        Haggadah for Passover

1966. First Edition . Signed. (HAGGADAH) SHAHN, Ben. Haggadah for Passover. Paris: Trianon Press, (1966). Large folio (13 by 17 inches), unsewn as issued, original glassine wrappers, original clasped parchment box. $6500.Beautiful large limited folio Passover Haggadah, number 92 of only 228 copies (out of a total edition of 292) on Arches Vergé paper, illustrated by Ben Shahn with 21 color pictorial borders and line drawings and an additional beautiful double-page color lithograph also signed by him.Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn executed many of the illustrations for this Haggadah around 1930, while working on a pictorial representation of the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. Like those for his secular works, Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression, a theme central to the story of Passover. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings, which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum, incorporating them into this extraordinary Haggadah. Shahn's year-long visit to Djerba, off the Tunisian coast, and his masterful calligraphy lend this Haggadah an oriental feel. Text in Hebrew and English. Box with usual light toning. A beautiful signed copy in fine condition.

        11:02 Nagasaki

1966. First Edition . TOMATSU, Shomei. 11:02 Nagasaki. Tokyo: Shashin Dojinsha, 1966. Square octavo, original white paper boards, original cardboard slipcase. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6000.First edition of this important look at Nagasaki, with 119 black-and-white photogravure plates depicting the effect of the atom bomb. This is the first photobook by Tomatsu, a founding member of the avant-garde photographers’ group Vivo and the leading figure in a generation of “angry young men who sought to take photography to the absolute limits” (Parr & Badger I:271). In 1960, the Japan Council Against Atomic and Hydrogen Bombs asked Tomatsu to take photos of Nagasaki and the bomb’s aftereffects. Titled after the time of the bomb’s explosion, this work has had great influence on the development of Japanese photography. The “ultra-fine sensitivity towards the subject and the deep sense of detachment which is to be found in these photographs may, perhaps, be considered as the culmination of modern Japanese photography that had first appeared in the 1930s. In particular, an approach which consisted of transforming everyday subjects into powerful symbolic images was brought to perfection by Tomatsu. His photographs provide a powerful incentive to confront social reality, and his consistent openness towards others, through the medium of photography, means that he exercised a great influence on young photographers” (Frizot, 691). The text by Motoi Tamaki and interviews with survivors is in Japanese. Open Book, 226. Parr & Badger, 276. Images and book clean and bright. A fine copy.

        Mort du Papier

Paris: Pierre Gaudin, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Pierre Gaudin. Woodcut by Pierre Gaudin. Unknown limitation. This slim volume is the text of a speech Delluegue delivered at the July 1966 commencement and prize-giving ceremony at the Lycée Technique et Moderne à Isle–sur-Sougue. In it he continually refers to recently published works of fiction by Eero Tolvanen and René Zuber in which an unstoppable bacterium destroys all paper, including paper currency, causing the collapse of civilization. No doubt, many of these graduates assisted in the rescue of the millions of books and works of art damaged in the catastrophic flood of the Arno in November of the same year. The accompanying woodcut by Pierre Gaudin, printed in flaming red, and the charred aspect of Giard’s binding underscore Delluegue’s point by using vivid imagery of the destruction of paper. Bradel binding. Burned paper, painted and applied over Japanese paper. Titled in pyrography. Clamshell box. Bound by Christine Giard in 2007. 11.7 x 20.3 cm.

      - STCN (6 copies); Walravens 92; cf. Lach & Van Kley III, pp. 1194-1196; Wyatt, "Introduction" in: A new historical relation of the Kingdom of Siam (1966). Second edition, published in the same years as the first, of a comprehensive work on the history of the kingdom of Siam, "Universally regarded as the finest work on seventeenth-century Thailand" (Wyatt). The French diplomat Simon de La Loubère (1642-1729) was appointed as Louis XIV's envoy extraordinary to the court of Siam, and while he stayed in Siam for only three months he diligently and systemically asked questions, "probably stimulated by the Jesuit scientists who accompanied the mission to take more than a passing interest in Siamese cosmology, astronomy, and mathematics" (Lach & Van Kley). Loubère compensated his short stay with a thorough study of earlier writers, referring to twenty-three European authors from Pinto to Gervaise in the first volume and collecting French translations of native works in the second. Besides presenting information on Siam itself, Loubère also incorporates information on India and China and their influence on Siam's past. With the armorial bookplate of Anton Ernst Burckhard van Birckenstein (active 1686-1744) on paste-down. Very good copy.

        Karate Goju-ryu by The Cat

International Karate-Do Goju-kai, Tokyo, 1966. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Poor. 296 pages (complete). A VERY, VERY RARE copy of this autobiography of the great Gogen Yamaguchi, "The Cat". Yamaguchi was a household name for many, many years, in Japan and any place where Karate was practiced. The dustjacket is much worn, torn, scuffed. It is however, intact and concerted. The cover is glorious. It is covered with blue woven cloth, with gilt Japanese script. Other than very light shelving wear to the corners, the covers are very appealing. The front and end papers are of woven paper. These are neat and tidy. The early pages have some storage rubbing, wear and marks. Beyond these the pages are comfortable, clean, clear, benevolent, diligent, personal, very pleasing. A happy copy. fk

