La Retour de la Colonne Durutti

4 pp. Situationist comic by Bertrand, a pro-Situationist student, given away at Strasbourg University during a student protest in October 1966, containing cartoons, photos, and reproduced artworks which describe the election of members of the Association Fédérative Générale des Étudiants de Strasbourg to the student union, and named after the Spanish anarchist Buenaventura Durruti. Profusely illustrated. Tabloid. Orig. illustrated self-wrpps. Strasbourg (Association Fédérative Générale des Étudiants de Strasbourg) 1966. This provocative comic was published and distributed with the help of a number of students sympathetic to Situationist ideas. They illegally used funds from the Association Fédérative Générale des Étudiants de Strasbourg to print copies of the comic, along with 10,000 copies of the pamphlet The Poverty of Student Life, written by Mustapha Khayati. These actions, together with the protests across campus, prompted a court order to cease the activities of the AFGES. Extremely scarce; as of February 2017, WorldCat locates only two holdings in North America.

The Nun [La Religieuse] (Original French poster for the 1966 film)

N.p.: Rome Paris Films, 1966. Vintage French Moyenne poster for the 1966 film. Nominated for a Palme d'Or at the 1966 Cannes Film Festival. A flurry of controversy surrounded the production and release of Rivette's film. Upon facing pressure from the French Catholic Church regarding its critical religious and sexual content, the new Minister of Information, Yvon Bourges, banned its release. As a result, a massive campaign was launched in its defense, eventually leading to the ban being lifted. The story is based on Denis Diderot's eighteenth century novel of the same title. It was conceived as a practical joke, devised by Diderot, to persuade the Marquis de Croismare to return to Paris. He assumed the identity of a desperate young woman forced into a convent and wrote elaborate letters to the Marquis, beseeching him to help her. Eventually, Diderot compiled the letters and built on them to create his novel. Like the film, it too faced censorship, and was not officially published until after the writer's death. Shot on location in Villeneuve-les-Avignon, Gard, France. 23.5 x 31 inches (60 x 80 cm), folded. Near Fine with two holograph ink and graphite notations to the verso and light edgewear. Vogel, Film as a Subversive Art.

        Death of a Naturalist [Signed]

New York: Oxford University Press, 1966. First American Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine-. First Printing of the poet's critically acclaimed first commercially published work (preceded by the privately printed pamphlet, Eleven Poems, in 1965), one of only 1,000 copies (bound from sheets purchased from Faber and Faber, Heaney's London publisher). Tall, slim 8vo: 57,[1]pp. Publisher's aquamarine cloth, spine lettered in gilt; typographic dust jacket printed in salmon-pink and olive, lettered black, priced $3.75. Signed by Heaney on the title page. A stunning copy, tight, square and likely unread; about Fine jacket, fresh and bright, with usual fading to the fugitive salmon-pink on bottom half of spine panel but all lettering undiminished. Winner of the Somerset Maugham Award, the Cholmondeley Award, the Eric Gregory Award, and the Geoffrey Faber Memorial Prize. Heaney received the Nobel Prize in literature, in 1995. Brandes & Durkan A2b. A collection of 34 poems largely concerned with rural life, often in the context of childhood experiences and the formulation of adult identities and intimate relationships. It includes "Digging," "Death of a Naturalist," "Blackberry-Picking," among others. "Seamus Heaney has been, for good or ill, internationally the most prominent and the most popular Irish poet of the latter part of the twentieth century and the first part of the twenty-first. . . . His first two collections, Death of a Naturalist and Door into the Dark [a signed copy of which we also have on offer], largely written before the renewed outbreak of the so-called 'Troubles' in 1968, show Heaney alerting his audience to the violent history of colonisation on his native ground, but preoccupied also by the rhythms of life in a rural setting remembered from his childhood. He also, in a Wordsworthian manner, focuses upon the sources and resources of his own poetic voice and power." (Literary Encyclopedia) N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition, with dust jackets carefully preserved in archival, removable polypropylene sleeves. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

