WOLF TO THE SLAUGHTER (superb, near-fine dust-jacket)

London: John Long 1967 - A clean and tidy, little-used ex-library copy in a beautifully preserved jacket. Very good (front free endpaper expertly replaced with matching stock; a few foxing spots to rear free endpaper; erasure mark to copyright page) in a superb, near fine dust-wrapper. The first example I've handled in 20+ years of collecting and dealing, and the best wrapper I have seen. My own experience concurs with the generally held opinion that this is the author's scarcest title. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Catalogue Christiane: Bibliographie Supertemporelle du Mouvement Lettriste

Artist's book as catalogue, consisting of four pages of mimeographed introductory text, followed by approximately 100 blank pages. Not illustrated. Oblong 8vo. Rigid cardboard two-ring binder with printed label to spine, some slight warping of covers, two indentations or small tears to front cover where rings have pushed through, some minor soiling to label. Paris (Centre de Creativite) 1967. Limited edition of 300 copies total, and one of 50 copies numbered and signed by Guymer and Lemaître on the label. Christiane Guymer and Maurice Lemaître were brother and sister, and Guymer spent her life trying to increase the visibility and name recognition of Lemaître and the Lettrists. On her own, Guymer produced a film and a few other works of art. Guymer and Lemaître created the Catalogue Christiane together, as a bibliography of the Lettrist movement. Later editions of or supplements to this catalogue listed the relevant publications on the pages which are blank in this edition.

        The Best of Moe: Summations

Trial Lawyers Service Company 1967 - B0006BPVXO 1967 first edition, Trial Lawyers Service Co. (Belleville, Illinois), 5 7/8 x 8 5/8 inches tall grey cloth hardcover, no dust jacket, gilt design and lettering to front cover and spine, 237 pp. Orange stains to gilt image of Levine on front cover. Slight soiling and mild to moderate rubbing and edgewear to covers. Otherwise, a very good copy - clean, bright and unmarked - of this scarce first edition of one of renowned trial lawyer Moe Levine's most popular books, on closing argument at trial. ~SP37~ Moe Levine (1906-1974) is regarded as one of the greatest legal minds of the twentieth Century, and revolutionized the art of presenting a case at trial. His interests in both religion, science, and history allowed him to speak the jury on numerous levels. He is described as being able to quote scripture like Billy Graham on one day and then use the logic of Clarence Darrow the following day. He developed the 'whole man theory,' and successfully argued to many juries that you cannot injure part of a man, but rather that you injure the whole person. He argued that pain destroys a life, and that any loss of life, loss of mobility, or loss of ability, no matter how insignificant it may seem to society, has an impact to the people who loved that person. He had significant interest in the science of medicine, and had great skill at interpreting those details to juries. Contents: Precepts of Persuasion; Death of an Alcoholic; Damages for Burns, Product Liability; Thesis of the Whole Man; Psychological Consequences of Minor Injuries to a Child; Disturbance of Marital Relationship, a Summation Against Adversary Harrassment; Damages for Destruction of Dignity and Pride; Previous Illness, Difficult Liability; Unemployability, Not Disability; Aggravation of Prior Condition, Impairment of Enjoyment of Living; Economic Replacement, Loss of Mother; Impairment of Intellect, Child Darting Case; An Evaluation of Pain, Back Injury; Damages from Second Injury Resulting from First; The Psychology of the Closing Argument.         Rosemary's Baby

New York: Random House, 1967. Fine/Near Fine. First edition. Fine in near fine dustwrapper with a creased tear on the front panel and a couple of small tears. Inscribed by Levin to Tony Award-winning actress Marian Seldes: "11/7/78. To Marian Seldes, Who waited eleven years to be done in by me. With love, Ira Levin." Seldes was the leading lady in Levin's Tony Award-winning play Deathtrap (in which she is killed, thus explaining the inscription). Seldes has made a couple of tiny pencil notes indicating this was signed at the theatre at a performance of Deathtrap. Laid in is an advertisement from a trade publication lauding the acting of Ruth Gordon in Rosemary's Baby. After Gordon's death, Seldes married Gordon's widowed husband, the author and director Garson Kanin. Marian Seldes won a Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in 1967 for her appearance in Edward Albee's A Delicate Balance, as well as receiving four more nominations in acting categories (including for Deathtrap). In 2010 she won a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theatre.A nice copy of this gothic horror story, source for a memorable Roman Polanski film with Mia Farrow, John Cassavetes, and Ruth Gordon, who won an Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, complete with an excellent association.

Princeton: Princeton University Press, 1967. First edition of this landmark work. Octavo, original green cloth. Signed by Edward O. Wilson on the title page, who has drawn a picture of an ant. Errata slip to the endpaper, near fine in a near fine dust jacket with a touch of wear. "MacArthur and Wilson's is arguably the most influential book in biogeography in the last hundred years.         Atlas Shrugged.

Random House, New York 1967 - Tenth Anniversary edition; one of 2000 numbered and signed copies. Octavo, original blue cloth. From the library of Barbara Branden. Signed by Ayn Rand and additionally signed by Barbara and Nathaniel Branden. While living in New York during the early 1950s, Barbara and her future husband, Nathaniel Branden, befriended Rand and her husband Frank O'Connor. Not only would the couple go on to become major proponents of Objectivism, establishing the Nathaniel Branden Institute in 1958, with Barbara serving as Rand's assistant, but their personal lives would be dramatically intertwined with Rands. Begrudgingly sanctioned by both Barbara and Frank, Nathaniel began an affair with Ayn in 1954. The secret couple had a very public break in 1968, almost certainly due to Branden's affair with actress Scott. Fine in the original slipcase, with the original acetate. An exceptional association copy. The theme of Atlas Shrugged, as Rand described it, is "the role of man's mind in existence." The book explores a number of philosophical themes that Rand would subsequently develop into the philosophy of Objectivism. By 1984 more than five million copies of Atlas Shrugged had been sold, and in a 1991 Library of Congress survey Americans named it second only to the Bible as the book that had most influenced their lives.
