        Karate Goju-ryu by The Cat

      International Karate-Do Goju-kai, Tokyo, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Poor. 296 pages (complete). A VERY, VERY RARE copy of this autobiography of the great Gogen Yamaguchi, "The Cat". Yamaguchi was a household name for many, many years, in Japan and any place where Karate was practiced. The dustjacket is much worn, torn, scuffed. It is however, intact and concerted. The cover is glorious. It is covered with blue woven cloth, with gilt Japanese script. Other than very light shelving wear to the corners, the covers are very appealing. The front and end papers are of woven paper. These are neat and tidy. The early pages have some storage rubbing, wear and marks. Beyond these the pages are comfortable, clean, clear, benevolent, diligent, personal, very pleasing. A happy copy. fk

      New York, [Simon & Schuster,] 1945 [1959, 1966] - Single leaf folded for mailing with the envelope. Octavos. Original cloth, with the dust jackets. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Letter very lightly marked, books very good in torn and creased dust jackets. First editions, first printings. Each book bearing the composer's signed presentation inscription, "To Renee who taught me much about the Joy of teaching Love Lenny", "For Renee with love & every good warm wish for '67 - Lenny B". The recipient was Bernstein's former teacher at the Curtis Institute where Longy taught ear training. Bernstein studied score reading under her tutelage. The letter was written just 5 days after the opening of his first Broadway musical, On The Town. "Well the show has opened and is a phenomenal hit, in spite of it all. The reviews are fantastic raves, especially the Times and PM, and the Hollywood Reporter which called it the greatest musical ever produced! It's thrilling, and I would be a rich man, except that whatever money I get goes back to Uncle Samovitch for taxes." He concludes that he is "struggling to get back into my beard (long-hair) and study Brahms First for Pittsburgh next week" signing off with "Love and thanks again Lenny Spookietchka".         Vivien Leigh writes about plays and looking for a role in London theatre that would suit her

      New York, New York, May 7, 1966. 5.75" x 7.75". "Single page TLS on off-white stationary, 5.75"" x 7.75"". Dated May 7, 1966, and signed by Vivien Leigh as ""Vivien Leigh"". Right and lower edges slightly discolored, else near fine condition.Vivien Leigh writes a letter to her close friend, Joyce Huddart. One can project that she perhaps met Joyce during her period acting in the theaters of London. Joyce was head of wardrobe and also participated as stage crew for the London Tower Theatre, and the two corresponded regularly over a period of many years. Vivien Leigh's ultimate passion was for roles in theater. She was quoted as saying, ""I'm not a film star – I'm an actress. Being a film star – just a film star – is such a false life, lived for fake values and for publicity. Actresses go on for a long time and there are always marvelous parts to play.""This letter to Joyce was written during the run of Ivanov, Vivien's last stage play appearance. The revival of this play would open May 3rd, 1966 at the Shubert Theatre in New York City and run for only 47 performances. However the letter reflects Vivien's love of acting, along with her continued concerns about how she is reviewed by the media. But in addition, the letter also demonstrated both her tenacity to continue to perform, along with her reflection of her wish to return to England with her comments ""We have been having wonderful audiences here in New York, and the reviews, except for the Times, have been very fine indeed, so we are hoping for a good season… I am reading plays and trust that I shall find one that I shall do at home"". However within a year, Leigh's intermittent battle with tuberculous returned and she passed away on July 7, 1967A poignant wonderful signed letter to her personal friend, reflecting her strong constitution and passion for her career."

      Palermo 1966 - Luigi Sanfilippo's catalog of Ellington's works, inscribed by the author to Ellington on the half-title: "Friendly a little gift to the great E. K. Ellington." With Sanfilippo's original business card. Few scholars began to work on Ellington's huge musical and cultural output until after his death, but Sanfilippo had begun the mammoth task of cataloging his recorded music in the 1960's. As he writes in the preface, there was a very positive response to his work: "The surprising success of the 1 edition of this book, and above all, the warm encouragement by collectors troughout [sic] the world, have made me decide, after barely one year, to publish a second edition of my modest work." 112 pp. Burgundy leather, stamped in gold; moire endpapers. Vostells Plan eines "Erlebniszeitraums, der mit den Kommunikationsmitteln und ihren Informationen ein viusel-akustisches Laboratorium bildet, in dem die Medien untereinander gemischt gespeichert verwischt dé-coll/agiert werden können", hat sich vollkommen bestätigt. Was fehlt ist das elektronische Lesegerät .statt Bücher. Der Begleitbrief mit genauen Angaben zur Produktion und Gestaltung des Textes und der Bestellung von zusätzlichen 1000 Exemplaren des Textes für die Buchmesse. Vostell schlägt Bernhard Höke vor, eine Serie mit Statt-Manifesten zu veröffentlichen. In et1 war von Vostell bereits "Statt-Bomben" erschienen. Die nächsten 2 Manifeste werden "statt Akademien" und "statt Architektur" heissen.

