        Andy Warhol's Index (Book)

Random House, New York 1967 - A handsome copy of the 1967 stated 1st printing of this seminal artist's book, cited by both Andrew Roth and Martin Parr as among the most influential photo/artists' books of the century. This copy, while boasting a very bright front cover (with crisp, completely unflecked silver lettering along the spine), is missing 2 of its 10 original multiples/objects. Included are: the castle pop-up; the red accordion (which doesn't squeak); the bi-plane pop-up; "The Chelsea Girls" paper wheel (unattached); the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed record (attached); the double-image rainbow nose; the Hunt's Tomato Paste pop-up; and the balloon (inevitably smushed down, as in virtually every copy). Missing are: the 12-sided "sphere" and the 8 rectangular tear-offs. Nonetheless, a respectable, solid copy, and in the much less common hardback. Tight and VG to VG+, with light scuffing and soiling to the rear panel. The page opposite the Velvet Underground/Lou Reed record was roughly handled and does show some minor tearing; otherwise, the interior is very clean. (From the title page: "with the assistance of Stephen Shore, Paul Morrissey, Ondine, Nico -- several photographs by Nat Finkelstein, Factory Fotos by Billy Name").         In the Heat of the Night (Collection of five original title card maquettes)

The Mirisch Corporation / United Artists, Beverly Hills, CA 1967 - Collection of five original title card maquettes for the 1967 film hand lettered by Harold Adler. Based on the 1965 novel by John Ball.Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "In the Heat of the Night," his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "Justine" (1969), and "Finian's Rainbow" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City.A film as much, if not more so, about racial tensions in the Civil Rights era South as it is about a murder investigation, "In the Heat of the Night" won five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor (Rod Steiger), and Best Adapted Screenplay. 22 x 13.25 inches. White lettering on black ink, tipped onto black board. Near Fine condition overall, with some light rubbing to the boards, some spotting, and minor fraying at the corners.         Finian's Rainbow (Archive of original title card maquettes for the 1967 film)

Warner Brothers / Seven Arts, Burbank 1967 - Four title card maquettes hand lettered by Harold Adler for the 1967 film. Based on the 1947 musical by E.Y. Harburg and Fred Saidy, who also adapted the story to the screen. The four maquettes in this archive are stylistically similar, but quite different from the titles used in the finished film.Harold Adler was a calligrapher who created hand lettered titles on over 100 films, worked frequently with Alfred Hitchcock, and was a favorite of legendary title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. In addition to "Finian's Rainbow" his credits include "Comanche!" (1956), "The Man with the Golden Arm" (1955), "The Seven Year Itch" (1955), "Carmen Jones" (1954), "Psycho" (1960), "The Birds" (1963), "In the Heat of the Night" (1967), and "Justine" (1969). In 2012, an exhibition of Adler's work was organized by noted typographer and design historian Jill Bell at the American Advertising Federation, Kansas City.Warner Brothers optioned the musical shortly after its premiere in 1947, but Harburg and Saidy were unwilling to tone down the racial satire to fit studio demands, holding out until the option was about to expire and Warner agreed to a script with only minimal changes twenty years later. Coppola was an odd choice to direct, with his realistic, New Hollywood Cinema approach to filmmaking at odds with the fantastical nature of the material, and the results were decidedly mixed, despite a widely-loved performance by Clark. Each study 16 x 8 inches, containing a reproduction of a color landscape photograph mounted on board and matted in black, with two plastic overlays - one with white lettering, and the second with color embellishments to the letters attached to the top of the mats with tape. Very Good plus condition overall. Hirschhorn, p. 392.

Autograph Letter Signed to fellow suffragette Emily Pierson regarding the death of Spencer Tracy

N.p., N.p. 1967 - An intimate and extremely moving autograph letter signed from Katharine Hepburn to longtime fellow suffragette Emily Pierson, regarding the death of Spencer Tracy. Equally as touching as the content is the fact that the letter is executed on Tracy's personal stationery, with Hepburn's St. Ives Street address in Los Angeles added by hand at the top right corner. An amazing piece, a triumvural association relating to the most famous cinematic love affair of the twentieth century and, more subtly, to Hepburn's long association with the women's suffrage movement in the United States.Though undated the letter was clearly written within days of Tracy's passing on June 10, 1967. After a decades-long and much publicized love affair with Hepburn, Tracy (who never divorced his wife) spent the majority of the final two years of his life with his great love. Hepburn describes in some detail her last moments with him, sentiments she would later echo in her autobiography: "It was a massive coronary at 3AM. I'm sure he'd had no feelings of anything weird because he did not ring my bell. I heard him go down the hall to [the] kitchen. I got up to keep him--I knew he was going to make a cup of tea, [and] I always left a kettle on the boil. And as I put my hand on the kitchen door I heard a sigh and a crash, and across the room I went. He was totally dead--a great exit, the best--and Spence was tired out. I used to wonder how in hell that darling heart kept beating. I don't know what I'll do, but I'll let you know. . Kath."9.5 x 6.25 inches. Single leaf, executed on recto and verso in black ink. Near Fine. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

The Day We Got Drunk On Cake

Bodley Head, 1967. 1st edition. Hardcover. Fine blue boards, very nice clean endpapers and pages. The very near fine dustjacket is fractionally browned at the spine, where there are a few small bits of foxing by the author's name, and is slightly rubbed to the rear panel, otherwise it looks really well and is not price-clipped. A very nice copy, in essence, of the first printing of the author's fourth book, his first collection of short stories, and quite scarce today.