New York, [Simon & Schuster,] 1945 [1959, 1966] - Single leaf folded for mailing with the envelope. Octavos. Original cloth, with the dust jackets. Housed in a dark blue quarter morocco solander box by the Chelsea Bindery. Letter very lightly marked, books very good in torn and creased dust jackets. First editions, first printings. The recipient was Bernstein's former teacher at the Curtis Institute where Longy taught ear training. Bernstein studied score reading under her tutelage. The letter was written just 5 days after the opening of his first Broadway musical, On The Town. "Well the show has opened and is a phenomenal hit, in spite of it all. The reviews are fantastic raves, especially the Times and PM, and the Hollywood Reporter which called it the greatest musical ever produced! It's thrilling, and I would be a rich man, except that whatever money I get goes back to Uncle Samovitch for taxes." He concludes that he is "struggling to get back into my beard (long-hair) and study Brahms First for Pittsburgh next week" signing off with "Love and thanks again Lenny Spookietchka". A touching and resonant group and a key association in Bernstein's musical life. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

Vivien Leigh writes about plays and looking for a role in London theatre that would suit her

New York, New York, May 7, 1966. 5.75" x 7.75". "Single page TLS on off-white stationary, 5.75"" x 7.75"". Dated May 7, 1966, and signed by Vivien Leigh as ""Vivien Leigh"". Right and lower edges slightly discolored, else near fine condition.Vivien Leigh writes a letter to her close friend, Joyce Huddart. One can project that she perhaps met Joyce during her period acting in the theaters of London. Joyce was head of wardrobe and also participated as stage crew for the London Tower Theatre, and the two corresponded regularly over a period of many years. Vivien Leigh's ultimate passion was for roles in theater. She was quoted as saying, ""I'm not a film star – I'm an actress. Being a film star – just a film star – is such a false life, lived for fake values and for publicity. Actresses go on for a long time and there are always marvelous parts to play.""This letter to Joyce was written during the run of Ivanov, Vivien's last stage play appearance. The revival of this play would open May 3rd, 1966 at the Shubert Theatre in New York City and run for only 47 performances. However the letter reflects Vivien's love of acting, along with her continued concerns about how she is reviewed by the media. But in addition, the letter also demonstrated both her tenacity to continue to perform, along with her reflection of her wish to return to England with her comments ""We have been having wonderful audiences here in New York, and the reviews, except for the Times, have been very fine indeed, so we are hoping for a good season… I am reading plays and trust that I shall find one that I shall do at home"". However within a year, Leigh's intermittent battle with tuberculous returned and she passed away on July 7, 1967A poignant wonderful signed letter to her personal friend, reflecting her strong constitution and passion for her career."

Original lithograph in colors, one of the 15 proofs printed on Imperial Japan paper and reserved for the artist and his collaborators, one draw with 20 other japan and 250 Arches paper. unsigned Event, as all races in the series except the frontispiece.Superb test of Japan made especially for The Story of Exodus, published in 1966, Chagall painted the 24 lithographs inset printed by Mourlot.Fernand Mourlot, undoubtedly the best artisan lithographer of the twentieth century, was naturally the printer and the friend of the greatest artists of his time. "Picasso, Matisse, Chagall, Miró, Braque, Dubuffet, Léger, Giacometti ... have enriched their own expressions and contemporary art a new area of ??research. With Mourlot, and thanks to him, lithography has acquired both personality and future. " (Pierre Cabanne, in fifty years of lithography).Already printer of the two volumes of the Bible illustrated by Chagall, Mourlot contributed to the formation of the artist in the art of lithography in the 1950s it was at this time that Chagall indeed begins to attend workshop Mourlot to learn the lithographic processes and he became friends with the artisans of printing, including Charles Sorlier. So is this the top of his game as Chagall realizes this Exodus story that coincides with the completion of his immense lithographic and pictorial work on the Bible began in 1930 at the initiative of Ambroise Vollard. This decorative cycle entitled Biblical Message T will also behind the creation of the Marc Chagall Museum, originally the National Museum of Biblical Message Marc - Chagall.Extremely rare first test printed on Japan, the best paper and the best for color prints.         [Moïse sauvé des eaux] Then the daughter of Pharaoh opened the arke, and saw it was a childe (Et la fille du Pharaon ouvrit l'arche et vit que c'était un enfant) - The Story of Exodus

      - AMIEL Léon, Paris, New-York 1966, 36x49.5cm, une feuille. - Litografia originale a colori stampate su carta giapponese imperiale. (Pierre Cabanne, in Cinquante années de lithographie).

General Catalog of Duke Ellington's Recorded Music - Inscribed to Ellington by the Author

Palermo 1966 - Luigi Sanfilippo's catalog of Ellington's works, inscribed by the author to Ellington on the half-title: "Friendly a little gift to the great E. K. Ellington." With Sanfilippo's original business card. Few scholars began to work on Ellington's huge musical and cultural output until after his death, but Sanfilippo had begun the mammoth task of cataloging his recorded music in the 1960's. As he writes in the preface, there was a very positive response to his work: "The surprising success of the 1 edition of this book, and above all, the warm encouragement by collectors troughout [sic] the world, have made me decide, after barely one year, to publish a second edition of my modest work." 112 pp. Burgundy leather, stamped in gold; moire endpapers. Area of scuffing to the back cover; light traces of paper to the front cover; edges slightly rubbed; intact and overall in very good condition. 6.5 x 9.75 inches (16.5 x 25 cm). Provenance: Duke Ellington Estate.