        Hieronymus Bosch

1966. First Edition . Signed. (WYETH, Andrew) (BOSCH, Hieronymus) TOLNAY, Charles de. Hieronymus Bosch. New York: Reynal and Company, in association with William Morrow, (1966). Folio ( by inches), original white cloth, original dust jacket. $3200.First American edition of this lavishly illustrated tribute to the startlingly unconventional 15th-century Dutch artist. This copy presented by American artist Andrew Wyeth to his aunt and cousin, inscribed by him on the front free endpaper: “Dearest Miss Herr and her lovely daughter Mary—This is a world I love and I think you will also—All my love, Andy.”Andrew WyethÂ’s aunt Elizabeth Bockius Sargent and her daughter Mary lived in Lancaster County, and Wyeth would visit them with some regularity. From correspondence it would appear that Andrew Wyeth at times referred to his Aunt Elizabeth as “Miss Herr,” jokingly referring to himself as “Mr. Herr” or “H. Herr.” WyethÂ’s family was related to the descendants of Hans Herr of the Hans Herr House, a famous 1719 Lancaster County farmhouse, now part of a museum. Wyeth painted the Herr House, and the sale of reproductions of this painting helped finance renovations to the building, which is now part of a museum complex devoted to the Mennonite heritage of Lancaster County. Preceded by the German first edition of 1965. Mild wear to spine head only of price-clipped dust jacket. Near-fine, with a nice artistic association.

        Autograph letter signed.

East Hampton, NY, [19 May 1966]. - Large 4to. ¾ p. With autograph envelope. To the Greenwich Village bohemian Helen Elliott: "I did not see Hans Namuth this week-end, . and I would not want to loose [!] the chance . I mean not to be in your book, . I would certainly regret it alright . With names, with people like Camus, Dostoyesky [!] W. C. Fields . It is very nice of you to remember me, . and it will be nice to see you again [.]". - Helen Elliott (1925-1990) is best known for her love affair with Lucien Carr and friendships with Jack Kerouac and Alan Ginsberg. She has been identified as the characters Ruth Erickson in Kerouac's "Desolation Angels" and Eileen Weber in the expanded edition of his "Book of Dreams". - German-born American photographer Hans Namuth (1915-1990) was known for his portraits of architects and artists, notably a series of photographs depicting Jackson Pollock at work in his Long Island studio, which are reputed to have precipitated a change in Pollock’s artistic style. Throughout the 1950s and 1960s, Namuth photographed de Kooning and his work, most notably, his "Reclining Man", and chronicled his studio’s construction in Long Island’s East Hampton artist colony. - Written in blue ink on a folded sheet of lined yellow legal notepaper.

Execution of Stepan Razin, opus 119

1966. First Edition . Signed. SHOSTAKOVICH, Dmitri. Op. 119. The Execution of Stepan Razin. Poem for Bass, Chorus, and Symphony Orchestra. Moscow: State Music Publishers, 1966. Quarto, original printed wrappers. $4500.First edition of the piano vocal score, boldly inscribed by Shostakovich on the title page in Russian in 1969.“The liberalizing trend in Soviet culture reached a highpoint in 1962. Shostakovich became interested in the courageous poetry of Evtushenko and selected five of his poems for the Symphony no. 13Â… Shostakovich and Evtushenko collaborated on another important work, the cantata KaznÂ’ Stepna Razina (‘The Execution of Stepan RazinÂ’) for bass solo, mixed chorus and orchestra” (New Grove 17: 270). The Moscow Philharmonic Orchestra and the Choral Capella of the Russian Republic first performed Opus 119 on December 28th, 1964. Contemporary critics placed “the work firmly in the continuum of the distinctive tradition of Russian folk drama–with conspicuous homage to Musorgsky–as well as in clear relation to the composerÂ’s recent historical and vocal-symphonic interest. In November 1968, nearly four years after its premiere, The Execution of Stepan Razin was awarded a State Prize” (Fay, 244-245). Title pages in Russian and English. Interior fine.       1966. (NASA). Collage of lunar photographs. No place: No publisher [NASA?], circa 1966. Twenty-five black-and-white photographic prints measuring 7-1/2 by 8 inches each, mounted in a collage of five rows, matted and framed, entire piece measures 48 by 48 inches. $8500.Large and compelling collage of 25 vintage lunar photographs, offering detailed views of the MoonÂ’s cratered surface, handsomely framed.""The lunar surface,"" wrote astronomer Carl Sagan, ""offers eloquent testimony of a previous age of the destruction of worlds, now billions of years gone."" The 25 black-and-white photographs in this collage provide detailed views of that bleak, beautiful landscape. They probably date from the mid- to late-1960s, when NASA was scouting suitable Apollo landing sites. Among the impact craters and ""seas"" (plains of solidified lava) visible in natural and dramatic chiaroscuro is the Sea of Tranquility, where Neil Armstrong took his ""small step for manÂ… [and] giant leap for mankind"" on July 20, 1969. A fascinating framed piece in fine condition.