R., den er u. a. um Rat in Fragen eines Fernsehspiels (wohl "Die Begnadigung", 1968) ersucht: "Wie Sie aus jener Zeitungsnotiz erfahren haben, handelt es sich grundsätzlich um den Fall Halsmann - doch hat Halsmann sich inzwischen nach mehreren Jahrzehnten zum erstenmal wieder an mich gewandt mit der verzweifelten Bitte, ihn gegen eine Identifikation mit dem Protagonisten unseres Fernsehspiels zu schützen, es würde sonst für ihn und seine jetzigen Lebensumstände katastrophale Folgen haben. Ich habe dementsprechend alles ihn persönlich Betreffende verfremdet - hinlänglich verfremdet, hoffe ich - bei voller Beibehaltung der Tatbestände - hoffend, daß es nur mehr ganz wenige Menschen gibt, die sich an diesen Fall tatsächlich erinnern. II. 1967). - Der jüdische Zahnarztsohn Philippe Halsmann war 1928 in zwei spektakulären Indizienprozessen des Mordes an seinen Vater schuldig gesprochen, zwei Jahre später allerdings begnadigt worden. Anschließend nach Paris ziehend und ein Photostudio eröffnend, wurde Halsmann als Prominentenphotograph in den USA (wohin er 1940 vor den Nationalsozialisten geflohen war) berühmt. Der deutsche Journalist Martin Pollack recherchierte knapp ein dreiviertel Jahrhundert später akribisch die verworrenen Umstände von Todesfall und Prozeß, mußte aber die Frage, ob Philippe Halsmann - der zeitlebens kein Wort über den Prozeß verlor - wirklich der Täter war, gleichfalls unbeantwortet lassen. - Auf Briefpapier mit gedr. bzw. ms.       London: Jonathan Cape. 1966. An UNCORRECTED PROOF copy of the first edition. In printed green wrappers and the pictorial dust-jacket which differs considerably to the published version. The text features some significant differences within the preliminaries leaves, plus literals and minor variations throughout. A very good copy of the book with some toning to edges and extremities, in a fine copy of the jacket (toned at spine). I would suggest the book was read/reviewed away from the oversized wrapper, which shows little signs of wear. An attractive copy. One of 350 copies only- this is a much smaller print run than the previous five James Bond titles in proof-form. Gilbert A14a.

Contemporary French sprinkled calf, gold-tooled spine and board edges. The boards are 5 mm thick, but each has a large panel hollowed out on the inside, perhaps to hold astronomical aids of some sort.

      - Armitage, Edmond Halley, (1966), pp. 31-32; Cook, Edmond Halley: charting the heavens and the seas (1997), p. 78; DSB VI, pp. 67-72. Rare first French edition of the first major work by Edmond Halley (1656-1742) translated from the Latin by the astronomer Augustin Royer. A precocious child, Halley became assistant to John Flamsteed at the Royal Observatory in Greenwich in 1675. In 1676 he travelled to the remote South Atlantic island Saint Helena in order to set up an observatory where he set up a more than 7-metre telescope and a sextant with a radius of more than 1 1/2 metres (with telescopic sights) on the top of a 680 metre hill there and map the stars of the southern hemisphere, still not well known in Europe. He also observed a transit of Mercury. On his return to England in 1678, at the age of 22, he published his important observations in the first (Latin) edition of the present work, Catalogus stellarum Australium, sive supplementum catalogi Tychonici, London, 1678. It was a pioneering work not only because it covered the southern hemisphere, but because it was the first printed star catalogue to give telescopically determined positions. According to Cook, the present French translation was published as a supplement to Royer's Carte du ciel, also published in 1679, which covered only stars observable from Europe. Also in 1678 Halley drew up a planisphere, and the Royal Society, impressed by both, elected him as a fellow. Halley, astronomer, geophysicist, mathematician, meteorologist and physicist, was one of the most innovative thinkers of his day, bringing theory and practice together. He is best known as an early adherent of Newton's idea that comets following the same laws as planets, and he correctly concluded that at least some followed elliptical orbits, while Newton had favoured parabolic paths. By computing their orbits from contemporary and historical accounts he successfully predicted the 1758 return of the one now known as Halley's comet.Although Cook calls for an accompanying planisphere, it and a plate with four figures rarely appear as part of the book, whether in the Latin or the French edition, and the book itself does not call for either. They appear to have been separate publications, sometimes found accompanying the book. The hollowed boards of the present binding may have been intended to hold them as loosely inserted folded additions (there is no sign that anything was ever attached). The Earl of Maccelsfield's copy, with his 1860 armorial bookplate, and his embossed stamp on the title-page and 2 following leaves. The second Earl of the second creation, George Parker (ca. 1697-1764) was a leading astronomer and president of the Royal Society. In good condition. With a chip at the top of spine and the hinges worn. First French edition of Edmond Halley's first major work.

