968). This sketch may have found a home there, or it may have been reheated for David Frost (the deletion of the show title suggests the latter). ii) A second copy, a printed typescript on yellow paper, 3pp. -- Camera script for sketch entitled Doctor Sketch, 10pp. Printed typescript on yellow paper, undated. From an unidentified episode of Frost On Sunday. Written by Jones and Palin, AND FEATURING RONNIE BARKER AND RONNIE CORBETT (specified in text).

        Atlas Shrugged

New York: Random House, 1967. Tenth Anniversary Edition; one of 2000 numbered and signed copies. Octavo, original blue cloth. Signed by Ayn Rand. Previous ownership inscription, near fine in the original slipcase. The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives.

Contract for "The Green Knight" 5th December 1967.

One contract of 6 pages, typescript on thin typing paper 32.5 x 20 cm stapled to red card backing, signed by Mick Jagger, Christopher Gibbs and Nigel Lesmoir Gordon, plus Marianne Faithfull, Jagger's then girlfriend, as witness; with a typescript film treatment of 16 pages stapled together at top left, 29 x 22 cm, with manuscript annotations; a little chipping to folds, a little browning, very good. This unique pair of documents records a highly ambitious project that sadly never came to fruition. As Marianne Faithfull recalls in Faithfull: An Autobiography (2000): "Mick began taking acting lessons ...Then there was THE MAN WHO SHOT MICK JAGGER and a whole slew of hippie projects. Christopher Gibbs and Nigel Gordon had written a script based on the mystical Middle English romance GAWAIN AND THE GREEN KNIGHT. Mick was going to play the Green Knight - Mick and Keith do the Middle Ages!" (pp. 149-50). Not only was Jagger going to star, this was also likely to be his debut as a producer. The contract here is between Jagger and Christopher Gibbs, his interior designer, and Nigel Gordon, a film editor working for the producer David Cammell, to produce a 25 page treatment of the legend of Sir Gawain to be called provisionally, The Green Knight. The two writers were to begin work on Christmas Day 1967 and deliver the treatment by 1st May 1968. We cannot be sure when the pair delivered their work, but it was nine pages short and had transformed from The Green Knight into The story of Venus and the quest for Arthur's kingdom, a tale set initially in a Welsh gold mine in 1700 and New York in 1968 before settling on an Arthurian England of knights, mystical ladies and an improbable red floating sphere. The project never went any further than this, but it is a fascinating snapshot of the projects that Jagger, the Rolling Stones and the counter-culture in general were beginning to get involved in as the 1960s progressed and their ambitions grew. Neither was this the end of the road for Gibbs and Gordon as film collaborators with Jagger - Gibbs was employed as Consultant Designer on Jagger's breakthrough film Performance, while Gordon's boss David Cammell, the brother of the movie's director Donald Cammell, was a co-producer.

        Milton A Poem.

4to. (277 x 218 mm). Original quarter brown morocco over marbled paper-covered boards, t.e.g., marbled paper-covered card slipcase; ff. [59], including 50 coloured facsimile plates printed by collotype in two colours and hand-coloured by the pochoir method and 1 monochrome plate reproducing the original preface; the spine of the volume evenly sunned, otherwise a very good copy. Edition limited to a total of 426 copies. This copy one of 380, numbered 273. Blake's penultimate illuminated book, the last being Jerusalem. The present facsimile was reproduced from the Rosenwald copy held at the Library of Congress, Washington, D.C., being the most complete of the four extant copies. In the commentary Geoffrey Keynes describes the main theme of the poem as 'an account of how Milton, realizing the errors he had committed during life, descended to Earth and entered into Blake. Communing intimately with Blake's mind, Milton achieves self-annihilation, so becoming the perfect man and saviour of the world.' Keynes further notes that 'The epic as a whole contains many passages of exceptional beauty and provides numerous clues useful for the elucidation of Blake's symbolism and philosophy.'

FIRST EDITIONS IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF MILGRAM'S TWO LANDMARK 'SMALL-WORLD PROBLEM' PAPERS & A COLLECTION OF SEVEN MORE SEMINAL PAPERS ON THE SMALL-WORLD PROBLEM - also known as six degrees of separation. "In 1967, social psychologist Stanley Milgram conducted a seminal experiment to test the hypothesis that scattered members of any large social network (here, the United States) could be connected to each other through short chains of intermediate acquaintances" (Levinson, Village, I, 1255). Milgram put it this way: "The simplest way of formulating the small-world problem is: Starting with any two people in the world, what is the probability that they know each other?" (Milgram, 62). To find out, he "mailed a passport-like packet to a few hundred randomly selected individuals in Nebraska and Kansas, explaining that the packet's final destination was one of two target recipients in the Boston area. Milgram instructed his subjects to send the packet… to someone whom they knew on a first-name basis - someone they thought was more likely to be acquainted with the target person than they were themselves… "His famous result, now enshrined in popular culture and sociology dogma, was that the average length of the resulting acquaintance chains was roughly six links, where the final member of the chain was the target itself. This result led to the phrase 'six degrees of separation'", [though Milgram never used it] and later Guare's play of the same name (Levinson). Two Granovetter papers build on Milgram and are among the most important in the social sciences. His 'Strength of Weak Ties' are pioneering, highly influential papers arguing that "In marketing, information science, or politics, weak ties enable reaching populations and audiences that are not accessible via strong ties" (Wikipedia). Granovetter concludes "that no strong tie is a bridge, and therefore "all bridges are weak ties" (Granovetter, 1363). Weak ties, he argues, "are more likely to link members of different groups in networks than strong ones. Weak ties connect different actors and consequently enable the flow of information" (Trost, Social Media, 17). Kochen and de Sola Pool formally and famously articulate "the mechanics of social networks and explore the mathematical consequences of these (including connectedness)" (Wikipedia). Their work "provided the intellectual impetus for a whole generation of students who designed and executed studies of the 'small-world'."  In 1998 Watts and Strogatz seminally document the best known family of small-world networks and posit the network model as a framework to study the small-world problem. Their work "provided compelling evidence that the small-world phenomenon is pervasive in a range of networks arising in nature and technology, and a fundamental ingredient in the evolution of the WWW" (Kleinberg, 1). Brabási and  Réka introduce an algorithm used to generate random, scale-free networks. Scale-free networks are often observed in natural as well as human created systems, including cellular networks, the WWW, Internet, and social networks. Kleinberg's 2000 paper rigorously quantifies the small-world network . Kleinberg first recognized that Milgram's small-world implicitly argues not only the presence of short paths between "individuals in social networks, but also that people seem to be good at finding those paths, an apparently simple observation that turns out to have profound implications for the structure of the networks" (Wikipedia). Lastly, the play Six Degrees of Separation is included for a bit of fun. DETAILS: All papers housed in individually-sized compartments in a handsome leather and cloth clamshell case. Kleinberg's paper is a bound extraction; Granovetter's second paper is bound and includes dust cover; Strogatz's paper is inscribed. All others are journal issues in original wraps. Mailing labels appear on most; a few are ex-libris; withal, the collection is in fine condition.

New York: Farrar, Straus & Giroux, 1967. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Pablo Neruda on the half title page in green ink. Small stain to the page edges, an excellent example in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Translated by Nathaniel Tarn. "The Heights of Machu Picchu" has been called Pablo Neruda's greatest contribution to poetry--a search for the "indestructible, imperishable life" in all things. Inspired by his journey to the ancient ruins, Neruda calls the lost Incan civilization to "rise up and be born," and also empowers the people of his time.
