Tolkien, J.R.R
George Allen and Unwin Ltd, London, 1966. Octavo, 3 volumes, bound in full morocco by Sangorski and Sutcliffe, gilt titles and tooling to the spines, gilt ruled to the front and rear panels, raised bands, all edges gilt, inner dentelles, marbled endpapers, maps present. In near fine condition. An exceptional set. The Lord of the Rings began as a sequel to Tolkien's 1937 children's fantasy novel The Hobbit, but eventually developed into a much larger work. It was written in stages between 1937 and 1949, much of it during World War II in letters to his son, "and finally, having polished it to his own satisfaction, published it as a trilogy from 1954 to 1955, a volume at a time, impatiently awaited by a growing audience It is considered] one of this century’s lasting contributions to that borderland of literature between youth and age It seems destined to become this century’s contribution to that select list of books which continue through the ages to be read by children and adults with almost equal pleasure." (Eyre, 134-35) It has went on to become the third best selling novel of all-time with 150 million copies sold. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Paul Scott
UK: Heinemann, 1966. A hint of age toning, but free of other condition issues. A beaut! DJ is original, unchipped, but price-clipped. This powerful novel by Paul Scott narrates the struggles encountered by the Raj and Indians at a time of dwindling fortunes for Britain in the middle of World War II. The book, "The Jewel In The Crown," is from a private collection stored in a smoke-free environment and appears to have been lightly read. Rarely found signed by an author who was reluctant to do so. FOUCAULT, MICHEL. - [CHANGING 20TH CENTURY CULTURAL HISTORY]
Gallimard, (1966). 8vo. Orig. wrappers with red and green lettering. A vertical crease down the middle of the spine and slight bumping to capitals, otherwise an excellent, clean and fresh copy. Internally near mint. 400, (8) pp. + folding plate at the end. Service de presse- (i.e. review-) copy, with the original review prospectus dated "Mars 1966" laid in. Inscribed on front free end-paper. ¶ A magnifiecent presentation-copy for Maurice Rat, signed by Foucault, of one of the very scarce review-copies ("S.P." perforation stamp to the bottom of back wrapper and last four leaves) of the uncommon first edition (printed March 21st, 1966). Foucalt's magnum opus, "The order of Things", constitutes a milestone in modern philosophy and sociology. It fundamentally changed the idea of cultural history and secured Foucault the reputation as one of the main philosophers and sociologists of the late 20th century. The presentation-inscription on the front free end-paper reads as thus: "Pour Monsieur et Madame Rat/ en témoignage de/ ma votre reconnaissance/ MF".Maurice Rat (1891-1969) was a renowned philologist and translator of classical works. He was also the editor of the standard-edition of Montaigne's works and was awarded the Amic price from the French Academy in 1959.

J.R.R. Tolkien
London: Allen and Unwin. used with wear and tear. First printings of the 1966 2nd edition. The photos say it all. True fine book and jackets. A couple of minor nicks to jackets, gift inscription to TT and RotK. TT is clipped, jackets look like it came off the printing press yesterday. We have never seen a nicer condition set! Plus- we are including a 1966 original Allen & Unwin advertisement flyer for this set. A rare collectors item in itself! Of the second edition revised after the huge popularity of the 1965 paperback editions, the 1st and 2nd printing (1966 and 1967) are most important to a collection. Professor Tolkien requested numerous corrections for the second edition, many of which did not happen until the 2nd 1967 printing. Thereafter print runs were bigger and people knew to take care of the books as Tolkien fame really spread, thus later printings are more numerous and in near fine condition. The 1st and 2nd printing of the second edition are the most difficult to find in good condition. There is not in our opinion much value difference between the late first editions, 1965 and 1966 and the first second editions assuming very good condition. Print runs sizes are fairly linear as are availability. Its perceived the "first editions" are automatically more valuable, not after 16 printings I'm afraid.