        Program for the Second Piatigorsky Cup: International Grandmaster Chess Tournament July 17 to August 15, 1966

      Santa Monica: Piatigorsky Cup Committee, 1966. 16 unpaginated pages with facsimiles, photographs. Octavo (8 1/2" x 5 3/4") bound in original publisher's spiral spine with red wrappers and cup in silver and black to cover. Signed by all participants next to their photograph in the program along with a short biography of each contestant. (Not listed in Betts) First edition.After the success of the First Piatigorsky Cup (1963), the second was organized by Gregor and Jacqueline Piatigorsky in Santa Monica, California at the Miramar Hotel from July 17-August 15, 1966, with Isaac Kashdan directing. The stellar field included the current and next two World Champions plus a slew of Candidates-level grandmasters in a double-round robin event: Jan Hein Donner, Robert James Fischer, Borislav Ivkov, Bent Larsen, Miguel Najdorf, Tigran Vartanovich Petrosian, Lajos Portisch, Samuel Reshevsky, Boris Spassky, Wolfgang Unzicker. The Piatigorskys invited both Reshevsky and Fischer in spite of the Fischer - Reshevsky (1961) match fiasco. The 1966 Piatigorsky Cup tournament ranks as on of the strongest chess competitions ever held on American soil. It is on a short list that includes New York 1924, New York 1927, and the Sinquefield Cups. Held during the Cold War, when tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union were high, the Piatigorsky Cup represented a triumph of diplomacy. The tournament was a double-robin competition in which all participants played each other twice. The Piatigorskys produced an elegant trophy for the event that featured a "love cup" designed by Tiffany & Company as it centerpiece. With Bobby Fischer participating in the event, ensured that the top American talent of the period was represented in the competition. It also meant that the field of ten players contained one World Champion (Petrosian) as well as two future ones (Bobby Fischer and Boris Spassky). After a strong start followed by a disastrous performance mid-tournament Fischer mounted an amazing comeback to tie with the tournament leader Spassky, in the standings. Their game in the penultimate round attracted a record 900 spectators and served as a preview of the excitement the two would generate six years later in their epic 1972 World Chess Championship match in Reykjavik, Iceland. The two played a hard fought draw. Spassky then won his lat game against Jan Hein Donner, who was at the bottom of the standings, while Fisher's game against Petrosian ended in a draw. Spassky achieved a narrow victory over Fischer, winning $5000.Condition:Some of the combs in the spiral binder chipped off else a near fine copy.

      N.p.: N.p., 1966. Draft script for an unproduced film. Copy belonging to crew member James H. Ware. Ware was a major presence in British and American cinema, best known for his work on "Beat the Devil" (1953), "Room at the Top" (1959), "Our Man in Havana" (1959), "Charade" (1963), and "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" (1965). A pet project of Australian actor Rod Taylor, who struggled from 1964 until 1974 to get this film made, though was eventually completely unsuccessful, this film is an Australian outback story based on the short story "The Skedule" by Helen H. Wilson. A prim and proper English lady and an Aussie find themselves traveling together through the Outback, where a romance soon develops, like "African Queen" but lacking a war. Set in Australia. Green blank wrappers with die cut title window in the British style. Title page present, dated July 1966, with credits for screenwriter Ted Willis, and author Helen H. Wilson. 144 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 131. Mechanically reproduced, with pink and yellow revision pages throughout, dated variously between September 24, 1967 and September 26, 1967. Pages Very Good plus, wrapper Very Good plus bound with two gold brads.