        Haggadah for Passover

1966. First Edition . Signed. (HAGGADAH) SHAHN, Ben. Haggadah for Passover. Paris: Trianon Press, (1966). Large folio (13 by 17 inches), unsewn as issued, original glassine wrappers, original clasped parchment box. $6500.Beautiful large limited folio Passover Haggadah, number 92 of only 228 copies (out of a total edition of 292) on Arches Vergé paper, illustrated by Ben Shahn with 21 color pictorial borders and line drawings and an additional beautiful double-page color lithograph also signed by him.Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn executed many of the illustrations for this Haggadah around 1930, while working on a pictorial representation of the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. Like those for his secular works, Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression, a theme central to the story of Passover. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings, which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum, incorporating them into this extraordinary Haggadah. Shahn's year-long visit to Djerba, off the Tunisian coast, and his masterful calligraphy lend this Haggadah an oriental feel. Text in Hebrew and English. Box with usual light toning. A beautiful signed copy in fine condition.

        11:02 Nagasaki

1966. First Edition . TOMATSU, Shomei. 11:02 Nagasaki. Tokyo: Shashin Dojinsha, 1966. Square octavo, original white paper boards, original cardboard slipcase. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.First edition of this important look at Nagasaki, with 119 black-and-white photogravure plates depicting the effect of the atom bomb. This is the first photobook by Tomatsu, a founding member of the avant-garde photographers’ group Vivo and the leading figure in a generation of “angry young men who sought to take photography to the absolute limits” (Parr & Badger I:271). In 1960, the Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs asked Tomatsu to take photos of Nagasaki and the bomb’s aftereffects. Titled after the time of the bomb’s explosion, this work has had great influence on the development of Japanese photography. The “ultra-fine sensitivity towards the subject and the deep sense of detachment which is to be found in these photographs may, perhaps, be considered as the culmination of modern Japanese photography that had first appeared in the 1930s. In particular, an approach which consisted of transforming everyday subjects into powerful symbolic images was brought to perfection by Tomatsu. His photographs provide a powerful incentive to confront social reality, and his consistent openness towards others, through the medium of photography, means that he exercised a great influence on young photographers” (Frizot, 691). The text by Motoi Tamaki and interviews with survivors is in Japanese. Open Book, 226. Parr & Badger, 276. Images and book clean and bright. A fine copy.

        Mort du Papier

Paris: Pierre Gaudin, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Pierre Gaudin. Woodcut by Pierre Gaudin. Unknown limitation. This slim volume is the text of a speech Delluegue delivered at the July 1966 commencement and prize-giving ceremony at the Lycée Technique et Moderne à Isle–sur-Sougue. In it he continually refers to recently published works of fiction by Eero Tolvanen and René Zuber in which an unstoppable bacterium destroys all paper, including paper currency, causing the collapse of civilization. No doubt, many of these graduates assisted in the rescue of the millions of books and works of art damaged in the catastrophic flood of the Arno in November of the same year. The accompanying woodcut by Pierre Gaudin, printed in flaming red, and the charred aspect of Giard’s binding underscore Delluegue’s point by using vivid imagery of the destruction of paper. Bradel binding. Burned paper, painted and applied over Japanese paper. Titled in pyrography. Clamshell box. Bound by Christine Giard in 2007. 11.7 x 20.3 cm.
